RESUMEN

Mandibular arteriovenous malformations are rare congenital malformations that require multidisciplinary care. Implant-supported rehabilitation of significant bone defect after embolization and resection is poorly described in the literature. We present the case of a 24-year-old patient with a right-sided mandibular arteriovenous malformation diagnosed after massive hemorrhage and treated by embolization and resection surgery. Implant rehabilitation was carried out 9 years later with a prior bone graft through iliac extraction and 3 short implants. Implant survival rate and patient satisfaction were evaluated at 3 years postplacement. Arteriovenous malformations treatments frequently result in bone defects that are difficult to reconstruct because of probable unstable vascularization due to embolization. The presence of osteosynthesis material and artifacts at the radiological level complicates implant planning due to the lack of visualization of the inferior alveolar nerve or artery and necessitates the placement of low-height implants. Osteointegration in contact with embolization products should be monitored. The creation of a case series could be of interest in order to better understand implant treatment for patients with a history of arteriovenous malformations.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Oral lichen is a chronic inflammatory disease for which diagnostic management and follow-up are heterogeneous given the absence of specific guidelines in France. Our objective was to develop French multidisciplinary guidelines for the management of oral lichen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Working groups from the Groupe d'Etude de la Muqueuse Buccale (GEMUB) formulated a list of research questions and the corresponding recommendations according to the "formal consensus" method for developing practice guidelines. These recommendations were submitted to a group of experts and the degree of agreement for each recommendation was assessed by a scoring group. RESULTS: Twenty-two research questions, divided into 3 themes (nosological classification and initial assessment, induced oral lichenoid lesions, and follow-up) resulted in 22 recommendations. Initial biopsy for histology is recommended in the absence of reticulated lesions. Biopsy for direct immunofluorescence is recommended for ulcerated, erosive, bullous types and for diffuse erythematous gingivitis. Management should include a periodontal and dental check-up, and investigation for extra-oral lesions. Hepatitis C testing is recommended only if risk factors are present. Definitions, triggering factors and the management of "induced oral lichenoid lesions" were clarified. Oral lichen must be monitored by a practitioner familiar with the disease at least once a year, using objective tools. CONCLUSION: This formalised consensus of multidisciplinary experts provides clinical practice guidelines on the management and monitoring of oral lichen.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the effect of three interventions including caloric restriction, rope-skipping exercise and caloric restriction combined with rope-skipping exercise on cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight or obese college students. Methods: This study was a pilot randomized controlled trial. Overweight or obese students who met the inclusion criteria were recruited at Sun Yat-sen University in September 2019 and were randomly divided into four groups: caloric restriction group (CR), rope-skipping group (RS), combined group (CR-RS) and control group (CT). The intervention in each group lasted 8 weeks, specifically: the daily energy intake of CR was 100% to 110% of the basal metabolic energy; RS was instructed to rope three times a week, and CR-RS combined caloric restriction with rope-skipping. At the baseline and end of 8-week intervention, basic information, anthropometric indicators and fasting vein blood of students were collected. Paired t test and Wilcoxon paired-samples signed rank test were used for comparison before and after intervention, and analysis of covariance was used for comparison between groups after intervention. Results: A total of 29 students completed the trial and were included in the final analysis (7, 9, 7 and 6 students in CR, RS, CR-RS and CT, respectively). The mean age of students were (19.00±1.00) years, including 11 males and 18 females. The baseline characteristics of four groups were comparable. After 8 weeks of intervention, compared with CT, there was an increase in the body fat percentage and fat mass index in CR and CR-RS (P<0.05). Insulin level decreased in CR-RS (P<0.05). Systolic blood pressure in CR and diastolic blood pressure in CR-RS were higher (P<0.05). Compared with baseline, fat mass index decreased in CR (P<0.05), while body weight, BMI, and fat mass index decreased in CR-RS (P<0.05). Conclusion: It is suggested that the caloric restriction alone and calorie restriction combined with rope-skipping exercise can benefit overweight or obese college students with cardiometabolic risk factors.

