RESUMEN

There has been an ongoing effort to overcome the limitations associated with the stability of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells by using different organic agents as additives to the perovskite formulations. The functionality of organic additives has been predominantly limited to exploiting hydrogen-bonding interactions, while the relevant atomic-level binding modes remain elusive. Herein, we introduce a bifunctional supramolecular modulator, 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene, which interacts with the surface of the triple-cation double-halide perovskite material via halogen bonding. We elucidate its binding mode using two-dimensional solid-state 19F NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with density functional theory calculations. As a result, we demonstrate a stability enhancement of the perovskite solar cells upon supramolecular modulation, without compromising the photovoltaic performances.

RESUMEN

Perovskites have proven to be a promising candidate for highly efficient solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and x-ray detectors, overcoming limitations of inorganic semiconductors. However, they are notoriously unstable. The main reason for this instability is the migration of mobile ions through the device during operation as they are mixed ionic-electronic conductors. Here, we show how measuring the capacitance in both the frequency and the time domain can be used to study ionic dynamics within perovskite-based devices, quantifying activation energy, diffusion coefficient, sign of charge, concentration, and the length of the ionic double layer in the vicinity of the interfaces. Measuring the transient of the capacitance furthermore allows for distinguishing between ionic and electronic effects.

RESUMEN

Singlet fission is one of the most promising routes to overcome the single-junction efficiency limit for solar cells. Singlet fission-enhanced silicon solar cells are the most desirable implementation, but transfer of triplet excitons, the product of singlet fission, into silicon solar cells has proved to be very challenging. Here, we report on an all optical measurement technique for the detection of triplet exciton quenching at semiconductor interfaces, a necessary requirement for triplet exciton or charge transfer. The method relies on the growth of individual, single-crystal islands of the singlet fission material on the silicon surface. The islands have different heights, and we correlate these heights to the quenching efficiency of triplet excitons. The quenching efficiency is measured by spatially resolved delayed fluorescence and compared to a diffusion-quenching model. Using silicon capped with a blocking thermal oxide and aromatic monolayers, we demonstrate that this technique can quickly screen different silicon surface treatments for triplet exciton quenching.

RESUMEN

Transition metal fluoride (TMF) conversion-type cathodes promise up to 4 times higher gravimetric energy densities compared to those of common intercalation-type cathodes. However, TMF cathodes demonstrate sluggish kinetics, poor efficiencies, and incompatibility with many liquid electrolytes. In this work, coevaporated heterostructured iron and lithium fluoride (Fe-LiF) cathodes are investigated in thin-film solid-state batteries with a LiPON electrolyte and a lithium metal anode. The cells were cycled 2000 times at a cycling rate of 6C. They show a gradual improvement in voltaic efficiency (37-53%) and specific capacity (146-216 mAh/g) during cycling. After 2000 cycles, the cathode capacity reaches 480 mAh/g at a cycling rate of C/3.6, close to its theoretical capacity of 498 mAh/g, at room temperature conditions. This capacity gain is correlated with an observed electrochemically activated nanorestructuring of the cathode, characterized by cycling-induced coarsening (from 2.8 to 4.2 nm) of the metallic iron phase and its accumulation near the current collector interface, as well as lithium fluoride phase accumulation near the LiPON interface.

RESUMEN

Ion migration has been reported to be one of the main reasons for hysteresis in the current-voltage (J-V) characteristics of perovskite solar cells. We investigate the interplay between ionic conduction and hysteresis types by studying Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Pb(I0.9Br0.1)3 triple-cation perovskite solar cells through a combination of impedance spectroscopy (IS) and sweep-rate-dependent J-V curves. By comparing polycrystalline devices to single-crystal MAPbI3 devices, we separate two defects, ß and γ, both originating from long-range ionic conduction in the bulk. Defect ß is associated with a dielectric relaxation, while the migration of γ is influenced by the perovskite/hole transport layer interface. These conduction types are the causes of different types of hysteresis in J-V curves. The accumulation of ionic defects at the transport layer is the dominant cause for observing tunnel-diode-like characteristics in the J-V curves. By comparing devices with interface modifications at the electron and hole transport layers, we discuss the species and polarity of involved defects.

