RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: Our findings highlight a valuable breeding resource, demonstrating the potential to concurrently enhance grain shape, thermotolerance, and alkaline tolerance by manipulating Gγ protein in rice. Temperate Geng/Japonica (GJ) rice yields have improved significantly, bolstering global food security. However, GJ rice breeding faces challenges, including enhancing grain quality, ensuring stable yields at warmer temperatures, and utilizing alkaline land. In this study, we employed CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing technology to knock out the GS3 locus in seven elite GJ varieties with superior yield performance. Yield component measurements revealed that GS3 knockout mutants consistently enhanced grain length and reduced plant height in diverse genetic backgrounds. The impact of GS3 on the grain number per panicle and setting rate depended on the genetic background. GS3 knockout did not affect milling quality and minimally altered protein and amylose content but notably influenced chalkiness-related traits. GS3 knockout indiscriminately improved heat and alkali stress tolerance in the GJ varieties studied. Transcriptome analysis indicated differential gene expression between the GS3 mutants and their wild-type counterparts, enriched in biological processes related to photosynthesis, photosystem II stabilization, and pathways associated with photosynthesis and cutin, suberine, and wax biosynthesis. Our findings highlight GS3 as a breeding resource for concurrently improving grain shape, thermotolerance, and alkaline tolerance through Gγ protein manipulation in rice.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) have a great potential to effectively transform teaching and learning. As more efforts have been put on designing and developing ITSs and integrating them within learning and instruction, mixed types of results about the effectiveness of ITS have been reported. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate how ITSs work in real and natural educational contexts and the associated challenges of ITS application and evaluation. Through a systematic literature review method, this study analyzed 40 qualified studies that applied social experiment methods to examine the effectiveness of ITS during 2011-2022. The obtained results highlighted a complicated landscape regarding the effectiveness of ITS in real educational contexts. Specifically, there was an "intelligent" regional gap regarding the distribution of countries where ITS studies using social experiment methods were conducted. Compared to learning performance, relatively less attention was paid to investigating the impact of ITS on non-cognitive factors, process-oriented factors, and social outcomes, calling for more research in this regard. Considering the complexities and challenges existing in real educational fields, there was a lack of scientific rigor in terms of experimental design and data analysis in some of the studies. Based on these findings, suggestions for future study and implications were proposed.

Invasive growth of glioblastoma makes residual tumor unremovable by surgery and leads to disease relapse. Temozolomide is widely used first-line chemotherapy drug to treat glioma patients, but development of temozolomide resistance is almost inevitable. Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of non-apoptotic cell death, is found to be related to temozolomide response of gliomas. However, whether inducing ferroptosis could affect invasive growth of glioblastoma cells and which ferroptosis-related regulators were involved in temozolomide resistance are still unclear. In this study, we treated glioblastoma cells with RSL3, a ferroptosis inducer, in vitro (cell lines) and in vivo (subcutaneous and orthotopic animal models). The treated glioblastoma cells with wild-type or mutant IDH1 were subjected to RNA sequencing for transcriptomic profiling. We then analyze data from our RNA sequencing and public TCGA glioma database to identify ferroptosis-related biomarkers for prediction of prognosis and temozolomide resistance in gliomas. Analysis of transcriptome data from RSL3-treated glioblastoma cells suggested that RSL3 could inhibit glioblastoma cell growth and suppress expression of genes involved in cell cycle. RSL3 effectively reduced mobility of glioblastoma cells through downregulation of critical genes involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Moreover, RSL3 in combination with temozolomide showed suppressive efficacy on glioblastoma cell growth, providing a promising therapeutic strategy for glioblastoma treatment. Although temozolomide attenuated invasion of glioblastoma cells with mutant IDH1 more than those with wild-type IDH1, the combination of RSL3 and temozolomide similarly impaired invasive ability of glioblastoma cells in spite of IDH1 status. Finally, we noticed that both ferritin heavy chain 1 and ferritin light chain predicted unfavorable prognosis of glioma patients and were significantly correlated with mRNA levels of methylguanine methyltransferase as well as temozolomide resistance. Altogether, our study provided rationale for combination of RSL3 with temozolomide to suppress glioblastoma cells and revealed ferritin heavy chain 1 and ferritin light chain as biomarkers to predict prognosis and temozolomide resistance of glioma patients.