RESUMEN

Intensive artificial selection has been imposed in Yunshang black goats, the first black specialist mutton goat breed in China, with a breeding object of improving reproductive performance, which has contributed to reshaping of the genome including the characterization of SNP, ROH and haplotype. However, variation in reproductive ability exists in the present population. A WGS was implemented in two subpopulations (polytocous group, PG, and monotocous group, MG) with evident differences of litter size. Following the mapping to reference genome, and SNP calling and pruning, three approaches - GWAS, ROH analysis and detection of signatures of selection - were employed to unveil candidate genes responsible for litter size. Consequently, 12 candidate genes containing OSBPL8 with the minimum P-value were uncovered by GWAS. Differences were observed in the pattern of ROH between two subpopulations that shared similar low inbreeding coefficients. Two ROH hotspots and 12 corresponding genes emerged from ROH pool association analysis. Based on the nSL statistic, 15 and 61 promising genes were disclosed under selection for MG and PG respectively. Of them, some promising genes participate in ovarian function (PPP2R5C, CDC25A, ESR1, RPS26 and SERPINBs), seasonal reproduction (DIO3, BTG1 and CRYM) and metabolism (OSBPL8, SLC39A5 and SERPINBs). Our study pinpointed some novel promising genes influencing litter size, provided a comprehensive insight into genetic makeup of litter size and might facilitate selective breeding in goats.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the mechanism of androgen in improving erectile dysfunction in castrated rats. Methods: Forty 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into 4 groups:normal control group (Group A); castration group (Group B, in which rats were castrated); intervention groups (group C and D), in which rats were treated with different concentrations of testosterone undecanoate orally every day at 10 mg/kg (low dose) and 20 mg/kg (high dose), respectively after being castrated. Animals in group A and B were given 0.9% NS instead. After 8-week treatment, the level of serum testosterone, intra cavernous pressure (ICP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were detected, and the expression of androgen receptor (AR)and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were detected in the penis by Immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results: The level of serum testosterone was significantly lower in group B [(1.3±0.6) nmol/L] than in group A [(17.1±1.5) nmol/L] (P<0.05).After testosterone supplementation, serum testosterone levels in group C [(8.7±1.2) nmol/L] and group D [(15.5±1.6) nmol/L] were higher than that in group B (all P<0.05). Max ICP/MAP of group C and D were higher than that in group B (all P<0.05). Immunohistochemistry and Western blot showed that the expression levels of AR and VEGF in group B were significantly lower than those in group A, C and D, and group D > group C (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Androgen replacement therapy with testosterone undecanoate can improve the erectile function of castrated rats by protecting the integrity of endothelial cells through AR/VEGF pathway.

RESUMEN

A 12-week trial with 120 [(Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc] pigs (45.65 ± 1.93 kg) was conducted to evaluate the effects of Astragalus membranaceus, Codonopsis pilosula and allicin mixture (HM) supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, faecal microbial shedding, immune response and meat quality in finishing pigs. Pigs were allocated to one of three treatments with 0, 0.025% (HM1) and 0.05% (HM2) HM supplementation in a randomized complete block design according to sex and BW. Each treatment contained 10 replications with four pigs (two barrows and two gilts) per pen. Dietary HM resulted in a higher G:F (p < 0.05) than CON group during weeks 7 to 12 and the overall periods. Pigs fed HM2 diet had higher ADG than pigs fed CON diet. Pigs fed HM2 supplementation diet led to a higher (p < 0.05) apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM) and gross energy (GE) than pigs fed CON diet at week 6, while the supplementation of HM led to a higher (p < 0.05) ATTD of DM and GE than pigs fed CON diet at week 12. The faecal E. coli counts were reduced, and Lactobacillus counts were increased by increasing HM supplementation (p < 0.05). Pigs fed HM1 diet had higher (p < 0.05) WBC concentration than those fed CON and HM2 diets at week 6. Pigs fed HM-supplemented diet had higher (p < 0.05) IgG and IgA concentrations than those fed CON diet at week 12. Pigs fed HM diet noted better (p < 0.05) meat colour and redness value than pigs fed CON diet. Pig fed HM2 reduced (p < 0.05) the lightness value compared with CON group. In conclusion, dietary HM supplementation exerted beneficial effects on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal microbial balance (increased Lactobacillus counts and decreased E. coli counts), immune response and meat quality.

