OBJECTIVES: Risk factors for non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOFCs) include genetic profile and environmental exposure to medication and illnesses during pregnancy. We assessed the association between the COVID-19 vaccination and the incidence of NSOFC across five Middle Eastern countries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multi-country, hospital-based, case-control study included infants with NSOFCs whose first 3 intrauterine months coincided with the time when pregnant women were allowed to receive COVID-19 vaccination in the countries participating in the study. Newborns with NSOFCs were examined for cleft type and their parents were interviewed for maternal exposures and COVID-19 vaccination. Controls were newborns matched to cases in gender and setting. RESULTS: The study recruited 977 (348 children with NSOFCs and 629 controls). Maternal use of nicotine (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 2.437; P = 0.044) and family history of NSOFC (AOR: 11.059; P < 0.001) increased significantly the AOR of having a child with NSOFC. On the other hand, COVID-19 vaccine administration to pregnant mothers have significantly decreased the AOR of having a child with NSOFC (AOR: 0.337; P = 0.006). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that COVID-19 vaccination is not related to NSOFC and might protect against having a child affected with such a congenital anomaly. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The finding of this study is important for healthcare providers for considering COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant woman. Clear communication and education about the potential risks and benefits would be crucial for informed decision-making. The study's results would directly impact pregnant individuals, as they would need accurate information to make informed decisions about their health and the health of their infants.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about factors associated with the severity of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) especially during the COVID-19 pandemic with its dramatic changes. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this multi-national study is to measure the association between CL/P severity, COVID-19 infection, and fear of COVID-19 in five Arab countries. METHODS: This cross-sectional study took place in major governmental hospitals in five Arab countries from November 2020 to April 2023. Participants were infants born with CL/P and their mothers who were in their 1st trimester during the COVID-19 pandemic. Clinical examination was carried out, and CL/P cases were grouped according to phenotype: cleft lip and palate (CLP) versus cleft lip (CL), cleft extension (incomplete versus complete), and site (unilateral versus bilateral) to assess severity. Information on maternal COVID-19 infection and fear of COVID-19 were gathered. RESULTS: The study recruited 273 CL/P infants. Maternal COVID-19 infection during one-month pre-gestation and 1st trimester was significantly associated with higher odds of CL/P severity (AOR = 2.707; P = 0.002) than mothers without the COVID-19 infection. Using supplements during pregnancy showed a protective effect (AOR = 0.573; P = 0.065). CONCLUSION: Mothers infected with COVID-19 before and during pregnancy had more than twofold higher odds of having an infant with a more severe CL/P phenotype.

OBJECTIVE: The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic presents an opportunity to study stress's effect on the development of non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs). This study was aimed at assessing maternal stress exposure during the pregestational to first trimester pregnancy periods and the development of NSOFCs during a year of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: Cohort study of infants with NSOFCs and controls matched based on recruitment site and age. SETTING: Government hospitals in Saudi Arabia between November 2020 and November 2021. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Data collection included NSOFC clinical examination and maternal stress exposure assessment using the Modified Life Events Questionnaire, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, and a focus on the lack of pregnancy planning and a threatened miscarriage. RESULTS: Of the 557 infants recruited, 191 had NSOFCs. Logistic regression analysis with adjusted odds ratios (AORs) that removed the effects of confounders showed that any of the seven stressful life events (AOR:3.78, P < .001) and the family histories of relatives with NSOFCs (AOR:9.73, P < .001) increased the AOR for NSOFC development. In contrast, maternal folic acid (AOR:0.56, P.010), threatened miscarriage (AOR:0.17, P = .001), fear of COVID-19 (AOR:0.83, P = .038), and suspected COVID-19 infection (AOR:0.43, P = .008) decreased the AOR for NSOFC development. CONCLUSION: Along with an established risk associated with family history of birth defects, stressful life events may be a risk factor for NSOFC development. Beyond folic acid's known benefit, it may be that higher maternal health concerns contribute to increased protective health behaviors during pregnancy. Ongoing research is needed to specify the maternal risk factors for NSOFC.