Recent studies have reported that MLST8 is upregulated in many malignant tumors. Nevertheless, the underlying molecular mechanism is still unclear. The aim of this work was to investigate how MLST8 contributes to the development and progression of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). MLST8 is an oncogenic protein in the TCGA database and ccRCC clinical specimens. We also ascertain that MLST8 interacts with FBXW7, which was universally regarded as an E3 ubiquitin ligase. MLST8 can be degraded and ubiquitinated by tumor suppressor FBXW7. FBXW7 recognizes a consensus motif (T/S) PXX (S/T/D/E) of MLST8 and triggers MLST8 degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Strikingly, the activated cyclin dependent kinase 1 (CDK1) kinase engages in the MLST8 phosphorylation required for FBXW7-mediated degradation. In vitro, we further prove that MLST8 is an essential mediator of FBXW7 inactivation-induced tumor growth, migration, and invasion. Furthermore, the MLST8 and FBXW7 proteins are negatively correlated in human renal cancer specimens. Our findings suggest that MLST8 is a putative oncogene that functions via interaction with FBXW7, and inhibition MLST8 could be a potential future target in ccRCC treatment.

BACKGROUND: Success rate of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in aortic regurgitation (AR) patients is relatively low on account of the absence of calcified anchoring structures. Morphological classification and corresponding TAVR strategies for AR are lacking yet. METHODS: The AURORA study is a prospective, multicenter, single-arm cohort study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of transfemoral TAVR for severe AR in patients with high or prohibitive risk for surgery. Patients who are ≥ 65 years and diagnosed with severe pure AR as defined by the Echocardiographic Core Laboratory will be consecutively enrolled for further multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scanning and multiplanar analyses. Based on a new anatomical classification and dual anchoring theory, patients will be classified into 4 types according to the level of the anchoring area. Types 1, 2 and 3 (at least 2 anchoring areas) will undergo the TAVR procedure with a domestic Chinese self-expanding valve (VitaFlow Valve, MicroPort, Shanghai, China), whereas type 4 (0 or 1 anchoring area) patients will be considered unsuitable for TAVR and will receive medical treatment. Our goal is to recruit 100 patients to account for 10% missing data or loss of patients to follow-up. Procedural, 30-day, 6-month and 12-month outcomes will be assessed according to Valve Academic Research Consortium-3 criteria. DISCUSSION: The AURORA study will establish a new AR anatomical classification based on dual anchoring theory through MDCT multiplanar measurement and assess the safety and efficacy of TAVR guided by this new classification and strategy in AR patients. The spaceborne dispersive spectrometer is widely used in environmental, resource, and ocean observations. The coded spectrometer has higher energy advantages than the dispersion spectrometer, so it has great application prospects. In the current study, we developed an off-axis short-wave infrared coded optical system (SICOS) based on curved prism dispersion, and we further explored the design and optimization of the SICOS structure. Finite element analyses of a space-based short-wave infrared coded spectrometer based on curved prism dispersion (SSICS-CPD), including static simulation, modal analysis, sinusoidal vibration mechanical analysis, and random vibration mechanical analysis, were carried out. Simulation results showed that the SICOS support structure had excellent mechanical and thermal stability. As off-axis optical systems cannot meet the requirements of optical position accuracy through centering processing, a point source microscope and three-coordinate measuring machines were employed to complete the high-precision and rapid assembly of the SSICS-CPD. In addition, verification tests of surface shape error, stress relief, random vibration, and optical design parameters were carried out to validate the high stability and imaging performance of the SSICS-CPD. Results showed that the average modulation transfer function in the full field was 0.43 at 16.67 lp/mm, the spectral smile was <0.2 pixels, and the spectral keystone was <0.1 pixels. The design, analysis, assembly, and verification of the SSICS-CPD provide a useful reference for the development of other spaceborne prism dispersion spectrometers.

Derived from Curcuma plants, Curcumae Longae Rhizoma, Curcumae Rhizoma, Wenyujin Rhizoma Concisum, and Curcumae Radix are common blood-activating and stasis-resolving medicinals in clinical practice, which are mainly used to treat amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, chest impediment and heart pain, and rheumatic arthralgia caused by blood stasis block. According to modern research, the typical components in medicinals derived from Curcuma plants, like curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, curdione, germacrone, curcumol, and ß-elemene, have the activities of hemorheology improvement, anti-platelet aggregation, anti-thrombosis, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor, and anti-fibrosis, thereby activating blood and resolving stasis. However, due to the difference in origin, medicinal part, processing, and other aspects, the efficacy and clinical application are different. The efficacy-related substances behind the difference have not yet been systematically studied. Thus, focusing on the efficacy-related substances, this study reviewed the background, efficacy and clinical application, efficacy-related substances, and "prediction-identification-verification" research method of blood-activating and stasis-resolving medicinals derived from Curcuma plants, which is expected to lay a theoretical basis for the future research on the "similarities and differences" of such medicinals based on integrated evidence chain and to guide the scientific and rational application of them in clinical practice.

