BACKGROUND: Despite the publication of several meta-analyses regarding the efficacy of certain therapies in helping individuals with interstitial cystitis (IC) / bladder pain syndrome (BPS), these have not provided a comprehensive review of therapeutic strategies. The study aimed to determine the efficacy of various therapies for IC/BPS and identify potential moderating factors using randomized controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: We queried the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases to identify prospective RCTs using inclusion criteria: 1) patients diagnosed with IC, 2) interventions included relevant treatments, 3) comparisons were a specified control or placebo, 4) outcomes were mean differences for individual symptoms and structured questionnaires. The pairwise meta-analysis and network meta-analysis (NMA) were performed to compare the treatments used in IC/BPS. Hedges' g standardized mean differences (SMDs) were used for improvement in all outcomes using random-effects models. Efficacy outcomes included individual symptoms such as pain, frequency, urgency, and nocturia, as well as structured questionnaires measuring IC/BPS symptoms. RESULTS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted which identified 70 RCTs with 3,651 patients. The analysis revealed that certain treatments, such as instillation and intravesical injection, showed statistically significant improvements in pain and urgency compared to control or placebo groups in traditional pairwise meta-analysis. However, no specific treatment demonstrated significant improvement in all outcomes measured in the NMA. The results of moderator analyses to explore influential variables indicated that increasing age was associated with increased nocturia, while longer follow-up periods were associated with decreased frequency. CONCLUSION: This systematic review and meta-analysis provide insights into the efficacy of various treatments for IC. Current research suggests that a combination of therapies may have a positive clinical outcome for patients with IC, despite the fact that treatment for this condition is not straightforward. INTRODUCTION: To determine effects of adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) on survival outcomes compared to surgery alone without AC for upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients with variant histology (VH). METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies investigating AC for UTUC in Medline, Embase, the Cochrane library up to January 2023. Population, intervention, comparator, and outcome were UTUC patients with VH, radical nephroureterectomy with AC, radical nephroureterectomy only, and oncological survival, respectively. RESULTS: Four retrospective studies were included. Regarding overall survival (OS), the pooled hazard ratio was 0.61 (95% confidence interval: 0.42-0.87; p = 0.007) across two studies. Regarding cancer specific survival (CSS), the pooled hazard ratio was 0.46 (95% confidence interval: 0.25-0.84; p = 0.01) across three studies. All included studies had a high quality based on the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Certainty of evidence for OS was low. Certainty of evidence for CSS was moderate due to a strong association (hazard ratio < 0.5). Publication bias was not significant for any studies. CONCLUSION: In UTUC patients with VH, administration of AC after surgery might have better survival outcomes than surgery alone. Our study provides evidence for decision-making of clinicians who treat UTUC patients with VH.

A promising de novo approach for the treatment of Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) exploits cell-mediated enzyme prodrug therapy comprising cytosine deaminase (CD) and fluorouracil (5-FC). The aim of this study was to determine the potential of bacterial CD-overexpressing hTERT-immortalized human adipose stem cells (hTERT-ADSC.CD) to suppress CRPC. A lentiviral vector encoding a bacterial CD gene was used to transfect and to generate the hTERT-ADSC.CD line. The ability of the cells to migrate selectively towards malignant cells was investigated in vitro. PC3 and hTERT-ADSC.CD cells were co-cultured. hTERT-ADSC.CD and 1 × 106 PC3 cells were administered to nude mice via intracardiac and subcutaneous injections, respectively, and 5-FC was given for 14 days. hTERT-ADSC.CD were successfully engineered. Enhanced in vitro hTERT-ADSC.CD cytotoxicity and suicide effect were evident following administration of 5 µM 5-FC. hTERT-ADSC.CD, together with 5-FC, augmented the numbers of PC3 cells undergoing apoptosis. In comparison to controls administered hTERT-ADSC.CD monotherapy, hTERT-ADSC.CD in combination with 5-FC demonstrated a greater suppressive effect on tumor. In CPRC-bearing mice, tumor suppression was enhanced by the combination of CD-overexpressing ADSC and the prodrug 5-FC. Stem cells exhibiting CD gene expression are a potential novel approach to treatment for CRPC.