BACKGROUND: Various methods can be used for creating zirconia dental restorations, including 3-dimensional (3D) printing and computer-aided design/ computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milling. The fused deposition modeling (FDM) printing method for zirconia presents numerous advantages, albeit research on the mechanical properties of these materials and resultant restorations remains scarce. Such developments are undeniably intriguing and warrant further investigation. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the sintering firing cycle (Conventional vs. Speed sintering) on the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and Vickers Microhardness of milled vs. FDM printed zirconia. METHODS: A total of 60 bars (2 × 5 × 27 mm) were fabricated for flexural strength testing, along with 40 discs (12 × 1.5 mm) for Vickers microhardness testing. Half of the specimens underwent conventional sintering, while the other half underwent a speed sintering cycle. The flexural strength and modulus were determined by a three-point bending test in a universal testing machine. The microhardness of the specimens was evaluated using a Vickers microhardness tester. Statistical analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA test with a post-hoc Tukey test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: CAD/CAM milled zirconia had significantly higher flexural strength and modulus than FDM-printed zirconia. The sintering process did not significantly affect the flexural strength or modulus of milled or FDM-printed zirconia. The milled speed sintering group had significantly higher values in the Vickers microhardness test compared to the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: The mechanical properties of FDM-printed zirconia specimens were not found to be comparable to those of milled zirconia. Speed sintering cycle may produce milled zirconia restorations with similar flexural strength and modulus to conventional sintering, and even higher Vickers Microhardness values.

The etiology of oral diseases in children is complex and multifactorial. The oral health of children can be influenced by various factors, including parental knowledge, attitudes and behaviors, as well as socioeconomic status. The objective of this study was to assess, among mothers of children aged 6-12 years, (1) mothers' knowledge about their children's oral health, (2) mothers' attitude toward their children's oral health, and (3) mothers' dental behavior concerning their oral health and to evaluate their influence on their children's dental caries. This cross-sectional study involved three questionnaires to be filled in by mothers of primary school children in addition to an oral examination of their children to measure decayed, missing, filled teeth for primary (dmft) and permanenet (DMFT) dentitions. The mother-child pairs were recruited through multistage stratified random sampling of primary schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was comprised of four sections: 1-demographic characteristics and socioeconomic status 2-Hiroshima University Dental Behavioral Inventory (mothers' attitudes and behavior pertaining to their oral health) 3-mothers' knowledge regarding the oral health of their children 4-mothers' attitude toward their children oral health. A total of 1496 mother-child pairs completed the study. The mean values of dmft were 4.08 ± 3.47; DMFT was 1.82 ± 2.07; total dmft and DMFT were 5.65 ± 4.05. According to the questionnaire results, mothers in private schools had a more favorable attitude and behavior toward their oral health, as well as a more favorable knowledge and attitude toward their children's oral health. The multiple linear regression model revealed that children's dmft/DMFT scores were significantly related to mother education, mother questionnaire scores, and the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index. Children's oral health is significantly impacted by oral health-related knowledge, attitude and behaviors of their mothers in addition to income status and education level.

