Changes in rainfall patterns are important environmental factors affecting plant growth, especially when larger precipitation events and prolonged drought periods occur in subtropical regions. There are many studies on how drought reduces plant biomass through drought-sensitive functional traits, but how excess water affects plant growth and ecophysiology is still poorly understood. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted on Schima superba (Theaceae), a dominant tree species in subtropical forests and commonly used in forestry, in a closed chamber under control (25% soil water content (SWC) as in local forests), drought stress (D, 15% SWC) and moisture stress (W, 35% SWC). Plant growth and ecophysiological traits related to morphology, leaf gas exchange, water potential and structural traits were measured. Compared to control, S. suberba under dry conditions significantly decreased its aboveground biomass, photosynthetic rate (A), leaf water potential and nitrogen use efficiency, but increased intrinsic water use efficiency, root to shoot ratio and specific root length. S. superba under wet conditions also significantly decreased its total biomass, aboveground biomass and specific root length, while W had no effect on A and leaf water potential. Our results indicate that S. superba shows a decrease in carbon gain under drought stress, but less response under wet conditions. This emphasizes the need to consider the strength and frequency of rainfall pattern changes in future studies because rainfall may either alleviate or intensify the effects of drought stress depending on the moisture level, thus suitable water conditions is important for better management of this tree species in subtropical China.

Low temperature combined with low light (LL) affects crop production, especially the yield and quality of peppers, in northwest China during the winter and spring seasons. Zeaxanthin (Z) is a known lipid protectant and active oxygen scavenger. However, whether exogenous Z can mitigate LL-induced inhibition of photosynthesis and oxidative stress in peppers remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of exogenous Z on photosynthesis and the antioxidant machinery of pepper seedlings subject to LL stress. The results showed that the growth and photosynthesis of pepper seedlings were significantly inhibited by LL stress. In addition, the antioxidant machinery was disturbed by the uneven production and elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which resulted in damage to the pepper. For example, membrane lipid peroxidation increased ROS content, and so on. However, exogenous application of Z before LL stress significantly increased the plant height, stem diameter, net photosynthetic rate (Pn), and stomata, which were obviously closed at LL. The activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), mono de-hydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR), de-hydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and ascorbate oxidase (AAO) improved significantly due to the increased expression of CaSOD, CaCAT, CaAPX, CaMDHAR, and CaDHAR. The ascorbic (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) contents and ascorbic/dehydroascorbate (AsA/DHA) and glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratios also increased significantly, resulting in the effective removal of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anions (O2•-) caused by LL stress. Thus, pre-treatment with Z significantly reduced ROS accumulation in pepper seedlings under LL stress by enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and accumulation of components of the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle and upregulated key genes in the AsA-GSH cycle.

The frequency and intensity of heatwaves are increasing around the world, causing severe damages to plants, but whether leaf thermal metrics is in line with leaf economic spectrum is still controversial. Here, we measured leaf damage ratio, leaf thermal metrics (tolerance and sensitivity) and economic traits of 131 woody species across five cities along the Yangtze River after a two-month natural extreme temperature event. We found that leaf thermal sensitivity but not thermal tolerance was correlated with leaf damage ratio, and the relationships between leaf thermal metrics and economic traits were weak, indicating that leaf thermal adaptation may be independent from leaf carbon construction. This study suggests a potential indicator for predicting plant survival under heatwaves, urging future research to explore more physiological traits to comprehensively understand plant heat responses and adaptations.