The purpose of this study was to determine the ratio of sagittal length to coronal length of the distal tibia for predicting the sagittal length of the distal tibia. A total of 202 ankles were measured based on CT imaging availability. We measured the coronal length (Width, W) parallel to the Chaput tubercle from CT scans. Sagittal length was divided into 3 points (Diameter D1, D2, D3) in the axial plane on the same level. The relationship between coronal length and each sagittal length was determined through correlation analysis. A prediction model was then developed using multiple regression. We also analyzed the quality of the prediction model and validated the prediction model with a validation cohort. Each sagittal length (D1, D2, D3) and coronal length had a significant positive correlation (p < .01). In the prediction model, sex, height, and W were significantly associated with D1, D2, and D3 (p < .05). Prediction models were made for each sagittal length (D1, D2, D3). Concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) values of prediction models for D1, D2, and D3 were 0.78, 0.72, and 0.72 for the derivation cohort and 0.69, 0.63, and 0.61 for the validation cohort, respectively. Accuracies of models as ± 2SD for D1, D2, and D3 were 93.9%, 94.9%, and 94.9%, respectively. This study predicted the sagittal length of the distal tibia for preoperative planning by measuring the coronal length of the distal tibia. Prediction of the sagittal length of the distal tibia can help foot and ankle surgeons fixate screws stably to prevent iatrogenic injury of posterior structures of the distal tibia.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of age, sex, and type of COVID-19 vaccine on urological complications after vaccination with COVID-19. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) data from December 2020 to August 2022 to analyze urological symptoms post-vaccination adverse events (AEs) associated with COVID-19 vaccines authorized for the U.S. POPULATION: We collected AEs after 1-2 dose vaccination in VAERS, but not those after an additional booster shot. Age was divided into three groups (< 18 years, 18-64 years, and > 64 years), and compared incidence of AEs after vaccination with either mRNA vaccine (mRNA-1273, Moderna; and BNT162b2, Pfizer-BioNTech) or a viral vector vaccine (JNJ-78436735, Janssen/Johnson and Johnson) as reported in VAERS data. RESULTS: Cumulative incidence rates (CIRs) of LUTS, voiding symptom, storage symptom, infection, and hematuria were 0.057, 0.282, 0.223, 1.245, and 0.214, respectively. By gender, CIRs OF LUTS, storage symptom, and infection were statistically significantly higher in women, whereas CIRs of voiding symptom and hematuria were statistically significantly higher in men. CIRs of AEs per 100,000 in age groups of < 18 years, 18-64 years, and > 64 years were 0.353, 1.403, and 4.067, respectively. All AE types except for voiding symptom displayed the highest CIRs in the Moderna vaccine group. CONCLUSIONS: Based on an updated analysis of available data, the prevalence of urologic complications following administration of COVID-19 vaccines is low. However, specific urologic complications such as gross hematuria are not low in incidence.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that donor nephrectomy can induce renal function impairment. However, few meta-analysis studies about this have proceeded. Therefore, the objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis including all data of recent research studies was to determine whether living donor nephrectomy (LDN) could induce renal function impairment. METHODS: By November 2020, comprehensive literature searches were performed on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. Inclusion criteria were: (1) observational studies with data about overall end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or chronic kidney disease (CKD) of living kidney donors, (2) control group consisted of people without donor nephrectomy, and (3) outcomes of studies included long-term end-stage renal disease risks after living kidney donation. Risk of Bias in Non-randomized Studies of interventions (ROBINS-I) assessment tool was used to evaluate our methodological quality. RESULTS: The qualitative review included 11 studies and the meta-analysis included 5 studies. In the meta-analysis, the integrated overall ESRD risk was 5.57 (95% CI: 2.03-15.30). Regarding the overall risk of bias using ROBINS-I assessment tool, 0 studies was rated as "Low", 7 studies were rated as "moderate", 2 studies were rated as "Serious", and two studies were rated as "Critical". CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed that LDN increased ESRD risk in LDN patients. However, in our meta-analysis, variables in included studies were not uniform and the number of included studies was small. To have a definite conclusion, meta-analyses of well-planned and detailed studies need to be conducted in the future.

