RESUMEN

Protein-ligand interactions in crowded cellular environments play a crucial role in biological functions. The crowded environment can perturb the overall protein structure and local conformation, thereby influencing the binding pathway of protein-ligand reactions within the cellular milieu. Therefore, a detailed understanding of the local conformation is crucial for elucidating the intricacies of protein-ligand interactions in crowded cellular environments. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of induced circular dichroism (ICD) using 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (ANS) for local conformational analysis at the binding site in a crowding environment. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) concentration-dependent measurements were performed to assess the feasibility of ANS-ICD for analyzing protein interior binding sites. The results showed distinct changes in the ANS-ICD spectra of BSA solutions, indicating their potential for analyzing the internal conformation of proteins. Moreover, temperature-dependent measurements were performed in dilute and crowding environments, revealing distinct denaturation pathways of BSA binding sites. Principal component analysis of ANS-ICD spectral changes revealed lower temperature pre-denaturation in the crowded solution than that in the diluted solution, suggesting destabilization of binding sites owing to self-crowding repulsive interactions. The established ANS-ICD method can provide valuable conformational insights into protein-ligand interactions in crowded cellular environments.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] This study investigated the characteristics of postural control following postural disturbance in elite athletes. [Subjects] Ten elite ski jumpers and ten control subjects participated in this study. [Methods] Subjects were required to maintain balance without stepping following unexpected horizontal surface perturbation in a forward or backward direction. [Results] A lower and reproducible peak magnitude of the center of mass velocity was shown in the athlete group compared to the control group. Cross-correlation analyses showed longer time lags at the moment of peak correlation coefficient between trunk flexor and extensor muscle activities, and shorter time lags and higher correlations between ankle flexor and extensor muscle activities were shown in the athlete group than in the control group. [Conclusion] The elite ski jumpers showed superior balance performance following surface perturbations, more reciprocal patterns in agonist-antagonist pairs of proximal postural muscles, and more co-contraction patterns in distal postural muscles during automatic postural responses than control individuals. This strategy may be useful in sports requiring effective balance recovery in environments with a dynamically changing surface, as well as in rehabilitation.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) exhibit excellent mechanical properties and are used to reinforce various composites. The effects of incorporating CNFs into commercial mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) cements (NEX MTA (NEX) and ProRoot® MTA (PR)) on the underwater setting properties, compressive strength, and flowability were estimated in this study. NEX mixed without CNFs disintegrated after water immersion. NEX mixed with CNF-suspended solutions showed good setting properties under water immersion and a similar compressive strength, which was kept in air (100% relative humidity). PR did not degrade after water immersion, regardless of the presence of CNFs, and no significant difference in the compressive strength caused by CNFs incorporation was detected. The relative flowability of the NEX mixture decreased with increasing CNFs content up to 1.0 w/v%. The application of CNF-incorporated MTA in various dental cases is promising because CNFs prevent the water-immersion-dependent collapse of some MTA cements immediately after mixing.

In this study, fine powders of tristrontium aluminate (S3A) and distrontium cerate (S2Ce) cement were prepared using a dry grinding process, and their mechanical and ion dissolution properties were estimated. Fine cements showed the particles about 10 µm in diameter or smaller with sharp particle size distribution curves. The setting reaction of the fine cements was rapid; therefore, a 0.1% w/v of citric acid solution was used as the retarder. The compressive strengths of the fine cements were improved compared to those of the coarse cements at both 1 and 28 days after mixing at a water/powder ratio (W/P) of 0.4. The dissolution of Sr and Al ions from fine S3A cement was enhanced. However, the relative flowability decreases with fine grinding. Further studies on flowability, handling property are required. Additionally, the biological effects of endodontic cement should be studied both in vitro and in vivo.

A novel use of GaAs, namely, as a scaffold for a heterogeneous palladium catalyst, is proposed. Hydroxy groups on the GaAs surface play important roles. During the adsorption of Pd(OAc)(2) on the GaAs surface, the hydroxy groups attract Pd(ii) species by anion exchange. A subsequent redox reaction proceeds to generate Pd(0) nanoparticles, which are stabilized on the GaAs surface. This process is confirmed by surface-sensitive measurements: diffuse reflection IR spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Moreover, a more bulk-sensitive measurement, hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation, also supported our considerations. The amounts of Pd(0) nanoparticles on the surface were evaluated by catalytic activity, yield, and recyclability in the Heck reaction, in addition to the deposit test.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to investigate the adaptation with practice of postural control while standing on a rocker board. Thirteen healthy young adults participated. The participants were asked to stand in a sagittal plane on a rocker board with a semicircular base as steadily as possible for as long as they could. With practice, the duration of maintaining postural balance increased significantly and postural stability improved (P<0.05). Furthermore, the distances between center of pressure and the projection of center of mass decreased (P<0.05), although joint motion of the lower extremities did not change (P>0.05). This observation would be the consequence of a highly redundant human locomotor system. With practice, the central nervous system was able to shift the center of pressure position close to the accurate center of mass position.

Surface of an InAs wetting layer on GaAs(001) preceding InAs quantum dot (QD) formation was observed at 300°C with in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Domains of (1 × 3)/(2 × 3) and (2 × 4) surface reconstructions were located in the STM image. The density of each surface reconstruction domain was comparable to that of subsequently nucleated QD precursors. The distribution of the domains was statistically investigated in terms of spatial point patterns. It was found that the domains were distributed in an ordered pattern rather than a random pattern. It implied the possibility that QD nucleation sites are related to the surface reconstruction domains.