Since the current identification method for Paeoniae Radix Alba is complex in operation and long time-consuming with high requirements for technicians, the present study employed Heracles NEO ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose(E-nose) technology to identify raw and sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Radix Alba decoction pieces in order to establish a rapid identification method for sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Radix Alba. The odors of raw Paeoniae Radix Alba and its sulfur-fumigated products were analyzed by Heracles NEO ultra-fast gas phase E-nose to obtain the odor chromatographic information. The chemometric model was established, and the data were processed by principal component analysis(PCA), discriminant function analysis(DFA), soft independent modeling of class analogy(SIMCA), and partial least squares discriminant analysis(PLS-DA). The differential compounds of raw and sulfur-fumigated samples were qualitatively analyzed based on the Kovats retention index and Arochembase. As revealed by the comparison of gas chromatograms of raw and sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Radix Alba, the heights of several peaks in the chromatograms before and after sulfur fumigation changed significantly. The peak(No.8) produced by ethylbenzene disappeared completely due to sulfonation reaction in the process of sulfur fumigation, indicating that ethylbenzene may be the key component in the identification of Paeoniae Radix Alba and its sulfur-fumigated products. In PCA, DFA, SIMCA, and PLS-DA models, the two types of samples were separated into two different regions, indicating that the established models can clearly distinguish between raw and sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Radix Alba. The results showed that Heracles NEO ultra-fast gas phase E-nose technology could realize the rapid identification of raw and sulfur-fumigated Paeoniae Radix Alba, which provides a new method and idea for the rapid identification of sulfur-fumigated Chinese medicine.

Coronary heart disease(CHD) is a common cardiovascular disease in clinical practice. Curcumae Rhizoma(CR), an important herbal medicine for breaking blood stasis and resolving mass, is often used for the treatment of CHD caused by blood stasis syndrome. However, the anti-CHD components, targets, and mechanism are still unclear. Therefore, in this study, the chemical components of CR were separated and identified by ultra high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). Based on the identified components, network pharmacology analysis, including target prediction and functional enrichment, was applied to screen out the main active components against CHD, and the potential mechanism was discussed. Finally, molecular docking was performed to verify the binding between the active components and the targets. The results showed that among the 52 chemical components identified in CR, 28 were related to CHD, involving 75 core targets. The core components included(4S)-4-hydroxy-gweicurculactone, curcumadione, and curcumenone, and the core targets included phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase, catalytic subunit alpha(PIK3 CA), mitogen-activated protein kinase 1(MAPK1), and mitogen-activated protein kinase 3(MAPK3). In summary, through the active components, such as(4S)-4-hydroxy-gweicurculactone, curcumadione, and curcumenone, CR regulates the nerve repair, vasoconstriction, lipid metabolism, and inflammatory response, thereby exerts therapeutic effect on CHD.

