RESUMEN

Hand hygiene among anesthesia personnel is important to prevent hospital-acquired infections in operating rooms; however, an efficient monitoring system remains elusive. In this study, we leverage a deep learning approach based on operating room videos to detect alcohol-based hand hygiene actions of anesthesia providers. Videos were collected over a period of four months from November, 2018 to February, 2019, at a single operating room. Additional data was simulated and added to it. The proposed algorithm utilized a two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural networks (CNNs), sequentially. First, multi-person of the anesthesia personnel appearing in the target OR video were detected per image frame using the pre-trained 2D CNNs. Following this, each image frame detection of multi-person was linked and transmitted to a 3D CNNs to classify hand hygiene action. Optical flow was calculated and utilized as an additional input modality. Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity were evaluated hand hygiene detection. Evaluations of the binary classification of hand-hygiene actions revealed an accuracy of 0.88, a sensitivity of 0.78, a specificity of 0.93, and an area under the operating curve (AUC) of 0.91. A 3D CNN-based algorithm was developed for the detection of hand hygiene action. The deep learning approach has the potential to be applied in practical clinical scenarios providing continuous surveillance in a cost-effective way.

Humoral factors that are secreted from skeletal muscles can regulate bone metabolism and contribute to muscle-bone relationships. Although extracellular vesicles (EVs) play important roles in physiological and pathophysiological processes, the roles of EVs that are secreted from skeletal muscles in bone repair have remained unclear. In the present study, we investigated the effects of the local administration of muscle cell-derived EVs on bone repair in control and streptozotocin-treated diabetic female mice. Muscle cell-derived EVs (Myo-EVs) were isolated from the conditioned medium from mouse muscle C2C12 cells by ultracentrifugation, after which Myo-EVs and gelatin hydrogel sheets were transplanted on femoral bone defect sites. The local administration of Myo-EVs significantly improved delayed bone repair that was induced by the diabetic state in mice 9 days after surgery. Moreover, this administration significantly enhanced the ratio of bone volume to tissue volume at the damaged sites 9 days after surgery in the control mice. Moreover, the local administration of Myo-EVs significantly blunted the number of Osterix-positive cells that were suppressed by the diabetic state at the damage sites after bone injury in mice. Additionally, Myo-EVs significantly blunted the mRNA levels of Osterix and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and ALP activity was suppressed by advanced glycation end product 3 in ST2 cells that were treated with bone morphogenetic protein-2. In conclusion, we have shown for the first time that the local administration of Myo-EVs improves delayed bone repair that is induced by the diabetic state through an enhancement of osteoblastic differentiation in female mice.

This study aimed to develop a novel culture method for rat adipose-derived stem cells (rADSC) and evaluate their osteogenic potential. The rADSC cultured in xeno-free culture medium (XF-rADSCs) or conventional culture medium containing fetal bovine serum (FBS-rADSCs) were combined with micropieces of xeno-free recombinant collagen peptide to form 3-dimensional aggregates (XF-rADSC-CellSaic or FBS-rADSC-CellSaic). Both FBS-rADSC and XF-ADSC in CellSaic exhibited multilineage differentiation potential. Compared to FBS-rADSC-CellSaic, XF-rADSC-CellSaic accelerated and promoted osteogenic differentiation in vitro. When transplanted into rat mandibular congenital bone defects, the osteogenically differentiated XF-rADSC-CellSaic induced regeneration of bone tissue with a highly maturated structure compared to FBS-rADSC-CellSaic. In conclusion, XF-rADSC-CellSaic is a feasible 3-dimensional platform for efficient bone formation.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is one of the most promising implant materials for hard tissues due to its similar elastic modulus; however, usage of PEEK is still limited owing to its biological inertness and low osteoconductivity. The objective of the study was to provide PEEK with the ability to sustain the release of growth factors and the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. The PEEK surface was sandblasted and modified with polydopamine (PDA). Moreover, successful sandblasting and PDA modification of the PEEK surface was confirmed through physicochemical characterization. The gelatin hydrogel was then chemically bound to the PEEK by adding a solution of glutaraldehyde and gelatin to the surface of the PDA-modified PEEK. The binding and degradation of the gelatin hydrogel with PEEK (GPEEK) were confirmed, and the GPEEK mineralization was observed in simulated body fluid. Sustained release of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 was observed in GPEEK. When cultured on GPEEK with BMP-2, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) exhibited osteogenic differentiation. We conclude that PEEK with a gelatin hydrogel incorporating BMP-2 is a promising substrate for bone tissue engineering.