RESUMEN

A Ho:YAG ceramic microchip laser pumped by a Tm fiber laser at 1910 nm is passively Q-switched by single- and multi-layer graphene, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and Cr2+:ZnSe saturable absorbers (SAs). Employing SWCNTs, this laser generated an average power of 810 mW at 2090 nm with a slope efficiency of 68% and continuous wave to Q-switching conversion efficiency of 70%. The shortest pulse duration was 85 ns at a repetition rate of 165 kHz, and the pulse energy reached 4.9 µJ. The laser performance and pulse stability were superior compared to graphene SAs even for a different number of graphene layers (n=1 to 4). A model for the description of the Ho:YAG laser Q-switched by carbon nanostructures is presented. This modeling allowed us to estimate the saturation intensity for multi-layered graphene and SWCNT SAs to be 1.2±0.2 and 7±1 MW/cm2, respectively. When using Cr2+:ZnSe, the Ho:YAG microchip laser generated 11 ns/25 µJ pulses at a repetition rate of 14.8 kHz.

RESUMEN

This experiment was conducted to investigate the efficacy of multistrain probiotics in weaning pigs. A total of 125 28-day-old weaning pigs [(Landrace × Yorkshire) × Duroc] with an initial average body weight (BW) of 7.26 ± 0.76 kg were randomly allotted into 5 treatments, 5 replicate pens/treatment with 5 pigs/pen for 42-day experiment. Dietary treatments were as follows: CON, basal diet; PC1, CON + 0.01% multistrain probiotics; PC2, CON + 0.03% multistrain probiotics; PC3, CON + 0.06% multistrain probiotics; PC4, CON + 0.1% multistrain probiotics. On day 14, pigs fed the PC4 diet had higher BW gain than pigs fed the CON diet. On day 42, pigs fed multistrain probiotics supplementation diets had higher BW gain than pigs fed the CON diet. From days 1 to 14, pigs fed the PC2, PC3 and PC4 diets had higher (p < 0.05) ADG than pigs fed the CON diet. From day 15 to 42, pigs fed the multistrain probiotics supplementation diets had higher (p < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) and gain: feed ratio (G:F) than pigs fed the CON diet. In the overall period, pigs fed the multistrain probiotics supplementation diets had higher (p < 0.05) ADG and pigs fed the PC2 and PC4 diets had higher (p < 0.05) G:F than pigs fed the CON diet. On day 42, pigs fed the PC4 diet had higher (p < 0.05) apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and gross energy (GE), faecal Lactobacillus counts and lower (p < 0.05) E. coli counts and NH3 emission than pigs fed the CON diet. Pigs fed the multistrain probiotics supplementation diets had lower (p < 0.05) H2 S and total mercaptans emissions than pigs fed the CON diet. Conclusions, dietary supplementation with 0.1% probiotics improved growth performance, nutrition digestibility and intestinal microflora balance and decreased faecal noxious gas emissions in weaning pigs.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This article presents the analysis of dental remains and waste from the dental office of a German rest camp of the First World War in order to study the living conditions of the soldiers, the care policy and the prosthetic rehabilitation techniques used in this context. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included both dental and prosthetic remains, revealed during the excavation. The criteria to determine dental and periodontal health were the presence or absence of caries, wear, tartar and periodontal lesion. Location, severity and frequency of each of these parameters were examined. Regarding the prosthetic remains, the type of prosthesis and the materials used were determined. RESULTS: Three hundred and twenty seven (327) dental remains were analyzed. A high prevalence of large caries, especially in the molar areas, was highlighted. The incisal areas had however more wear and tartar. 183 casts of plaster dental arcade allowed to highlight a significant proportion of posterior edentulous. Prosthetic remains and laboratory waste revealed the use of vulcanite and porcelain for making dentures.