OBJECTIVES: This is the first national study to investigate the incidence of non-syndromic oro-facial clefts (NSOFC) and Pierre-Robin-Sequence in Saudi Arabia over the Covid-19 pandemic period. METHODS: All maternity hospitals (30-hospitals) in the major regions and cities of Saudi from November 2020-to-2021 were included in the study. Patients were evaluated for cleft phenotype using the LASHAL-classification system. The incidence of NSOFC in Saudi Arabia was calculated by comparing the number of NSOFCs cases born out of all live births during the study period at the included hospitals. Clinical examination was performed and information was gathered using a validated data collection form. RESULTS: In one year, 140,380 live-infants were born at the selected hospitals. Of these, 177 were diagnosed with NSOFC giving an incidence of 1.26/1,000 live-births in Saudi Arabia and the highest incidence in Medina city (2.46/1000 live-births). The incidence of cleft lip-and-palate (0.67/1000 live-births) was higher than that of cleft-palate (0.37/1000 live-births) and cleft-lip (0.22/1000 live-births). Pierre-Robin Sequence incidence was (0.04/1000 live-births). There were 21(12.1) or 23(13.2%) of NSOFC's mothers exposed or vaccinated with Covid-19, respectively. CONCLUSION: The national incidence of NSOFC in Saudi Arabia was 1.26/1000 live births with variation between phenotypes and regions in the country. In addition, to reporting Covid-19 infection prevalence and vaccine exposure among NSOFC's mothers, this study represents the first of its type to evaluate NSOFC prevalence in Saudi Arabia on a national level.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder linked to several genetic and environmental factors including antenatal stress. Hence, we aimed to examine whether a mother's stress during pregnancy is associated with the severity of autism spectrum disorder in children. The study was conducted with 459 mothers of children with autism (aged 2-14 years) who were attending rehabilitation and educational centers in the two major cities of Makkah and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Environmental factors, consanguinity, and ASD family history were assessed using a validated questionnaire. The Prenatal Life Events Scale questionnaire was used to assess whether the mothers were exposed to stress during pregnancy. Two models of ordinal regression analysis were conducted including gender, child age maternal age, parental age, maternal education, parental education, income nicotine exposure, mother taking medication during pregnancy, family history of ASD, gestation, consanguinity, exposure of prenatal life events (in model 1), and severity of prenatal life events (in model 2). Family history of ASD showed a statistically significant association with the severity of ASD in both regression models (p = .015, odds ratio [OR]: 4.261 in Model 1, and p = .014, OR: 4.901 in model 2). In model 2, the moderate severity prenatal life events showed higher statistically significant adjusted odds ratio for ASD severity compared to no stress (p = .031; OR: 3.82). Within the limitations of this study, prenatal stressors showed some potential contribution to ASD severity. Family history of ASD was the only factor that showed a persistent association with ASD severity. A study that assesses the effect of COVID-19 stress on ASD prevalence and severity is recommended.

BACKGROUND: The environmental etiology of non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFCs) is still under research. The aim of this case-control study is to assess COVID-19 associated factors that may be related to the risk of NSOFC in five Arab countries. These factors include COVID-19 infection, COVID-19 symptoms, family member or friends infected with COVID-19, stress, smoking, socioeconomic status and fear of COVID-19. METHODS: The study took place in governmental hospitals in five Arab countries from November 2020 to November 2021. Controls are matched in the month of delivery and site of recruitment. A clinical examination was carried out using LASHAL classification. Maternal exposure to medication, illnesses, supplementation, COVID-19 infection during their pregestation and 1st trimester periods were evaluated using a validated questionnaire. Maternal exposure to stress was assessed using the Life Events scale, fear of covid-19 scale, family member or friend affected with covid-19 infection, pregnancy planning and threatened abortion. RESULTS: The study recruited 1135 infants (386 NSOFC and 749 controls). Living in urban areas, maternal exposure to medications 3-months pregestation, maternal exposure to any of the prenatal life events and maternal fear of COVID-19 significantly increased the risk of having a child with NSOFC. On the other hand, mothers exposed to supplementation 3-months pregestation, mothers suspected of having COVID-19 infection, family members or friends testing positive with COVID-19 significantly decreased the risk of having a child with NSOFC. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that NSOFC may be associated with maternal exposure to lifetime stress and COVID-19 fear in particular, with no direct effect of the COVID-19 infection itself. This highlights the importance of providing psychological support for expecting mothers during stressful events that affect populations such as the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the usual antenatal care.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are features of COVID-19 infection. There is, however, little known about oral diseases associated with COVID-19 in adolescents and young adults (AYA). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess oral lesions' association with COVID-19 infection in AYA; and to identify if sex and age will modify these associations. METHODOLOGY: Data was collected for this cross-sectional study between August 2020 and January 2021 from 11-to-23 years old participants in 43-countries using an electronic validated questionnaire developed in five languages. Data collected included information on the dependent variables (the presence of oral conditions- gingival inflammation, dry mouth, change in taste and oral ulcers), independent variable (COVID-19 infection) and confounders (age, sex, history of medical problems and parents' educational level). Multilevel binary logistic regression was used for analysis. RESULTS: Complete data were available for 7164 AYA, with 7.5% reporting a history of COVID-19 infection. A significantly higher percentage of participants with a history of COVID-19 infection than those without COVID-19 infection reported having dry mouth (10.6% vs 7.3%, AOR = 1.31) and taste changes (11.1% vs 2.7%, AOR = 4.11). There was a significant effect modification in the association between COVID-19 infection and the presence of dry mouth and change in taste by age and sex (P = 0.02 and < 0.001). CONCLUSION: COVID-19 infection was associated with dry mouth and change in taste among AYA and the strength of this association differed by age and sex. These oral conditions may help serve as an index for suspicion of COVID-19 infection in AYA.