All eukaryotic cells, including oocytes, utilize an engine called cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) to drive the cell cycle. Cdks are activated by a co-factor called cyclin, which regulates their activity. The key Cdk-cyclin complex that regulates the oocyte cell cycle is known as Cdk1-cyclin B1. Recent studies have elucidated the roles of other cyclins, such as B2, B3, A2, and O, in oocyte cell cycle regulation. This review aims to discuss the recently discovered roles of various cyclins in mouse oocyte cell cycle regulation in accordance with the sequential progression of the cell cycle. In addition, this review addresses the translation and degradation of cyclins to modulate the activity of Cdks. Overall, the literature indicates that each cyclin performs unique and redundant functions at various stages of the cell cycle, while their expression and degradation are tightly regulated. Taken together, this review provides new insights into the regulatory role and function of cyclins in oocyte cell cycle progression.

INTRODUCTION: Irisin is a proteolytic product of fibronectin type II domain-containing 5, which is related to the improvement in glucose metabolism. Numerous studies have suggested that irisin is a crucial myokine linking muscle to bone in physiological and pathophysiological states. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined the effects of local irisin administration with gelatin hydrogel sheets and intraperitoneal injection of irisin on the delayed femoral bone repair caused by streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in female mice. We analyzed the femurs of mice using quantitative computed tomography and histological analyses and then measured the mRNA levels in the damaged mouse tissues. RESULTS: Local irisin administration significantly blunted the delayed bone repair induced by STZ 10 days after a femoral bone defect was generated. Local irisin administration significantly blunted the number of Osterix-positive cells that were suppressed by STZ at the damaged site 4 days after a femoral bone defect was generated, although it did not affect the mRNA levels of chondrogenic and adipogenic genes 4 days after bone injury in the presence or absence of diabetes. On the other hand, intraperitoneal injection of irisin did not affect delayed bone repair induced by STZ 10 days after bone injury. Irisin significantly blunted the decrease in Osterix mRNA levels induced by advanced glycation end products or high-glucose conditions in ST2 cells in the presence of bone morphogenetic protein-2. CONCLUSIONS: We first showed that local irisin administration with gelatin hydrogel sheets improves the delayed bone repair induced by diabetic state partially by enhancing osteoblastic differentiation.

The diagnosis of the dynamics, accumulation, and engraftment of transplanted stem cells in vivo is essential for ensuring the safety and the maximum therapeutic effect of regenerative medicine. However, in vivo imaging technologies for detecting transplanted stem cells are not sufficient at present. We developed nanohybrid particles composed of dendron-baring lipids having two unsaturated bonds (DLU2) molecules, quantum dots (QDs), and magnetic nanoparticles in order to diagnose the dynamics, accumulation, and engraftment of transplanted stem cells, and then addressed the labeling and in vivo fluorescence and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of stem cells using the nanohybrid particles (DLU2-NPs). Five kinds of DLU2-NPs (DLU2-NPs-1-5) composed of different concentrations of DLU2 molecules, QDs525, QDs605, QDs705, and ATDM were prepared. Adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) were labeled with DLU2-NPs for 4 h incubation, no cytotoxicity or marked effect on the proliferation ability was observed in ASCs labeled with DLU2-NPs (640- or 320-fold diluted). ASCs labeled with DLU2-NPs (640-fold diluted) were transplanted subcutaneously onto the backs of mice, and the labeled ASCs could be imaged with good contrast using in vivo fluorescence and an MR imaging system. DLU2-NPs may be useful for in vivo multimodal imaging of transplanted stem cells.

