RESUMEN

AIM: Aim of the study was to investigate pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prognosis of the fetal intra-abdominal umbilical vein varix (FIUVV). METHODS: We reviewed all cases of FIUVV diagnosed in our hospital from August 1999 to December 2002. The umbilical vein was considered dilated when the measurement was above 2 standard deviation of the mean for gestational age. In all cases prenatal echocardiography and post-natal karyotype were performed. Our cases were also considered in the light of all the cases of FIUVV reported in literature. RESULTS: FIUVV was diagnosed in 5 cases between 22 and 37 weeks' gestation, among an unselected population of pregnant woman. Karyotype was normal in all cases; an apparently isolated septal ventricular defect was present in one patient. No obstetrical complications due to the presence of FIUVV (i.e. thrombosis) were associated. CONCLUSIONS: In our case series no obstetrical complications, and only one mild fetal anomaly were present. In literature an high association has been reported between the presence of FIUVV and fetal anomalies and/or obstetrical complications. Fetal echocardiography and detailed US study of fetal anatomy is needed to exclude associated anomalies. Karyotype should be offered only when other fetal anomalies are present. In presence of FIUVV, a close fetal monitoring by serial color Doppler and ultrasonographic examinations should be performed.

RESUMEN

In the present study we analysed the possible effect of age, sex and smoking on the mean values of micronucleus (MN) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) frequencies on peripheral blood obtained from 38 subjects ranging in age from 16 to 63 years and 16 centenarians. The mean number of binucleated cells with micronuclei varied in function of age and sex (as demonstrated by the analysis of covariance (F=13.13; P<0.001), particularly evident was the increment observed in women with increasing age (interaction age/sex: F=5.53; P<0.05). Smoking habits had no effects on MN frequency (F=0.36; P>0.05). Sex (F=4.18; P<0.05) and smoking habits (F=14.64; P<0.001) influenced significantly SCE per cell frequencies, but age had no effects on them (F=2.45; P>0.05). The age-associated increase of sex chromosome loss was studied using fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) on interphase nuclei. The loss of Y signals was observed in approximately 10% of interphase cells from the centenarians males, that is six times more often than in the younger control men (approximately 1.6%). The frequency of X signal loss (approximately 1.7%) in young women was similar to that observed in male controls of the same age but the incidence of the X chromosome aneuploidy in centenarian females was appreciably higher (approximately 22%) than that found for the Y chromosome in males. These results were correlated with the data on MN formation and a positive correlation between the percentage of aneuploid cells (FISH) and MN values was observed (r=0.50; P<0.05).

RESUMEN

Amino acid losses in peritoneal dialyzate during CAPD were less than 2 g a day (15, 128 micrometers). CAPD does not correct the tyrosine/phenylalanine ratio in plasma and does not prevent accumulation of 3-methylhistidine.

RESUMEN

Studies in patients with uremia due to diabetes mellitus treated with CAPD show that the kinetics of amino acid equilibration between dialysate and plasma behave differently from those in patients with uremia of different etiology. Diabetics also have larger amino acid losses in dialysate.

RESUMEN

The equilibrium between plasma and peritoneal dialysis fluid has been studies for 23 amino acids during peritoneal exchanges at dwell times up to 8 hours in patients on CAPD. It is demonstrated that equilibration is a particular process typical for each amino acid which after 8 hour is nearly complete only for Glycine, Alanine and Asparagine.
