RESUMEN

Regarding curtailing carbon emissions in wastewater treatment, the high-rate contact stabilization (HiCS) process outperforms others in removing dissolved organic matter (DOM) but struggles with poor settling performance. To boost operation performance and clarify the correlation between process parameters, DOM variations, effluent quality, and microbial metabolism within the HiCS system, the impacts of sludge properties on sludge settlement and organic matter (OM) capture efficiency were explored, and soluble fluorescent components in the DOM and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were identified and scrutinized. Results unveil that the feast/famine (F/F) regime in the HiCS process predominantly governs sludge activation in the stabilization phase, influencing sludge properties such as morphology characteristics, biological activity, and EPS secretion. At the same hydraulic retention time, reducing the sludge retention time (SRT) led to looser and smaller activated sludge flocs, increased microbial activity, and higher EPS production, particularly protein content in loosely bound EPS (LB-PN), which adversely impacted settling performance. High-throughput sequencing revealed that richness and diversity of the microbial community decreased with SRT. Acidobacteriota and Patescibacteria, associated with nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, significantly decreased. EPS-producing Firmicutes increased, enhancing EPS secretion, while filamentous Chloroflexi decreased, aligning with a reduced organic mineralization rate. Settlement and biological activity emerged as key factors affecting OM recovery, peaking at 43.97% with a 4-day SRT. The ratio of the sum of tryptophan-like and tyrosine-like components to fulvic-like components ((C1+C2)/C3) was proposed as a fluorescence indicator, serving as a hub to connect operational parameters, F/F regime, sludge status and process performance. When this ratio falls within the range of 1.04-1.36 during the stabilization phase, HiCS sludge achieves optimal status for OM capture with low aeration energy consumption.

RESUMEN

Electro-Fenton (EF) technology has shown great potential in environmental remediation. However, developing efficient heterogeneous EF catalysts and understanding the relevant reaction mechanisms for pollutant degradation remain challenging. We propose a new system that combines aluminum-air battery electrocoagulation (EC) with EF. The system utilizes dual electron reduction of O2 to generate H2O2 in situ on the air cathodes of aluminum-air batteries and the formation of primary cells to produce electricity. Tetracycline (TC) is degraded by ·OH produced by the Fenton reaction. Under optimal conditions, the system exhibits excellent TC degradation efficiency and higher H2O2 production. The TC removal rate by the reaction system using a graphite cathode reached nearly 100% within 4 h, whereas the H2O2 yield reached 127.07 mg/L within 24 h. The experimental results show that the novel EF and EC composite system of aluminum-air batteries, through the electroflocculation mechanism and ·OH and EF reactions, with EC as the main factor, generates multiple •OH radicals that interact to efficiently remove TC. This work provides novel and important insights into EF technology, as well as new strategies for TC removal.

RESUMEN

Polyferric sulfate (PFS) and ferric chloride (FC) were compared for their efficiencies in capturing organic carbon and phosphorus, and their effects on the anaerobic fermentation process of sludge from a pilot-scale two-stage reactor were studied. Both PFS and FC promoted organic carbon and phosphorus capture. Further study revealed that PFS-based sludge with a dosage of 18 mg Fe/Lsewage showed a better volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production performance (202.97 ± 2.38 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/g volatile solids (VS)) than that of FC-based sludge (169.25 ± 1.56 mg COD/g VS). Besides, the high dosage of PFS effectively promoted the activities of the α-glucosidase and proteases. The dissimilatory iron reduction process enhanced sludge flocs disintegration and the conversion of carbohydrates and proteins to VFAs. Non-hydroxyapatite phosphorus predominated in the total phosphorus of all samples. This study contributes to developing strategies for optimizing iron-based sludge management and high-value product recovery.

RESUMEN

A total of 493 fecal samples collected from local Shanghai pig farms were examined for Hepatitis E virus (HEV) after the introduction of stricter sanitary measures following outbreaks of a high fever-associated pig disease during 2006 and 2007. Our investigation revealed that, while the overall occurrence of HEV RNA positives decreased by only 3.7%, the incidence of HEV genotype 4 increased from 9.8% to 20.6% whereas the incidence of HEV genotype 3 decreased from 16.2% to 1.6%. As well as demonstrating that HEV genotype 3 was more sensitive than genotype 4 to the stricter sanitation procedures, our data also suggested that a homeostasis mechanism, whereby the overall incidence of HEV is maintained at a specific population level, might exist in the porcine HEV reservoir. Furthermore, in one case, we encountered the coexistence of HEV genotypes 3 and 4 within the same sample, indicating the possibility of future HEV infections of increased severity and even the occurrence of a HEV pandemic due to genetic recombination and species evolution.

RESUMEN

IgG antibody response in chickens immunized with F4 fimbriae extracted from local enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strain was studied during a 98-day immunization period for comparing the efficacy of four adjuvants: Freund' adjuvant, Quil A (QA), propolis and extract from Cochinchina momordica seed (ECMS). For this purpose, chickens were immunized with F4 fimbriae alone or combined with one of the above adjuvants on days 1 and 21. IgG antibody levels in serum and egg yolk (by ELISA) were measured on days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 70, 84 and 98. The egg production of each group was also determined during days 1-7 and the following four weeks. The results showed that QA could enhance antibody titre, as good or almost as good as Freund's adjuvant, whereas the titres of ECMS and propolis groups were relatively lower, with the overall order: Freund's adjuvant>QA>ECMS>propolis both in serum and egg yolk. However, the significant decrease of egg production was merely observed in the Freund's adjuvant group. It is concluded that the four adjuvants tested can stimulate immune response to F4 fimbriae in chickens, with Freund's adjuvant giving the best results, followed by QA.