This study aimed to determine the effects of different concentrations of 1-methyl cyclopropene (1-MCP) on the nutritional quality, antioxidant enzyme activities, and volatile compounds of "Hangjiao No.2" chili pepper during 12 days of storage at ambient temperature. The chili fruit were randomly selected and divided into four groups corresponding to the four treatments, thus, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 µl L-1 1-MCP and a control. The analysis of the nutritional value, enzyme activities, and volatile compounds were determined at 3 days interval. The results showed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was lower in the fruit treated with 1-MCP compared to the control. The treatment with 1.5 µl L-1 and the control showed the lowest superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity compared to the other treatments. Peroxidase (POD) and Catalase (CAT) were highest in the fruit treated with 0.5 µl L-1 compared to the control and treatment with 1.0 µl L-1. The 1.5 µl L-1 treatment delayed the decline in vitamin C and protein content compared to the control. Nitrate levels increased 1.34-fold at 0.5 µl L-1 and 2.01-fold in the control. Chlorophyll content degradation was delayed at 1.0 µl L-1 compared to the control. A total of 88 volatile compounds, including terpenes, aldehydes, alkanes, esters, alcohols, acids, phenolic derivatives, ketones, and other aromatic compounds, were detected in "Hangjiao No.2" pepper during the 12-day storage period and treatment concentrations. The production of volatile terpenes was higher in the control than in the 1-MCP treatments, while the 0.5 µl L-1 1-MCP treatment generally suppressed the production of volatile compounds during storage. Overall, the production of volatile compounds after treatment was higher in the "Hangjiao No.2" chili fruit treated with 1.0 µl L-1 1-MCP than in the other treatments throughout the storage period. The results indicate that 1-MCP treatment was more effective in maintaining fruit quality, enhancing the activities of SOD, POD, and CAT, retarding the accumulation of MDA and restoring volatile aromas, with 1.0 µl L-1 having the best preservative effect on "Hangjiao No.2" chili fruit during storage, which could be useful for future marketing and processing.

The ZIP protein (ZRT, the IRT-like protein) is an important metal transporter that transports Zn, Fe, and other divalent metal ions in plants. In this study, we identified 20 ZIP genes in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). We used bioinformatics methods and renamed them according to their E value in hmmsearch. We also analyzed their gene structure, chromosomal location, constructed a phylogenetic tree, conserved motifs, performed synonymous analysis and responses to abiotic stresses. The results show that these LsZIP genes have 3-11 exons and were distributed unequally on 8 of the 9 chromosomes in lettuce. Based on phylogenetic analyses, the LsZIP gene family can be divided into three subfamilies, and the LsZIP genes within the same subfamily shared similar gene structure. The LsZIP genes contain 12 Motifs, of which Motif1 to Motif8 are widely distributed in group Ⅰ. Furthermore, the LsZIP gene contains numerous hormones and anti-stress response elements. Real-time quantitative PCR demonstrated that most LsZIP genes is up-regulated under the elemental stress in this experiment, indicating that they are positively regulated. But different elemental stressors can induce the expression of LsZIP gene to varying degrees. The LsZIP genes also change in response to different elemental stresses. The present study serves as a basic foundation for future functional studies on the lettuce ZIP family.

The wrinkled pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is a type of chili pepper domesticated in northwestern China, with a characteristic flavor. Fifteen wrinkled and four smooth-skinned pepper varieties were evaluated for morphology, texture, color, nutrients, capsaicinoids, and volatile compounds at the mature fruit stage. The sensory evaluation showed wrinkled pepper was superior to smooth pepper in texture, and it has a highly significant correlation (p < 0.01) with cuticle thickness, maximum penetrating force, lignin content, and moisture content. Citric acid was the major organic acid in peppers, accounting for 39.10-63.55% of the total organic acids, followed by quininic acid. The average oxalic acid content of smooth peppers was 26.19% higher than that of wrinkled peppers. The pungency of wrinkled pepper fruits ranged from 1748.9 to 25529.4 SHU, which can be considered slightly to very spicy, while the four smooth varieties ranged between 866.63 and 8533.70 SHU, at slightly to moderately spicy. A total of 199 volatile compounds were detected in the 19 pepper varieties. The average volatile content of wrinkled pepper was 39.79% higher than that of smooth pepper. Twenty-nine volatile compounds, including 14 aldehydes, four alcohols, three esters, three ketones, two furans, one pyrazine, one acid, and one phenol, contributed to the fragrance of peppers and could be regarded as aroma-active compounds, with 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine being the major contributor among the 19 pepper varieties. Wrinkled pepper can be confidently distinguished from smooth pepper and is of superior quality. The current findings outlined the major texture-related characteristics of pepper as well as the main aroma-active compounds, providing valuable information for pepper quality breeding and consumer guidelines.