RESUMEN

In the concept of anode-free lithium-ion batteries, cells are manufactured with a bare anode current collector where the lithium metal anode is electrochemically formed from the lithium-containing cathode during the first charge cycle. While this concept has many attractive aspects from a manufacturing and energy density standpoint, stable plating and stripping remain challenging. We have investigated gold, platinum, and amorphous carbon as seed layers placed between the copper current collector and the lithium phosphorus oxynitride thin-film solid electrolyte. These layers guide lithium nucleation and improve the plating and stripping dynamics. All seed layers facilitate reversible lithium plating and stripping even at high current densities up to 8 mA cm-2. Of particular note is the amorphous carbon seed layer, which allowed a significant reduction in plating potential from 300 mV to as low as 50 mV. These results underscore the critical role of seed layers in improving the efficiency of anode-free solid-state batteries and open the door to simplified manufacturing of anode-free battery designs.

RESUMEN

The technique of alloying FA+ with Cs+ is often used to promote structural stabilization of the desirable α-FAPbI3 phase in halide perovskite devices. However, the precise mechanisms by which these alloying approaches improve the optoelectronic quality and enhance the stability have remained elusive. In this study, we advance that understanding by investigating the effect of cationic alloying in CsxFA1-xPbI3 perovskite thin-films and solar-cell devices. Selected-area electron diffraction patterns combined with microwave conductivity measurements reveal that fine Cs+ tuning (Cs0.15FA0.85PbI3) leads to a minimization of stacking faults and an increase in the photoconductivity of the perovskite films. Ultra-sensitive external quantum efficiency, kelvin-probe force microscopy and photoluminescence quantum yield measurements demonstrate similar Urbach energy values, comparable surface potential fluctuations and marginal impact on radiative emission yields, respectively, irrespective of Cs content. Despite this, these nanoscopic defects appear to have a detrimental impact on inter-grains'/domains' carrier transport, as evidenced by conductive-atomic force microscopy and corroborated by drastically reduced solar cell performance. Importantly, encapsulated Cs0.15FA0.85PbI3 devices show robust operational stability retaining 85% of the initial steady-state power conversion efficiency for 1400 hours under continuous 1 sun illumination at 35 °C, in open-circuit conditions. Our findings provide nuance to the famous defect tolerance of halide perovskites while providing solid evidence about the detrimental impact of these subtle structural imperfections on the long-term operational stability.

RESUMEN

The power capability of Li-ion batteries has become increasingly limiting for the electrification of transport on land and in the air. The specific power of Li-ion batteries is restricted to a few thousand W kg-1 due to the required cathode thickness of a few tens of micrometers. We present a design of monolithically-stacked thin-film cells that has the potential to increase the power ten-fold. We demonstrate an experimental proof-of-concept consisting of two monolithically stacked thin-film cells. Each cell consists of a silicon anode, a solid-oxide electrolyte, and a lithium cobalt oxide cathode. The battery can be cycled for more than 300 cycles between 6 and 8 V. Using a thermo-electric model, we predict that stacked thin-film batteries can achieve specific energies >250 Wh kg-1 at C-rates above 60, resulting in a specific power of tens of kW kg-1 needed for high-end applications such as drones, robots, and electric vertical take-off and landing aircrafts.

RESUMEN

Nucleation and early growth of Li metal is critical to the performance of anode-free solid-state batteries. We report the use of amorphous carbon deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering as an intermediate layer between the Cu current collector and the Lipon solid electrolyte. The density, conductivity, and microstructure of the carbon interlayer are varied and their influence on the reversible formation and removal of the Li metal anode is investigated. It is shown that thin films of amorphous carbon act as seed layers, reducing the overpotential for Li plating and increasing the critical current density for Li plating and stripping from 2 up to 8 mA cm-2. It is further demonstrated that the ionic conductivity of the Li ions in the carbon interlayers determines their optimum thickness to be 100 nm or less, and that the initial Li loss due to interphase formation can be reduced to a few tens of nm by decreasing the density of the carbon films.