BACKGROUND: Pubic hair grooming, including the complete removal of pubic hair, has become an increasingly common practice, particularly among young women. Although widespread, there is limited data regarding the methods, products, reasons, and complications of pubic hair removal, particularly among Saudi women. The objective was to examine pubic hair removal practices and the prevalence of its complications among Saudi women living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study conducted at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Saudi women between 16 and 60 years of age who had the ability to read and speak Arabic, were eligible to complete an anonymous and self-administered survey on pubic hair removal practices and its complications. RESULTS: Between December 2015 and September 2016, 400 Saudi women completed the survey. The age was 26.3 ± 6.9, 16-58 (mean ± SD, range) years. About three quarters (77.0%) self-removed their pubic hair, while the remainder made use of professional personnel in medical clinics (15.5%), beauty salons (5.3%), and professional services at home (2.2%). Many women (41.8%) used a combination of hair removal methods, with non-electric razor as the most common single method used (33.5%), followed by laser (8.7%), sugaring (6.0%), waxing (4.5%), trimming (2.0%), electric razor (2.0%), and cream (1.5%). Three-quarters of women (75.5%) reported complications, and although they were mostly minor injuries, treatment had to be sought for 17.9% of complications. Multivariable analyses showed that no variables remained correlated with the occurrence of complications (age of starting hair removal, income, BMI, level of education, mode of removal, advice on removal). CONCLUSIONS: Saudi women initiate pubic hair removal in early adolescence. While most complications are minor, close to one in five women experience complications.

BACKGROUND: Misoprostol is an effective agent for the induction of labor. Existing guidelines recommend oral misoprostol solution 25 µg every 2 hours. However, more research is required to optimize the use of oral misoprostol solution for the induction of labor. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare efficacy and safety of hourly titrated-dose oral misoprostol solution with static-dose oral misoprostol solution every 2 hours for labor induction. STUDY DESIGN: In this randomized controlled study, oral misoprostol solution was administered as (1) 20 µg hourly (≤4 doses) that was increased in the absence of regular uterine contractions to 40 µg hourly (≤4 doses) and then to 60 µg hourly (≤16 doses) or (2) 25 µg every 2 hours until active labor began (≤12 doses). A sample size of 146 women was planned with the use of a projected 95% rate for the primary endpoint (vaginal delivery within 24 hours) for hourly titrated-dose misoprostol and 80% rate for static-dose misoprostol every 2 hours. Safety outcomes included maternal morbidity and adverse neonatal outcomes. RESULTS: From December 2013 to July 2015, 146 women were assigned randomly to treatment. Demographic and clinical factors were similar between groups, except for age. Vaginal delivery was achieved within 24 hours in 47 women (64.4%) who received hourly titrated-doses of misoprostol solution and 48 women (65.8%) who received 2-hourly static-dose misoprostol solution (P=1.00). Rates of vaginal delivery within 24 hours did not differ significantly between treatment groups for women who were nulliparous (P=1.00) or who had postterm pregnancies (P=.66), a Bishop score of ≤3 (P=.84), or oxytocin augmentation (P=.83). Cesarean deliveries were performed within 24 hours in 9 women who received hourly titrated-dose misoprostol solution and 2 women who received 2-hourly static-dose misoprostol solution (P=.056). Pyrexia and meconium-stained liquor occurred more frequently with the hourly titrated-dose regimen. CONCLUSION: The static-dose oral misoprostol solution every 2 hours has similar efficacy as hourly titrated-dose misoprostol solution but with fewer side-effects and lower complication rates.