Living liver donors (LLDs) are screened for transmissible diseases including cancer. We investigated the actual cancer incidence of LLDs compared with a matched healthy control group from the general Korean population using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Services (NHIS). A total of 12,372 LLDs who donated a liver graft between 2002 and 2018 were registered in the Korean Network for Organ Sharing. They were compared to a matched healthy control group selected from the Korean NHIS. Cancer diagnosis was identified in 175 LLDs (1.4%) and 1,014 controls (0.8%). Compared to the healthy control group, the incidence rate ratio of liver and thyroid cancer in the LLD group were significantly higher at 18.30 and 1.39, respectively. The incidences of 11 other specified cancers were not different between the two groups. The present study suggests that LLD after donor hepatectomy may require medical surveillance, especially for liver cancer.

PURPOSE: To compare the amount of abrasion of four whitening toothpastes, two conventional toothpastes, and seven experimental toothpastes with varying concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were treated with the four whitening toothpastes (containing three different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide: 0.75%, 1.50%, and 2.80%), two conventional toothpastes without hydrogen peroxide, seven experimental toothpastes (concentrations of hydrogen peroxide: 0.75%, 1.50%, 3.0%, 4.50%, 6.0%, 7.50%, and 9.0%), and distilled water. After 10,000 strokes of toothbrushing, the amount of abrasion on the dentin surface was measured with a contactless 3D surface profiler (n= 8). The pH of all solutions, the weight percentages of the particles, and the component of particles in the toothpaste were analyzed. The correlations between the dentin abrasion, pH, and weight percentages of the particles in the toothpastes were investigated. RESULTS: The amount of abrasion of the two conventional toothpastes were 1.1-3.6 times higher than those of the four whitening toothpastes. Likewise, the pH of the conventional toothpaste was higher than those of the other whitening toothpastes. No significant differences were found among the four whitening toothpastes. The four whitening toothpastes consisted of a relatively lower weight percentage of particles compared to the two conventional toothpastes. A strong positive correlation was observed between the dentin abrasion and the weight percentages of the particles (r= 0.913; P< 0.05). Furthermore, no significant differences in the amount of abrasion were observed between the specimens treated with seven experimental toothpastes and those treated with distilled water. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The whitening toothpastes containing less than 9% hydrogen peroxide did not seem to harm the dentin surface significantly. These findings can serve as a reference for consumers, patients, and dental professionals.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the amount of dentin loss following immersion in or toothbrushing with whitening toothpaste (WT) containing hydrogen peroxide (HP) and citric acid (CA). Additionally, the amount of dentin loss after brushing with a WT alone or in combination with a conventional toothpaste was assessed, and the effects of HP and CA solutions on the dentin surface were investigated. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens (n= 350) were randomly assigned to seven solutions of various compositions as toothpaste: The specimens assigned to each solution were then further divided into five treatment groups (n=10 each) : Group A = 1-hour immersion in each solution (ES); Group B = 10,000 brushing in ES; Group C = 1-hour immersion in ES + 10,000 brushing in ES; Group D = 1-hour immersion in ES + 10,000 brushing in reference slurry (RS); Group E = 10,000 brushing in ES + 10,000 brushing in RS. The amount and pattern of dentin loss were determined, and the surfaces were observed using noncontact profilometry. RESULTS: The WT (pH 5.0) caused lower dentin loss than RS after a single brushing cycle; however, the extent of dentin loss after 1 hour of immersion in the WT was significantly greater than that in the RS. Among the specimens treated with WT, a significant difference in dentin loss was observed between Group C and Groups D and E (P< 0.05) but not between Groups D and E. The surfaces exposed to CAS1, CAPB, and WT exhibited U-shaped patterns of dentin loss after brushing or immersion, whereas a wedge-shaped pattern was observed in those that underwent brushing with the RS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The effects (dentin abrasion) of a whitening toothpaste containing hydrogen peroxide and citric acid when used in combination with a conventional toothpaste were similar to those seen with the continuous use of a conventional toothpaste alone.