Composite scaffolds obtained by the combination of biodegradable porous scaffolds and hydroxyapatite with bone regeneration potential are feasible materials for bone tissue engineering. However, most composite scaffolds have been fabricated by complicated procedures or under thermally harsh conditions. We have previously demonstrated that hydroxyapatite coating onto various substrates under a thermally mild condition was achieved by erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er: YAG) pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The purpose of this study was to prepare a polycaprolactone (PCL) porous scaffold coated with the hydroxyapatite by the Er: YAG-PLD method. Hydroxyapatite coating by the Er: YAG-PLD method was confirmed by morphology, crystallographic analysis, and surface chemical characterization studies. When cultured on PCL porous scaffold coated with hydroxyapatite, rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells adhered, spread, and proliferated well. The micro-CT and staining analyses after the implantation of scaffold into the critical-sized calvaria bone defect in rats indicate that PCL porous scaffold coated with hydroxyapatite demonstrates accelerated and widespread bone formation. In conclusion, PCL porous scaffold coated with hydroxyapatite obtained by the Er: YAG-PLD method is a promising material in bone tissue engineering.

The secretion of platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) into vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) induced by specific stimuli, such as oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, initially increases the proliferation and migration of VSMCs, and continuous stimulation leads to VSMC apoptosis, resulting in the formation of atheroma. Autophagy suppresses VSMC apoptosis, and statins can activate autophagy. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the mechanism of the autophagy-mediated vasoprotective activity of rosuvastatin, one of the most potent statins, in VSMCs continuously stimulated with PDGF-BB, a PDGF isoform, at a high concentration (100 ng/ml) to induce phenotypic switching of VSMC. Rosuvastatin inhibited apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner by reducing cleaved caspase-3 and interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß) levels and reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in PDGF-stimulated VSMCs. It also inhibited PDGF-induced p38 phosphorylation and increased the expression of microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) and the conversion of LC3-I to LC3-II in PDGF-stimulated VSMCs. The ability of rosuvastatin to inhibit apoptosis and p38 phosphorylation was suppressed by treatment with 3-methyladenine (an autophagy inhibitor) but promoted by rapamycin (an autophagy activator) treatment. SB203580, a p38 inhibitor, reduced the PDGF-induced increase in intracellular ROS levels and inhibited the formation of cleaved caspase-3, indicating the suppression of apoptosis. In carotid ligation model mice, rosuvastatin decreased the thickness and area of the intima and increased the area of the lumen. In conclusion, our observations suggest that rosuvastatin inhibits p38 phosphorylation through autophagy and subsequently reduces intracellular ROS levels, leading to its vasoprotective activity. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This study shows the mechanism responsible for the vasoprotective activity of rosuvastatin in vascular smooth muscle cells under prolonged platelet-derived growth factor stimulation. Rosuvastatin inhibits p38 activation through autophagy, thereby suppressing intracellular reactive oxygen species levels, leading to the inhibition of apoptosis and reductions in the intima thickness and area. Overall, these results suggest that rosuvastatin can be used as a novel treatment to manage chronic vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis.

Determining appropriate road drainage grate installation intervals requires an equation for estimating the flow intercepted by each grate inlet and its interception efficiency. In this study, 720 experiments were performed using a hydraulic model to estimate the flow intercepted by a grate inlet on a road. The flow calculation considered the number of lanes (2-4), longitudinal slope of the road (2-10%), transverse slope of the gutter (2-10%), and design capacity (up to 30 years of rainfall). The experimental results revealed that the flow intercepted by a grate inlet increased with increasing transverse slope of the gutter or the inlet length, thereby increasing its interception efficiency. Intercepted flow estimation equation was derived by regression analysis, and the derived equation was found to be more accurate than an existing empirical equation. The derived equation can thus be used to determine the installation of drainage grate inlets more effectively.