This study aims to study the effective substance and mechanism of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen extract in the treatment of insomnia based on serum metabolomics and network pharmacology. The rat insomnia model induced by p-chlorophenylalanine(PCPA) was established. After oral administration of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen extract, the general morphological observation, pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep test, and histopathological evaluation were carried out. The potential biomarkers of the extract in the treatment of insomnia were screened by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(UHPLC-MS) combined with multivariate analysis, and the related metabolic pathways were further analyzed. The "component-target-pathway" network was constructed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Exactive mass spectrometry(UHPLC-Q-Exactive-MS/MS) combined with network pharmacology to explore the effective substances and mechanism of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen in the treatment of insomnia. The results of pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep test and histopathological evaluation(hematoxylin and eosin staining) showed that Ziziphi Spinosae Semen extract had good theraputic effect on insomnia. A total of 21 endogenous biomarkers of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen extract in the treatment of insomnia were screened out by serum metabolomics, and the metabolic pathways of phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, and nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism were obtained. A total of 34 chemical constituents were identified by UHPLC-Q-Exactive-MS/MS, including 24 flavonoids, 2 triterpenoid saponins, 4 alkaloids, 2 triterpenoid acids, and 2 fatty acids. The network pharmacological analysis showed that Ziziphi Spinosae Semen mainly acted on target proteins such as dopamine D2 receptor(DRD2), 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 1 A(HTR1 A), and alpha-2 A adrenergic receptor(ADRA2 A) in the treatment of insomnia. It was closely related to neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, serotonergic synapse, and calcium signaling pathway. Magnoflorine, N-nornuciferine, caaverine, oleic acid, palmitic acid, coclaurine, betulinic acid, and ceanothic acid in Ziziphi Spinosae Semen may be potential effective compounds in the treatment of insomnia. This study revealed that Ziziphi Spinosae Semen extract treated insomnia through multiple metabolic pathways and the overall correction of metabolic disorder profile in a multi-component, multi-target, and multi-channel manner. Briefly, this study lays a foundation for further research on the mechanism of Ziziphi Spinosae Semen in treating insomnia and provides support for the development of innovative Chinese drugs for the treatment of insomnia.

A real-time high dynamic range (HDR) imaging and display method based on correlated double sampling is proposed for short-wave infrared (SWIR) cameras in order to effectively improve its range of brightness and contrast, as well as to obtain more image details. The method utilizes the correlated double sampling technique of the SWIR detector to extend the 14-bit raw image into a 16-bit HDR image and achieve 4 times the HDR imaging. Subsequently, a dynamic range compression process, including logarithmic mapping and histogram equalization, is performed for the 16-bit HDR image to be mapped to an 8-bit display. Finally, the experimental results show that the method can enrich the details of SWIR images under the premise of ensuring real-time imaging.

In view of the functional requirements of high reliability and stability support of optical components of space remote sensors, a rigid-flexible, dual-mode coupling support structure for space-based rectangular curved prisms (SRCPs) was designed. In-depth studies of the support principle and engineering realization of the SRCPs and optimization of the flexible adhesive structure were performed. Static and dynamic simulations were conducted on the mirror subassembly by means of finite element analysis, and test verification was also performed. The tests revealed that the surface shape error of the mirror subassembly after mechanical testing was 0.021λ, the displacement of the mirror body was 0.008 mm, the inclination angle was ∼0.8'', the mass of the mirror subassembly was 4.79 kg, the fundamental frequency was 283 Hz, and the maximum amplification of the total rms acceleration was 4.37. All indexes were superior to those of the design requirements. On this basis, bonding tests and mechanical tests of a rectangular curved prism reflector, a rectangular curved prism, and a rectangular plane reflector employing this proposed support structure were continued. The test results verified the reliability, stability, and universal applicability of the proposed rigid-flexible, dual-mode peripheral bonding support structure.

L~*, a~* and b~* values of prepared slices of Curcumae Rhizoma were measured by spectrophotometer. SPSS 21.0 was used for discriminant analysis to establish the color range and mathematical prediction model of prepared slices of Curcumae Rhizoma. The values of L~*, a~* and b~* of kwangsiensis ranged from 58.09-62.40, 4.53-5.66 and 23.61-24.29, while the values of L~*, a~* and b~* of phaeocaulis were between 64.02-70.71,-0.89-4.13 and 44.59-54.52, respectively. The values of L~*, a~* and b~* of wenyujin were 68.55-70.99,-0.11-1.47 and 28.26-32.19, respectively. The mathematical prediction model was proved to be able to realize 100% identification of Curcumae Rhizome of different origins through original and cross validation and external samples validation. A dual wavelength HPLC was established; the contents of 9 sesquiterpenoids and 3 Curcumae Rhizomes were determined simultaneously; and the contents of Curcumae Rhizome of different origins were determined. The results showed that kwangsiensis had higher contents of neocurdione, ß-elemene and isocurcumaenol, phaeocaulis curcumin, furadienone, demethoxycurcumin and curcumin; and wenyujin mainly contained curdione, furadienes and guimarone. Pearson correlation analysis on L~*, a~*, b~* value and content of 12 components showed that curcumin, furadienone, demethoxycurcumin and curcumin had a significant positive correlation with b~* value(P<0.01). There was a significant negative correlation between neocurdione, ß-elemene and isocurcumaenol and L~* value(P<0.01). Curdione, furadienes and guimarone were significantly correlated with L~* value(P<0.01),indicating that the appearance co-lor of Curcumae Rhizoma could reflect the change of the content of the internal components. This study provided reference for the rapid recognition of Curcumae Rhizoma and the establishment of quality evaluation system.

