BACKGROUND: Although extended endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) constitutes an alternative approach in patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP), the surgical techniques proposed so far do not allow for an optimal control of the disease. This study introduces bilateral mucoplasty as a complementary technique to extended ESS such as reboot surgery, analyzing its benefits in healing and quality of life (QoL). METHODS: Patients diagnosed with severe Type-2 CRSwNP were selected for a prospective cohort study in two surgery groups: reboot surgery plus bilateral mucoplasty versus reboot surgery only. In the first group, an autologous endonasal mucosal graft from the nostril floor was placed bilaterally onto the ethmoidal roof. Endoscopic, radiological and QoL outcomes were compared before and one year after surgery between the two groups using Modified Lund Kennedy (LKM), Meltzer and Lund Mackay (LM) scores, and the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22). RESULTS: 64 patients with homogeneous baseline characteristics were included: 17 patients underwent a reboot surgery plus a bilateral mucoplasty and 47 a reboot surgery only. LKM, Meltzer and SNOT-22 scores showed significant differences before and after surgery in both groups, with higher improvement in the mucoplasty group. A greater mean improvement of 20.5 ± 6.4 points in SNOT-22 change was associated with bilateral mucoplasty. CONCLUSION: Bilateral mucoplasty plus reboot surgery constitutes a useful surgical resource in Type-2 CRSwNP patients, showing improved endoscopic, radiological and QoL outcomes one year after surgery. Further studies are needed to determine their long-term benefits.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 is a major etiologic agent that causes bloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Shiga toxin (Stx) is the main virulence factor of EHEC responsible for the progression to HUS. Although many laboratories have made efforts to develop an effective treatment for Stx-mediated HUS, a specific therapy has not been found yet. Human consumption of bovine colostrum is known to have therapeutic effects against several gastrointestinal infections because of the peptide and proteins (including antibodies) with direct antimicrobial and endotoxin-neutralizing effects contained in this fluid. We have previously demonstrated that colostrum from Stx type 2 (Stx2)-immunized pregnant cows effectively prevents Stx2 cytotoxicity and EHEC O157:H7 pathogenicity. In this study we evaluated the preservation of the protective properties of hyperimmune colostrum against Stx2 (HIC-Stx2) after pasteurization and spray-drying processes by performing in vitro and in vivo assays. Our results showed that reconstituted HIC-Stx2 colostrum after pasteurization at 60°C for 60 min and spray-dried under optimized conditions preserved specific IgG that successfully neutralized Stx2 cytotoxicity on Vero cells. Furthermore, this pasteurized/dehydrated and reconstituted HIC-Stx2 preserved the protective capacity against EHEC infection in a weaned mice model. The consumption of hyperimmune HIC-Stx2 bovine colostrum could be effective for HUS prevention in humans as well as in EHEC control in calves. However, further studies need to be done to consider its use for controlling EHEC infections.

BACKGROUND: We report a novel surgical technique based on an endonasal free mucosal graft (mucoplasty) for improving clinical results and local healing in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). METHODS: Patients diagnosed with bilateral CRSwNP scheduled for endoscopic sinus surgery were included. They underwent complete removal of anterior and posterior ethmoid cells, in addition to bilateral type III frontal sinusotomy. An endoscopic mucoplasty was performed in the left nasal cavity, whereas the right nasal cavity served as control. Patients were evaluated before surgery and 6 months after operation, including Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for olfaction, endoscopic evaluation using the Modified und-Kennedy (MLK) scoring system and healing evaluation. RESULTS: Ten patients (mean age 53.6 years) were included. A significa t decrease of SNOT-22 score from 57.0 (21.1) to 20.3 (20.6) (P = 0.024) and a non-significa t decrease of VAS for olfaction score from 9.3 (0.5) to 4.6 (3.9) were found. Preoperative mean MLK score was 4.9 (0.7) in the right nostril and 4.8 (1.0) in the left one. After operation, there was a greater decrease of MLK score in the left nostril than in the right (1.9 [1.0] vs. 1.3 [0.8], P = 0.034). Better healing was proved in the nostril with the mucoplasty. CONCLUSION: Endonasal mucoplasty could be an effective, safe and feasible complementary surgical procedure in the treatment of CRSwNP. The reduced local edema associated with lower amount of secretions may confer a better control in the frontal recess, orbital wall and nasal roof.

