Objective: To observe the effect of using hydrogen peroxide in periodic disinfection combining with continuous disinfection of dental unit waterlines and to provide references for the selection of waterway disinfection measures. Methods: A total of 4 dental units in a hospital of stomatology were selected through convenience sampling. The dental unit waterlines received periodic disinfection once every 4 weeks in addition to continuous disinfection (When the dental units were not used for more than 3 days, an additional periodic disinfection would be performed.). Periodic disinfection referred to filling up the waterlines with a disinfectant solution (1.4% hydrogen peroxide) by using the waterline disinfection device that came with the dental unit, immersing for 24 hours, and then emptying out the disinfectant solution. Continuous disinfection referred to using hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 0.014% as dental treatment water and using it to flush the waterlines for 2 minutes before any dental treatment in the morning and to flush the waterlines for 30 seconds after each dental treatment. The study lasted for 25 weeks, with periodic disinfection being performed for 7 times and continuous disinfection carried out for the rest of the dental treatment time. During the 25 weeks, water samples were collected from air/water syringes and high-speed handpieces. Then, the water samples were incubated and the bacterial concentration and the qualification rates were calculated accordingly. When the bacterial concentration≤100 CFU/ mL, the water samples were considered to be qualified. Waterline tubes of 1 cm were collected before and after the 25 weeks of disinfection with hydrogen peroxide. Biofilms in the waterline tube were observed under scanning electron microscope. Results: A total of 352 water samples were collected. Eight water samples were collected before disinfection with hydrogen peroxide, with the median of bacterial concentration being 3140 CFU/mL. On the first day of disinfection with hydrogen peroxide, the median bacterial concentration in dental treatment water was 7.5 CFU/mL. There was a significant difference between the bacterial concentration of the water samples before the disinfection and that after the disinfection (P=0.012). A total of 344 water samples were collected after the disinfection, with the median bacterial concentrations for air/water syringes and high-speed handpieces being 11 CFU/mL and 11CFU/mL and the qualified rates being 83.7% and 82.0%, respectively. There was no significant difference in bacterial concentration or the qualification rates. During week 1 through week 9 of the disinfection, the qualification rates of the dental treatment water always exceeded 80% in 8 weeks, with week 3 being the exception. In the two four-week disinfection periods of week 14 through week 17 and week 18 through week 21, the qualification rate was maintained at above 80% for only the first two weeks and started to decrease from the third week. Biofilm morphology was observed under scanning electron microscope. Before the disinfection, the biofilm was found to be a dense structure and the mixture of a large number of bacteria. After 25 weeks of the disinfection, the biofilm structure appeared to be loose and did not show consistent characteristics of a large number of bacteria retained. Conclusion: Periodic disinfection combined with continuous disinfection using hydrogen peroxide can effectively control contamination in dental unit waterlines. But the cycles of periodic disinfection and the concentration of hydrogen peroxide for continuous disinfection should be further discussed according to the actual clinical situation.

NK-lysin (NKL) is a positively charged antimicrobial peptide with broad-spectrum bactericidal activities. In this study, the cDNA sequence of NKL (TmNKL) from black scraper (Thamnaconus modestus) was cloned, which encodes a predicted polypeptide of 150 amino acids that contains a surfactant protein B domain with three disulfide bonds. Phylogenetically, TmNKL was most closely related to its teleost counterpart from tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes). Expression analysis demonstrated that TmNKL transcripts were constitutively expressed in all tested tissues, with the highest expression levels in the gills. Its expression was significantly upregulated in the gills, head kidney, and spleen after infection with Vibrio parahaemolyticus. A linear peptide (TmNKLP40L) and a disulfide-type peptide (TmNKLP40O) were further synthesized and results showed that disulfide bonds are not essential for bactericidal activities of TmNKL, and that both forms of TmNKL exhibited potent bactericidal activities against 4 gram- negative bacteria, including V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, Edwardsiella tarda, and V. harveyi. Observed antimicrobial activities are likely due to the effects of TmNKLP40L and TmNKLP40O treatment on disrupting the integrity of both inner and outer membrane of V. parahaemolyticus, resulting in hydrolysis of bacterial genomic DNA. Damaged cell membranes and leakage of intracellular contents were further confirmed using scanning and transmission microscopy. Moreover, administration of 1.0 µg/g TmNKLP40L or TmNKLP40O significantly decreased bacterial load in tissues and thus, pronouncedly enhanced the survival of V. parahaemolyticus-infected fish. Overall, our results demonstrated that TmNKL is a potent innate effector and provides protective effects against bacterial infection.