Many human pathologies, such as malignancy, are linked with specific bacteria and changes in the constituents of the microbiome. In order to examine the association between an imbalance of bacteria and prostate carcinoma, a comparison of the microbiomes present in patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) or NO BCR (NBCR) was performed. Additionally, 16S rRNA-based next-generation sequencing was applied to identify the bacterial profiles within these tumors in terms of the bacteria and operational genes present. The percentage average taxonomic composition between the taxa indicated no difference between BCR and NBCR. In addition, alpha and beta diversity indices presented no distinction between the cohorts in any statistical method. However, taxonomic biomarker discovery indicated a relatively higher population of Lactobacillus in the NBCR group, and this finding was supported by PCR data. Along with that, differences in the operational activity of the bacterial genes were also determined. It is proposed that the biochemical recurrence was linked to the quantity of Lactobacillus present. The aim of this study was to investigate the microbiome involved in prostate carcinoma and the potential association between them.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen peroxide (HP) and citric acid (CA), key contributors to toothpaste acidity, can lead to dental loss. This study aimed to compare the amount of abrasion or loss of dentin based on pH, buffering, and concentration of HP and CA in commercial and experimental toothpastes after toothbrushing or immersion. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were randomly assigned to nine solutions. The prepared solutions included two commercial toothpastes (whitening toothpaste [WT] with HP and CA; conventional toothpaste [CT] without HP and CA), reference slurry (RS), two CA solutions (1.92%, CAS1; 0.001%, CAS2), basic solution (7.16% sodium phosphate dibasic [SPDS]), CA phosphate buffer solution (3.58% SPDS and 0.96% CA [CAPB]), HP solution (4%, HPS), and distilled water (DW). Dentin specimens were performed in two treatments: one with only abrasion (10,000 brushings) and one with only immersion (1 h). After treatments, the amount of dentin loss and surface images were measured and observed using noncontact profilometry. Data were analyzed using an one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test as a post hoc analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS: WT with pH 5.0 had lower dentin abrasion than CT and RS after brushing but had higher dentin loss than both after immersion. The dentin surfaces of CAS1, CAPB, and WT were damaged after immersion, whereas HPS, CAS2, CT, SPDS, RS, and DW remained intact after soaking. CAS2 and HPS, which had a pH of 5.0 like WT, did not significantly differ from those of DW after brushing. CONCLUSIONS: WT containing HP and CA did not cause significant dentin abrasion but may cause additional dentin loss even without brushing. After brushing or immersion, the CA concentration may affect the dentin surface more than the HP concentration included in WT. The amount of abrasion or loss of dentin after brushing or soaking can vary based on the composition, concentration, and buffer in the solution, even if the pH of the solution is similar to pH 5.0.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Donor death is the most serious complication of living liver donation but is reported rarely. We investigated the actual mortality of living liver donors (LLDs) compared with matched control groups based on analysis of the Korean National Health Insurance Services (NHIS) database. METHODS: This cohort study included 12,372 LLDs who donated a liver graft between 2002 and 2018, and were registered in the Korean Network for Organ Sharing. They were compared to 3 matched control groups selected from the Korean NHIS and comprising a total of 123,710 individuals: healthy population (Group I); general population without comorbidities (Group II); and general population with comorbidities (Group III). RESULTS: In this population, 78.5% of living liver donors were 20-39 years old, and 64.7% of all donors were male. Eighty-nine donors (0.7%) in the LLD group died (68 males and 21 females), a mortality rate (/1,000 person-years) of 0.91 (0.74-1.12). Mortality rate ratio and the adjusted hazard ratio of the LLD group was 2.03 (1.61-2.55) and 1.71 (1.31-2.25) compared to Control Group I, 0.75 (0.60-0.93) and 0.63 (0.49-0.82) compared to Control Group II, and 0.58 (0.46-0.71) and 0.49 (0.39-0.60) compared to Control Group III. LLD group, depression, and lower income were risk factors for adjusted mortality. The incidence of liver failure, depression, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, brain infarction, brain hemorrhage, and end-stage renal disease in the LLD group was significantly higher than in Control Group I. CONCLUSIONS: Outcomes of the LLD group were worse than those of the matched healthy control group despite the small number of deaths and medical morbidities in this group. LLDs should receive careful medical attention for an extended period after donation. LAY SUMMARY: The incidence of mortality, liver failure, depression, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, brain infarction, brain hemorrhage, and end-stage renal disease in the living liver donor group was significantly higher than in the matched healthy group. Careful donor evaluation and selection processes can improve donor safety and enable safe living donor liver transplantation.