Acute myocardial infarction is a leading cause of death among single organ diseases. Despite successful reperfusion therapy, ischaemia reperfusion injury (IRI) can induce oxidative stress (OS), cardiomyocyte apoptosis, autophagy and release of inflammatory cytokines, resulting in increased infarct size. In IRI, mitochondrial dysfunction is a key factor, which involves the production of reactive oxygen species, activation of inflammatory signalling cascades or innate immune responses, and apoptosis. Therefore, intercellular mitochondrial transfer could be considered as a promising treatment strategy for ischaemic heart disease. However, low transfer efficiency is a challenge in clinical settings. We previously reported uptake of isolated exogenous mitochondria into cultured cells through co-incubation, mediated by macropinocytosis. Here, we report the use of transactivator of transcription dextran complexes (TAT-dextran) to enhance cellular uptake of exogenous mitochondria and improve the protective effect of mitochondrial replenishment in neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (NRCMs) against OS. TAT-dextran-modified mitochondria (TAT-Mito) showed a significantly higher level of cellular uptake. Mitochondrial transfer into NRCMs resulted in anti-apoptotic capability and prevented the suppression of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria after OS. Furthermore, TAT-Mito significantly reduced the apoptotic rates of cardiomyocytes after OS, compared to simple mitochondrial transfer. These results indicate the potential of mitochondrial replenishment therapy in OS-induced myocardial IRI.

BACKGROUND: Although mitral valve repair is recommended over replacement due to better outcomes, repair rates vary significantly among centers. This study examined the effect of institutional mitral valve repair volume on postoperative mortality.Methods and Results:All cases of adult mitral valve repair performed in Korea between 2009 and 2016 were analyzed. The association between case volume and 1-year mortality was analyzed after categorizing centers according to the number of mitral valve repairs performed as low-, medium-, or high-volume centers (<20, 20-40, and >40 cases/year, respectively). The effect of case volume on cumulative all-cause mortality was also assessed. In all, 6,041 mitral valve repairs were performed in 86 centers. The 1-year mortality in low-, medium-, and high-volume centers was 10.1%, 8.7%, and 4.7%, respectively. Low- and medium-volume centers had increased risk of 1-year mortality compared with high-volume centers, with odds ratios of 2.80 (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.15-3.64; P<0.001) and 2.66 (95% CI 1.94-3.64; P<0.001), respectively. The risk of cumulative all-cause mortality was also worse in low- and medium-volume centers, with hazard ratios of 1.96 (95% CI 1.68-2.29; P<0.001) and 1.77 (95% CI 1.47-2.12; P<0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Lower institutional case volume was associated with higher mortality after mitral valve repair. A minimum volume standard may be required for hospitals performing mitral valve repair to guarantee adequate outcome.

Although unruptured intracranial aneurysms are increasingly being diagnosed incidentally, perioperative rupture risk of unruptured intracranial aneurysm in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted an observational study to assess the prevalence and perioperative rupture risk of unruptured intracranial aneurysm in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Adult patients (n = 4864) who underwent cardiovascular surgery between January 2010 and December 2016 were included. We assessed the prevalence of unruptured intracranial aneurysms in these patients using preoperative neurovascular imaging. The incidence of postoperative 30-day subarachnoid haemorrhage from aneurysmal rupture was investigated in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery with unruptured intracranial aneurysm. Postoperative outcomes were compared between patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm and those without unruptured intracranial aneurysm. Of the 4864 patients (39.6% females; mean ± standard deviation age, 62.3 ± 11.3 years), 353 patients had unruptured intracranial aneurysms (prevalence rate, 7.26%; 95% confidence interval, 6.52-8.06%). Of these, eight patients received surgical or endovascular treatment before surgery and 345 patients underwent cardiovascular surgery with unruptured intracranial aneurysms. Within 30 days postoperatively, subarachnoid haemorrhage occurred only in one patient, and the cumulative postoperative 30-day subarachnoid haemorrhage incidence was 0.29% (95% confidence interval, 0.01% to 1.61%). The Kaplan-Meier estimated subarachnoid haemorrhage probabilities according to the unruptured intracranial aneurysm rupture risk scores were not higher than the previously reported risk in the general population. There were no significant differences in postoperative subarachnoid haemorrhage-free survival, haemorrhagic stroke-free survival, in-hospital mortality, and hospital length of stay between patients with unruptured intracranial aneurysm and those without unruptured intracranial aneurysm. In conclusion, the prevalence of unruptured intracranial aneurysm in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery is higher than in the general population. However, incidentally detected unruptured intracranial aneurysms are not linked to an increased risk of subarachnoid haemorrhage or adverse postoperative outcomes. These findings may help determine the optimal management of unruptured intracranial aneurysms before cardiovascular surgery.

