BACKGROUND: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) were more susceptible to poor outcomes owing to respiratory muscle weakness and immunotherapy. Several studies conducted in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic reported higher mortality in patients with MG compared to the general population. This study aimed to investigate the clinical course and prognosis of COVID-19 in patients with MG and to compare these parameters between vaccinated and unvaccinated patients in South Korea. METHODS: This multicenter, retrospective study, which was conducted at 14 tertiary hospitals in South Korea, reviewed the medical records and identified MG patients who contracted COVID-19 between February 2022 and April 2022. The demographic and clinical characteristics associated with MG and vaccination status were collected. The clinical outcomes of COVID-19 infection and MG were investigated and compared between the vaccinated and unvaccinated patients. RESULTS: Ninety-two patients with MG contracted COVID-19 during the study. Nine (9.8%) patients required hospitalization, 4 (4.3%) of whom were admitted to the intensive care unit. Seventy-five of 92 patients were vaccinated before contracting COVID-19 infection, and 17 were not. During the COVID-19 infection, 6 of 17 (35.3%) unvaccinated patients were hospitalized, whereas 3 of 75 (4.0%) vaccinated patients were hospitalized (P < 0.001). The frequencies of ICU admission and mechanical ventilation were significantly lower in the vaccinated patients than in the unvaccinated patients (P = 0.019 and P = 0.032, respectively). The rate of MG deterioration was significantly lower in the vaccinated patients than in the unvaccinated patients (P = 0.041). Logistic regression after weighting revealed that the risk of hospitalization and MG deterioration after COVID-19 infection was significantly lower in the vaccinated patients than in the unvaccinated patients. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the clinical course and prognosis of patients with MG who contracted COVID-19 during the dominance of the omicron variant of COVID-19 may be milder than those at the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic when vaccination was unavailable. Vaccination may reduce the morbidity of COVID-19 in patients with MG and effectively prevent MG deterioration induced by COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND: Assessing and improving the quality of trauma care is crucial in modern trauma systems and centers. In Korea, evaluations of regional trauma centers are conducted annually to assess and improve trauma management quality. This includes using the Trauma and Injury Severity Score (TRISS) method to calculate the W-score and mortality Observed-to-Expected ratio (O:E ratio), which are used to evaluate the quality of care. We analyzed the potential for overestimation of the probability of survival using TRISS method for patients with neurotrauma, as well as the potential for errors when evaluating and comparing regional trauma centers. METHODS: We included patients who visited the regional trauma center between 2019 and 2021 and compared their probability of survival of the TRISS method, W-score, mortality O:E ratio, and misclassification rates. The patient groups were further subdivided into smaller subgroups based on age, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and Injury Severity Score, and comparisons were made between the neurotrauma and non-neurotrauma groups within each subgroup. RESULTS: A total of 4,045 patients were enrolled in the study, with 1,639 of them having neurotrauma. The neurotrauma patient group had a W-score of -0.68 and a mortality O:E ratio of 1.044. The misclassification rate was found to be 13.3%, and patients with a GCS of 8 or less had a higher misclassification rate of 37.4%. CONCLUSION: The limitations of using the TRISS method for predicting outcomes in patients with severe neurotrauma are exposed in this study. The TRISS methodology demonstrated a high misclassification rate of approximately 40% in subgroups of patients with GCS less than 9, indicating that it may be less reliable in predicting outcomes for severely injured patients with low GCS. Clinicians and researchers should be cautious when using the TRISS method and consider alternative methods to evaluate patient outcomes and compare the quality of care provided by different trauma centers.