RESUMEN

High-accuracy tilt or roll angle measurement is required for a variety of engineering and scientific applications. A cyclic interferometer with multiple reflections has been developed to measure small tilt angles. To accomplish this task, a novel and simple method, phase shift by polarization, was developed. The results of these studies show that the multiple reflection cyclic interferometers can be used to measure object tilts on the order of 0.2 nano-radians. We develop the theory for polarization phase step and show that accurate measurements can be made with the cyclic interferometer.

Over the past few years, symptoms akin to late blight disease have been reported on a variety of crop plants in South America. Despite the economic importance of these crops, the causal agents of the diseases belonging to the genus Phytophthora have not been completely characterized. In this study, a new Phytophthora species was described in Colombia from tree tomato (Solanum betaceum), a semi-domesticated fruit grown in northern South America. Comprehensive phylogenetic, morphological, population genetic analyses, and infection assays to characterize this new species, were conducted. All data support the description of the new species, Phytophthora betacei sp. nov. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that this new species belongs to clade 1c of the genus Phytophthora and is a close relative of the potato late blight pathogen, P. infestans. Furthermore, it appeared as the sister group of the P. andina strains collected from wild Solanaceae (clonal lineage EC-2). Analyses of morphological and physiological characters as well as host specificity showed high support for the differentiation of these species. Based on these results, a complete description of the new species is provided and the species boundaries within Phytophthora clade 1c in northern South America are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and predictors of negative large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ) following the introduction of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) cervical screening. METHOD: A retrospective cohort study. Two independent cohorts, who attended for a LLETZ procedure, before and after the introduction of HPV cervical screening were compared. For each cohort, 401 individuals were randomly selected from a colposcopy database. Clinical and colposcopic variables were extracted. The incidence of negative LLETZ was estimated in each cohort. Regression analysis was used to adjust for potential confounders and explore predictors of negative LLETZ. RESULTS: Eighty women (19.9%) from the pre-HPV testing cohort and 54 women (13.4%) from the post-HPV cohort were negative for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (RR 0.75, CI: 0.55 to 0.93). In the post-HPV testing cohort, independent predictors of negative LLETZ were low grade cytology (RR 3.60, CI: 2.18-5.97) and a type 3 transformation zone (TZ) (RR 2.88, CI: 1.76-4.72). Women with both low grade cytology and a TZ type 3 were 10.4 times more likely to have a negative LLETZ (absolute risk 40%, 95% CI: 27-54%). CONCLUSIONS: Despite a 25% reduction in negative LLETZ following the introduction of HPV cervical screening, the incidence is still high. These results highlight the importance of continuing to improve the specificity of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia screening; this should include the use of biomarkers that detect HPV-transforming infections and techniques that sample an entirely endocervical transformation zone.

Pollen is an important cause of allergic respiratory ailments in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA). However, very little is known if ambient air temperature correlates with the early blooming of plants observed in other urban areas around the world. A research study was conducted during the dry season of 2012-2013 at three representative sites of the MCMA with different urban characteristics with the aim to understand the relationships between the profusion and diversity of pollen against temperature and other meteorological variables and degree of urbanization. Pollen samples were collected using a Hirst-type trap sampler in the sites: Merced (highly urbanized), Iztapalapa (medium-high urbanized) and Coyoacan (moderately urbanized). Urbanization levels were determined using a composite index based on population density, proportion of surface covered by construction and asphalt, and urban heat island intensity. A set of representative pollen sampling tapes were assayed under a light microscope at magnification of ×1,000 and converted to grains per cubic meter. The most representative pollen types found in the three sites were, regardless of urbanization levels were: Fraxinus, Cupressaceae/Taxodiaceae, Casuarina, Alnus, Myrtaceae, and Pinus. Total pollen concentration was greatest in the moderately urbanized area, although earlier blooming took place at the highly urbanized zone. Total pollen concentration in the medium-high urbanized site has the lowest because the green areas in this zone of MCMA are few. In a diurnal basis, the most abundant pollen types peaked near midday or in the afternoon evening at the three sites. A Spearman test showed a positive correlation among bihourly pollen concentrations, temperature and relative humidity in all sites, but wind speed just correlated in Iztapalapa and Coyoacan. The results obtained suggest that Urban Heat Island Intensity can disturb flowering periods and pollen concentrations, largely in the highly urbanized areas. A principal components analysis established that the concentrations of each pollen type differed across the urbanization gradients. Additionally, it was found that a large number of allergenic pollens are produced by ornamental trees, some only recently introduced by urban planners.