This study presents an IoT-based construction worker physiological data monitoring platform using an off-the-shelf wearable smart band. The developed platform is designed for construction workers performing under high temperatures, and the platform is composed of two parts: an overall heat assessment (OHS) and a personal management system (PMS). OHS manages the breaktimes for groups of workers based using a thermal comfort index (TCI), as provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), while PMS assesses the individual health risk level based on fuzzy theory using data acquired from a commercially available smart band. The device contains three sensors (PPG, Acc, and skin temperature), two modules (LoRa and GPS), and a power supply, which are embedded into a microcontroller (MCU). Thus, approved personnel can monitor the status as well as the current position of a construction worker via a PC or smartphone, and can make necessary decisions remotely. The platform was tested in both indoor and outdoor environment for reliability, achieved less than 1% of error, and received satisfactory feedback from on-site users.

BACKGROUND: Although serum creatinine concentration has been traditionally used as an index of renal function in clinical practice, it is considered relatively inaccurate, especially in patients with mild renal dysfunction. This study investigated the usefulness of preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in predicting complications after cardiovascular surgery in patients with normal serum creatinine concentrations. METHODS: This study included 2208 adults undergoing elective cardiovascular surgery. Preoperative eGFR was calculated using Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equations. The relationships between preoperative eGFR and 90 day postoperative composite major complications were analyzed, including 90 day all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events, severe acute kidney injury, respiratory and gastrointestinal complications, wound infection, sepsis, and multi-organ failure. RESULTS: Of the 2208 included patients, 185 (8.4%) had preoperative eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 328 (14.9%) experienced postoperative major complications. Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that preoperatively decreased eGFR was independently associated with an increased risk of composite 90 day major postoperative complications (adjusted odds ratio: 1.232; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.148-1.322; P <  0.001). eGFR was a better discriminator of composite 90 day major postoperative complications than serum creatinine, with estimated c-statistics of 0.724 (95% CI: 0.694-0.754) for eGFR and 0.712 (95% CI: 0.680-0.744) for serum creatinine (P = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Decreased eGFR was significantly associated with an increased risk of major complications after cardiovascular surgery in patients with preoperatively normal serum creatinine concentrations.

BACKGROUND: To improve prognosis after esophageal surgery, intraoperative fluid optimization is important. Herein, we hypothesized that hydroxyethyl starch administration during esophagectomy reduce the total amount of fluid infused and it could have a positive effect on postoperative complication occurrence and mortality. METHODS: All consecutive adult patients who underwent elective esophageal surgery for cancer were studied. The primary outcome was the development of composite complications including death, cardio-cerebrovascular complications, respiratory complications, renal complications, gastrointestinal complications, sepsis, empyema or abscess, and multi-organ failure. The relationship between perioperative variables and composite complication was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Of 892 patients analyzed, composite complications developed in 271 (30.4%). The higher hydroxyethyl starch ratio in total fluid had a negative relationship with the total fluid infusion amount (r = - 0.256, P <  0.001). In multivariable analysis, intraoperatively administered total fluid per weight per hour (odds ratio, 1.248; 95% CI, 1.153-1.351; P <  0.001) and HES-to-crystalloid ratio (odds ratio, 2.125; 95% CI, 1.521-2.969; P <  0.001) were associated with increased risks of postoperative composite outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Although hydroxyethyl starch administration reduces the total fluid infusion amount during esophageal surgery for cancer, intravenous hydroxyethyl starch infusion is associated with an increasing risk of postoperative composite complications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic impacts of postoperative increases in serum amino transaminases on 1-year mortality in patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis. SETTING: A tertiary care university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1,950 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Aspartate amino transaminase and alanine amino transaminase ratios were calculated as the ratio between the peak aspartate amino transaminase and alanine amino transaminase within the first 5 post-operative days and their respective upper limit of normal values. A ratio of 2.0 was seen to be the minimum for which a difference in 1-year mortality could be detected in univariate analysis, when considering simultaneously both aspartate amino transaminase and alanine amino transaminase ratios. Multivariable analysis showed an association between an aspartate amino transaminase ratio > 2.0 and increased 1-year mortality (hazard ratio [HR] 2.68, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.42-5.05, P = 0.002), and also between both an aspartate amino transaminase and alanine amino transaminase ratio > 2.0 and increased 1-year mortality (HR 3.90, 95% CI 1.87-8.14, P < 0.001). However, increases in alanine amino transaminase only above the upper limit of normal were not associated with increased 1-year mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative increases in aspartate amino transaminase only and increases in both aspartate amino transaminase and alanine amino transaminase greater than twice the upper limit of normal were associated with increased 1-year mortality in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft.