Since metastasis remains the primary reason for colorectal cancer (CRC) associated death, a better understanding of the molecular mechanism underlying CRC metastasis is urgently needed. Here, we elucidated the role of Cathepsin C (CTSC) in promoting CRC metastasis. The expression of CTSC was detected by real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry in the human CRC cohort. The metastatic capacities of CTSC-mediated metastasis were analyzed by in vivo metastasis model. Elevated CSTC expression was positively associated with tumor differentiation, tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, and AJCC stage and indicated poor prognosis in human CRC. CTSC overexpression in CRC cells promoted myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) recruitment by the CSF1/CSF1R axis. In contrast, the knockdown of CSF1 reduced CTSC-mediated MDSCs and TAMs infiltration and CRC metastasis. Depletion of either MDSCs or TAMs decreased CTSC-mediated CRC metastasis. In human CRC tissues, CTSC expression was positively associated with intratumoral MDSCs and TAMs infiltration. Furthermore, the combination of CTSC inhibitor AZD7986 and anti-PD-L1 antibody blocked CTSC-induced CRC metastasis. CTSC overexpression promoted MDSCs and TAMs infiltration by CSF1/CSF1R axis. Interruption of this oncogenic loop may provide a promising treatment strategy for inhibiting CTSC-driven CRC metastasis.

Argyrodite is a key structure type for ion-transporting materials. Oxide argyrodites are largely unexplored despite sulfide argyrodites being a leading family of solid-state lithium-ion conductors, in which the control of lithium distribution over a wide range of available sites strongly influences the conductivity. We present a new cubic Li-rich (>6 Li+ per formula unit) oxide argyrodite Li7SiO5Cl that crystallizes with an ordered cubic (P213) structure at room temperature, undergoing a transition at 473 K to a Li+ site disordered F4̅3m structure, consistent with the symmetry adopted by superionic sulfide argyrodites. Four different Li+ sites are occupied in Li7SiO5Cl (T5, T5a, T3, and T4), the combination of which is previously unreported for Li-containing argyrodites. The disordered F4̅3m structure is stabilized to room temperature via substitution of Si4+ with P5+ in Li6+xP1-xSixO5Cl (0.3 < x < 0.85) solid solution. The resulting delocalization of Li+ sites leads to a maximum ionic conductivity of 1.82(1) × 10-6 S cm-1 at x = 0.75, which is 3 orders of magnitude higher than the conductivities reported previously for oxide argyrodites. The variation of ionic conductivity with composition in Li6+xP1-xSixO5Cl is directly connected to structural changes occurring within the Li+ sublattice. These materials present superior atmospheric stability over analogous sulfide argyrodites and are stable against Li metal. The ability to control the ionic conductivity through structure and composition emphasizes the advances that can be made with further research in the open field of oxide argyrodites.

