RESUMEN

Nocardia is a genus of aerobic, Gram-positive bacteria known for their filamentous and branching morphology. N. brasiliensis is the most common species causing cutaneous nocardiosis. We present a 67-year-old woman who developed abscesseson the back of her right ankle after walking barefoot on soil. Cultures from the cutaneous lesions grew N. brasiliensis. Antibiotic therapy with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole given for a month provided near-complete resolution of her lesions.

Due to their distinct characteristics and possible uses in a variety of disciplines, nanoparticles have attracted a lot of attention recently. One area of interest is the synthesis of nanoparticles using natural sources such as bee pollen. The research aims to evaluate the usability of bee pollen extract-based magnesium nanoparticles (MgNPs). First, a palynological study was used to determine the plant source of bee pollen. The nanoparticle was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed cubic-shaped MgNPs with an average size range of 36-40 nm. Afterward, nanoparticles were evaluated for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, and neurotoxic properties. It was determined that the total antioxidant capacity, phenolic (TPC), flavonoid (TFC) content, DPPH radical scavenging, and antimicrobial activity of the nanoparticles were lower than pollen extract. At the same time, nanoparticles have less toxicity than bee pollen.

Most antibacterial applications in nanotechnology are carried out using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). However, there is a dearth of information on the biological effects of AgNPs on human blood cells. In this study, the cytotoxic and genotoxic potentials of ionic silver (Ag+), AgNP, silver bromide (AgBr), silver chloride (AgCl), and silver iodide (AgI) were evaluated through chromosome aberration (CA) test and cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) test in human cultured lymphocytes in vitro. Furthermore, the potential damages that can cause to DNA were evaluated through alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (Comet) assay on isolated lymphocytes. The results showed that AgNPs exerted cytotoxic effects by reducing the cytokinesis-block proliferation index and mitotic index at 24 and 48 h. AgNPs also increased micronucleus (MN) formation at both exposure times in the cultured cells. Meanwhile, AgCl had no genotoxic effects on the human lymphocyte cultured cells but had a cytotoxic effect at high doses. AgNP, Ag+, AgBr, and AgI caused substantial DNA damage by forming DNA strand breaks. They may also have clastogenic, genotoxic and cytotoxic effects on human lymphocyte cells. Based on the foregoing findings, silver nanomaterials may have genotoxic and cytotoxic potentials on human peripheral lymphocytes in vitro.

Phytoestrogens are xenoestrogens found in plants with a myriad of health benefits. However, various studies reported the genotoxic effects of these substances. Thus, we reviewed in vitro and in vivo studies published in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to evaluate the genotoxic and the genoprotective potential of phytoestrogens. Only studies written in English and intended to study commercially available phytoestrogens were included. The screening was performed manually. Moreover, the underlying mechanism of action of phytoestrogens was described. Around half of those studies (43%) reported genoprotective results. However, several studies revealed positive results for genotoxicity with specific model organisms and with dose/concentration dependence. The assessment of the selected articles showed substantial differences in the used concentrations and a biphasic response was recorded in some phytoestrogens. As far as we know, this is the first study to assess the genotoxic and genoprotective effects of phytoestrogens systematically.

The overconsumption of added sugars makes people vulnerable to a myriad of diseases. Several biochemical and developmental assays were performed in the current study to assess the effect of fructose on Drosophila melanogaster and to find substitutes for fructose by comparing it to well-known sweeteners. Drosophila was exposed separately to the same ratio of sugar 9.21% (w/v) of several types of sweeteners (sucrose, fructose, glucose syrup, high-fructose corn syrup and stevia). Results revealed that fructose might induce recombination, whereas stevia lacks genotoxic potential. No developmental delay, growth defects, or neurotoxic effects were recorded for any of the sweeteners. We also observed no striking differences in reactive oxygen species levels. Thus, stevia seems to be an alternative sweetener to fructose that can be consumed to reduce fructose-induced anomalies.