Structure Health Monitoring is a topic of great interest in port structures due to the ageing of structures and the limitations of evaluating structures. This paper presents a cloud computing-based stability evaluation platform for a pier type port structure using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors in a system consisting of a FBG strain sensor, FBG displacement gauge, FBG angle meter, gateway, and cloud computing-based web server. The sensors were installed on core components of the structure and measurements were taken to evaluate the structures. The measurement values were transmitted to the web server via the gateway to analyze and visualize them. All data were analyzed and visualized in the web server to evaluate the structure based on the safety evaluation index (SEI). The stability evaluation platform for pier type port structures involves the efficient monitoring of the structures which can be carried out easily anytime and anywhere by converging new technologies such as cloud computing and FBG sensors. In addition, the platform has been successfully implemented at “Maryang Harbor” situated in Maryang-Meyon of Korea to test its durability.

BACKGROUND: The present study examined the changes in microbiological composition during the production process of crab marinated in soy sauce, potential microbial hazards, potential contamination routes and effective critical control points. Crab and soy sauce samples were obtained from six different manufacturing plants at different stages, and their microbiological content was comprehensively assessed by quantitative and qualitative analyses. RESULTS: The results revealed the following: (1) the final products contained 4.0 log colony-forming units (CFU) g-1 aerobic plate counts (APCs) and 1.1 log CFU g-1 coliforms, which may have been introduced from the raw materials (the level of APCs in raw crab and soy sauce mixed with other ingredients was 3.8 log CFU g-1 and 4.0 log CFU mL-1 respectively); (2) marination of crab in soy sauce may allow cross-contamination by coliforms; (3) only Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus were qualitatively detected in samples at different stages of manufacture (detection rate of 28 and 5.6% respectively), and these bacteria may impact the microbiological quality and safety of crab marinated in soy sauce; and (4) bacterial counts were either maintained or increased during the manufacturing process (suggesting that no particular step can be targeted to reduce bacterial counts). CONCLUSION: Proper management of raw materials and the marination process are effective critical control points, and alternative interventions may be needed to control bacterial quantity. The results provide important basic information about the production of crab marinated in soy sauce and may facilitate effective implementation of sanitary management practices in related industries and research fields. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

We previously have developed the photoresponsive tetra-gel and nanoparticles for controlling the function of the encapsulated substance by UV irradiation. However, the penetration ability of the UV is not high enough. Here, we developed a radiation-responsive tetra-gel and nanoparticle based on γ-ray-responsive X-shaped polyethylene glycol (PEG) linker with a disulfide bond. The nanoparticle could retain small molecules and biomacromolecules. γ-Rays were used as a trigger signal because of their higher penetrating ability. This allowed a spatiotemporal release and control of the encapsulated substances from the nanoparticle in the deeper region, which is impossible by using light exposure (ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared).
