Based on a survey of prescription drug users (N = 408), this study revealed that: (a) the frequency of consumers' personal experience of prescription medicine adverse reactions negatively related to the extent of their optimistic bias about the chances of such events, (b) consumers' perceived personal control over adverse reactions positively related to optimistic bias, and (c) optimistic bias related more negatively to intentions to seek risk information when consumer skepticism toward direct-to-consumer advertising was high. When skepticism was low to average, optimistic bias did not inhibit such intentions. Implications and recommendations for the practice of direct-to-consumer advertising are provided.

A new reliable computational model to predict the hole mobility of poly-crystalline organic semiconductors in thin films was developed. Site energy differences and transfer integrals in crystalline morphologies of organic molecules were obtained from quantum chemical calculations, in which periodic boundary conditions were efficiently applied to capture the interactions with the surrounding molecules in the crystalline organic layer. Then the parameters were employed in kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations to estimate the carrier mobility. Carrier transport in multiple directions has been considered in the kMC simulation to mimic poly-crystalline characteristics under thin-film conditions. Furthermore, the calculated mobility was corrected using a calibration equation based on microscopy images of the thin films to take the effect of grain boundaries into account. As a result, good agreement was observed between the predicted and measured hole mobility values for 21 molecular species: the coefficient of determination (R(2)) was estimated to be 0.83 and the mean absolute error was 1.32 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). This numerical approach can be applied to any molecules for which crystal structures are available and will provide a rapid and precise way of predicting device performance.

Based on a survey with members of an online consumer panel (N= 699), this study revealed that: (a) a substantial percentage of consumers held misperceptions about the chemical imbalance theory of depression; (b) personal and interpersonal experiences with depression positively related to such misperceptions; (c) overall, exposure to direct-to-consumer (DTC) antidepressant advertising did not significantly relate to misperceptions; and (d) DTC exposure magnified misperceptions when consumers were highly trustful of DTC advertising, whereas exposure diluted misperceptions when consumers were highly skeptical. Theoretical and practical implications of the research are discussed, especially in light of the social responsibility of DTC advertising.

Using Taylor's six-segment message strategy wheel as a theoretical framework, this study examines the communication approach (transmission or ritual) and message strategy (ego, social, sensory, routine, acute need, or ration) of cosmetic surgery websites. A content analysis revealed a fairly even division between transmission and ritual approaches. Ration strategy was the exclusive strategy in the websites adopting a transmission approach. No routine or acute need strategies were observed. Websites incorporating the ritual approach used ego, social, and sensory strategies. Human female models and natural objects were incorporated to deliver emotional persuasion. Implications for cosmetic surgery web marketers are discussed.

A 10 nV/rt Hz noise level 32-channel neural impedance sensing ASIC is presented for the application of local activation imaging in nerve section. It is increasingly known that the monitoring and control of nerve signals can improve physical and mental health. Major nerves, such as the vagus nerve and the sciatic nerve, consist of a bundle of fascicles. Therefore, to accurately control a particular application without any side effects, we need to know exactly which fascicle was activated. The only way to find locally activated fascicle is to use electrical impedance tomography (EIT). The ASIC to be introduced is designed for neural EIT applications. A neural impedance sensing ASIC was implemented using CMOS 180-nm process technology. The integrated input referred noise was calculated to be 0.46 µVrms (noise floor 10.3 nVrms/rt Hz) in the measured noise spectrum. At an input of 80 mV, the squared correlation coefficient for linear regression was 0.99998. The amplification gain uniformity of 32 channels was in the range of + 0.23% and - 0.29%. Using the resistor phantom, the simplest model of nerve, it was verified that a single readout channel could detect a signal-to- noise ratio of 75.6 dB or more. Through the reservoir phantom, real-time EIT images were reconstructed at a rate of 8.3 frames per second. The developed ASIC has been applied to in vivo experiments with rat sciatic nerves, and signal processing is currently underway to obtain activated nerve cross-sectional images. The developed ASIC was also applied to in-vivo experiments with rat sciatic nerves, and signal processing is currently underway to obtain locally activated nerve cross-sectional images.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of shunt malfunction can be challenging since neuroimaging results are not always correlated with clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a simple, minimally invasive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lumbar tapping test that predicts shunt under-drainage in hydrocephalus patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological features of 48 patients who underwent routine CSF lumbar tapping after ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) operation using a programmable shunting device. We compared shunt valve opening pressure and CSF lumbar tapping pressure to check under-drainage. RESULTS: The mean pressure difference between valve opening pressure and CSF lumbar tapping pressure of all patients were 2.21±24.57 mmH2O. The frequency of CSF lumbar tapping was 2.06±1.26 times. Eighty five times lumbar tapping of 41 patients showed that their VPS function was normal which was consistent with clinical improvement and decreased ventricle size on computed tomography scan. The mean pressure difference in these patients was -3.69±19.20 mmH2O. The mean frequency of CSF lumbar tapping was 2.07±1.25 times. Fourteen cases of 10 patients revealed suspected VPS malfunction which were consistent with radiological results and clinical symptoms, defined as changes in ventricle size and no clinical improvement. The mean pressure difference was 38.07±23.58 mmH2O. The mean frequency of CSF lumbar tapping was 1.44±1.01 times. Pressure difference greater than 35 mmH2O was shown in 2.35% of the normal VPS function group (2 of 85) whereas it was shown in 64.29% of the suspected VPS malfunction group (9 of 14). The difference was statistically significant (p=0.000001). Among 10 patients with under-drainage, 5 patients underwent shunt revision. The causes of the shunt malfunction included 3 cases of proximal occlusion and 2 cases of distal obstruction and valve malfunction. CONCLUSION: Under-drainage of CSF should be suspected if CSF lumbar tapping pressure is 35 mmH2O higher than the valve opening pressure and shunt malfunction evaluation or adjustment of the valve opening pressure should be made.