RESUMEN

Introduction: The distinction between giant cell tumors and giant cell granulomas is challenging, as both entities have overlapping diagnostic criteria, especially in oral locations. The two entities have similar clinical and radiological presentations, but they differ in their prognoses. Objective: The main objective of this study was to list the clinical, radiological, histological, and prognostic features of maxillomandibular giant cell tumors and giant cell granulomas cases n order to assess their value as a diagnostic referral factor that may allow the distinction between maxillo-mandibular giant cell granuloma and giant cell tumor. Study design: Data of maxillomandibular giant cell granulomas and giant cell tumors were assessed through a scoping review and a pre-existing systematic review of literature. We have also realized a bicentric retrospective study. Results: Various criteria facilitate the differential diagnosis like age, size, locularity and presence of necrosis zone but not the gender. The most discriminating factors was symptomatology (reported in 72% of GCTs while only 15% of GCGs) and the distribution pattern of giant cells in the stroma (homogeneously dispersed in 80% of GCTs versus grouped in clusters in 86.7% of GCGs). Recurrences were most described for giant cell tumors than giant cell granulomas. Malignant transformation and pulmonary metastasis were exclusively reported for giant cell tumors. Conclusion: As clinical and radiological elements are not sufficient to distinguish between these two entities, immunohistochemistry and molecular genetics can be represent diagnostic biomarkers to distinguish giant cell granulomas and giant cell tumors in oral cavity. We have attempted to define the main criteria for the differentiation of giant cell tumor and giant cell granuloma and propose a decision tree for the management of single maxillomandibular giant cell lesions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Corynebacteritum straitum has been considered as an emerging multi-drug-resistant (MDR) pathogen. Isolation of MDR C. striatum as the only organism from respiratory samples from hospitalized patients is increasing in China. AIM: To elucidate the genomic epidemiology and evolution of C. striatum in China. METHODS: A total of 260 isolates from 2016 to 2018 were collected from three hospitals in three regions of China. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was performed on all isolates. Whole-genome sequencing was applied to all isolates to assess their genomic diversity and relationships and detect the presence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG) and ARG cassettes. FINDINGS: Almost all isolates (96.2%, 250/260) showed multi-drug-resistance. Genome sequencing revealed four major lineages with lineage IV emerging as the epidemic lineage. Most of the diversity was developed in the last 6 years. Each hospital has its own predominant clones with potential spread between Hebei and Guangdong hospitals. Genomic analysis further revealed multiple antimicrobial resistance genes. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that four lineages of C. striatum have spread in parallel across China, causing persistent and extensive transmissions within hospitals. MDR C. striatum infection has become a national epidemic. Antibiotic-driven selection pressure may have played significant roles in forming persistent and predominant clones. Our data provide the basis for surveillance and prevention strategies to control the epidemic caused by MDR C. striatum.