RESUMEN

Singlet fission is a carrier multiplication mechanism that could make silicon solar cells much more efficient. The singlet-fission process splits one high-energy spin-singlet exciton into two lower-energy spin-triplet excitons. We calculated the efficiency potential of three technologically relevant singlet-fission silicon solar cell implementations. We assume realistic but optimistic parameters for the singlet-fission material and investigate the effect of singlet energy and entropic gain. If the transfer of triplet excitons occurs via charge transfer, the maximum efficiency is 34.6% at a surprisingly small singlet energy of 1.85 eV. For the Dexter-type triplet energy transfer, the maximum efficiency is 32.9% at a singlet energy of 2.15 eV. For Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), the triplet excitons are first transferred into a quantum dot, from which they then undergo FRET into silicon. For this transfer mechanism, the maximum efficiency is 28.% at a singlet energy of 2.33 eV. We show that the efficiency gain from singlet fission is larger the more efficient the silicon base cell is, which stands in contrast to tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells.

RESUMEN

Patterning materials with different properties in a single film is a fundamental challenge and essential for the development of next-generation (opto)electronic functional components. This work introduces the concept of ion exchange lithography and demonstrates spatially controlled patterning of electrically insulating films and semiconductors with tunable optoelectronic properties. In ion exchange lithography, a reactive nanoparticle "canvas" is locally converted by printing ion exchange "inks." To demonstrate the proof of principle, a canvas of insulating nanoporous lead carbonate is spatioselectively converted into semiconducting lead halide perovskites by contact printing an ion exchange precursor ink of methylammonium and formamidinium halides. By selecting the composition of the ink, the photoluminescence wavelength of the perovskite semiconductors is tunable over the entire visible spectrum. A broad palette of conversion inks can be applied on the reactive film by printing with customizable stamp designs, spray-painting with stencils, and painting with a brush to inscribe well-defined patterns with tunable optoelectronic properties in the same canvas. Moreover, the optoelectronic properties of the converted canvas are exploited to fabricate a green light-emitting diode (LED), demonstrating the functionality potential of ion exchange lithography.

RESUMEN

Halide alloying in metal halide perovskites is a useful tool for optoelectronic applications requiring a specific bandgap. However, mixed-halide perovskites show ion migration in the perovskite layer, leading to phase segregation and reducing the long-term stability of the devices. Here, we study the ion migration process in methylammonium-based mixed-halide perovskites with varying ratios of bromide to iodide. We find that the mixed-halide perovskites show two separate halide migration processes, in contrast to pure-phase perovskites, which show only a unique halide migration component. Compared to pure-halide perovskites, these processes have lower activation energies, facilitating ion migration in mixed versus pure-phase perovskites, and have a higher density of mobile ions. Under illumination, we find that the concentration of mobile halide ions is further increased and notice the emergence of a migration process involving methylammonium cations. Quantifying the ion migration processes in mixed-halide perovskites shines light on the key parameters allowing the design of bandgap-tunable perovskite solar cells with long-term stability.

RESUMEN

Due to excellent electric conductivity and chemical inertness, Au can be used in new microdevices for energy applications, microelectronics, and biomedical solutions. However, the chemical analysis of Au-containing systems using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) can be difficult because of the negative ionization of Au, as most metals form positive ions, and therefore cannot be detected from the same analytical volume. In this work, we present the potential of fluorine gas coinjection for altering the polarity, from the negative to positive, of Au secondary ions generated under Ga+ beam bombardment. The importance of detecting Au+ ions and representing their spatial distribution in nanoscale was demonstrated using a novel solid electrolyte for Li-ion solid-state batteries, amorphous Li7La3Zr2O12 (aLLZO). This allowed for assessing the migration of mobile Li+ ions outside the aLLZO layer and alloying the Au layer with Li, which explained the presence of an internal electric field observed during the polarization measurements. Remarkably, during fluorine gas-assisted TOF-SIMS measurements, the trace amount of Au content (5 ppm) was detected in a Pt layer (unattainable under standard vacuum conditions). In conclusion, fluorine gas-assisted TOF-SIMS can help understanding operation mechanisms and potential degradation processes of microdevices and therefore help optimizing their functionality.

RESUMEN

Solar cells based on metal halide perovskites often show excellent efficiency but poor stability. This degradation of perovskite devices has been associated with the migration of mobile ions. MAPbBr3 perovskite materials are significantly more stable under ambient conditions than MAPbI3 perovskite materials. In this work, we use transient ion drift to quantify the key characteristics of ion migration in MAPbBr3 perovskite solar cells. We then proceed to compare them with those of MAPbI3 perovskite solar cells. We find that in MAPbBr3, bromide migration is the main process at play and that contrary to the case of MAPbI3, there is no evidence for methylammonium migration. Quantitatively, we find a reduced activation energy, a reduced diffusion coefficient, and a reduced concentration for halide ions in MAPbBr3 compared to MAPbI3. Understanding this difference in mobile ion migration is a crucial step in understanding the enhanced stability of MAPbBr3 versus MAPbI3.

