RESUMEN

Pneumocephalus is the pathologic collection of air in the intracranial cavity. In sufficient volumes, it can contribute to symptoms ranging from headaches to death. For conservative treatment, oxygen use is commonplace. Although this is an accepted tenet of clinical practice, it is not necessarily founded on robust trials. An electronic search of databases EMBASE and MEDLINE and the Cochrane Library was undertaken as per the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Three articles were included. Although the modes of oxygen delivery were heterogenous (non-rebreather versus endotracheal versus hyperbaric chamber), all studies concluded favorably on the use of oxygen therapy for increased reabsorption of pneumocephalus.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Grapefruit is an economically important fruit worldwide, but our knowledge of its seed biology is rather poor. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to develop techniques for banking and cryopreservation of grapefruit seeds. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Grapefruit seeds with the exotesta removed were used. Seeds were desiccated to three moisture levels between 5-9 % and stored at 15 degree C, 4 degree C and -20 degree C for up to 24, months to investigate seed lifespan in conventional seed bank. Meanwhile seeds desiccated by silica gel or saturated salt solution and embryonic axes by flash drying were employed to develop cryopreservation protocols. RESULTS: It was confirmed that grapefruit seeds have some intermediate properties, being able to withstand removal of type II water up to 7 % MC, but sensitive to -20 degree C storage. For cryopreservation, the excised embryonic axes had a wider moisture window between 5 % and 15%, with a maximum past-thaw emergence of 95 %, while seeds survived only with a maximum past-thaw emergence of 50 % or 70 % from a much narrow moisture window. CONCLUSION: In contrast to previous reports on another type II seed, coffee, we found that citrus seeds desiccated by silica gel had better post-thaw viability than those subjected to equilibrium desiccation with saturated salt solutions. Further investigation is required to elucidate the mechanisms that contribute to variable cryopreservation tolerance.

RESUMEN

mST3GalV synthesizes ganglioside GM3, the precursor for simple and complex a- and b- series gangliosides, and the expression and regulation of mST3GalV (CMP-NeuAc: lactosylceramide alpha2,3-sialyltransferase) activity is central to the production of almost all gangliosides, a class of glycosphingolipids implicated in variety of cellular processes such as transmembrane signaling, synaptic transmission, specialized membrane domain formation and cell-cell interactions. To understand the developmental expression of mST3GalV in mice, we investigated the spatial and temporal expression of mST3GalV mRNA during the mouse embryogenesis [embryonic (E) days; E9, E11, E13, E15] by in situ hybridization with digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes. All tissues from E9 and E11 were positive for mST3GalV mRNA. On E13, mST3GalV mRNA was expressed in various neural and non-neural tissues. In contrast to these, on E15, the telencephalon and liver produced a strong expression of mST3Gal V which was a quite similar to that of E13. In this stage, mST3GalV mRNA was also expressed in some non-neural tissues. These data indicate that mST3GalV is differently expressed at developmental stages of embryo, and this may be importantly related with regulation of organogenesis in mice.

RESUMEN

Sialic acids are key determinants for biological processes, such as cell-cell interaction and differentiation. Sialyltransferases contribute to the diversity in carbohydrate structure through their attachment of sialic acid in various terminal positions on glycolipid and glycoprotein (N-linked and O-linked) carbohydrate groups. Galbeta 1,3(4)GlcNAc alpha2,3-sialyltransferase (ST3Gal III) is involved in the biosynthesis of sLe(x)and sLe(a) known as selectin ligands and tumor-associated carbohydrate structures. The appearance and differential distribution of ST3Gal III mRNA during mice embryogenesis [embryonic (E) days; E9, E11, E13, E15] were investigated by in situ hybridization with digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes coupled with alkaline phosphatase detection. On E9, all tissues were positive for ST3Gal III mRNA expression, whereas ST3Gal III mRNA on E11 was not detected throughout all tissues. On E13, ST3Gal III mRNA was expressed in different manner in various tissues. In this stage, ST3Gal III mRNA was positive only in the liver, pancreas and bladder. On E15, specific signal for ST3Gal III was detected in the liver, lung and forebrain. These results indicate that ST3GAI III is differently expressed at developmental stages of mice embryo, and this may be importantly related with regulation of organogenesis in mice.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the significance of EBP50 (ezrin-radixin-moesin binding phosphoprotein 50) expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining were performed to detect EBP50 expression in pairs of ESCCs and matched non-tumor tissues, and the relationships between EBP50 expression and other clinical factors in ESCC were analyzed. An iRNA targeting EBP50 was transfected into EC9706 cells. MTT and plate colony assays were performed to assess the effects of EBP50 down-regulation on cell growth, and flow cytometry was used to evaluate the influence of inhibiting EBP50 on cell cycle progression. RESULTS: The real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), western blotting, and immunohistochemical staining results showed that EBP50 expression was significantly lower in ESCCs compared to matched non-tumor tissues. In addition, decreased EBP50 expression correlated with differentiation, T stage, lymph node (LN) metastasis, and poor prognosis in patients with ESCC. The down-regulation of EBP50 may significantly promote the growth and proliferation of EC9706 cells while accelerating cell cycle progression from the G1to S phase. CONCLUSIONS: EBP50 expression was decreased in ESCC, indicating that EBP50 might play a significant role in the malignant progression of ESCC and be a prognostic marker for patients with ESCC.