This study aimed to reveal the possible protective effect of dapagliflozin (DAPA) against acute kidney damage due to cyclosporine A (CsA). Thirty-two mice with an eight-week-old Balb\c albino strain were divided into four groups: control group, CsA group, DAPA group, and CsA + DAPA group. On day 9 of treatment, the animals were decapitated, and bilateral nephrectomy was performed. Oxidative stress and apoptosis were evaluated with caspase-3 activity, total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) in the right kidney resection material. The left kidney resection material was evaluated histopathologically. CsA increased caspase-3 activity, Bax, TOS, MDA, TAS, and MPO levels, and the administration of DAPA with CsA significantly reduced this increase in levels (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p < 0.001, respectively). CsA decreased Bcl-2 levels, and administration of CsA + DAPA significantly increased Bcl-2 levels compared with only CsA administration (p < 0.001). Additionally, administration of DAPA significantly reduced the histopathological findings (parenchymal inflammation, hyaline cast formation, vacuolization, and lysis of renal tubular cells) caused by CsA. DAPA reduces oxidative stress, apoptosis, and histopathological damage caused by CsA in renal tissue.

BACKGROUND: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome in nondiabetic adults. M-type phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R), thrombospondin type-1 domain-containing 7A (THSD7A) are known as target podocyte antigens in membranous nephropathy (MN). Antibodies against these podocyte antigens are used in the initiation of treatment and response monitoring. However, the relationship between renal podocyte antigens and treatment response is not clear yet. We evaluated the relationship between immunohistochemical PLA2R, THSD7A and IgG4 staining, clinical findings and treatment response in kidney biopsies. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with MN were included in this retrospective study. In the renal biopsy samples of the patients, PLA2R, THSD7A and IgG4 were stained immunohistochemically and evaluated by light microscopy. The clinical, laboratory and treatment results of the patients were obtained from the hospital records. RESULTS: The study included a total of 58 patients with MN and a mean follow-up period of 32.3 ± 19.7 months. In patients with primary MN; PLA2R, THSD7A and IgG4 were positive in 57.1% (n = 28), 12.2% (n = 6) and 69.4% (n = 34), respectively. Only PLA2R staining was distinctly higher in patients with primary MN than secondary MN (P = .025). Dual positivity (PLA2R + THSD7A) was detected in five (10.2%) of patients with primary MN. We did not determine any relationship between the PLA2R, THSD7A and IgG4 staining patterns and treatment response of the patients. CONCLUSION: It was found no correlation between PLA2R, THSD7A and IgG4 staining in kidney tissue and treatment response. Interestingly, dual positivity (PLA2R + THSD7A) was detected only in primary MN.

BACKGROUND: Primary glomerulonephritis (PGN) has a significant part in non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) in diabetes mellitus (DM) patients. In our study, we compared the clinical, demographic and laboratory features of patients with biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy (DN) and PGN with type 2 DM. METHODS: In our retrospective study, type 2 DM patients who underwent kidney biopsy between 2011 and 2019 were included. Demographic, clinical and laboratory characteristics of DN and PGN patients were compared. RESULTS: Seventy patients with a mean age of 55.7 ± 9.4 and 43 (61.4%) males were included. About 38 (54.3%) of the patients had DN and 32 (45.7%) had PGN. In the PGN, membranous GN (20, 62.5%) was most common. In DN patients, diabetes duration was longer; complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure were more frequent. At the time of renal biopsy, blood sugar, HbA1C, blood pressure, serum albumin and proteinuria values were similar in two groups. The pathological damage findings of kidney biopsy in DN patients were more severe. In the first year after kidney biopsy decrease in eGFR was higher in DN patients, whereas eGFR did not change in PGN patients. CONCLUSION: In a diabetic patient, fasting blood sugar, hbA1C, serum albumin and proteinuria did not differ in the differential diagnosis of DN and PGN, whereas complications of DM (retinopathy, neuropathy, hypertension, coronary artery disease) were more characteristic in differentiation. Detection of PGN in a diabetic patient is crucial for the success of the treatment, according to DN.