RESUMEN

Hybrid inorganic/organic semiconductor heterojunctions are candidates to expand the scope of purely organic or inorganic junctions in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Comprehensive understanding of bulk and interface doping on the junction's electronic properties is therefore desirable. In this work, we elucidate the energy level alignment and its mechanisms at a prototypical hybrid pn-junction comprising ZnO (n-type) and p-doped N,N'-di(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (α-NPD) as semiconductors, using photoelectron spectroscopy. The level alignment can be quantitatively described by the interplay of contact-induced band and energy level bending in the inorganic and organic component away from the interface, and an interface dipole due to the push-back effect. By adjusting the dopant concentration in α-NPD, the position of the frontier energy levels of ZnO can be varied by over 0.5 eV and that of α-NPD by over 1 eV. The tunability of this pn-junction's energy levels evidences the substantial potential of the hybrid approach for enhancing device functionality.

RESUMEN

Singlet fission, an exciton multiplication process in organic semiconductors that converts one singlet exciton into two triplet excitons, is a promising way to reduce thermalization losses in conventional solar cells. One way to harvest triplet excitons is to transfer their energy into quantum dots, which then emit photons into an underlying solar cell. We simulate the performance potential of such a singlet fission photon multiplier combined with a silicon base cell and compare it to a silicon-based tandem solar cell. We calculate the influence of various loss mechanisms on the performance potential under real-world operation conditions using a variety of silicon base cells with different efficiencies. We find that the photon multiplier is more stable against changes in the solar spectrum than two-terminal tandem solar cells. We furthermore find that, as the efficiency of the silicon base cell increases, the efficiency of the photon multiplier increases at a rate higher than that of the tandem solar cell. For current record silicon solar cells, the photon multiplier has the potential to increase the efficiency by up to 4.2% absolute.

RESUMEN

Perovskite/Si tandem solar cells have the potential to considerably out-perform conventional solar cells. Under standard test conditions, perovskite/Si tandem solar cells already outperform the Si single junction. Under realistic conditions, however, as we show, tandem solar cells made from current record cells are hardly more efficient than the Si cell alone. We model the performance of realistic perovskite/Si tandem solar cells under real-world climate conditions, by incorporating parasitic cell resistances, nonradiative recombination, and optical losses into the detailed-balance limit. We show quantitatively that when optimizing these parameters in the perovskite top cell, perovskite/Si tandem solar cells could reach efficiencies above 38% under realistic conditions, even while leaving the Si cell untouched. Despite the rapid efficiency increase of perovskite solar cells, our results emphasize the need for further material development, careful device design, and light management strategies, all necessary for highly efficient perovskite/Si tandem solar cells.

RESUMEN

Thermo-responsive polymers undergo a reversible coil-to-globule transition in water after which the chains collapse and aggregate into bigger globules when passing to above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The hydrogen bonding with the amide groups in the side chains has to be contrasted with the hydration interaction of the hydrophobic main-chain hydrocarbons. In the present investigation we study molecular changes in the polymer poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) and in its monomer N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) in solution across the LCST transition. Employing Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy we probe changes in conformation and hydrogen bonding. We observe a nearly discontinuous shift of the peak frequencies and areas of vibrational bands across the LCST transition for PNIPAM whereas NIPAM exhibits a continuous linear change with temperature. This supports the crucial role of the polymer backbone with respect to hydration changes in the amide group in combination with cooperative interactions of bound water along the backbone chain.

RESUMEN

After 60 years of research, silicon solar cell efficiency saturated close to the theoretical limit, and radically new approaches are needed to further improve the efficiency. The use of tandem systems raises this theoretical power conversion efficiency limit from 34% to 45%. We present the advantageous spectral stability of using voltage-matched tandem solar cells with respect to their traditional series-connected counterparts and experimentally demonstrate how singlet fission can be used to produce simple voltage-matched tandems. Our singlet fission silicon-pentacene tandem solar cell shows efficient photocurrent addition. This allows the tandem system to benefit from carrier multiplication and to produce an external quantum efficiency exceeding 100% at the main absorption peak of pentacene.