OBJECTIVES: Postprostatectomy urinary incontinence (PPUI) is a serious complication despite surgical advances. Treatment options for PPUI include conservative care like Pelvic floor muscle exercise (PFME), which is a physiotherapy performed by the patients themselves; Pelvic floor muscle therapy (PFMT), a physiotherapy performed under the guidance of a therapist, and duloxetine treatment; and surgical interventions. In this study, network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed for direct comparison of these treatment options. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The NMA pooled the odds ratios and 95% credible intervals using the number of patients achieving urinary continence and the total number of patients in an intention-to-treat population. The treatments were ranked based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) probabilities and the rankograms. RESULTS: The pooled overall ORs of patients achieving urinary continence compared with no treatment was 1.73 (95% CrI: 0.657, 4.71) in PFME, 2.62 (95% CrI: 0.553, 13.5) in PFME plus Duloxetine, and 4.05 (95% CrI: 1.70, 10.2) in PFMT. The SUCRA values of ranking probabilities for each treatment showed high rates of continence in the order of PFMT, PFME plus Duloxetine, and PFME. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that patients with PPUI should undergo PFMT and consider duloxetine as an additional treatment option.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is no clear data to compare the effectiveness and safety of bilateral stent-in-stent (SIS) or stent-by-stent (SBS) deployment for advanced malignant hilar obstruction (MHO). This meta-analysis was done to investigate clinical outcomes of these deployment methods. METHODS: We did a literature search to identify studies that reported the clinical outcomes of bilateral metal stents in patients with advanced MHO. Weighed pooled rates (WPR) along with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated in order to compare outcomes including technical and clinical success, adverse events, and stent occlusion between the two groups. We conducted a meta-analysis using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Five comparative studies with 250 patients, and 20 single-arm studies for the SIS or SBS method were eligible for the meta-analysis and systematic review. The bilateral SIS deployment had a significantly higher technical success rate than did SBS deployment (OR 6.43; 95% CI 1.08-38.09). There was no difference in the clinical success (OR 1.23; 95% CI 0.45-3.38), overall adverse events rates (OR 0.42; 95% CI 0.15-1.18), or overall occlusion rate (OR 1.55; 95% CI 0.89-2.70). As a single-armed group, WPR of technical success of the SIS and SBS groups was 96.4% and 89.6%, respectively. Clinical success was 97.5% and 98.3%. Overall, adverse events were 35.9% and 22.6%. Occlusion rates were 27.7% and 37.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Although there was a lack of quality data and heterogeneity, bilateral SIS deployment had a higher technical feasibility than did the SBS method in patients with advanced MHO, without differences in terms of clinical success, adverse events, or occlusion rates.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the drug prescription patterns for men diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in Korea. METHODS: We extracted the data of 3% of the national patient samples including men aged ≥ 40 years between 2012 and 2017 from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment database and investigated the drugs prescribed for men with the BPH code N40. Men with a diagnosis of BPH but not receiving treatment were excluded. The primary outcome was the drugs prescribed and the changes in drug prescription pattern over 6 years for men first diagnosed with BPH. RESULTS: Alpha blockers were the most commonly prescribed drugs in men with BPH, and tamsulosin was the most common. The proportion of prescriptions increased steadily. The number of prescriptions for anticholinergics (ACH) increased, but decreased with the start of mirabegron prescriptions in 2015. Prescriptions of mirabegron are increasing rapidly and replacing ACH. Based on the prescription pattern by drug category, alpha blocker monotherapy decreased, whereas combination therapies such as alpha blocker + 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (5ARI), and alpha blocker + 5ARI + ACH increased steadily. As for the number of prescriptions by drug ingredient, tamsulosin monotherapy was the most common, and the combination therapy of tamsulosin and mirabegron increased. CONCLUSION: Alpha blockers were the most commonly prescribed drug for men first diagnosed with BPH in Korea from 2012 to 2017, and tamsulosin was the most common alpha blocker. Prescriptions of combination therapy and mirabegron are gradually increasing.