RESUMEN

Molecular imprinting has grown considerably over the last decade with more and more applications being developed. The use of this approach for the generation of enzyme-mimics is here reviewed with a particular focus on the most recent achievements using different polymer formats such as microgels and nanogels, beads, membranes and also silica nanoparticles.

RESUMEN

This report presents the views of over 1000 administrators, nurses and physicians with respect to the responsibilities, authority and impact of the medical director in a long-term care facility (LTCF), as well as the nature and future of long-term care and geriatric medicine in the USA. Nurses, administrators and physicians were more able to agree on the bureaucratic functions of the medical director than on the functions which might be considered more clinical or activist in terms of the total needs of the LTCF. There was no consensus about the external factors which might determine the future of LTC, i.e. alternatives to institutionalization, public attitudes or community hospital relations. Instead, concern seemed to focus upon the "low level" of funding for LTC. With respect to the nature of LTC itself, most respondents felt that the area was clinically challenging. However, only 40 percent of the physicians believed that clinical skills were more important than a sympathetic regard for patients. As a corollary, physicians were the least supportive of geriatrics as a new specialty in medicine.

RESUMEN

Adult male Long-Evans rats and White Leghorn hens were given 30 mg/kg mipafox ip. Administration of this organophosphorus ester resulted in > or = 89% inhibition of brain and spinal cord neurotoxic esterase activity in both species 4 hr after dosing. Our sequential, comparative study of the bilateral mipafox-induced neuropathy in the medulla and cervical spinal cord in hens and rats demonstrated that the rats had well-developed, vacuolar axonopathic lesions in the fasciculus gracilis by post-dosing day 7. Severely affected rats with such lesions were noted through day 21, but not subsequently (days 28 and 35). The hen had a slower developing, but more severe, consistent and longer lasting neuropathy than the rat. In these birds, lesions in the medulla and rostral cervical spinal cord levels were more extensive, involving large regions of both the spinocerebellar tracts and fasciculus gracilis. Neuropathic changes, including myelinated fiber axonopathy and Wallerian-like degeneration, were prominent from days 14 - 35 in hens, and were associated with prominent gliosis in the later stages.

RESUMEN

This article describes the development of a gerontology curriculum in a college of health sciences and the interaction of gerontological concepts with the health professions curricula of the college. Some survey data on the characteristics of students enrolled in gerontology courses are presented. The article also provides a series of examples of how health science disciplines have expanded their instructional resources by focusing on the application of their discipline to the aged. This unique setting for a gerontology curriculum has allowed a greater diffusion of concepts of aging and services to the college's health professions curricula.