Nasal hyperreactivity is the abnormal reaction of nasal tissue to a stimulus that is innocuous to most people. This response is caused by dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system at various levels of the nasal autonomic reflex arc. Various stimuli (methacholine, histamine, adenosine 5'-monophosphate, cold air, mannitol, rapsaicin, phentolamine, and distilled water) have been used in an attempt to find the test that most reliably differentiates between healthy individuals and patients and also between different types of rhinitis. Despite the small number of publications available, in the present review, we provide an update on current nonspecific nasal provocation techniques. The studies published to date are not comparable: the stimuli applied act through different mechanisms and are used to assess different pathways, and the methodologies differ in terms of selection of participants, concentrations used, and assessment of response (criteria for positivity). Given the limited use of nonspecific nasal provocation tests in routine clinical practice, we believe that more studies are warranted to address the research issues we present at the end of the present review, for example, the need to standardize the methodology for each test or even the clinical benefits of knowing whether or not a patient has nasal hyperreactivity.

BACKGROUND: Mortality of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains high. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) has revolutionized OHCA treatment, but our understanding of the ECPR responder's clinical profile is incomplete. Carotid artery stenosis (CAS) is a well-established cardiovascular disease risk factor. The impact of CAS on OHCA outcomes remains unelucidated. OBJECTIVE: To assess whether CAS burden affects the outcomes of OHCA patients treated with ECPR. METHODS: This study included patients with OHCA admitted for ECPR consideration, who had carotid ultrasonography performed. A numeric scale was applied to the plaque to create a CAS burden numeric scale. The primary outcome of the study was survival at discharge, compared among the different degrees of CAS. Neurologically intact survival and surrogate markers of neurologic injury were the secondary study endpoints. To assess the independent effect of CAS burden on survival to hospital discharge, we conducted a logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Between 2019 and 2023, carotid ultrasonography was performed on 163 patients who were admitted for refractory OHCA. CAS burden was equally distributed between the right and left carotid arteries. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the CAS burden was significantly associated with both overall and neurologically intact survival at discharge (p = 0.004). A linear relationship between the CAS burden and neuron-specific and S-100 levels was identified. Patients with normal carotids were significantly less likely to have encephalopathy on electroencephalograms. CONCLUSION: CAS burden independently predicts the risk for worse survival and neurologic outcomes in patients suffering refractory OHCA who are treated with ECPR.

The cytoplasmic incompatibility induced by the bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia is attributed to chromatin modification in the sperm of infected individuals and is only 'rescued' by infected females after fertilization. Chorthippus parallelus is a grasshopper with 2 subspecies that form a hybrid zone in the Pyrenees in which this Wolbachia-generated cytoplasmic incompatibility has recently been described. The analysis of certain cytogenetic traits (sex chromosome-linked heterochromatic bands, nucleolar organizing region expression, spermatid size and morphology, and number of chiasmata formed) in pure and hybrid Chorthippus parallelus that are infected and not infected by this bacterium indicates that the infection affects some of these traits and, in the case of the spermatids, reveals a synergism between the infection and the hybrid condition. These results are interpreted as being secondary effects of the chromatin modification induced by Wolbachia which thereby support this model of modification/rescue. The possible effects of these cytogenetic variations on affected individuals are also considered.

The genus Cosmos is native of America and is constituted by 34 species; 28 of them are endemic of Mexico. The cosmos are used as a nematicide, antimalarial, and antioxidative agent. The aim of this study was to estimate the genetic diversity among 7 cosmos species based on random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and inter-simple sequences repeats (ISSR) markers. With RAPD markers, the obtained polymorphism was 91.7 % and the genetic diversity was 0.33, whereas these values were 65.6%, and 0.22 from ISSR markers, respectively, indicating the presence of high genetic diversity among the Cosmos species that were analyzed. The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean dendrograms that were obtained with both markers were notably similar, revealing 2 clusters and indicating a clear genetic differentiation among the Cosmos species that were assessed. The first cluster comprised the species Cosmos sulphureus, Cosmos pacificus, and Cosmos diversifolius, while the second cluster included the species Cosmos purpureus, Cosmos crithmifolius, Cosmos bipinnatus, and Cosmos parviflorus. Besides this, the Cosmos species were clustered according to their collection sites. The Mantel test corroborates the correlation between the genetic distance and the geographic altitude of each Cosmos species. The results suggest that it is necessary to preserve the Cosmos species in their natural habitat in addition to the germoplasm collection for ex situ conservation.

