RESUMEN

Three-dimensional (3D) printing1-9 has revolutionized manufacturing processes for electronics10-12, optics13-15, energy16,17, robotics18, bioengineering19-21 and sensing22. Downscaling 3D printing23 will enable applications that take advantage of the properties of micro- and nanostructures24,25. However, existing techniques for 3D nanoprinting of metals require a polymer-metal mixture, metallic salts or rheological inks, limiting the choice of material and the purity of the resulting structures. Aerosol lithography has previously been used to assemble arrays of high-purity 3D metal nanostructures on a prepatterned substrate26,27, but in limited geometries26-30. Here we introduce a technique for direct 3D printing of arrays of metal nanostructures with flexible geometry and feature sizes down to hundreds of nanometres, using various materials. The printing process occurs in a dry atmosphere, without the need for polymers or inks. Instead, ions and charged aerosol particles are directed onto a dielectric mask containing an array of holes that floats over a biased silicon substrate. The ions accumulate around each hole, generating electrostatic lenses that focus the charged aerosol particles into nanoscale jets. These jets are guided by converged electric-field lines that form under the hole-containing mask, which acts similarly to the nozzle of a conventional 3D printer, enabling 3D printing of aerosol particles onto the silicon substrate. By moving the substrate during printing, we successfully print various 3D structures, including helices, overhanging nanopillars, rings and letters. In addition, to demonstrate the potential applications of our technique, we printed an array of vertical split-ring resonator structures. In combination with other 3D-printing methods, we expect our 3D-nanoprinting technique to enable substantial advances in nanofabrication.

Mine wastes from tungsten mine which contain a high concentration of arsenic (As) may expose many environmental problems because As is very toxic. This study aimed to evaluate bioleaching efficiency of As and manganese (Mn) from tungsten mine wastes using the pure and mixed culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and A. thiooxidans. The electrochemical effect of the electrode through externally applied voltage on bacterial growth and bioleaching efficiency was also clarified. The obtained results indicated that both the highest As extraction efficiency (96.7%) and the highest Mn extraction efficiency (100%) were obtained in the mixed culture. A. ferrooxidans played a more important role than A. thiooxidans in the extraction of As whereas A. thiooxidans was more significant than A. ferrooxidans in the extraction of Mn. Unexpectedly, the external voltage applied to the bioleaching did not enhance metal extraction rate but inhibited bacterial growth, resulting in a reverse effect on bioleaching efficiency. This could be due to the low electrical tolerance of bioleaching bacteria. However, this study asserted that As and Mn could be successfully removed from tungsten mine waste by the normal bioleaching using the mixed culture of A. ferrooxidans and A. thiooxidans.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Advanced adenoma (> 10 mm in diameter, villous structure, or high-grade dysplasia) in young patients may have different characteristics and prognosis compared with those in older patients. We aimed to compare the incidence of colorectal neoplasms in young patients with older patients after removing high-risk adenoma (advance adenoma or ≥ 3 adenomas). METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter study was conducted at 13 university hospitals in Korea. The 1479 patients who removed high-risk adenoma at index colonoscopy and followed by surveillance colonoscopy ≥ 2.5 years after were included. The cumulative incidence of overall and advanced colorectal neoplasms was compared according to the age groups (group 1: < 50 years, group 2: 50-70 years, and group 3: ≥ 70 years). RESULTS: The prevalence of advance adenoma detected at index colonoscopy was significantly higher in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3 (85.4%, 78.1%, and 77.2%, respectively; P = 0.035). The 5 years cumulative incidence of overall and advanced colorectal neoplasms were 61.9%, 67.9%, and 74.7% (P < 0.001), and 11.7%, 17.9%, and 27.1% (P = 0.001) in groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. In multivariate analysis, age > 70 years was a significant risk factor for developing overall (hazard ratio [HR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.12-1.82, P = 0.004) and advanced colorectal neoplasms (HR = 2.56, 95% CI 1.43-4.59, P = 0.002). CONCLUSION: The cumulative incidence of overall and advanced colorectal neoplasms was significantly higher in older patients than in young patient groups. Age was a significant risk factor for developing colorectal neoplasms after removing high-risk adenoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent reports have indicated several instances of successful treatment of bowel perforation by using endoscopic band ligation (EBL) when treatment with endoclipping is unsuccessful, but this salvage method has not been investigated in any prospective model. Herein we aimed to compare the technical feasibility and efficacy of EBL and endoclip use in intraluminal closure of colon perforation, in an ex vivo model. METHODS: Standardized colonic perforations were created using fresh porcine colon and subsequently closed by full-thickness interrupted sutures, endoclip (QuickClip2(TM)), or EBL. Each closure site was tested with compressed air by using a digital pressure monitor for evaluating leak pressure. RESULTS: No significant differences were noted between the endoclip and EBL in leak pressures. Mean (± SD) pressures for air leakage from the perforations closed using the different devices were as follows: normal colon samples, 52.0 ± 13.2 mmHg; perforations closed with hand-sewn sutures, 32.3 ± 8.3 mmHg; perforations closed with endoclipping, 53.5 ± 22.7 mmHg; and perforations closed with EBL, 50.4 ± 12.5 mmHg. Time taken for closure by EBL was significantly less than that for closure by endoclipping (3.2 ± 1.7 min vs 6.8 ± 1.3 min, P < 0.01). Further, the number of devices used to achieve complete closure in the EBL group was lower than that with endoclipping (1.6 ± 0.5 vs 3.7 ± 0.8, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Endoluminal closure of a 1.5-cm colon perforation with EBL decreased procedure time and was not inferior in leak pressure compared with endoclipping in this ex vivo porcine model.

The significance of long-term teleconnections derived from the anomalous climatic conditions of El Niño has been a highly debated topic, where the remote response of coastal hydrodynamics and marine ecosystems to El Niño conditions is not completely understood. The 14-year long data from a ship-borne acoustic Doppler current profiler was used to examine the El Niño's impact, in particular, 2009 and 2015 El Niño events, on oceanic and biological processes in coastal regions across the Korea/Tsushima Strait. Here, it was revealed that the summer volume transport could be decreased by 8.7% (from 2.46 ± 0.39 to 2.24 ± 0.26 Sv) due to the anomalous northerly winds in the developing year of El Niño. Furthermore, the fall mean volume backscattering strength could be decreased by 1.8% (from - 97.09 ± 2.14 to - 98.84 ± 2.10 dB) due to the decreased surface solar radiation after the El Niño events. Overall, 2009 and 2015 El Niño events remotely affected volume transport and zooplankton abundance across the Korea/Tsushima Strait through climatic teleconnections.

RESUMEN

Adult intussusception represents 5% of all cases of intussusception and accounts for only 1-5% intestinal obstructions. Intussusception is a rare complication after gastric surgery with an incidence estimated at 0.1%. Early diagnosis of the acute onset intussusception is critical because mortality rates increase abruptly with delay in surgical treatment. We present here a case of jejunogastric intussusception diagnosed by gastroscopy in a patient with a history of distal gastrectomy due to early gastric cancer who had experienced hematemesis.