One of the most crucial tasks of pediatric dentists is to control children's negative behaviors. This study aimed to assess dental behavior and the associated risk factors among children aged 4-12. This cross-sectional study recruited healthy, unaffected children aged 4 to 12 years. Parents were interviewed regarding the sociodemographic details and characteristics of their children's dental visits. Two collaborative dentists examined the children for dental caries (DMFT/DMFT) and behavioral status (Frankl's behavior rating scale). This study included 439 children: 27.3% exhibited uncooperative behavior, and the mean DMFT/dmft was 8.46 ± 3.530. Uncooperative behavior significantly increased when the dental visit was scheduled as an emergency treatment (p = 0.134; Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR): 1.530) and when there was an elevated DMFT/DMFT ratio (p < 0.001; AOR: 1.308). This study revealed a significant association between children's uncooperative behavior and their first dental visit, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to address behavioral challenges when scheduling pediatric dental care. The proactive measures included controlling caries and avoiding emergencies.

Objective: To evaluate the relationship between different environmental risk factors and the severity of cleft lip with/without palate (CL ± P) and cleft palate (CP) in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This was a cross-sectional national study, of government hospitals in 10 cities distributed across major regions of Saudi Arabia, from June 2020 to June 2021. All newborns with CL ± P or CP were clinically examined and evaluated for cleft phenotype severity using the LAHSHAL classification system. Various environmental factors were evaluated by interviewing parents using a validated questionnaire. The severity of CL ± P and CP was evaluated in relation to environmental factors. Results: We recruited 174 patients with non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOFC); 122 (70.1 %) had CL ± P and 52 (29.9 %) had CP. After adjusting the odds ratios by ordinal regression for CL ± P and logistic regression analysis for CP, environmental factors that significantly increased the severity of CL ± P were family history of NSOFC, maternal illnesses, and maternal medication use (P = 0.02, adjusted odds ratio [AOR]:2.70; P = 0.002, AOR:3.70; and P = 0.03, AOR:2.14, respectively). Folic acid supplementation in the first trimester significantly reduced the severity of CL ± P and CP (P = 0.001, AOR:0.18 and P = 0.001, AOR:0.012, respectively). Conclusion: The severity of CL ± P was affected by some maternal exposures during the 3-month pre-gestation period. Therefore, our results suggest the possibility of controlling the severity of NSOFC.

OBJECTIVES: There is a lack of information regarding the longevity of prefabricated crowns on primary teeth. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the clinical success rate of NuSmile pediatric Zirconia crowns in both primary anterior and posterior teeth up to 2 years in terms of gingival health, levels of plaque, restoration failure, and marginal integrity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This interventional study evaluated the clinical performance of NuSmile primary Zirconia crowns on 232 (172 primary incisors and 60 primary molars) pulp-treated primary teeth. Statistical analysis included independent t-test and Kaplan-Meier survival method for which the level of significance was set up at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Gingival and plaque index of the teeth restored with NuSmile Zirconia crowns (test tooth) compared with adjacent and antagonist teeth (control tooth) showed no statistically significant difference at all time intervals (p > 0.05). The Kaplan-Meier survival graph indicated that only 34% of NuSmile Zirconia incisor crowns and 86% of NuSmile Zirconia molar crowns have survived at the end of 24 months. Of the 172 NuSmile Zirconia incisor crowns placed, only 82 teeth survived at the end of 2 years and the majority of the crowns completely lost the Zirconia crown. The Kaplan-Meier graph also indicated that more than two-thirds of crowns, i.e., 90% incisor crowns and 76% of molar crowns, had good marginal integrity at the end of 24 months. CONCLUSIONS: Zirconia pediatric crowns preserve and maintain gingival health and have long-term survival rates with good retention and marginal integrity, indirectly preventing secondary caries. Hence, Zirconia pediatric crowns are a well-suited restoration of choice for primary teeth rehabilitation.