Trehalose plays a critical role in plant response to salinity but the involved regulatory mechanisms remain obscure. Here, this study explored the mechanism of exogenous trehalose-induced salt tolerance in tomato plants by the hydroponic test method. Our results indicated that 10 mM trehalose displayed remarkable plant biomass by improving growth physiology, which were supported by the results of chlorophyll fluorescence and rapid light-response curve. In the salinity environment, trehalose + NaCl treatment could greatly inhibit the decrease of malondialdehyde level, and it increases the contents of other osmotic substances, carbohydrates, K+, and K+/Na+ ratio. Meanwhile, trehalose still had similar effects after recovery from salt stress. Furthermore, trehalose pretreatment promoted trehalose metabolism; significantly increased the enzymatic activity of the trehalose metabolic pathway, including trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS), trehalose-6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP), and trehalase (TRE); and upregulated the expression of SlTPS1, SlTPS5, SlTPS7, SlTPPJ, SlTPPH, and SlTRE under saline conditions. However, the transcriptional levels of SlTPS1, SlTPS5, and SlTPS7 genes and the activity of TPS enzyme were reversed after recovery. In addition, we found that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anion (O2 -) were accumulated in tomato leaves because of salt stress, but these parameters were all recovered by foliar-applied trehalose, and its visualization degree was correspondingly reduced. Antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, POD, and CAT) and related gene expression (SlCu/Zn-SOD, SlFe-SOD, SlMn-SOD, SlPOD, and SlCAT) in salt-stressed tomato leaves were also elevated by trehalose to counteract salt stress. Collectively, exogenous trehalose appeared to be the effective treatment in counteracting the negative effects of salt stress.

Trehalose (Tre), which was an osmoprotective or stabilizing molecule, played a protective role against different abiotic stresses in plants and showed remarkable perspectives in salt stress. In this study, the potential role of Tre in improving the resistance to salt stress in tomato plants was investigated. Tomato plants (Micro Tom) were treated with Hoagland nutrient solution (CK), 10 mM Tre (T), 150 mM sodium chloride (NaCl, S), and 10 mM Tre+150 mM NaCl (S+T) for 5 days. Our results showed that foliar application of Tre alleviated the inhibition of tomato plant growth under salt stress. In addition, salt stress decreased the values of net photosynthetic rate (Pn, 85.99%), stomata conductance (gs, 57.3%), and transpiration rate (Tr, 47.97%), but increased that of intercellular carbon dioxide concentration (Ci, 26.25%). However, exogenous application of Tre significantly increased photosynthetic efficiency, increased the activity of Calvin cycle enzymes [ribulose diphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolase (FBA), fructose-1, 6-bisphosphatase (FBPase), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), and transketolase (TK)], up-regulated the expression of genes encoding enzymes, induced stomatal opening, and alleviated salt-induced damage to the chloroplast membrane and structure. In the saline environment, photosynthetic electron transport was restricted, resulting the J-I-P phase to decrease. At the same time, the absorption, capture, and transport energies per excited cross-section and per active reaction center decreased, and the dissipation energy increased. Conversely, Tre reversed these values and enhanced the photosystem response to salt stress by protecting the photosynthetic electron transport system. In addition, foliage application with Tre significantly increased the potassium to sodium transport selectivity ratio (S K-Na ) by 16.08%, and increased the levels of other ions to varying degrees. Principal component analysis (PCA) analysis showed that exogenous Tre could change the distribution of elements in different organs and affect the expressions of SlSOS1, SlNHX, SlHKT1.1, SlVHA, and SlHA-A at the transcriptional level under salt stress, thereby maintaining ion homeostasis. This study demonstrated that Tre was involved in the process of mitigating salt stress toxicity in tomato plants and provided specific insights into the effectiveness of Tre in mediating salt tolerance.