RESUMEN

The common phenomenon of lightning still harbors many secrets such as what are the conditions for lightning initiation and what is driving the discharge to propagate over several tens of kilometers through the atmosphere forming conducting ionized channels called leaders. Since lightning is an electric discharge phenomenon, there are positively and negatively charged leaders. In this work we report on measurements made with the LOFAR radio telescope, an instrument primarily build for radio-astronomy observations. It is observed that a negative leader rather suddenly changes, for a few milliseconds, into a mode where it radiates 100 times more VHF power than typical negative leaders after which it spawns a large number of more typical negative leaders. This mode occurs during the initial stage, soon after initiation, of all lightning flashes we have mapped (about 25). For some flashes this mode occurs also well after initiation and we show one case where it is triggered twice, some 100 ms apart. We postulate that this is indicative of a small (order of 5 km[Formula: see text]) high charge pocket. Lightning thus appears to be initiated exclusively in the vicinity of such a small but dense charge pocket.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common complication in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) that severely affects the patients' quality of life. However, the effectiveness of oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors in these patients is poor. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and S1P receptor 2 (S1PR2) are important factors regulating the Rho-kinase pathway, and understanding these factors may provide ideas for new therapeutic strategies for ED. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the S1PR2 receptor antagonist JTE-013 could improve DM-induced ED (DMED) in rats and to explore the potential mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used 50 male Sprague Dawley rats (8 weeks old) for this experiment. Type Ⅰ DM was induced in forty-two rats via streptozotocin administration; the rest of the rats served as controls. Eight weeks after DM induction, rats with ED were selected via an apomorphine test. Eight of them were injected intraperitoneally with JTE-013 each day for 4 weeks. The rest were fed under the same conditions for 4 weeks. Erectile function was measured by cavernous nerve electrostimulation. The expression levels of related signaling pathways were evaluated using Western blotting, real-time PCR, and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Erectile function was significantly impaired in the DMED group compared with the control group and was partially improved in the DMED + JTE-013 group. The expression of S1PR2 and the activity of the RhoA/ROCK/phospho-myosin phosphatase target subunit 1 (p-MYPT1) pathway proteins were higher in the DMED group than in the other two groups, and JTE-013 treatment significantly reduced the expression/activity of these proteins. Furthermore, the DMED group showed severe corporal fibrosis, a higher apoptotic index and increased activity in the TGF-ß1/LIMK2/Cofilin pathway compared with the control group. JTE-013 supplementation significantly ameliorated these pathological changes. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: JTE-013 supplementation partially improved erectile function in rats with DMED, likely by inhibiting smooth muscle contraction, corporal fibrosis, and apoptosis.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to perform a critical review of published data on the epidemiological, aetiological, clinical, histological, biological, and therapeutic characteristics of patients with angina bullosa haemorrhagica (ABH). A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. All publications fulfilling the selection criteria were included in the eligibility assessment according to the PRISMA statement. The full texts of 54 retrieved articles were screened. Forty articles published between 1985 and 2016 describing 225 cases of ABH were finally selected. The mean age of the patients was 55.4 years; the male to female ratio was 0.7. The predominant localization was the palate (66%). A third of patients had no medical history. When specified, a triggering event or promoting factor was frequently found (82%). Biological tests were normal. A biopsy was performed on 35% of the patients. Treatment was symptomatic with a favourable outcome. Recurrences were frequent (62%). In conclusion, ABH is poorly documented and only by studies of low-level evidence. This review did not allow any aetiopathogenic association to be made with a general pathology or treatment. On the basis of this systematic review of the literature, diagnostic criteria aiming to improve the care of patients presenting with ABH are proposed.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The parotid duct (PD) is often involved in parotid gland diseases. A skin landmark could help the surgeon to locate its position. The parotid duct line (PDL) joins the tragus-antitragus point to the middle of the half upper lip. The aim of this study was to assess and scientifically validate this landmark. METHODS: A monocentric prospective anatomical, clinical and radiological study was conducted. Six fresh cadavers' PD were dissected. A subcutaneous flap was performed and the PD's position spotted by needle checking through the skin. 10 subjects with parotid obstructive symptoms were included for sialendoscopy, which light through the skin revealed the PDL's position. MRI was conducted on 20 PDs. The radiologist virtually drew the PDL and did a 3D reconstruction of the PD. The distance from the PDL to the PD was measured. RESULTS: Anatomical study: 2 PDs were on the PDL, 2 under and 2 over. Sialendoscopic study: 6 PDs were on the PDL (60%), 3 under and 1 over. MRI study: 13 over 20 PDs crossed the PDL (65%). Maximum mean distance from the PD was 10.44 mm [5.01-15.87] and minimum mean distance from the PD was 2.42 mm [0-5.75]. DISCUSSION: This study sought to assess the relevance of the PDL, which is not parallel to the PD that runs a «S-Shape¼ curve when crossing the PDL. It could be used when evaluating a potential ductal injury in trauma management and when locating proximal parotid lithiasis during sialendoscopy.