Background: Non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOFC) are among the most common congenital malformations. Several studies have investigated the association between stress and NSOFC; however, they have reported different and heterogeneous results. Therefore, this systematic review was conducted to investigate the association between maternal periconceptional stress and non-syndromic orofacial clefts in infants.The research question was "Is maternal periconceptional stress an etiological factor for non-syndromic orofacial clefts in infants"? Methods: Search strategy, inclusion/exclusion criteria, and data extraction from studies reporting periconceptional maternal exposure to stress and NSOFC were implemented without language restrictions. The risks of bias in the identified studies was assessed, and this information was used in the sensitivity analyses to explain heterogeneity. A meta-analysis of the extracted data was performed. Results: Twelve eligible studies were included. Forest plot for meta-analysis of the association between maternal periconceptional exposure to stress and NSOFC among studies with adjustment for potential confounders showed a statistically significant association with an increased risk of NSOFC (odds ratio [OR]:1.17; P = 0.03), which was apparent for both cleft lip with and without palate (OR:2.07; P = 0.007) and cleft palate (OR:1.72; P = 0.003). There was a substantial heterogeneity between studies, which improved when analyzing only studies that were adjusted for potential confounders. Conclusion: Based on the currently available evidence, maternal exposure to periconceptional stress could be considered a risk factor for NSOFCs. Therefore, we strongly recommend research investigating the effect of stress caused by the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic on the incidence of clefts.

Cross-sectional studies assess a population's health state and the prevalence of diseases or treatments. Few systematic reviews regarding the prevalence of periapical radiolucency (PARL) and nonsurgical root canal treatment (NSRCT) were conducted in the last decade. The goal of this study was to collect and review all updated and available cross-sectional studies that focus on the prevalence of both PARL and NSRCT in adult populations. It involves a systematic literature review of cross-sectional studies on the prevalence of PARL and NSRCT published from 1987 to 2022 in PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus with specific keywords used in the search process. A total of 52 articles were included in this systematic review. The majority of the included articles were from different populations. The overall prevalence of teeth with PARL was 43,522 (6.40%), while the prevalence of NSRCT teeth was 52,149 (7.67%). On the other hand, the overall prevalence of PARL in teeth that have received endodontic treatment and teeth that have not received endodontic treatment were 22,110 (3.25%) and 21,412 (3.15%), respectively. A meta-analysis was not performed due to underreporting of publication bias and the high degree of heterogeneity between studies. The overall risk of bias assessment revealed a low risk of bias in 25 (48%) of the included studies. The prevalence of NSRCT was higher at 7.67%, followed by PARL at approximately 6.40%. However, future studies are recommended to investigate the prevalence of both PARL and NSRCT in different patient populations.

Aim This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of developmental disturbances in permanent second premolars in which their tooth buds were exposed to mandibular intraligamental anesthesia (ILA) using a computer-controlled local anesthetic delivery system (CCLAD). Materials and methods This was a longitudinal follow-up study conducted in a previous randomized clinical trial (RCT). In the previous RCT, a total of 91 children were included (61 control and 30 cases). A structured form was created that contained details about the date of birth, age, and sex at which the participants received local anesthesia and the type of local anesthesia administered (ILA using CCLADS, traditional inferior alveolar nerve block [IANB], and IANB using CCLADS). A history of post-treatment abscess, retreatment, and post-treatment extraction was documented in both groups. Descriptive statistics, including frequency and percentage, and additionally, the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used to compare ILA and IANB. Results Forty of the 91 children attended follow-up visits. Only two children had developmental defects: one child who received traditional IANB had a demarcated white opacity (this patient had a history of dental abscess), and another who received ILA using CCLADS showed hypoplasia on his permanent premolar. No significant association was found between the type of anesthesia and the presence of developmental defects. Conclusion The slow administration of ILA delivered by CCLADS in the primary teeth does not increase the chances of developmental disturbances or damage to the corresponding permanent tooth bud.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal fetal mortality and maternal mortality remains relatively high in Saudi Arabia. Antenatal care aims to improve outcomes; however, evidence to demonstrate its impact on outcomes in Saudi Arabia is lacking. OBJECTIVES: Investigate whether booking status for antenatal care impacted outcomes for pregnant women and identify outcomes that predicted booking status. DESIGN: Retrospective observational cohort study. SETTINGS: Tertiary care center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All Saudi women admitted to the labor or delivery units between January 2011 and December 2019 were included. Outcomes were compared between booked and unbooked women, and logistic regression was used to identify outcomes that predicted booking status, adjusted for age. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Booked/unbooked status and perinatal mortality of Saudi women. SAMPLE SIZE: 10 781 women; 9546 (88.5%) booked, (11.1%) 1192 unbooked. RESULTS: Unbooked mothers had higher incidences of meconium-stained liquor (P=.040), ruptured uterus (P=.017), and blood loss >1000 mL during cesarean deliveries (P=.003), but a lower episiotomy rate (P<.001). Perinatal fetal mortality and maternal mortality were equivalent between the two groups. Episiotomy, higher birth weight, higher mother age, perinatal death, delivery mode, onset of labor, and use of analgesics were all independent predictors of the mother being booked when adjusted for all outcomes and age. CONCLUSIONS: The rate of perinatal and maternal mortality in this cohort was relatively low and equivalent between booked and un-booked mothers, contrary to our expectations. More analysis of the socioeconomic data may explain this striking result. LIMITATIONS: Retrospective chart-review with incomplete data retrieval that affected the completeness of data retrieved. The results of the multivariate analysis cannot be used to infer causality because the study is observational.

