RESUMEN

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has been associated with poorer mental health outcomes and increased human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risk behaviors. We examine the relations between IPV, mental health symptomology (defined as psychological distress and alcohol misuse), and engagement in HIV risk behaviors among a sample of South African women who participated in a randomized controlled trial of CHARISMA, an intervention to increase women's agency to use oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) safely and consistently as well as mitigate relationship challenges. We also examined the impact of trial participation on women's mental health, as well as the impact of psychological distress on the effectiveness of the CHARISMA intervention. Mental health symptomology and IPV exposure were prevalent and associated with some HIV risk and protective behaviors. Trial participation reduced psychological distress. There was no evidence for mental health symptomology impacting the effectiveness of the CHARISMA intervention.

RESUMEN

When teeth have responded poorly to conventional endodontic treatment or when they cannot be treated adequately by nonsurgical means, surgical endodontics remains the treatment of choice. Healing of apical lesions occurs by repair, most of the time. "Repair is the healing of a wound by tissue that does not fully restore the architecture or function of the affected unit". Since this is not ideal, newer regenerative procedures that aim to restore lost tissue have been introduced. ß -Tricalcium phosphate is an alloplastic bone graft material that forms a scaffold for closing the bony defect. It is osteoconductive. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are platelet concentrates, rich in growth factors and they promote regeneration by osteoinduction. This article describes cases of bone augmentation with a combination of PRP + ß -TCP and PRF + ß -TCP for treatment of the chronic periapical lesion. The cases were followed for six months and one year and healing was evaluated quantitatively using cone beam computed tomography.

RESUMEN

The present study deals with the transformation of L-tyrosine to L-dopa by Acremonium rutilum, a fungal tyrosinase producer, isolated from decomposed banana stud. This appears to be the first report on A. rutilum as a polyphenoloxidase producer with both cresolase and catecholase activity. Enriched Czapek-Dox agar was used for plate assay screening. Enriched potato dextrose broth was used for optimization studies, which induced high levels of L-dopa under submerged fermentation. A. rutilum gave the maximum L-dopa production (0.89 mg/ml) and tyrosinase activity (1095 U/mg) under the optimized parameters, that is, a temperature of 25 degrees C, pH 5.5, an inoculum size of 2.5 ml, and an incubation time of 72-120 h, with L-tyrosine (5 mg/ml) as substrate. Five resolved bands, with R(f) values of 0.73, 0.60, 0.54, 0.37, and 0.26, were observed, which confirmed the presence of L-dopa. This study involves the elevated profile of L-dopa production. Such study is needed, as L-dopa has the ability to control Parkinson's disease.

RESUMEN

Silver nanoparticles (AgNP-P) from AgNO(3) were synthesized by using the broth prepared from the aromatic spath of male inflorescence of screw pine, Pandanus odorifer (Forssk.) Kuntze AgNP-P was then characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Functional groups in the broth were analyzed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Genotoxicity of AgNP-P was assessed by utilizing our well-established Allium cepa assay system with biomarkers including the generation reactive oxygen species (ROS: O(2)(·-) and H(2)O(2)), cell death, mitotic index, micronucleus, mitotic aberrations; and DNA damage by Comet assay. Other chemical forms of silver such as Ag(+) ion, colloidal AgCl, and AgNP-S at doses 0-80 mg L(-1) were included for comparison with AgNP-P. The results revealed that AgNP-P and AgNP-S exhibited similar biological effects in causing lesser extent of cytotoxicity and greater extent of genotoxicity than that was exhibited by Ag(+) ion alone. Among different tested chemical forms of silver, colloidal AgCl was identified to be the least cytotoxic and genotoxic. Cell death and DNA-damage induced by AgNP-P were prevented by Tiron and dimethyl thiourea that scavenge O(2)(·-) and H(2)O(2), respectively. The present findings demonstrated the role of ROS in the AgNP-induced cell death and DNA damage.