We investigated the anticancer effect of the aptamer-conjugated gemcitabine-loaded atelocollagen patch in a pancreatic cancer patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model to propose a future potential adjuvant surgical strategy during curative pancreatic resection for pancreatic cancer. A pancreatic cancer PDX model was established. Animals were grouped randomly into a no-treatment control group; treatment group treated with intraperitoneal gemcitabine injection (IP-GEM) or aptamer-conjugated gemcitabine (APT:GEM); and transplant with three kinds of patches: atelocollagen-aptamer-gemcitabine (patch I), atelocollagen-inactive aptamer-gemcitabine (patch II), and atelocollagen-gemcitabine (patch III). Tumor volumes and response were evaluated based on histological analysis by H&E staining and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed. Anticancer therapy-related toxicity was evaluated by hematologic findings. The patch I group showed the most significant reduction of tumor growth rate, compared with the no-treatment group (p < 0.05). However, other treatment groups were not found to show significant reduction in tumor growth rate (0.05 < p < 0.1). There was no microscopic evidence suggesting potential toxicity, such as inflammation, nor necrotic changes in liver, lung, kidney, and spleen tissue. In addition, no leukopenia, anemia, or neutropenia was observed in the patch I group. This implantable aptamer-drug conjugate system is thought to be a new surgical strategy to augment the oncologic significance of margin-negative resection in treating pancreatic cancer in near future.

BACKGROUND: Astrocyte is a key regulator of neuronal activity and excitatory/inhibitory balance via gliotransmission. Recently, gliotransmission has been identified as a novel target for neurological diseases. However, using the properties of nanomaterials to modulate gliotransmission has not been uncovered. RESULTS: We prepared non-invasive CNT platforms for cells with different nanotopography and properties such as hydrophilicity and conductivity. Using CNT platforms, we investigated the effect of CNT on astrocyte functions participating in synaptic transmission by releasing gliotransmitters. Astrocytes on CNT platforms showed improved cell adhesion and proliferation with upregulated integrin and GFAP expression. In addition, intracellular GABA and glutamate in astrocytes were augmented on CNT platforms. We also demonstrated that gliotransmitters in brain slices were increased by ex vivo incubation with CNT. Additionally, intracellular resting Ca2+ level, which is important for gliotransmission, was also increased via TRPV1 on CNT platforms. CONCLUSION: CNT can improve astrocyte function including adhesion, proliferation and gliotransmission by increasing resting Ca2+ level. Therefore, our study suggests that CNT would be utilized as a new therapeutic platform for central nervous system diseases by modulating gliotransmission.

As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread worldwide, the rate of COVID-19 vaccination uptake is encouraging. Neurological complications associated with COVID-19 vaccines such as stroke, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and Bell's palsy have been reported. Recently, late-onset myasthenia gravis (MG) following COVID-19 vaccination has been reported. To date, however, there has been no evidence of increased risk of early-onset MG following COVID-19. Here, we report a case of a patient with new-onset MG that arose after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine. A 33-year-old woman suddenly experienced generalized weakness and diplopia on the evening she had received the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The temporal relationship suggests that this new-onset MG is related to the vaccination. It also implies that COVID-19 vaccination could trigger early-onset MG symptoms in patients at risk of MG.

Therapeutic iodoform (CHI3) is commonly used as a root-filling material for primary teeth; however, the side effects of iodoform-containing materials, including early root resorption, have been reported. To overcome this problem, a water-soluble iodide (NaI)-incorporated root-filling material was developed. Calcium hydroxide, silicone oil, and NaI were incorporated in different weight proportions (30:30:X), and the resulting material was denoted DX (D5~D30), indicating the NaI content. As a control, iodoform instead of NaI was incorporated at a ratio of 30:30:30, and the material was denoted I30. The physicochemical (flow, film thickness, radiopacity, viscosity, water absorption, solubility, and ion releases) and biological (cytotoxicity, TRAP, ARS, and analysis of osteoclastic markers) properties were determined. The amount of iodine, sodium, and calcium ion releases and the pH were higher in D30 than I30, and the highest level of unknown extracted molecules was detected in I30. In the cell viability test, all groups except 100% D30 showed no cytotoxicity. In the 50% nontoxic extract, D30 showed decreased osteoclast formation compared with I30. In summary, NaI-incorporated materials showed adequate physicochemical properties and low osteoclast formation compared to their iodoform-counterpart. Thus, NaI-incorporated materials may be used as a substitute for iodoform-counterparts in root-filling materials after further (pre)clinical investigation.