In this paper, a real-time, dynamic three-dimensional (3D) shape reconstruction scheme based on the Fourier-transform profilometry (FTP) method is achieved with a short-wave infrared (SWIR) indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) camera for monitoring applications in low illumination environments. A SWIR 3D shape reconstruction system is built for generating and acquiring the SWIR two-dimensional (2D) fringe pattern of the target. The depth information of the target is reconstructed by employing an improved FTP method, which has the advantages of high reconstruction accuracy and speed. The maximum error in depth for static 3D shape reconstruction is 1.15 mm for a plastic model with a maximum depth of 36 mm. Meanwhile, a real-time 3D shape reconstruction with a frame rate of 25 Hz can be realized by this system, which has great application prospects in real-time dynamic 3D shape reconstruction, such as low illumination monitoring. In addition, for real-time dynamic 3D shape reconstruction, without considering the edge areas, the maximum error in depth among all frames is 1.42 mm for a hemisphere with a depth of 35 mm, and the maximum error of the average of all frames in depth is 0.52 mm.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronan (HA), a major component of the extracellular matrix, has been proven to play a crucial role in tumor progression. However, it remains unknown whether HA exerts any effects in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). METHODS: A total of 82 patients with MDS and 28 healthy donors were investigated in this study. We firstly examined the bone marrow (BM) serum levels of HA in MDS by radioimmunoassay. Then we determined HA production and hyaluronan synthase (HAS) gene expression in BM mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) and mononuclear cells derived from MDS patients. Finally, we investigated the effects of HA on osteogenic differentiation of MSC. RESULTS: The BM serum levels of HA was increased in higher-risk MDS patients compared to normal controls. Meanwhile, patients with high BM serum HA levels had significantly shorter median survival than those with low HA levels. Moreover, the HA levels secreted by MSC was elevated in MDS, especially in higher-risk MDS. In addition, HAS-2 mRNA expression was also up-regulated in higher-risk MDS-MSC. Furthermore, we found that MSC derived from MDS patients with high BM serum HA levels had better osteogenic differentiation potential. Moreover, MSC cultured in HA-coated surface presented enhanced osteogenic differentiation ability. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that elevated levels of BM serum HA are related to adverse clinical outcome in MDS. Better osteogenic differentiation of MSC induced by HA may be implicated in the pathogenesis of MDS.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate effects of antioxidant stress protein heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) of rat hepatocytes. METHODS: The BRL cells (rat hepatocyte cell line) were cultured. The hepatocytes were treated with LPS, LPS+HO-1 siRNA, HO-1 siRNA and PBS solution, respectively. The cell viability was measured by trypan blue exclusion test. The apoptosis cells were detected by the fluorescent dye Hoechst 33258. Expressions of GRP78, CHOP, caspase-12 and HO-1 were detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: LPS caused an increase of HO-1 protein expression of rat hepatocytes in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner, a up-regulation of GRP78, CHOP and caspase-12, a decrease in cell viability, and an increase in apoptosis rate of hepatocytes. Pretreatment of HO-1 siRNA inhibited the up-regulation of LPS-induced HO-1, however, aggravated ERS and cellular injury. CONCLUSION: HO-1 inhibites ERS-mediated cellular injury of rat hepatocytes induced by LPS.

Diclazuril has long been used as an effective benzeneacetonitrile anticoccidial for the control of Eimeria tenella that causes coccidiosis. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the anticoccidial effects of diclazuril remains elusive. In this study, a proteomic analysis of the effect of diclazuril on second-generation merozoites of E. tenella was performed. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), 13 target proteins were found to be significantly affected by diclazuril treatment, with 11 of these proteins being identified as annotated proteins from E. tenella or other Apicomplexa parasites. These proteins contribute to various functions, including metabolism, protein synthesis, and host cell invasion. Using RT-PCR, we identified the potential pattern of transcriptional regulation induced by diclazuril, and we suggest some promising targets for the intervention of E. tenella infection.