OBJECTIVE: MRI is the imaging technique that is best suited to evaluating the response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy for locally advanced breast cancer. We aimed to a) quantify the response in the molecular subtypes, b) describe the morphological and dynamic variation, and c) determine whether the molecular phenotype changes after chemotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 75 carcinomas in 69 patients who underwent MRI both before and after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The response to treatment was classified as a) complete response, b) major partial response, c) minor partial response, or d) no response. We quantified the response in each molecular subtype (Luminal A, Luminal B, Her2+, and triple negative). The morphological changes were classified as a) concentric reduction, b) fragmentation, c) ductal enhancement, or d) necrosis. The dynamic changes affected the maximum intensity peak and the post-initial enhancement. RESULTS: In the 4 molecular subtypes, the 4 types of response were seen. The response was good in 84.6% of the triple negative subtype, in 76.9% of the Luminal B subtype, in 75.6% of the Luminal A subtype, and in 69.2% of the Her2+ subtype. The predominant morphological change was concentric reduction (75%). The predominant dynamic change was a decrease in the maximum intensity peak (<100% in 64.2%), and type I or II curves were seen in 85.7%. CONCLUSIONS: The triple negative subtype responded best to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The most common changes were concentric reduction and a decrease in the maximum intensity peak, with fewer washout curves. We observed a change in the molecular phenotype between the specimen at diagnosis and the final study in 12.2% of cases.

Estradiol is an ovarian steroid hormone that peaks shortly before ovulation and significantly affects various brain regions and neurotransmitter systems, with similar and differential effects with progesterone, another ovarian hormone. Studies investigating the neurocognitive processes during the menstrual cycle have focused on the early follicular phase (EFP) characterized by low estradiol and progesterone levels and the mid-luteal phase (MLP) with high estradiol and progesterone levels. However, most studies have failed to include the ovulatory phase, characterized by high estradiol and low progesterone levels. Given the various hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle, we revisited studies suggesting that the menstrual cycle did not affect verbal and spatial abilities and observed that many contain mixed results. Comparing these studies makes it possible to identify relevant modulating factors, such as sample size, participant age, accurate selection of days for testing, asymmetrical practice effects, genetic polymorphisms, and task difficulty. More robust findings are related to improved mental rotation capacity during EFP with challenging tasks and differences in brain activation among menstrual cycle phases during the execution of spatial and verbal tasks. During MLP, less robust findings were observed, possibly modulated by the complex effects of the two hormones on the brain. In conclusion, we propose that it is crucial to include all three menstrual cycle phases and consider these modulating factors to avoid confounding findings.

Prostaglandins (PGs) are important factors in the physiology of human parturition and the control of uterine contractility. We have characterized the expression of 15 genes from all stages of the PG pathway in human pregnant and non-pregnant (NP) myometrium and in other uterine tissues at delivery, and the results show patterns indicative of different capacities for PG synthesis and catabolism in each tissue. In placenta, the PG synthase expression profile favours production of PGD2, PGE2 and PGF2, with high levels of PG transporters and catabolic PG dehydrogenase suggesting rapid PG turnover. Choriodecidua is primed for PGE2, PGF2 and PGD2 production and high PG turnover, whereas amnion expresses genes for PGE2 synthesis with low levels of PG transporters and dehydrogenase. In umbilical cord, PGI2 synthase is highly expressed. In pregnant myometrium, PGI2, PGD2 and PGF2 synthases are highly expressed, whereas PG dehydrogenase is underexpressed. Myometrium from women with spontaneous or induced labour had higher expression of the PGH2 synthase PTGS2 than tissue from women not-in-labour. Myometrium from NP women had lower levels of PG synthases and higher levels of PG dehydrogenase than pregnant myometrium. Discriminant function analysis showed that expression of selected genes in myometrium could distinguish groups of women with different modes of labour from each other and from NP women. In cultured myometrial cells, there was a dose-dependent stimulatory effect of interleukin 1ß and tumour necrosis factor α on PTGS2, PTGES and AKR1B1 (PGF synthase) expression.

