RESUMEN

This paper explores the potential for communication-efficient federated learning (FL) in modern distributed systems. FL is an emerging distributed machine learning technique that allows for the distributed training of a single machine learning model across multiple geographically distributed clients. This paper surveys the various approaches to communication-efficient FL, including model updates, compression techniques, resource management for the edge and cloud, and client selection. We also review the various optimization techniques associated with communication-efficient FL, such as compression schemes and structured updates. Finally, we highlight the current research challenges and discuss the potential future directions for communication-efficient FL.

A high-definition (HD) map provides structural information for map-based self-localization, enabling stable estimation in real environments. In urban areas, there are many obstacles, such as buses, that occlude sensor observations, resulting in self-localization errors. However, most of the existing HD map-based self-localization evaluations do not consider sudden significant errors due to obstacles. Instead, they evaluate this in terms of average error over estimated trajectories in an environment with few occlusions. This study evaluated the effects of self-localization estimation on occlusion with synthetically generated obstacles in a real environment. Various patterns of synthetic occlusion enabled the analyses of the effects of self-localization error from various angles. Our experiments showed various characteristics that locations susceptible to obstacles have. For example, we found that occlusion in intersections tends to increase self-localization errors. In addition, we analyzed the geometrical structures of a surrounding environment in high-level error cases and low-level error cases with occlusions. As a result, we suggested the concept that the real environment should have to achieve robust self-localization under occlusion conditions.

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of the increasing number of ageing people in the world is arguably the most significant economic, health and social challenge that we face today. Additionally, one of the major epidemiologic trends of current times is the increase in chronic and degenerative diseases. This paper tries to deliver a more up to date overview of chronic diseases and other limitations associated with old age and provide a more detailed outlook on the research that has gone into this field. METHODS: First, challenges for seniors, including chronic diseases and other limitations associated with old age, are specified. Second, a review of seniors' needs and concerns is performed. Finally, solutions that can improve seniors' quality of life are discussed. Publications obtained from the following databases are used in this scoping review: Web of Science, PubMed, and Science Direct. Four independent reviewers screened the identified records and selected relevant publications published from 2010 to 2017. A total of 1916 publications were selected. In all, 52 papers were selected based on abstract content. For further processing, 21 full papers were screened." RESULTS: The results indicate disabilities as a major problem associated with seniors' activities of daily living dependence. We founded seven categories of different conditions - psychological problems, difficulties in mobility, poor cognitive function, falls and incidents, wounds and injuries, undernutrition, and communication problems. In order to minimize ageing consequences, some areas require more attention, such as education and training; technological tools; government support and welfare systems; early diagnosis of undernutrition, cognitive impairment, and other diseases; communication solutions; mobility solutions; and social contributions. CONCLUSIONS: This scoping review supports the view on chronic diseases in old age as a complex issue. To prevent the consequences of chronic diseases and other limitations associated with old age related problems demands multicomponent interventions. Early recognition of problems leading to disability and activities of daily living (ADL) dependence should be one of essential components of such interventions.

The medical devices, biotechnology, and healthcare industries are closely tied to innovation, with companies relying on research and development and new product introduction. However, innovation activities like research and development can be costly, and commercializing new products faces complexities. Having effective business models (BMs) aligned with such innovation activities is crucial. This study delves into the intricacies of BMs in these innovator companies, emphasizing the pivotal role of effective BMs in navigating uncertainties and fostering innovation. This study conducted a systematic literature review to synthesize knowledge on BMs in innovator health-tech companies and compare models on dimensions like infrastructure, offering, customers, and finances. The review of 34 recent papers revealed 9 key BMs - open innovation, sustainable, dynamic, dual, spin-off, frugal, high-tech entrepreneurial content marketing, back-end, and product-service systems BMs. The analysis found open innovation, sustainability, and dynamicity as foundational models that can serve as a basis when combined with others. The paper unveils a tailored Dynamic Sustainable Business Model (DSBM) for Health-Tech, designed to integrate adaptability and sustainability, providing a framework for companies to leverage emerging technologies effectively. Additionally, a conceptual framework outlining 28 groups of uncertainty factors in BMs was developed to aid risk management in health-tech. The findings offer crucial insights for companies in health-tech industries, aiding them in managing innovation and value creation amidst a rapidly evolving landscape.