We fabricated a fiber-optic directional coupler based on evanescent field coupling between side-polished large mode area (LMA) double clad fibers (DCFs) for a high power fiber laser. The tapping ratio of the fabricated coupler was measured to be - 32 dB. The fundamental mode coupled in a core of the lower side-polished fiber (SPF) was transferred to the upper SPF without clad-mode coupling. Two SPFs were directly faced to increase an optical handling power up to 740 W. The tapping ratio of the coupler was constantly maintained at the applied laser output. The beam quality of the laser including the fabricated coupler was maintained to be 1.22, without mode distortion by the coupler.

The consumption of sprouts has been steadily increasing due to their being an excellent source of nutrition. It is known that the bioactive constituents of legumes can be increased after germination. In this study, the extract from Senna tora sprouts is shown to exhibit improved radical scavenging activities and better neuroprotective effects in HT22 hippocampal neuronal (HT22) and R28 retina precursor (R28) cells than those from seeds due to an increased content of phenolic constituents, especially compounds 1 and 3-6. A phytochemical investigation of S. tora sprouts resulted in the isolation of two new naphthopyrone glycosides (1-2) with 27 previously reported compounds. Their structures were determined via interpreting spectroscopic data. Compounds 1 and 3-6 were found to possess radical scavenging activities and neuroprotective effects against oxidative stress in both neuronal cells. Hence, Senna tora sprouts and their constituents may be developed as natural neuroprotective agents via antioxidative effects.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term autoimmune disorder that mostly affects the joints and leads to the destruction of cartilage. An RA model in non-human primates is especially useful because of their close phylogenetic relationship to humans in terms of cross-reactivity to compounds developed using modern drug technologies. METHODS: We used a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model in Macaca fascicularis. CIA was induced by the immunization of chicken type II collagen. Swelling was measured as the longitudinal and transverse axes of 16 proximal interphalangeal joints. RESULTS: A new system for visual evaluation was created, with a perfect score of 16. Individual behavioral analysis was also conducted. Serum was collected once a week after the first immunization. Blood chemistry and inflammatory cytokine parameters were higher in the CIA group than in the wild type group. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we established CIA in M. fascicularis, and the results can be used for drug evaluation models.

AIMS: Treatment with saikosaponin A (SSA)-an ingredient of the medicinal herb, Bupleurum falcatum-has been reported to suppress several addictive-like behaviors, including morphine, cocaine, alcohol and chocolate self-administration in male rats. The aim of this investigation was to investigate whether saikosaponins of B. falcatum other than SSA affect alcohol and chocolate self-administration in rats. METHODS: Ovariectomized female Sardinian alcohol-preferring (sP) and Wistar rats were trained to self-administer alcohol (15%, v/v) and a chocolate solution [5% (w/v) Nesquik® in water], respectively, under fixed ratio schedules of reinforcement. The following saikosaponins were compared to SSA: saikosaponin D (SSD; epimer of SSA), saikosaponin C (SSC), saikosaponin B2 (SSB2) and saikosaponin B4 (SSB4). All saikosaponins were tested acutely at the doses of 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg (i.p.). RESULTS: Treatment with SSA and SSD resulted in highly similar, marked reductions in alcohol self-administration; SSC failed to alter lever-responding for alcohol, while SSB2 and SSB4 produced intermediate reductions. Only SSA and SSD reduced chocolate self-administration, with SSC, SSB2 and SSB4 being ineffective. CONCLUSIONS: The wide spectrum of efficacy of saikosaponins in reducing alcohol and chocolate self-administration suggests that even relatively small structural differences are sufficient to produce remarkable changes in their in vivo pharmacological profile. Together, these results confirm that roots of B. falcatum may be an interesting source of compounds with anti-addictive potential.