To investigate the frequency and risk factors of ED in haemodialysis patients (HDps) and kidney transplantation (KTx) recipients (KTxRs). HDps and KTxRs between the ages of 18-65 were compared in terms of ED. IEFF-15 (International Index of Erectile Function) score was used to evaluation of ED. Fifty-seven male HDps and 52 male KTxRs with a mean age of 45.6 ± 10.4 years were included in our study. DM, CAD, hyperlipidaemia, smoking and beta blocker use were higher HDps (p = 0.037, p < 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.001 and p = 0.031 respectively). There was no ED in five (8.8%) HDps and 27(51.9%) KTxRx. Severity of ED was significantly higher in HDps (p < 0.001). In multiple logistic regression analysis, KTx was found the most relevant associated factor with ED. KTxRs had decreased risk for ED (OR = 0.09, 95% CI 0.02-0.30, p < 0.001). ED is significantly more common in HDps than KTxRs. Known risk factors for ED, HT, DM, CAD, HL, smoking, obesity and beta-blocker use were not related to ED in the HDps and KTxRs, and the KTx was positively effective for ED in patients undergoing renal replacement therapy.

With the development of today's technology, the electromagnetic radiation spread by mobile phones and base stations is also rapidly increasing, and this causes serious concerns about the environment and human health. The Drosophila model organism is widely used in genetic toxicology studies because its genome is highly similar to the genes identified in human diseases. In this study, the genotoxic effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation were evaluated by the wing Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test (SMART) in Drosophila melanogaster at 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2100 MHz. The SMART method is based on the observation of genetic changes occurring in the trichomes of the Drosophila wings appearing as mutant clones under the microscope. Throughout the study, total clone parameters were evaluated by exposing the Drosophila larvae to electromagnetic fields for two, four, and six hours per day for two days. As a result of the study, it was observed that the number of mutant clones was statistically increased according to the negative control group in all applications except for the six-hour application at 1800 MHz.

Bingol is a famous region for honey in Turkey. The amount of phenolic substance is also considered important for the anticancer, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of honey. Anticancer activity of honey extract was determined as the most effective dose of 1 mg/mL using the WST1 anti-proliferation kit in the PC-3 cell line. Total phenol content were found between 476.09 ± 1.67 and 865.22 ± 3.57 mg GAE/100 g honey, total flavonoid content 41.67 ± 0.25 and 1249.74 ± 0.85 mg QE/100 g honey, total phenolic acid content 0.74 ± 0.21 and 58.35 ± 1.56 mg SA/100 g honey, ß-carotene 1.71 ± 0.06-3.61 ± 0.08 mg/kg honey, lycopene content 0.89 ± 0.03 and 3.41 ± 0.08 mg/kg honey, respectively. Percent removal of H2O2 was determined in the range of 69.79 ± 1.24 and 75.37 ± 1.72 at 10 mg/mL. DPPH percentage removal for 200 mg/mL was between 69.79 ± 1.24 and 75.37 ± 1.72. Phenolic compounds in honey extract were determined as gallic acid, caffeic acid, syringe acid, chlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, catechin, quercetin, chrysin using HPLC analysis. The honey extracts were tested on Gram(+) and Gram(-) bacteria and yeast and their antimicrobial effects were determined. As a result, phenolic honey extraction, performed from five loci from the region of interest, showed anticancer, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and can be used as a functional food additive to replace synthetic counterparts.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the ameliorative effect of melatonin (MEL) against induced genotoxicity by cobalt (II) chloride (CoCl2) and cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) (50 nm). Genotoxicity of CoCl2 and CoNPs were investigated using single cell gel electrophoresis (COMET) in Drosophila melanogaster hemocytes, which are blood cells of the Drosophila, and the somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART) was used to investigate mutant effects on the Drosophila wings. Three concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 mM) of CoNPs and CoCl2 were applied to demonstrate their genotoxic potential. Both CoNPs and CoCl2 have mutagenic potential for the three concentrations tested in the COMET assay; however, only the 10 mM concentration of the ionic form and two high concentrations (1 and 10 mM) of CoNPs induced genotoxicity in the Drosophila SMART assay. Three different concentrations of MEL (0.1, 0.5 and 2.5 mM) were used against cobalt at highest concentration (10 mM) of both CoCl2 and CoNPs in both the SMART and COMET assays. MEL ameliorated the genotoxicity induced by CoCl2 and CoNPs in vivo Drosophila COMET and SMART assays.