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia damages the bladder wall and contributes to the initiation of bladder dysfunction. The change of hypoxia is not well known in impaired bladder contractility caused by long-term bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). We aimed to find out whether hypoxia of bladder tissue is present and what signaling mechanisms are involved in the decompensated bladder in BOO. METHODS: Twenty 6-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 2 groups, 10 rats each: group 1, sham operation; group 2, BOO for 8 weeks. Eight weeks after the onset of BOO, we did cystometric evaluation and processed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array for hypoxia pathway using bladder tissues. The PCR array consists of 84 genes known to be involved in the hypoxic response, cell differentiation, and metabolism. We did quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunohistochemical staining of bladder tissue for hypoxia. RESULTS: Eight genes were at least 2-fold upregulated and 3 genes were at least 2-fold downregulated in BOO group, compared with the sham operation group. The up-regulated genes (fold change) belonging to the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) 1 interactor included Cdkn2a (11.0), and the down-regulated genes belonging to HIF and co-transcription factors included Hif3a (-39.6) and Per1 (-5.1) by BOO. Genes influenced each other by means of TGFß1, TNF, and TP53. CONCLUSION: Hypoxia genes were increased in impaired contractility because of long-term BOO. The gene expression profiles could explain the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia in impaired contractility because of long-term BOO.

BACKGROUND: Several cohort studies have explored the relationship between androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study aimed to characterize the relationship between ADT and the severity of COVID-19 in patients with prostate cancer. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from the inception of each database until February 31, 2020. Patients with prostate cancer who were treated with ADT were assigned to treatment group while those patients who were not treated with ADT were assigned to the control group. Outcomes were severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) positivity, hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and death. The risk of bias was evaluated using ROBINS-I (Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions) tool. RESULTS: Three studies with qualitative synthesis were included. Finally, two studies with quantitative synthesis having a total of 44,213 patients were included for the present systematic review. There was no significant difference in SARS-CoV-2 positive rate (odds ratio [OR], 0.52; 95% confidence intervals [Cis], 0.13-2.09; P = 0.362), hospitalization (OR, 0.52; 95% CIs, 0.07-3.69; P = 0.514), ICU admission (OR, 0.93; 95% CIs, 0.39-2.23, P = 0.881), or death (OR, 0.88; 95% CIs, 0.06-12.06; P = 0.934) between ADT and non-ADT groups. CONCLUSION: Qualitative and quantitative analyses of previous studies revealed no significant effect of ADT on COVID-19. However, more studies with higher quality that explore biochemical and immunological factors involved are needed to confirm this finding in the future.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the persistence and adherence rate of overactive bladder medications and factors that affect these rates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted electronic English-language literature searches of the PubMed®, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE® databases from the earliest available date of indexing through May 21, 2019 using the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms and EMBASE subject headings (Emtree). Primary measurement outcomes were overall persistence and adherence rate at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months in anticholinergics and mirabegron. Secondary outcomes were individual effect of each medication on persistence and adherence rate at 12 months, and moderating factors affecting the overall persistence and adherence rate at 12 months. RESULTS: Pooled overall persistence rate at 12 months of overactive bladder medications of anticholinergics and mirabegron was 0.218 (95% CI: 0.197-0.240). The pooled overall persistence rate at 12 months was 0.402 (95% CI: 0.277-0.528) in mirabegron, 0.249 (95% CI: 0.182-0.316) in solifenacin, and 0.220 (95% CI: 0.078-0.361) in fesoterodine. Overall adherence rate of overactive bladder medications of anticholinergics and mirabegron was 0.589 (95% CI: 0.507-0.670). The pooled overall adherence rate at 12 months was 0.654 (95% CI: 0.528-0.781) in mirabegron, 0.784 (95% CI: 0.588-0.980) in solifenacin, 0.782 (95% CI: 0.652-0.911) in fesoterodine, and 0.679 (95% CI: 0.651-0.707) in imidafenacin. Persistence and adherence rates were associated with age, gender, anticholinergic exposure history, type of medication, study type, and study year. CONCLUSIONS: Persistence and adherence rates were lower than previously reported and were associated with certain clinical and demographic factors.