Extended anionic frameworks based on condensation of polyhedral main group non-metal anions offer a wide range of structure types. Despite the widespread chemistry and earth abundance of phosphates and silicates, there are no reports of extended ultraphosphate anions with lithium. We describe the lithium ultraphosphates Li3P5O14 and Li4P6O17 based on extended layers and chains of phosphate, respectively. Li3P5O14 presents a complex structure containing infinite ultraphosphate layers with 12-membered rings that are stacked alternately with lithium polyhedral layers. Two distinct vacant tetrahedral sites were identified at the end of two distinct finite Li6O1626- chains. Li4P6O17 features a new type of loop-branched chain defined by six PO43- tetrahedra. The ionic conductivities and electrochemical properties of Li3P5O14 were examined by impedance spectroscopy combined with DC polarization, NMR spectroscopy, and galvanostatic plating/stripping measurements. The structure of Li3P5O14 enables three-dimensional lithium migration that affords the highest ionic conductivity (8.5(5) × 10-7 S cm-1 at room temperature for bulk), comparable to that of commercialized LiPON glass thin film electrolytes, and lowest activation energy (0.43(7) eV) among all reported ternary Li-P-O phases. Both new lithium ultraphosphates are predicted to have high thermodynamic stability against oxidation, especially Li3P5O14, which is predicted to be stable to 4.8 V, significantly higher than that of LiPON and other solid electrolytes. The condensed phosphate units defining these ultraphosphate structures offer a new route to optimize the interplay of conductivity and electrochemical stability required, for example, in cathode coatings for lithium ion batteries.

We report a new polymorph of lithium aluminum pyrophosphate, LiAlP2O7, discovered through a computationally guided synthetic exploration of the Li-Mg-Al-P-O phase field. The new polymorph formed at 973 K, and the crystal structure, solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, adopts the orthorhombic space group Cmcm with a = 5.1140(9) Å, b = 8.2042(13) Å, c = 11.565(3) Å, and V = 485.22(17) Å3. It has a three-dimensional framework structure that is different from that found in other LiMIIIP2O7 materials. It transforms to the known monoclinic form (space group P21) above ∼1023 K. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the new polymorph is the most stable low-temperature structure for this composition among the seven known structure types in the AIMIIIP2O7 (A = alkali metal) families. Although the bulk Li-ion conductivity is low, as determined from alternating-current impedance spectroscopy and variable-temperature static 7Li NMR spectra, a detailed analysis of the topologies of all seven structure types through bond-valence-sum mapping suggests a potential avenue for enhancing the conductivity. The new polymorph exhibits long (>4 Å) Li-Li distances, no Li vacancies, and an absence of Li pathways in the c direction, features that could contribute to the observed low Li-ion conductivity. In contrast, we found favorable Li-site topologies that could support long-range Li migration for two structure types with modest DFT total energies relative to the new polymorph. These promising structure types could possibly be accessed from innovative doping of the new polymorph.

Cr-doped rutile, Ti1-xCrxO2-x/2-δ, powders and ceramics with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05 were prepared by solid state reaction and sintered at 1350 °C. Cr distribution is homogeneous with no evidence of either segregation or crystallographic shear plane formation. For high x compositions, >∼0.01, Cr substitution is charge-compensated ionically by oxygen vacancies with two Cr3+ ions for each vacancy and the materials are electronically insulating. For low x compositions, the materials are semiconducting. This is attributed to a new charge compensation mechanism involving Ti3+ ions created in response to the local electroneutrality requirement for two trivalent cations to be in close proximity to each oxygen vacancy. At very low dopant concentrations, ≪0.01, the dopants are well-separated and instead, some Ti3+ ions act as a second dopant to preserve local electroneutrality. For intermediate x compositions, a core-shell structure is proposed consisting of semiconducting grain interiors containing Ti3+ ions surrounded by a more insulating shell with Cr3+ ions as the only acceptor dopant. Lattice parameters show unusual, non-linear Vegard's law behaviour characterised by a maximum in cell volume at intermediate x ∼ 0.005, that is attributed to the composition-dependent presence of Ti3+ ions.