OBJECTIVE: An increased left atrial volume index (LAVI) is related to increased mortality in hemodialysis patients. In the present study, we evaluated the association between the LAVI and the P wave peak time (PWPT), a newly introduced electrocardiographic parameter, in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: The study population was made up of 79 hemodialysis patients with a mean age of 53 ± 18 years (55.7% were males). These patients were divided into a normal LAVI (≤28 mL/m2) group (n = 45) and an increased LAVI (>28 mL/m2) group (n = 34). The demographic, clinical, laboratory, echocardiographic, and electrocardiographic variables of the groups were compared. RESULTS: The P wave terminal force from lead V1, P wave dispersion and PWPTs obtained from leads V1 and D2 (PWPTD2) were significantly higher in the patients with increased LAVIs. In multivariable analysis, only the PWPTD2was an independent predictor of an increased LAVI (odds ratio = 1.117, 95% CI = 1.052-1.185, p < 0.001). The receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the best PWPTD2 cutoff value for predicting an increased LAVI was 60 ms, with a sensitivity of 76.5% and a specificity of 66.7% (area under the curve = 0.736, 95% CI = 0.625-0.829, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study showed that a prolonged PWPTD2 was independently associated with an increased LAVI in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, measuring the PWPTD2 duration on an electrocardiogram may help define high-risk hemodialysis patients with increased LAVIs.

The current study was designed to evaluate genotoxicity of different sizes of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and ionic iron using coelomocytes of the earthworms Eisenia hortensis. Earthworms were exposed to different series of IONPs and ionic iron concentrations to find the respective LC50 of the chosen chemicals. LC50 for < 50, <100 nm and the ionic iron of IONPs were 500, 200, 250 µg/mL respectively. Concentrations of LC50/2 (250, 100, 125 µg/mL for < 50, <100 nm and the ionic iron respectively) and LC50 for 48 h were used to perform the comet assay and micronucleus test. Statistically significant (p < 0.05) increase in DNA and chromosomal damage was observed for all sizes of IONPs and ionic iron. In the comet assay system, the greatest genotoxicity was observed in the treatments with < 100 nm IONPs, whereas the greatest numbers of micronuclei and binucleate cells were observed in the treatments with ionic iron. It was concluded that different types of nanoparticles (i.e. sizes, shapes) may have different genotoxic potencies in different assays with E. hortensis earthworms.

BACKGROUND: Different techniques have been reported for the exploration and repair of femoral artery (FA) in patients who undergo minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and endovascular aortic surgery. We used a modified approach alternative to the conventional technique (group CT) since May 2013, which specifies a shorter groin incision and diamond-shaped hemostatic purse sutures for arteriotomy closure without the requirement of cross-clamping (group PT [purse suture technique]) and evaluated early outcomes and the complication profiles of the 2 techniques for femoral access. METHODS: In our clinic, between May 2011 and December 2015, 503 FA cannulations were performed on 345 patients who underwent MICS (n = 109, mean age 64.1 ± 17.6 years, female/male ratio 71/38), endovascular abdominal aneurysm repair (n = 158, mean age 71.3 ± 10.2 years, female/male ratio 63/95), thoracal endovascular aneurysm repair (n = 50, mean age 65.0 ± 15.3 years, female/male ratio 15/35), and transaortic valve implantation (n = 28, mean age 80.8 ± 5.9 years, female/male ratio 13/15). A total of 295 FAs were exposed via mini incision and were repaired with the PT. We compared the duration of femoral closure (FC), wound infection, and vascular complications including bleeding hematoma, thromboembolic and ischemic events, pseudoaneurysm, seroma, surgical reintervention rates, delayed hospital stay for groin complications, and existence of postoperative local luminal narrowing (LLN) at the intervention site over 25% for both groups. RESULTS: FC time (CT 14.9 ± 3.16 min, PT 6.5 ± 1.12 min, P < 0.0001), bleeding hematoma frequency (CT 6.2%, PT 1.7%, P = 0.01), and prolonged hospital stay for groin complications (CT 14.9%, PT 3.4%, P < 0.0001) were significantly lower in the PT group. Rate of technical success (CT 80.3%, PT 87.4%, P = 0.03) and event-free patient (CT 66.1%, PT 77.5%, P = 0.03) were significantly better in the PT group. There were no differences between groups in terms of ischemic events, wound infection rates, development of pseudoaneurysm and seroma, surgical reintervention rates, and LLN of FA over 25% at 6-month duplex evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: The comparison of the 2 approaches revealed the advantages of the PT in terms of bleeding hematoma and shortening in FC time and the length of hospital stay. We suggest performing a smaller skin incision for FA access and utilizing purse sutures, which allows completing the procedure without cross-clamping, thus providing a favorable approach and excellent comfort for the surgeon.