PURPOSE: Cervical total disc replacement (TDR) aims to maintain normal cervical kinematics after surgery. This study investigates the relation between shifted location of centre of rotation (COR) and subsequent surgical outcomes after multilevel cervical TDR (MCTDR) and identifies radiological parameter that corresponded to this change of COR after MCTDR. METHODS: The study included a consecutive 24 patients treated with MCTDR following the diagnosis of multilevel cervical disc herniation or stenosis. Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), range of motion (ROM) at both C2-7 segment and TDR implanted levels, and location of COR at TDR level were evaluated at pre- and post-MCTDR. These parameters were compared between patients who experienced successful and unsuccessful pain relief. RESULTS: The inherent CORs relatively at ventro-cranial coordinates have demonstrated significant migrations to dorso-caudal location, more prominent shifts for the successful group, after MCTDR switch. The unsuccessful group showed markedly reduced C2-7 ROM and reduced angular improvement at C2-7 as well as MCTDR level in comparison with the successful group. Postoperative C2-7 ROM was related to postoperative COR along the X axis. CONCLUSION: The determinant for clinical success after MCTDR, other than mere preservation of the ROM both at C2-7 and TDR levels, was restoration of COR from ventro-cranial location close to normal coordinates by posterior and inferior shifts. The position of COR along the X axis after MCTDR was important factor to determine maintenance of C2-7 ROM.

Although organic-inorganic halide perovskite (OIHP)-based photovoltaics have high photoconversion efficiency (PCE), their poor humidity stability prevents commercialization. To overcome this critical hurdle, focusing on the grain boundary (GB) of OIHPs, which is the main humidity penetration channel, is crucial. Herein, pressure-induced crystallization of OIHP films prepared with controlled mold geometries is demonstrated as a GB-healing technique to obtain high moisture stability. When exposed to 85% RH at 30 °C, OIHP films fabricated by pressure-induced crystallization have enhanced moisture stability due to the enlarged OIHP grain size and low-angle GBs. The crystallographic and optical properties indicate the effect of applying pressure onto OIHP films in terms of moisture stability. The photovoltaic devices with pressure-induced crystallization exhibited dramatically stabilized performance and sustained over 0.95 normalized PCE after 200 h at 40% RH and 30 °C.

BACKGROUND: Genetic myopathy is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of genetic disorders characterized by progressive degeneration of skeletal muscles. Epidemiological studies of genetic myopathy have not yet been performed in Korea. OBJECTIVES: This study used data from the national health insurance claims database to determine the prevalence and socioeconomic status of patients with genetic myopathy in Korea. METHODS: We analyzed the Health Insurance Review and Assessment database from 2007 to 2011. Patients with genetic myopathy were defined based on diagnostic and procedure codes. We then evaluated the prevalence, types of health insurances, and medical expenses of these patients. RESULTS: During the 11-year study period, 2,988 patients with genetic myopathy were enrolled. Among them, 1,762 were men and 1,226 were women. The prevalence per 100,000 population in 2017 was 3.09 (3.94 for men and 2.24 for women). The prevalence of genetic myopathy among men <35 years old (8.33 per 100,000 population) was approximately twice that among women <35 years old (4.06 per 100,000 population). However, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of genetic myopathy among those ≥35 years old according to sex. The ratio of patients using medical aid among all genetic myopathy patients was approximately 4 times than that among the general population in Korea. The medical expenses per person for genetic myopathy increased from USD 2,027 in 2007 to USD 4,810 in 2017. CONCLUSIONS: Our study was the first nationwide epidemiologic study of the prevalence and socioeconomic status of patients with genetic myopathy in Korea. Our results confirmed a sex divergence in a younger population and those with low socioeconomic status among patients with genetic myopathy.