RATIONALE: Although PSA (prostate-specific antigen)-a tumor marker for prostate cancer-has been reported to be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, studies on the association of PSA with subclinical and clinical CVD remain limited. OBJECTIVE: We examined the association of total serum PSA within the reference range with coronary artery calcium (CAC) score and CVD mortality. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 88 203 Korean men who underwent a health checkup exam including cardiac tomography estimation of CAC score. Logistic regression model was used to calculate odds ratios with 95% CIs for prevalent CAC. PSA levels were inversely associated with the presence of CAC. After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (95% CIs) for prevalent CAC comparing PSA quartiles 2, 3, and 4 to the first quartile were 0.96 (0.90-1.01), 0.88 (0.83-0.93), and 0.85 (0.80-0.90), respectively ( P for trend, <0.001). A cohort study was performed in 243 435 Korean men with a mean age of 39.3 years, PSA values of <4.0 ng/mL, and without known CVD or prostate disease who were followed up with for ≤14 years for CVD mortality (median, 7.3 years). CVD deaths were ascertained through linkage to national death records. Hazard ratios and 95% CIs for CVD mortality were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression analyses. During 1 829 070.1 person-years of follow-up, 336 CVD deaths were identified. After adjustment for potential confounders, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) for CVD mortality comparing PSA quartiles 2, 3, and 4 to the lowest quartile were 0.90 (0.66-1.22), 0.79 (0.58-1.08), and 0.69 (0.51-0.93), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Serum total PSA levels within the reference range showed an inverse association with subclinical atherosclerosis and CVD mortality in young and middle-aged Korean men, indicating a possible role of PSA as a predictive marker for subclinical and clinical CVD.

Soybean pods, separated and enclosed from the outside environment, are considered a suitable place to find new microbes. A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic bacterium, bacterial strain (YB22T) was isolated from the pod of Glycine max (soybean) collected from a rural area in Republic of Korea and characterized by using polyphasic taxonomy. Cells of the strain were rod-shaped (approximately 0.4-0.6 µm wide and 4.0-5.0 µm long), non-flagellated and formed silver-yellow colonies. Cells grew at 25-35 °C (optimum, 28-30 °C), at pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0-2.0% NaCl (optimum, 0 % NaCl). 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that strain YB22T was phylogenetically closest to the genus Elizabethkingia, and showed highest similarities to Elizabethkingia occulta G4070T (96.7 %), Elizabethkingia meningoseptica ATCC 13253T (96.7 %), Elizabethkingia miricola DSM 14571T (96.6 %), Elizabethkingia bruuniana G0146T (96.5 %), Elizabethkingia ursingii G4122T (96.4 %) and Elizabethkingia anophelis R26T (96.2 %). Average amino acid identity values between strain YB22T and other taxa in the genus Elizabethkingia were all above the threshold range of genus determination. Average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain YB22T and other phylogenetic relatives were all found to be below the threshold range for species determination. The respiratory quinone of strain YB22T was menaquinone 6 (MK-6) and the predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (47.8 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (18.5 %). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, four unidentified aminolipids and three unidentified polar lipids. The phylogenetic analysis and physiological and biochemical data showed that strain YB22T should represent a novel species in the genus Elizabethkingia, for which the name Elizabethkingia argenteiflava sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain for this novel species is YB22T (=KCCM 43263T=JCM 32097T).