Thioredoxin (Trx) is a redox active protein that regulates several physiological and biochemical functions, such as growth, apoptosis and cellular defense. The function of Trx itself is regulated by thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Studies performed in a variety of human primary tumors have shown that thioredoxin reductase 1 (TrxR1) is overexpressed in tumoral tissues compared with corresponding normal tissues. This study was designed to determine the expression of TrxR1 in astrocytoma tissues of different World Health Organization (WHO) grades (grade I-IV). The proliferative (Ki-67) and apoptotic indices of the specimens were also investigated for correlation analysis. Astrocytoma tissues were extracted from the histopathological specimens of 40 patients. These samples included seven histologically normal brain tissues that served as a control group and ten tumoral samples for each grade of astrocytoma (grade I-IV). The histologically normal brain tissues were obtained from the non-tumoral portions of the pathological specimens of grade I (2 cases), grade II (2 cases), grade III (2 cases) and grade IV (1 case) astrocytomas. TrxR1 expression was evaluated using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunostaining. The proliferative and apoptotic indices of the specimens were investigated by Ki-67 immunostaining and TUNEL assay, respectively. TrxR1 expression, as assessed by qRT-PCR, increased significantly with astrocytoma grade (p = 0.01). The immunostaining intensity of TrxR1 in grade IV astrocytomas was significantly greater than that in the control tissue and all other astrocytoma grades (p < 0.001). Similarly, immunostaining intensity of TrxR1 in the grade III astrocytomas was significantly greater than that in the control group and grade I astrocytomas (p < 0.001). All astrocytoma tissues showed more intense staining in ascending grades, but the differences between grade I and the control, grade II and the control, grades II and I, grades III and II were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Ki-67 index values increased significant in accordance with grade progression (p = 0.01). The apoptotic index values were not significantly different in any group (p > 0.05); however, the differences between grade IV and the control and between grades IV and I were statistically significant (p < 0.05). Expression of TrxR1, as assessed by both qRT-PCR and immunostaining, correlated highly with both the astrocytoma grade and Ki-67 index.

