RESUMEN

Exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in intercellular communication, regulating gene expression in target cells, and hold significant promise as cancer biomarkers for early detection and screening. However, achieving precise and viable detection of exosomal miRNAs remains a challenge. This paper proposes an all-in-one detection strategy for breast cancer-derived exosomal miRNA-21 on a pen-based paper chip (PPC). The PPC is constructed using a modified automatic pen and lateral flow assay (LFA), which results in a cost-effective fabrication process. The user only needs to add the sample and trigger the top of the self-contained PPC after a period of time to complete the entire detection process. To enhance the sensitivity of exosomal miRNA testing, an enzyme-free catalyzed hairpin assembly (CHA) is further introduced, enabling highly sensitive detection of miRNA-21 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 25 fmol. Additionally, the detection of miRNAs in differentially-expressed cells and clinical samples has also been successfully achieved with high specificity. Overall, the proposed PPC provides an effective tool for detecting early cancer, monitoring diseases, and establishing point of care testing (POCT).

RESUMEN

This study employs a spatial autoregressive probit-log linear (SAP-Log) hurdle model to investigate the influencing factors on the probability of death and case fatality rate (CFR) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at the city level in China. The results demonstrate that the probability of death from COVID-19 and the CFR level are 2 different processes with different determinants. The number of confirmed cases and the number of doctors are closely associated with the death probability and CFR, and there exist differences in the CFR and its determinants between cities within Hubei Province and outside Hubei Province. The spatial probit model also presents positive spatial autocorrelation in death probabilities. It is worth noting that the medical resource sharing among cities and enjoyment of free medical treatment services of citizens makes China different from other countries. This study contributes to the growing literature on determinants of CFR with COVID-19 and has significant practical implications.

A series of N-alkyl pyridinium salts were synthesized and employed as metal-free catalyst for the selective oxidation of methyl aromatic hydrocarbon with molecular oxygen. The electronic effect of the substitutes was found to be an important factor for the catalytic performance. With the introduction of electron-donating substitute -N(CH3)2, the conversion of p-xylene and selectivity of p-toluic acid could be simultaneously increased. 1-Benzyl-4-N,N-dimethylaminopyridinium salt showed the highest catalytic activity, and 95% conversion with 84% of selectivity to p-toluic acid could be obtained for the selective oxidation of p-xylene. Several methyl aromatic hydrocarbons could all be efficiently oxidized with the reported catalyst at the absence of any metal species.