We experimentally demonstrate an all-fiber high-power fiber amplifier with high beam quality and a slope efficiency of 81.8%, using a fiber-Bragg-grating-stabilized laser diode as a narrow spectral linewidth (0.08 nm) seed source. During amplification, the spectral linewidth of the laser output is broadened from 0.08 to 0.24 nm due to nonlinear phenomena. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first experimental observation of the suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), with increased output power. In addition, we investigated the SBS suppression by simultaneously measuring the optical backscattered power, backscattered spectrum, and output spectrum at different values of output power. The beam quality, M2, was measured to be ∼1.28 at the maximum output power of 2.05 kW, and modal instability was not observed.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical outcomes remain unclear in patients suspected of having pancreatic cancer with indeterminate endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) results. This work aimed to investigate the prognosis of pancreatic cancer patients with indeterminate findings at initial EUS-FNA. METHODS: Findings in all patients who underwent EUS-FNA for suspected pancreatic cancer between 2008 and 2015 at the National Cancer Center, Korea, were retrospectively reviewed. A final diagnosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma was based on pathology reports. RESULTS: Of the 144 patients evaluated, 113 (78%) were diagnosed as being positive/suspicious for malignancy on cytological evaluation and 31 (22%) as having atypia/negative/non-diagnostic findings at initial EUS-FNA but subsequently diagnosed with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. Tumour size, clinical stage and treatment modalities did not differ significantly between these two groups. Median overall survival was significantly shorter in patients diagnosed (11.3 ± 0.74 months; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.4-12.8 months) than non-diagnosed (16.9 ± 2.34 months; 95% CI, 12.0-17.4 months) on initial EUS-FNA (P = .024). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that a non-diagnosis on initial EUS-FNA was independently associated with better overall survival (hazard ratio, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.38-0.88; P = .011). CONCLUSIONS: Non-diagnostic results on initial EUS-FNA of a primary mass may be associated with better prognosis in patients with pancreatic cancer.

BACKGROUND: The lack of medical personnel has led to the employment of hospitalists in Korean hospitals to provide high-quality medical care. However, whether hospitalists' care can improve patients' outcomes remains unclear. We aimed to analyze the outcome in patients cared for by hospitalists. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted in 1,015 patients diagnosed with pneumonia or urinary tract infection from March 2017 to July 2018. After excluding 306 patients, 709 in the general ward who were admitted via the emergency department were enrolled, including 169 and 540 who were cared for by hospitalists (HGs) and non-hospitalists (NHGs), respectively. We compared the length of hospital stay (LOS), in-hospital mortality, readmission rate, comorbidity, and disease severity between the two groups. Comorbidities were analyzed using Charlson comorbidity index (CCI). RESULTS: HG LOS (median, interquartile range [IQR], 8 [5-12] days) was lower than NHG LOS (median [IQR], 10 [7-15] days), (P < 0.001). Of the 30 (4.2%) patients who died during their hospital stay, a lower percentage of HG patients (2.4%) than that of NHG patients (4.8%) died, but the difference between the two groups was not significant (P = 0.170). In a subgroup analysis, HG LOS was shorter than NHG LOS (median [IQR], 8 [5-12] vs. 10 [7-16] days, respectively, P < 0.001) with CCI of ≥ 5 points. CONCLUSION: Hospitalist care can improve the LOS of patients, especially those with multiple comorbidities. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the impact of hospitalist care in Korea.