RESUMEN

The efficacy of tamsulosin in the treatment of chronic non-bacterial prostatitis was evaluated in a randomized clinical observation of 105 male outpatients conducted for 90 days. Patients were randomly divided into five groups (n = 21 per group) according to prostatitis type IIIA or IIIB and therapy regimens (tamsulosin, levofloxacin, or tamsulosin plus levofloxacin combination therapy). National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index scores, expressed prostatic massage test and urodynamic urethral pressure and urethral closure pressure tests were performed to evaluate clinical efficacy of the treatments. Scores for pain, urinary symptoms and quality of life were significantly improved by days 45 and 90 after all treatments in both prostatitis categories. Improvements in symptom scores in the combined treatment group were significantly superior to those in the single treatment groups. Tamsulosin and levofloxacin are both effective in the treatment of, and may have an additive effect in, the treatment of non-bacterial prostatitis.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Metastatic carcinoma of the colon is frequently encountered. In the literature, metastasis of malignant tumors in the buccal cavity are rare. They represent less than 1% of oral malignant lesions. OBSERVATION: We present a case of oral metastasis of colon adenocarcinoma in the mandible of a 62-year-old patient. The physical examination revealed a swelling in the mandibular symphysis associated with dental displacement. The panoramic X-ray showed significant bone lysis of the symphysis. The neoplastic tissue showed marked positivity for Cytokeratin 20 and CDX2, confirming the diagnosis of metastasis of the oral cavity from colorectal adenocarcinoma. DISCUSSION: Metastatic adenocarcinoma from the colon to the oral cavity are rare but should be included in the differential diagnosis of tumors in the oral cavity.

RESUMEN

Objective: To investigate the effect of ubiquitous mitochondrial creatine kinase 1(CKMT1) on the sensitivity of human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line CNE-1 to DDP. Methods: CNE-1 cells were transiently transfected with CKMT1 overexpression (CKMT1) or empty vector (EV). The growth curve and DDP IC50 were developed by MTT assay, plate clone formation assay was performed by gradient concentration of DDP treatment, cell cycle and apoptosis were detected by flow cytometry, levels of apoptosis related protein Bax/Bcl-2/C-PARP and the transcription factor p-STAT3-Tyr705 were detected by Western Blot. Results: The transfection efficiencies of CKMT1 and EV were more than 90% with a higher proliferation rate in the CKMT1-transfected cells. However, the CKMT1-transfected cells had a DDP IC50 of 2.76 µmol/L, which was significantly lower than that of 4.60 µmol/L in the EV-transfected cells (P<0.01). With the treatment of certain concentration of DDP, the CKMT1-transfected cells had a lower clone formation rate, the cell cycle arrested more obviously in G2/M phase, and the apoptosis rate was higher (P<0.01), with higher levels of Bax/C-PARP (P<0.05 or P<0.01), but lower levels of Bcl-2 (P<0.01) and p-STAT3-Tyr705 (P<0.01), compare with the EV-transfected cells. Conclusions: CKMT1 may inhibit the activation of STAT3, increasing the sensitivity of CNE-1 to chemotherapeutic drug DDP.

RESUMEN

Current models of adult haematopoiesis propose that haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) differentiate into common lymphoid (CLP) and common myeloid (CMP) progenitors and establish an early separation between myeloid and lymphoid lineages. Nevertheless, the developmental potential of CMP-associated B cells suggests the existence of alternate pathways for B lymphopoesis. The aim of this study was to compare the developmental and functional properties of CMP- and CLP-derived B cells. While both populations matured through pro-B cell and transitional B cell intermediates in the bone marrow and spleen, respectively, following transfer into irradiated mice, mature CMP- and CLP-derived B cells exhibit distinct functional responses. Specifically, CMP-derived B cells did not respond to mitogenic stimulation to the same degree as their CLP-derived counterparts and secrete lower levels of IgM and the inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10. Together, these data suggest the existence of multiple pathways for generating functionally distinct B cells from bone marrow precursors.
