Teaching pulpectomy in paediatric dentistry: A national cross-sectional survey of dental schools in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Pulpectomy is used to treat primary teeth with irreversibly inflamed or necrotic pulp tissue. There is, however, a lack of consensus on clinical protocols for teaching pulpectomy at dental schools. AIM: To determine what faculty members at Brazilian dental schools are teaching about pulpectomy in primary teeth. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted using a 39-question survey available via the Google Forms® platform. A snowball sampling strategy was used for recruitment. Invitations to participate were sent via e-mail, WhatsApp® and Instagram®. The data were analysed descriptively. RESULTS: A total of 177 (58.4%) responses were obtained. Most faculty members recommended the use of Kerr hand files (66.1%), and 1% sodium hypochlorite was the most common choice for the irrigating solution (35.3%). Iodoform pastes were the first choice of faculty members (41.6%), and 60.5% of the faculty members recommended composite resin as the definitive restoration. CONCLUSION: Similarities were found in the teaching of pulpectomy for primary teeth among faculty members at dental schools in Brazil.

Can Palythoa cf. variabilis biochemical patterns be used to predict coral reef conservation state in Todos Os Santos Bay?

Coral reefs are one of the most diverse, complex and productive marine ecosystems on the planet. Global climate change and other anthropogenic impacts have had a strong impact on the equilibrium of these ecosystems and causing the denominated "coral reef crisis". One consequence of coral reef crisis is the phase shift in reef communities, where scleractinian corals responsible for the bioconstruction of the coralline building are replaced by macroalgae or soft corals. In Todos os Santos Bay (TSB) there is a rare case of phase shift caused by the soft coral Palythoa cf. variabilis. When in population outbreak, this coral species becomes dominant and leads to loss of scleractinian coral cover. Palythoa genus establishes a symbiotic relationship with dinoflagellate algae of the genus Symbiodinium, that is changed in phase shift coral reefs, but other alterations remain unknown. In this study, the metabolism (oxidative damage, antioxidant and biotransformation enzymes, electron transport chain activity and photosynthetic pigments) of P. cf. variabilis from reefs in different conservation states was studied to identify and relate if changes that may occur in the biochemical and metabolism of the coral might trigger the population outbreak, identify parameters recognizing if corals are in stress and assess if one or more parameters can reflect the level of stress organisms are experiencing. The results obtained evidenced a clear distinction in the biochemistry and metabolism of corals from conserved sites and sites in phase shift, and these changes may be the trigger for population outbreak. Some of the parameters were able to discriminate the level of stress corals are experiencing and may allow to recognize the most at-risk coral reefs that need immediate intervention and prevent the entry into or revert P. cf. variabilis outbreak and phase shift in coral reefs. Actions like these can be of vital importance for the preservation of TSB coral reefs and possibly for other threatened reefs worldwide.

Dental and health aspects in the co-occurrence of Treacher Collins and Down syndromes: Case report.

The goal of this case report is to identify the dental care of a patient who has co-occurrence of Treacher Collins and Down syndromes. It is the third case reported in the literature and the first relating dental treatment under general anesthesia and multidisciplinary importance. It was necessary the child's nutritional assessment in this case. This case highlights the importance of individualizing therapeutic protocols, due to the behavioral aspects of patients with special needs, optimizing treatment results in a single session under general anesthesia. Oral health is closely related to overall health, and it is important for awareness that the whole influences the success of medical treatment.

Análise da produção científica brasileira em orientação profissional: um convite a novos rumos / Analysis of the brazilian scientific production in vocational guidance: an invitation to new directions / Análisis de la producción científica brasileña en orientación profesional: una invitación a nuevas direcciones

Este artigo apresenta uma avaliação da produção científica brasileira na área de orientação profissional no período de 2011 a 2015, dando prosseguimento a trabalhos realizados previamente por diversos pesquisadores. Paras as buscas nas bases BVS-Psi e Index-Psi, foram utilizados os termos “orientação vocacional”, “escolha profissional”, “desenvolvimento profissional” e “escolha de carreira” e o corpus de análise final foi de 70 artigos. Dentre os achados, destacam-se: uma tendência incipiente de redução do número de publicações anuais sobre o tema, redução do número de publicações teóricas ao longo do período pesquisado, bem como de estudos a respeito da qualidade de técnicas de OP; permanência de estudantes de Ensino Médio e universitários como públicos-alvo mais estudados. A agenda de pesquisas proposta em trabalhos de revisão prévios não foi plenamente atendida. Reforçam-se sugestões anteriores, acrescentando-se um convite a outras possibilidades ainda não focadas pelos pesquisadores da área.

This article presents an evaluation of the scientific production in vocational guidance in the period from 2011 to 2015, continuing the work previously performed by several researchers. The search was performed in Brazilian database BVS-Psi and Index-Psi using the terms Vocational Guidance, Professional Choice, Professional development and Career Choice, and the last analysis corpus was composed of 70 papers. Among the findings are: an incipient trend of reduction in the number of annual publications on the subject; reduction in the number of theoretical publications over analyzed period, as well as reduction of studies about the quality of counseling techniques; maintenance of high school and college students as the most studied target audiences. The research agenda proposed in previous reviews has not been fully met. This study reinforces earlier suggestions and adds an invitation to other possibilities not yet focused by researchers.