Complement component 4 (C4) has critical immunological functions in vertebrates. In the current study, a C4 homolog (gcC4) was identified in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The full-length 5458 bp gcC4 cDNA contained a 5148 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a protein of 1715 amino acids with a signal peptide and eight conservative domains. The gcC4 protein has a high level of identity with other fish C4 counterparts and is phylogenetically clustered with cyprinid fish C4. The gcC4 transcript shows wide tissue distribution and is inducible by Aeromonas hydrophila in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, its expression also fluctuates upon lipopolysaccharide or flagellin stimulation in vitro. During infection, the gcC4 protein level decreases or increases to varying degrees, and the intrahepatic C4 expression location changes. With gcC4 overexpression, interleukin 1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interferon transcripts are all upregulated by A. hydrophila infection. Meanwhile, overexpression of gcC4 reduces bacterial invasion or proliferation. Moreover, gcC4 may activate the NF-κB signaling pathway. These findings demonstrate the vital role of gcC4 in the innate immunity of grass carp.

Viral infection is often accompanied with alteration of intracellular redox state, especially an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and antioxidant cellular defenses. The previous studies showed that an antioxidant cellular defense system, the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), played an important role against spring viraemia of carp virus (SVCV) infection in fish. To further reveal the mediated mechanism that Nrf2 active state was affected by protein kinase C (PKC), here we evaluated SVCV replication in host cells by treated with a strong activator of PKC phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) and an inhibitor staurosporine. Our results showed that PMA significantly repressed SVCV replication and viral-induced apoptosis in Epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cell, suggesting that PKC may exhibit an anti-SVCV effect. Likewise, PMA resulted in a higher phosphorylation levels of PKCε rather than PKCα/ß to participate in the activation of Nrf2, mainly involved in the activation of Nrf2 phosphorylation of Ser40 to favor Nrf2 translocation to nucleus. Furthermore, the data revealed that PMA up-regulated an antiviral response heme oxygenase-1 (HO1) gene expression that was confirmed as the key player against SVCV infection by HO1 specific siRNA. Overall, this study provided a new therapeutic target for the treatment of SVCV infection, and modulating PKC activity could be used for the prevention and treatment of SVCV.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a novel class of eukaryotic transcripts. They are thought to act as a critical regulator of protein-coding gene expression. Herein, we identified and characterized 13 putative lncRNAs from the expressed sequence tags from secondary hair follicle of Cashmere goat. Furthermore, we investigated their transcriptional pattern in secondary hair follicle of Liaoning Cashmere goat during telogen and anagen phases. Also, we generated intracellular regulatory networks of upregulated lncRNAs at anagen in Wnt signaling pathway based on bioinformatics analysis. The relative expression of six putative lncRNAs (lncRNA-599618, -599556, -599554, -599547, -599531, and -599509) at the anagen phase is significantly higher than that at telogen. Compared with anagen, the relative expression of four putative lncRNAs (lncRNA-599528, -599518, -599511, and -599497) was found to be significantly upregulated at telogen phase. The network generated showed that a rich and complex regulatory relationship of the putative lncRNAs and related miRNAs with their target genes in Wnt signaling pathway. Our results from the present study provided a foundation for further elucidating the functional and regulatory mechanisms of these putative lncRNAs in the development of secondary hair follicle and cashmere fiber growth of Cashmere goat.

Homeobox protein Hox-C8 (HOXC8) is a member of Hox family. It is expressed in the dermal papilla of the skin and is thought to be associated with the hair inductive capacity of dermal papilla cells. In the present study, we isolated and characterized a full-length open reading frame of HOXC8 cDNA from the skin tissue of Liaoning cashmere goat, as well as, established a phylogenetic relationship of goat HOXC8 with that of other species. Also, we investigated the effect of methylation status of HOXC8 exon 1 at anagen secondary hair follicle on the cashmere fiber traits in Liaoning cashmere goat. The sequence analysis indicated that the obtained cDNA was 1134-bp in length containing a complete ORF of 729-bp. It encoded a peptide of 242 amino acid residues in length. The structural analysis indicated that goat HOXC8 contained a typical homeobox domain. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that Capra hircus HOXC8 had a closer genetic relationship with that of Ovis aries, followed by Bos Taurus and Bubalus bubalis. The methylation analysis suggested that the methylation degree of HOXC8 exon 1 in anagen secondary hair follicle might be involved in regulating the growth of cashmere fiber in Liaoning cashmere goat. Our results provide new evidence for understanding the molecular structural and evolutionary characteristics of HOXC8 in Liaoning cashmere goat, as well as, for further insight into the role of methylation degree of HOXC8 exon 1 regulates the growth of cashmere fiber in goat.

