RESUMEN
Q-mode factor analysis has been used to partition the variability of environmentally active metals in Delaware Bay sediments. Three factors, identified as a natural background source, an oceanic or seawater source, and an estuarine source, account for 96 percent of the metal variability.
RESUMEN
Tonsillar region carcinoma ranks as the second most common malignancy of the upper aerodigestive tract. Tobacco and alcohol use are the most important risk factors. The rate of cervical metastasis may be as high as 70%. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or any combination of these modalities. Overall survival is in the range of 50%.

Heerfordt syndrome is an unusual manifestation of systemic sarcoidosis and is characterized by parotitis, uveitis, and facial nerve paralysis. A case is presented and the clinical manifestations are discussed. Angiotensin converting enzyme assays along with tissue biopsy demonstrating noncaseating granulomas confirm the diagnosis.

Soft tissue injury in total hip replacements has recently developed into a main topic of orthopaedic surgery. The M. glutaeus medius is at risk to be injured in Watson-Jones' approach to the hip. A special technique in positioning of the leg offers the possibility to save the integrity of the muscles. While profiling the femur shaft the leg is held underneath the opposite leg in outer rotation, hyperextention and forced adduction. The advantage in comparison to other less invasive techniques is the common supine position of the patient on the table. The different technical steps are easy to achieve.

In fractures of the elbow with an associated fracture of the coronoid process, the size of the coronoid fragment determines the stability of the joint. A diminution of the arch of the incisura semilunaris by about 30 degrees causes instability of the elbow. We present an alternative way of treating the special case of a fracture of the coronoid process combined with comminuted fracture of the proximal end of the radius. A suitable fragment of the head of the radius is used to reconstruct the coronoid process. The stability achieved allows early functional postoperative treatment with a good range of movement at the elbow joint.

A radioimmunoassay (RIA) procedure has been developed for the measurement of 5 alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione (DHP) in human plasma after ether extraction of the plasma-samples, followed by column chromatography. The antiserum was generated in rabbits with 6 alpha-carboxyethylmer-captoprogesterone-BSA conjugate. The high affinity (Ka = 3.72 X 10(9) l/mol) antiserum binds 40% of 40 picograms of tritiated 5 alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione at working dilutions of 1 : 2800. Negligible cross-reactivity of the antiserum was detected with 5 beta-pregnane-3,20-dione (1.8%). Other hydroxylated pregnanes showed minor cross-reactivity (5-40%). The cross-reacting steroids were all separated from pregnanedione by one chromatographic step. The plasma levels of 5 alpha-pregnane-3,20-dione were measured from 22nd to 42nd week of normal pregnancy and compared to published data.