Melatonin (MT) is an important biologically active hormone that plays a vital role in plant growth and development. In particular, it has been investigated for its roles in abiotic stress management. In this study, pepper seedlings were subjected to low-temperature combined with low-light stress (LL) (15/5°C, 100 µmol m-2s-1) prior to a foliar spray of 200mM MT for 168h to investigate the protective role of MT in pepper seedlings. Our results demonstrated that LL stress negatively affected root growth, and accelerated the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including H2O2 and O 2 - , changed the osmolytes contents, and antioxidative system. However, these were reversed by exogenous MT application. MT effectively promoted the root growth as indicated by significant increase in root length, surface area, root volume, tips, forks, and crossings. In addition, MT reduced the burst of ROS and MDA contents induced by LL, enhanced the activities of SOD, CAT, POD, APX, DHAR, and MDHAR resulted by upregulated expressions of CaSOD, CaPOD, CaCAT, CaAPX, CaDHAR, and CaMDHAR, and elevated the contents of AsA and GSH, declined DHA and GSSH contents, which prevented membrane lipid peroxidation and protected plants from oxidative damages under LL stress. Furthermore, seedlings treated with MT released high contents of soluble sugar and soluble protein in leave, which might enhance LL tolerance by maintaining substance biosynthesis and maintaining cellular homeostasis resulted by high levels of osmolytes and carbohydrate in the cytosol. Our current findings confirmed the mitigating potential of MT application for LL stress by promoting pepper root growth, improving antioxidative defense system, ascorbate-glutathione cycle, and osmotic adjustment.

Amino acids are well known as natural stimulators of plant growth and are widely used to promote crop yield and quality. Several studies have been conducted to investigate the effects of amino acid (s) as a foliar spray on a variety of plant species. However, the effects of soil amendment of different concentrations of amino acid water-soluble fertilizer on the physiological characteristics, yield, and quality of pepper remain unclear. Following this, three experimental sets of amino acid water-soluble fertilizer in the ratio 1.8: 2.7: 3.6 kg including control (CK) were conducted in Lintao county, Gansu province. The treatments were applied through furrow method at 6 weeks after planting. The results showed that physiological characteristics of the pepper plants, such as chlorophyll a (1.35 mg g-1), and b (0.67 mg g-1), total chlorophyll (2.02 mg g-1), carotenoid (0.63 mg g-1), ETR (26.25 µmol m-2s-1), Fv/Fm (0.75), Qp (0.92) contents of the leaves were increased by the 1.8 kg treatment while NPQ (71.37%) and root activity (2185.52 µg g-1 h-1) were improved by the 3.6 kg treatment compared to the control. Fertilization with 2.7 kg of amino acid water-soluble fertilizer also had a significant influence on fruit length (25.50 cm), and yield of pepper (37.92 t ha-1) while fruit diameter (24.51 mm), firmness (5.30 kg cm-2), fresh (48.10 g) and dry (4.71 g) weights were higher in the 1.8 kg treatment compared to the control. The lowest rate of fertilizer (1.8 kg) applied again resulted in a significant increase in soluble protein (79.79%), capsaicin (5.80 mg g-1), dihydrocapsaicin (1.08 mg g-1), vitamin C (72.33%) and the essential and non-essential amino acid contents of the pepper which ranged from (235.15 to 11.16 µg g-1) and (1,605.10 to 16.63 µg g-1) respectively, while soluble sugar (9.02%) was enhanced by 3.6 kg treatment compared to the control. The findings suggest that soil amendment with low concentration of amino acid water-soluble fertilizer (1.8 kg) could be successfully used to improve the physiological characteristics and fruit quality of peppers in vegetable production.