Aeromonas hydrophila is the causative agent of bacterial septicemia that is frequently observed in grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellus. In this study, we evaluated the biological parameters and immune enzymes in the liver of grass carp following A. hydrophila infection and quantified the alterations in liver histology using a semi-quantitative system. For the biological parameters, we found that the liver somatic index (LSI) was more sensitive than Fulton's condition factor (CF) and was significantly decreased at three days post-injection (DPI). At the immune enzyme level, the level of peroxidase (POD) in the liver significantly increased at 1 and 3 DPI. The activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) significantly increased at 3 DPI. Similarly, acid phosphatase (ACP) activity significantly increased at 1, 3, and 5 DPI. Histologically, the results indicated that the liver index at 3, 5, and 7 DPI was significantly higher than that of control groups. The regressive alterations as the highly variable reactions patterns and its index at 5 DPI was significantly higher than that of 1, 21 DPI, and the control groups. Based on our results, we suggest that grass carp resist A. hydrophila infection via an innate immune mechanism in the liver. The findings of this study will help elucidate the underlying mechanisms of resistance to A. hydrophila infection.

The mannan-binding lectin-associated serine protease-1 (MASP-1) gene is a crucial component of the lectin pathway in the complement and coagulation cascade. Although MASP-1 has been found in the immune system of teleosts, its immune functions in response to bacterial infection are unclear. In this study, we identified a MASP-1 homolog (gcMASP-1) in the grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The full-length 3308-bp gcMASP-1 cDNA includes a 2160-bp open reading frame encoding a protein composed of 719 amino acids with epidermal growth factor-like, complement control protein, and trypsin-like domains. gcMASP-1 shares a high similarity with MASP-1 counterparts in other species, and it is most closely related to Cyprinus carpio MASP-1 and Sinocyclocheilus anshuiensis MASP-1. Transcription of gcMASP-1 was widely distributed in different tissues and induced by Aeromonas hydrophila in vivo and in vitro. Expression of gcMASP-1 was also affected by lipopolysaccharide and flagellin stimulation in vitro. In cells over-expressing gcMASP-1, transcript levels of almost all components, except gcMBL and gcC5, were significantly enhanced, and gcIL1ß, gcTNF-α, gcIFN, gcCD59, gcC5aR1, and gcITGß-2 were significantly upregulated after exposure to A. hydrophila; gcMASP-1 interference downregulated the transcript levels after A. hydrophila challenge. In addition, gcMASP-1 activated NF-κB signaling. These findings indicate the vital role of gcMASP-1 in innate immunity in C. idella.

Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein family (BMPs). It is involved in the development and cycle of hair follicle, as well as, is thought to be a potential candidate gene for cashmere traits in goats. In the present study, we isolated and characterized a full-length open reading frame (ORF) of BMP4 cDNA from the skin tissue of Liaoning cashmere goat, and investigated the transcriptional pattern and methylation status of BMP4 gene in skin tissue of this breed during different stages of hair follicle cycle. The sequence analysis indicated that the isolated cDNA was 1264-bp in length containing a complete ORF of 1230-bp. It encoded a precursor peptide of 409 amino acids with a signal peptide of 19 amino acids. The structural analysis indicated that goat BMP4 contains typical TGF-ß propeptide and TGF-ß domains. In skin tissue, BMP4 is generally transcribed in an ascendant pattern from anagen to telogen. The methylation level of 5' flanking regulatory region of BMP4 gene might be involved in its mRNA expression in skin tissue: a higher BMP4 methylation level in skin coincides with a lower expression of BMP4 mRNA. These results from the present work provided a foundation for further insight into the functional and regulatory characteristics of BMP4 in the development and cycle of hair follicle in Liaoning Cashmere goat.