RESUMEN

Solanum viarum Dunal (tropical soda apple) belongs to the section Acanthophora in the genus Solanum, which includes nearly 20 neotropical species of herbs and small shrubs (2). The species in this section are sometimes called the 'spiny Solanums' (2) and are adapted mainly to highly disturbed habitats and open secondary forests. The center of diversity is eastern Brazil (3). Since the early 1990s, S. viarum has been a problematic weed in Florida where it was listed as a noxious weed in 1993, followed in 1994 by its addition to the Federal Noxious Weed List of the USDA. On 17 April 2010, 12 plants of S. viarum located close to a S. betaceum crop (tree tomato) in the province of Caldas (Department of Antioquia, central northwestern Colombia) were found with symptoms similar to late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans on S. tuberosum (potato). Fifteen leaves from 12 plants with blackish, water-soaked lesions showing a white sporulation on the abaxial side were collected and processed within 3 days. The leaves were placed in a humid chamber and incubated in darkness at room temperature (18°C mean temperature) until sporulation was observed. Microscopic characteristics were consistent with Phytophthora spp. Only one axenic culture was obtained by successive subcultures in rye B agar plates. After an incubation period of 8 days, plates were washed with distilled water and ovoid, semipapillate caduceus sporangia ranging from 38 to 41 µm long (average 39; N = 86) and 23 to 29 µm wide (average 26; N = 86) were observed. To fulfill Koch's postulates and test the isolate for the ability to infect potato as well as Solanum spp. associated with potato crops in Colombia, triplicate pathogenicity tests were carried out on three detached leaves of S. viarum, S. tuberosum, and S. americanum (American nightshade). A 1 × 104 sporangia/ml suspension of the Phytophthora isolate, estimated using a haemocytometer, was obtained from 8-day-old cultures grown on rye B agar. The suspension was incubated at 4°C for 2 h to induce zoospore release. The leaves were then inoculated by spraying them until runoff. After an incubation period of 5 days at 18°C in a humidity chamber, mycelia, sporangia, and brownish lesions, similar to those described above, were observed in the leaves of all three hosts, indicating pathogenicity. DNA extraction was performed from the P. infestans isolate (4). Four nuclear loci, ITS, ß-tubulin, Ras, and Avr3a, as well as one mitochondrial gene, cytochrome c oxidase 1 (Cox1), were amplified and sequenced. Sequences were compared with GenBank databases using Blastn. In all cases, the best hits corresponded to P. infestans (GenBank Accession No. HQ639930 for Avr3A, HQ639931 for ß-tubulin, HQ639932 for Cox1, HQ639933 for iRas, HQ639934 for Ras, and JF419363 for ITS). Reports of P. infestans causing typical late blight symptoms on wild solanaceous plants are becoming more frequent and have been made from other countries such as Peru (1). To our knowledge, this is the first time that P. infestans has been observed and isolated from S. viarum in Colombia, introducing the possibility of this wild solanaceous weed as another late blight host. The effect of sex hormones on global-local tasks has rarely been studied, offering, when done, conflicting results possibly modulated by the congruency between hierarchical stimuli, and by the attentional demands. Here, we examined the global advantage (GA) effect in men (with high testosterone levels), women in the mid-luteal phase (with high levels of estradiol and progesterone), in the ovulatory phase (with high estradiol but low progesterone levels); and in the early follicular phase and with hormonal contraceptive (HC) use (with low sex hormone levels). The level of processing (global-local), the congruency (congruent vs. incongruent), and attentional demands (divided vs. selective) were manipulated. The divided-incongruent condition was sensible to estradiol and progesterone levels and, in this condition, mid-luteal women performed more locally while men performed more globally. The selective-incongruent condition was sensible to the testosterone level and, in this condition, men were faster. The HC group showed a congruency effect in the GA reaction times (RTs) during both, divided and selective conditions. Finally, the GA RTs of the ovulatory group differed from the early follicular and mid-luteal groups only in the congruent-selective condition, but the performance was not related with sex hormone levels. This result is interpreted in relation with the brain effects of estradiol in the absence but not in the presence of progesterone. Thus, sex, menstrual cycle, HC, task difficulty and sex hormones seem to modulate performance in the global-local task. These factors represent an important source of variability in studies focused on the processing of hierarchical stimuli and allow apparently inconsistent data to be explained.

