RESUMEN

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease caused by enteroviruses. Coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6)-associated HFMD has recently emerged as a predominant disease worldwide. Here, we describe five HFMD cases caused by CV-A6 in Japan from 2019 to 2022. All clinical courses were not severe and were self-limited, and the skin exanthema with vesicles differed from that in classical HFMD. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the major epidemic strain cluster of CV-A6 was formed independently in 2011, and our latest CV-A6 strains in Japan were detected within this cluster. The five cases described in this report indicate the recent shift in the predominant and continuous disease manifestation of CV-A6-associated HFMD.

RESUMEN

Two novel asymmetrical squaraines based on the indoline unit, ASQ-5-F and ASQ-5-DF, with one and two fluorine substituents, have been developed to investigate the effect of fluorine substituted on small-molecule bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells (OSCs). In comparison with non-fluorine-substituted ASQ-5, both fluorine-substituted ASQ-5-F and ASQ-5-DF possess analogous absorption band gaps but 0.05 and 0.10 eV lowered highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, respectively. Single-crystal analysis exhibits that ASQ-5-DF shows more desirable intermolecular packing patterns for the hole-carrier collection than ASQ-5 does; hence, higher hole mobility could be acquired. Therefore, solution-processed small-molecule BHJ OSCs fabricated with ASQ-5-F/PC71BM and ASQ-5-DF/PC71BM blends exhibit extremely higher power conversion efficiency (PCE; 5.0% and 6.0%, respectively) than that of ASQ-5/PC71BM (4.5%). The much improved PCE could be attributed to the simultaneously enhanced Voc, Jsc, and FF relative to those of the ASQ-5-based device. To our knowledge, this is the highest PCE (6.0%) among squaraine-based solution-processed BHJ OSCs and the highest PCE in OSCs based on the fluorinated donor segment of small molecules.

RESUMEN

Cutaneous tuberculosis is an infrequent form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, but is a symptom that can lead to diagnosis of tuberculosis. We describe a case of lupus vulgaris in a 79-year-old woman who had a 50-year history of a slowly growing plaque on her right cheek. She visited many hospitals without resolution and the plaque gradually enlarged. Recently, she was misdiagnosed with eczema and prescribed topical steroids that had no effect, and she subsequently visited our outpatient clinic. A diagnosis of lupus vulgaris was made based on histopathology, culture and polymerase chain reaction, and isoniazid, rifampicin and ethambutol were administered as antituberculosis treatment. Although the incidence of cutaneous tuberculosis has decreased significantly in developed countries, knowledge and awareness of the disease are still of importance for proper diagnosis and treatment.

RESUMEN

Recently, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare proposed that cervical cancer screening should be conducted for women aged 20 to 29 years old in Japan. However, there are insufficient data available in Japan concerning the screening conducted for women under the age of 30. Therefore, we made a survey of the results of cervical cytologic examination for pregnant women. 28,616 pregnant women were examined as subjects of a study group. A group of 108,289 women, subjected to group screening for cervical cancer in Miyagi Prefecture, were studied as a control group. The rate of subjects who required close examination in the pregnant women's group was significantly higher than that in the mass screening group (1.12% vs. 0.84%). The rate of close examination was significantly higher in the women 19 years old or younger compared to those in the age group of 25 to 39 years old. The rate was also significantly higher in women aged 20 to 24 years old than those who are 25 to 34 years old. Of the 321 subjects who required close examination, 34 cases underwent treatment, and 17 cases were under age 30. Moreover, all three cases of microinvasive and/or invasive carcinoma were under the age of 30 years (23, 23, 27 years old, respectively). Our results suggest that screening for cervical cancer in pregnancy is a useful means to find cervical neoplasia in young women and is effective in reducing the cervical cancer morbidity rate.