Collective emotions and actions represent foundational constructs in social psychology, significantly influencing societal dynamics and responses. Within this framework, the Self-Other Overlap (SOO) - wherein individuals perceive minimal distinction between their own and others' identities - has been identified as an impactful factor at the interpersonal level. However, the extrapolation of SOO's implications at the collective, group level remains an underexplored domain in contemporary research. In addressing this lacuna, the present research endeavors to elucidate the multifaceted implications of SOO on group emotions and actions, contextualized within societal challenges such as "food hygiene problems". Utilizing validated instruments including the Self-Other Overlap Scale, Group-Based Anger Scale, Collective Action Tendency Scale, and Group Efficacy Scale for Coping Situations, this study adopts a tripartite situational experiment, engaging a collective sample of 359 participants, systematically recruited via the Credamo smart research platform to ensure representativeness. Study 1 examined the potential influence of variable SOO degrees on Group-Based Anger (GA) and Collective Action Tendency (CAT). Study 2 further refined the exploration, discerning the differential impacts of SOO targets on GA and CAT. Conclusively, Study 3 sought to ascertain the potential moderating role of Group Efficacy (GE) within the SOO-GA-CAT relationship. The empirical findings yielded several salient insights: notably, an augmentation in SOO levels corresponded with an amplification of GA and CAT. Furthermore, a delineation in SOO targets, specifically from external to ingroup entities, manifested in a pronounced augmentation of GA and CAT. Intriguingly, while elevated SOO predisposed heightened CAT, the modulatory effect of GE on CAT manifested predominantly in lower SOO contexts. In summation, the present study underscores the pivotal role of SOO magnitude and orientation as determinants of GA and CAT. The nuanced interplay between SOO degree and GE, particularly vis-à-vis CAT, provides a fresh scholarly perspective, contributing to the enriched understanding of group dynamics and collective behavioral paradigms.

Accurate medical image segmentation is an essential part of the medical image analysis process that provides detailed quantitative metrics. In recent years, extensions of classical networks such as UNet have achieved state-of-the-art performance on medical image segmentation tasks. However, the high model complexity of these networks limits their applicability to devices with constrained computational resources. To alleviate this problem, we propose a shallow hierarchical Transformer for medical image segmentation, called SHFormer. By decreasing the number of transformer blocks utilized, the model complexity of SHFormer can be reduced to an acceptable level. To improve the learned attention while keeping the structure lightweight, we propose a spatial-channel connection module. This module separately learns attention in the spatial and channel dimensions of the feature while interconnecting them to produce more focused attention. To keep the decoder lightweight, the MLP-D module is proposed to progressively fuse multi-scale features in which channels are aligned using Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and spatial information is fused by convolutional blocks. We first validated the performance of SHFormer on the ISIC-2018 dataset. Compared to the latest network, SHFormer exhibits comparable performance with 15 times fewer parameters, 30 times lower computational complexity and 5 times higher inference efficiency. To test the generalizability of SHFormer, we introduced the polyp dataset for additional testing. SHFormer achieves comparable segmentation accuracy to the latest network while having lower computational overhead.

Infrared ship detection is of great significance due to its broad applicability in maritime surveillance, traffic safety and security. Multiple infrared sensors with different spectral sensitivity provide enhanced sensing capabilities, facilitating ship detection in complex environments. Nevertheless, current researches lack discussion and exploration of infrared imagers in different spectral ranges for marine objects detection. Furthermore, for unmanned marine vehicles (UMVs), e.g., unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned ship (USs), detection and perception are usually performed in embedded devices with limited memory and computation resource, which makes traditional convolutional neural network (CNN)-based detection methods struggle to leverage their advantages. Aimed at the task of sea surface object detection on USVs, this paper provides lightweight CNNs with high inference speed that can be deployed on embedded devices. It also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using different sensors in marine object detection, providing a reference for the perception and decision-making modules of USVs. The proposed method can detect ships in short-wave infrared (SWIR), long-wave infrared (LWIR) and fused images with high-performance and high-inference speed on an embedded device. Specifically, the backbone is built from bottleneck depth-separable convolution with residuals. Generating redundant feature maps by using cheap linear operation in neck and head networks. The learning and representation capacities of the network are promoted by introducing the channel and spatial attention, redesigning the sizes of anchor boxes. Comparative experiments are conducted on the infrared ship dataset that we have released which contains SWIR, LWIR and the fused images. The results indicate that the proposed method can achieve high accuracy but with fewer parameters, and the inference speed is nearly 60 frames per second (FPS) on an embedded device.