PURPOSE: Folic acid supplementation has been suggested to reduce the risk of preterm birth. However, results from previous epidemiologic studies have been inconclusive. We investigated the hypothesis that folic acid supplementation and dietary folate intake during pre- and post-conception reduces the risk of preterm birth. METHODS: We analyzed data from a birth cohort study conducted between 2010 and 2012 in Lanzhou, China, including 10,179 pregnant women with live singleton births. RESULTS: Compared to non-users, folic acid supplement users with >12-week duration had a reduced risk of preterm birth (OR 0.67, 95 % CI 0.55-0.83) with a significant dose-response relationship (P for trend = 0.01). A similar pattern was observed for spontaneous preterm birth. Stronger associations were seen for ever use of folic acid supplement and very preterm birth (OR 0.50, 95 % CI 0.36-0.69) and spontaneous very preterm birth (OR 0.42, 95 % CI 0.29-0.63). Dietary folate intake during preconception and pregnancy were also associated with reduced risk of preterm birth (OR 0.68, 95 % CI 0.56-0.83, OR 0.57, 95 % CI 0.47-0.70 for the highest quartiles, respectively), particularly for spontaneous very preterm (OR 0.41, 95 % CI 0.24-0.72, OR 0.26, 95 % CI 0.15-0.47 for the highest quartiles, respectively). There were also decreased risks of preterm birth observed per 10-µg increase in dietary folate intake, and similar associations were found after stratification by folic acid supplementation status. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that folic acid supplementation and higher dietary folate intake during preconception and pregnancy reduces the risk of preterm birth, and the protective effect varies by preterm subtypes.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to determine the prognostic significance of pelvic lymph node (PLN) characteristics and perform risk stratification in patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced cervical squamous cell carcinoma. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 609 patients with Federation Internationale de Gynecologie et d'Obstetrique (FIGO) stage II to IVa who underwent concurrent chemoradiotherapy, compared overall survival (OS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and pelvic recurrence-free survival between patients with or without PLN involvement. We further analyzed prognostic factors for OS and DMFS including FIGO stage, tumor volume, and lymph node (LN) characteristics in 300 patients with PLN involvement. RESULTS: The 3-year OS rate was 81.7% versus 92.8% (P = 0.002) and the 3-year DMFS rate was 79.3% versus 92.7% (P = 0.006) in patients with or without PLN involvement, respectively. With univariable analysis, FIGO stage, LN-volume, LN-number, LN-diameter, and matted/necrotic LN affected both OS and DMFS. Based on multivariable analysis, we created a risk stratification model. For OS, the independent risk factors were FIGO stage III or IVa, LN-volume of 3 cm or more, LN-diameter of 1.5 cm or more, and matted/necrotic LN. The low-risk group (no risk factors), mid-risk group (1 or 2 risk factors), and high-risk group (3 or 4 risk factors) had a 3-year OS of 96.6%, 84.9%, and 64.7%, respectively (P = 0.005). For DMFS, LN-diameter of 1.5 cm or more, LN-number of 3 or more, and matted/necrotic LN were the independent risk factors. The subgroups for DMFS were the low-risk group (no risk factors), the mid-risk group (1 risk factor), and the high-risk group (2 or 3 risk factors), and the 3-year DMFS was 92.4%, 76.2%, and 64.6%, respectively (P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The prognosis was significantly poorer for patients with high-risk lymph node characteristics. Using this risk stratification, we should select the most appropriate and individualized treatment modality to improve outcomes in those patients with a poorer prognosis.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small noncoding RNA molecules that negatively regulate gene expression. Herein, we investigated a selective number of miRNAs for their expression in skin tissue of Liaoning Cashmere goat during hair follicle cycles, and their intracellular regulatory networks were constructed based on bioinformatics analysis. The relative expression of six miRNAs (mir-103-3p, -15b-5p, 17-5p, -200b, -25-3p, and -30c-5p) at anagen phase is significantly higher than that at catagen and/or telogen phases. In comparison to anagen, the relative expression of seven miRNAs (mir-148a-3p, -199a-3p, -199a-5p, -24-3p, -30a-5p, -30e-5p, and -29a-3p) was revealed to be significantly up-regulated at catagen and/or telogen stages. The network analyses of miRNAs indicated those miRNAs investigated might be directly or indirectly involved in several signaling pathways through their target genes. These results provided a foundation for further insight into the roles of these miRNAs in skin tissue of Liaoning Cashmere goat during hair follicle cycles.