Radiographic measurements of the hallux valgus (HV) angle (HVA) and the first intermetatarsal angle (IMA1-2) are important for assessing the severity of HV. The purpose of the present study was to digitally investigate the intraobserver and interobserver reliability of various methods for measuring HVA and IMA1-2, as well as each axis composing them, such as axes of the first proximal phalanx (PP1), the first metatarsal (MT1), and the second metatarsal (MT2) in patients with a metatarsal shaft osteotomy-modified long oblique osteotomy. Three orthopedic surgeons measured the HVA, IMA1-2, and the angles between axes of PP1, MT1, and MT2, and the digitally-set reference line (α, ß, and γ, respectively) using 6 different methods for 39 patients with a minimum of 1 year of follow-up after operative treatment. The intraobserver and interobserver intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and agreements were calculated. Significant differences were observed within the methods with regard to preoperative HVA, IMA1-2, α, and ß, and postoperative IMA1-2 and ß. Intraobserver and interobserver ICC were high or very high in most methods. For HVA and IMA1-2, the method connecting the center of the head through the center of the base showed the highest agreement. For α, ß, and γ, this method showed the highest agreement, more than 80% intraobserver and interobserver agreement and a discrepancy of <2°. A digital method connecting the center of the head through the center of the base was regarded as the least variable for the HV evaluation and the assessment of the radiographic results in a metatarsal shaft osteotomy-modified long oblique osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: The effects of obesity on prognosis in gastric cancer are controversial. AIMS: To evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in patients with gastric cancer. METHODS: A single-institution cohort of 7765 patients with gastric cancer undergoing curative gastrectomy between October 2000 and June 2016 was categorized into six groups based on BMI: underweight (< 18.5 kg/m2), normal (18.5 to < 23 kg/m2), overweight (23 to < 25 kg/m2), mildly obese (25 to < 28 kg/m2), moderately obese (28 to < 30 kg/m2), and severely obese (≥ 30 kg/m2). Hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were calculated using Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS: We identified 1279 (16.5%) all-cause and 763 (9.8%) disease-specific deaths among 7765 patients over 83.05 months (range 1.02-186.97) median follow-up. In multivariable analyses adjusted for statistically significant clinicopathological characteristics, preoperative BMI was associated with OS in a non-linear pattern. Compared with normal-weight patients, underweight patients had worse OS [HR 1.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.77], whereas overweight (HR 0.84; 95% CI 0.73-0.97), mildly obese (HR 0.77; 95% CI 0.66-0.90), and moderately obese (HR 0.77; 95% CI 0.59-1.01) patients had better OS. DSS exhibited a similar pattern, with lowest mortality in moderately obese patients (HR 0.58; 95% CI 0.39-0.85). Spline analysis showed the lowest all-cause mortality risk at a BMI of 26.67 kg/m2. CONCLUSION: In patients undergoing curative gastric cancer surgery, those who were overweight or mildly-to-moderately obese (BMI 23 to < 30 kg/m2) preoperatively had better OS and DSS than normal-weight patients.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and related metabolic disorders are growing health challenges worldwide and individuals at military service are not exceptions. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) in the Korean military and to compare with the general population. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study of 4,803 young military participants who underwent a corporal health-screening program between October 2013 and October 2014. The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria was used to identify MS. We also sampled 1,108 men aged 19-29 years from the Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey from 2010 to 2013 to compare with their military counterparts. RESULTS: The mean age of military participants was 20.8 ± 1.1 years, and 20.6% (n = 988) were obese. The prevalence of MS was 0.8% in military participants, while 7.9% in general population. The risk factors of MS were less prominent among military participants relative to civilians, with the exception of high blood pressure, of which prevalence was higher among military participants (21.5% vs. 18.2%, respectively). In multiple logistic analysis, high physical activity conferred lower odds of MS and obesity in military participants (odds ratios, 0.19 and 0.81, respectively). Age older than 25 years increased risk of most components of MS among civilians. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of obesity and MS is lower in military participants compared with civilians of similar age. Monitoring of high blood pressure and proper stress management are warranted in those at military service.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Acrylic resin materials for interim restoration may adversely affect pulp tissue during the polymerization phase. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the cytotoxic and proinflammatory cytokine production effects induced by interim resin materials in primary cultured human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five interim resin materials were evaluated: 3 types of chemically activated products, 1 light-activated product, and 1 computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) product. After obtaining eluates from interim resin materials that either were in the process of polymerizing or were already polymerized, these extracts were cocultured with hDPCs under serially diluted conditions (50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, and 3.125%) for 24 hours with positive (1% phenol) and negative (distilled water) controls. A cell viability assay with tetrazolium was used to evaluate toxic effects on the cells, and images of both live and dead cells were captured using confocal microscopy. Proinflammatory cytokine levels were measured using cytokine antibody arrays. All experiments were independently repeated 3 times, and data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey honest significant differences test (α=.05). RESULTS: Cell viabilities less than 70% were observed from the eluates of the 3 chemically activated products under the 50% conditions. Among the chemically activated products, the adverse effects were significantly greater with eluates derived from the polymerizing phase compared than those that had already polymerized, as shown by confocal microscopy images of live and dead cells. However, the light-activated and CAD-CAM-fabricated products did not adversely affect the hDPCs. Significantly increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines were not detected in 12.5% of extract from polymerizing compared with distilled water control. CONCLUSIONS: The 50% eluates derived from chemically activated interim resin during the polymerizing phase were cytotoxic to hDPCs and may adversely affect pulp tissue. Recommendations such as excess washing are necessary during fabrication.