The in vitro genotoxic and the soft-agar anchorage independent cell transformation ability of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) and its microparticulated form has been evaluated in human embryonic kidney (HEK293) and in mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH/3T3) cells. Nano-TiO2 of two different sizes (21 and 50 nm) were used in this study. The comet assay, with and without the use of FPG enzyme, the micronucleus assay and the soft-agar colony assay were used. For both the comet assay and the frequency of micronuclei a statistically significant induction of DNA damage, was observed at the highest dose tested (1000 µg/mL). No oxidative DNA damage induction was observed when the comet assay was complemented with the use of FPG enzyme. Furthermore, long-term exposure to nano-TiO2 has also proved to induce cell-transformation promoting cell-anchorage independent growth in soft-agar. Results were similar for the two nano-TiO2 sizes. Negative results were obtained when the microparticulated form of TiO2 was tested, indicating the existence of important differences between the microparticulated and nanoparticulated forms. As a conclusion it should be indicated that the observed genotoxic/tranforming effects were only detected at the higher dose tested (1000 µg/mL) what play down the real risk of environmental exposures to this nanomaterial.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Different ART (antiretroviral therapy) options may affect the risk of osteopenia/osteoporosis in people living with HIV (PLWH) having increased life expectancy. Current guidelines recommend bone mineral density (BMD) measurement only in patients at risk. In our study, we investigated the prevalence of osteopenia/osteoporosis and associated risk factors in naive patients not receiving ART. METHODS: This study included 116 newly diagnosed, ART naive HIV-positive patients who were studied retrospectively. Vitamin D level, BMD measurement, CD4 and CD8 count, CD4/CD8 ratio, HIV RNA level, body mass index and other risk parameters of ART naive patients were included in our study. RESULTS: Of 116 patients, 103 were male and 13 female. 47.4% (osteoporosis in 4.3%, osteopenia in 43.1%) of patients had osteopenia/osteoporosis. The patients with osteopenia/osteoporosis had older age (39.2±11.0 vs 32.0±8.6, p=0.0001), lower vitamin D levels (16.0±5.0 vs 24.4±6.3, p=0.0001), lower BMI (body mass index) (23.0±4.0 vs 24.6±4.6 p<0.05), lower CD4 and CD8 counts (405.1±885.0 vs 467.3± 695.1; 849.9570.4 vs 1012.0±629.4 respectively, p<0.05). 41.8% had CD4 count ≤200/µL (vs 18.0%, p=0.005). No statistically significant differences were observed in terms of gender distribution, smoking, alcohol and drug use, comorbidities and, additional drug use and HIV RNA >100 000 copies/ml. In multivariate analysis, age and vitamin D level were significant and independent (p<0.05) risk factors with osteoporosis/osteopenia. CONCLUSION: Being over 40 years of age, CD4 count ≤200/µL, vitamin D level <20 ng/mL and low BMI are the most important risk factors for osteopenia/osteoporosis in ART naive patients. Among these parameters, age and vitamin D level were significant and independent risk factors. These factors may guide the determination of the need for dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) testing in ART naive patients and drug choices in the treatment plan.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Data on the role of central sensitization in hemodialyzed patients are scarce. The aim was to identify the impact of central sensitization on quality of life and elucidate the risk factors for the development of central sensitization in patients receiving hemodialysis. METHODS: Central sensitization, quality of life, psychological well-being, and sleep were assessed by the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI), abbreviated version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument (WHOQOL-BREF), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Jenkins Sleep Evaluation Scale (JSS), respectively. The effect of central sensitization on quality of life and the predictors of the development of central sensitization were assessed by regression analyses. RESULTS: The frequency of central sensitization was 48% in the study population (n = 100). Patients with central sensitization had significantly higher pain intensity, worse sleep quality, and more impaired psychological status (p < 0.05 for all). The CSI score negatively affected all quality of life domains on its own (p < 0.001 for all, adjusted R2 ranged from 0.17 to 0.47). Dialysis vintage (OR, 0.8; 95% CI, 0.7 to 1.0), pain (OR, 1.5; 95% CI, 1.1 to 2.0), JSS (OR, 1.3; 95% CI, 1.1 to 1.5), and HADS-total (OR, 1.1; 95% CI, 1.0 to 1.2) were determined as the independent risk factors for central sensitization (p < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSION: This study confirms that given the high frequency of central sensitization and its significant negative impact on quality of life, the presence of central sensitization should be investigated in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have useful properties, such as strong magnetism and compatibility with living organisms which is preferable for medical applications such as drug delivery and imaging. However, increasing use of these materials, especially in medicine, has raised concerns regarding potential risks to human health. In this study, IONPs were coated with silicon dioxide (SiO2), citric acid (CA), and polyethylenimine (PEI) to enhance their dispersion and biocompatibility. Both coated and uncoated IONPs were assessed for genotoxic effects on Drosophila melanogaster. Results showed that uncoated IONPs induced genotoxic effects, including mutations and recombinations, while the coated IONPs demonstrated reduced or negligible genotoxicity. Additionally, bioinformatic analyses highlighted potential implications of induced recombination in various cancer types, underscoring the importance of understanding nanoparticle-induced genomic instability. This study highlights the importance of nanoparticle coatings in reducing potential genotoxic effects and emphasizes the necessity for comprehensive toxicity assessments in nanomaterial research.