This work is designed to assess the antimicrobial efficacy, chelating efficacy, and dissolving capability of the bioactive agent of the Nigella sativa plant (thymoquinone). Four freeze-dried microorganisms were studied. Each species was treated with either 6% sodium Hypochlorite, thymoquinone, or sterile water. The zone of inhibition was measured. Thirty extracted human premolar teeth were utilized to evaluate the smear layer removal. Root canals were mechanically instrumented and then irrigated with either 6% sodium Hypochlorite, 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, or thymoquinone for 1 min and scanned under the scanning electron microscopic to evaluate the cleanliness of the root canal and the remainder of the smear layer. To evaluate the tissue dissolving effect, Bovine Pulp Tissue was utilized. Randomly treated samples included: 6% sodium Hypochlorite, thymoquinone, or isotonic saline for 30 min. The remaining pulp tissue was weighed. Thymoquinone reported the highest inhibition of microbial multiplication compared to other irrigants (p < 0.001). Thymoquinone solution had an excellent antibacterial effect on endodontic pathogen and did not affect the inorganic and organic tissue inside the root canal. Meanwhile, it reported weak chelating and dissolving effects. Tissue dissolution was statistically significant with sodium Hypochlorite solution compared to other groups (p < 0.001).

Background/Purpose: The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has affected individuals worldwide. Considering the nature of dental treatments and direct exposure to saliva, blood, aerosols, or droplets from infected individuals, dentists are at significant risk of COVID-19 infection. Therefore, to decrease aerosol-generating procedures, minimally invasive dentistry (MID) is recommended during this pandemic. The goal of this research was to compare the flow of patients during a pandemic at a single university hospital in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia, and to retrospectively assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric dental treatments including MID. Materials and Methods: This study was a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of pediatric patient records, dental procedures performed, and minimally invasive techniques using the database of the King Abdul-Aziz University Dental Hospital (R4) system during the period of COVID 19 pandemic compared to the same period in the previous year. Results: During the COVID-19 pandemic, pediatric dental patient flow included only 699 patients compared to 1151 patients during the same period in the previous year. The most common pediatric dental procedures performed during the pandemic period were simple restorative treatments, including fissure sealants, followed by dental extractions, and fluoride varnish applications. During the pandemic period, more minimally invasive treatments were performed, including the Hall technique, silver diamine fluoride, resin infiltration, and atraumatic restorative techniques. Conclusion: Based on this data, the COVID-19 pandemic had an impact on dental patient flow and the type of dental procedures performed on children. Minimally invasive treatments that minimize air generation are recommended; however, to establish the long-term effectiveness of minimally invasive treatments in pediatric dentistry, more follow-up studies with bigger sample sizes are required. More recommendations regarding conservative pediatric dental management after the COVID-19 era are suggested.