BACKGROUND: Early studies have suggested that biomass cooking fuels were associated with increased risk of low birth weight (LBW). However it is unclear if this reduced birth weight was due to prematurity or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). METHODS: In order to understand the relationship between various cooking fuels and risk of LBW and small for gestational age (SGA), we analyzed data from a birth cohort study conducted in Lanzhou, China which included 9,895 singleton live births. RESULTS: Compared to mothers using gas as cooking fuel, significant reductions in birth weight were observed for mothers using coal (weight difference = 73.31 g, 95 % CI: 26.86, 119.77) and biomass (weight difference = 87.84 g, 95 % CI: 10.76, 164.46). Using biomass as cooking fuel was associated with more than two-fold increased risk of LBW (OR = 2.51, 95 % CI: 1.26, 5.01), and the risk was mainly seen among preterm births (OR = 3.43, 95 % CI: 1.21, 9.74). No significant associations with LBW were observed among mothers using coal or electromagnetic stoves for cooking. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that exposure to biomass during pregnancy is associated with risk of LBW, and the effect of biomass on LBW may be primarily due to prematurity rather than IUGR.

Studies investigating the relationship between maternal passive smoking and the risk of preterm birth have reached inconsistent conclusions. A birth cohort study that included 10,095 nonsmoking women who delivered a singleton live birth was carried out in Lanzhou, China, between 2010 and 2012. Exposure to passive smoking during pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of very preterm birth (<32 completed weeks of gestation; odds ratio = 1.98, 95% confidence interval: 1.41, 2.76) but not moderate preterm birth (32-36 completed weeks of gestation; odds ratio = 0.98, 95% confidence interval: 0.81, 1.19). Risk of very preterm birth increased with the duration of exposure (P for trend = 0.0014). There was no variability in exposures by trimester. The associations were consistent for both medically indicated and spontaneous preterm births. Overall, our findings support a positive association between passive smoking and the risk of very preterm birth.

Various studies have investigated the presence of microplastics (MPs) in food and their potential hazardous impact on human health. The frequency of human exposure to MPs, particularly through the consumption of manufactured food and drinking water, is increasing. However, data regarding MP contamination in brine and brined cabbage used for the production of kimchi are limited. Here, we quantified MPs in brine process water during the production of brined cabbage. Pretreatment of the brine process water by performing a filtration step resulted in an MP-removal efficiency of 98.7-100%; 3671 ± 174 MP particles were observed in brining process water that was not filtered. A glass filter, STS filter, and Si Filter showed significant MP-removal efficiency, decreasing the number of MP particles in brining process water to 2,361, 2,775, and 3,490, respectively (p < 0.05). Our results provide data on how filtering of brine can effectively safeguard kimchi from MP contamination and e can be produced. However, to overcome the limitations of our laboratory-scale study, additional technologies should be used in the future for large-scale filtration processes.