Health communication scholars have a responsibility to be certain that both healthcare practitioners and government agencies accurately communicate health information to the public. In order to carry out this duty, health communication scholars must assess how messages are being received and if they are being received at all by the public. This paper details a two part study which assesses this phenomenon within the context of skin cancer. Study 1 utilized 29 in depth qualitative interviews to identify subcultures among college students whose communication puts them at risk for skin cancer by encouraging poor sun exposure behaviors. The results indicate that farmers, African Americans, and individuals who regularly participate in outdoor athletics are at risk groups. Study 2 reports a content analysis of the known population of skin cancer Public Service Announcements (PSAs) available via the internet in 2013. The aforementioned groups were not present in any of the PSAs. Detailed results and implications are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate demographic and clinical factors affecting the common femoral artery diameter and length, and anatomical relationship between the femoral head and the common femoral artery during angiography. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 109 femoral angiograms. We collected the clinical data of the patients and estimated the common femoral artery diameter and length. We divided the areas in the angiogram from cephalic to caudal direction (zone 0 to 5). The lowest levels of the inferior epigastric artery loop and points of the common femoral artery bifurcation were checked. RESULTS: The luminal diameter of the common femoral artery was 6.19±1.20 mm. Height, weight, body surface area, as well as common femoral artery diameter were significantly greater in men than in women (p<0.005). The length of the common femoral artery was 27.59±8.87 mm. Height, weight and body surface area showed strong positive relationships with common femoral artery diameter. All of the inferior epigastric artery loops were located above the center of the femoral head. The point of common femoral artery bifurcation was above the center of the femoral head in 4.59% of femoral angiograms. CONCLUSIONS: Males and patients with a high body surface area have a larger common femoral artery diameter. The cumulative probability of optimal targeting between the lowest margin of the inferior epigastric artery loop and the common femoral artery bifurcation is the highest in zone 3 puncture.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate how college students deal with conflicting health messages in advertising regarding binge drinking and wine promotion. METHOD: Phenomenological in-depth long interviews were conducted beyond the point of redundancy (N = 16). RESULTS: The results of this study indicated that students' meaning making regarding the conflicting messages relied greatly upon how consistent either message was with their prior beliefs about alcohol. Additionally, not all students perceived the messages to be contradictory; these students saw the messages as being constructed for different purposes and as such incomparable. Overall, students who perceived conflict responded to the topic with apathy fueled by advertising skepticism. CONCLUSION: Employing qualitative methodology to understand how college students respond to conflicting messages will assist health promotion practitioners develop more effective alcohol abuse prevention messages and provide suggestions for researchers for studying this phenomenon from other perspectives in the future. Implications are further discussed within.