This study examines the influence of sex, menstrual cycle, hormonal contraceptives (HC) and sex hormone levels in following egocentric navigation instructions with or without landmarks. Estradiol seem to bias the reference frame for navigation during estrous cycle of female rats. However, previous studies in humans found no differences in overall navigation between women in their early follicular and mid-luteal menstrual cycle phases, whose performance was worse than that of men. Our study hypothesis was that the performance of women would be improved during the peri-ovulatory phase and would remain the same during placebo and active phases of HC users. The study included 21 men, 62 women with natural menstrual cycle (21 during early follicular phase, 20 during peri-ovulatory phase, and 21 during mid-luteal phase), and 38 women that were receiving HC (13 during placebo phase and 25 during active phase). The men outperformed the women with a natural menstrual cycle when following egocentric instructions without landmarks. However, the women's performance varied according to the phase of their menstrual cycle, differing from men during early follicular and mid-luteal phases but not during the peri-ovulatory phase. The use of HC also improved the performance of women to the extent that the difference with men disappeared. No differences were observed between HC-placebo and HC-active user groups during egocentric navigation without landmarks and among all groups during egocentric navigation with landmarks. Analysis of salivary hormones showed that testosterone levels were higher in men and that estradiol levels in women were higher during peri-ovulatory and mid-luteal phases and also in HC users. Progesterone levels were higher in women during the mid-luteal phase. These results appear compatible with beneficial effect of testosterone and estradiol on egocentric navigation without landmarks and with a block of this effect produced by progesterone.

As radial root resistance (Rp) represents one of the key components of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum resistance catena modulating water transport, understanding its control is essential for physiologists, modelers and breeders. Reports of Rp, however, are still scarce and scattered in the scientific literature. In this study, we assessed genetic variability in Rp and its dependence on temperature in five widely used olive cultivars. In a first experiment, cultivar differences in Rp at 25 °C were evaluated from flow-pressure measurements in excised roots and subsequent analysis of root traits. In a second experiment, similar determinations were performed continually over a 5-h period in which temperature was gradually increased from 12 to 32 °C, enabling the assessment of Rp response to changing temperature. Despite some variability, our results did not show statistical differences in Rp among cultivars in the first experiment. In the second, cultivar differences in Rp were not significant at 12 °C, but they became so as temperature increased. Furthermore, the changes in Rp between 12 and 32 °C were higher than those expected by the temperature-driven decrease in water viscosity, with the degree of that change differing among cultivars. Also, Rp at 25 °C reached momentarily in the second experiment was consistently higher than in the first at that same, but fixed, temperature. Overall, our results suggest that there is limited variability in Rp among the studied cultivars when plants have been exposed to a given temperature for sufficient time. Temperature-induced variation in Rp might thus be partly explained by changes in membrane permeability that occur slowly, which explains why our values at 25 °C differed between experiments. The observed cultivar differences in Rp with warming also indicate faster acclimation of Rp to temperature changes in some cultivars than others.

The state of contraction in smooth muscle cells of the human uterus is dependent on the interaction of activated forms of actin and myosin. Ras homology (RHO) proteins are small monomeric GTP-binding proteins that regulate actin polymerisation and myosin phosphorylation in smooth muscle cells. Their action is determined by their level of expression, GTP-bound state, intracellular localisation and phosphorylated status. Agonist activated RHO proteins bind to effector kinases such as RHO kinase (ROCK) and diaphanous proteins (DIAPH) to regulate smooth muscle contraction by two mechanisms: ROCK activates smooth muscle myosin either by direct phosphorylation at Ser19/Thr18 or through inhibition of myosin phosphatase which is a trimeric protein regulated by ROCK and by other protein kinases. Actin-polymerising proteins such as DIAPH homolog 1 increase filamentous actin assembly to enhance acto-myosin cross bridge formation and contraction. This review explores recent advances in RHO protein signalling in human myometrium and proposes areas of further research to investigate the involvement of these proteins in the regulation of uterine contractility in pregnancy and labour.
