BACKGROUND: Online health communities (OHCs) have increasingly gained traction with patients, caregivers, and supporters globally. Chinese OHCs are no exception. However, user-generated content (UGC) and the associated user behaviors in Chinese OHCs are largely underexplored and rarely analyzed systematically, forfeiting valuable opportunities for optimizing treatment design and care delivery with insights gained from OHCs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to reveal both the shared and distinct characteristics of 2 popular OHCs in China by systematically and comprehensively analyzing their UGC and the associated user behaviors. METHODS: We concentrated on studying the lung cancer forum (LCF) and breast cancer forum (BCF) on Mijian, and the diabetes consultation forum (DCF) on Sweet Home, because of the importance of the 3 diseases among Chinese patients and their prevalence on Chinese OHCs in general. Our analysis explored the key user activities, small-world effect, and scale-free characteristics of each social network. We examined the UGC of these forums comprehensively and adopted the weighted knowledge network technique to discover salient topics and latent relations among these topics on each forum. Finally, we discussed the public health implications of our analysis findings. RESULTS: Our analysis showed that the number of reads per thread on each forum followed gamma distribution (HL=0, HB=0, and HD=0); the number of replies on each forum followed exponential distribution (adjusted RL2=0.946, adjusted RB2=0.958, and adjusted RD2=0.971); and the number of threads a user is involved with (adjusted RL2=0.978, adjusted RB2=0.964, and adjusted RD2=0.970), the number of followers of a user (adjusted RL2=0.989, adjusted RB2=0.962, and adjusted RD2=0.990), and a user's degrees (adjusted RL2=0.997, adjusted RB2=0.994, and adjusted RD2=0.968) all followed power-law distribution. The study further revealed that users are generally more active during weekdays, as commonly witnessed in all 3 forums. In particular, the LCF and DCF exhibited high temporal similarity (ρ=0.927; P<.001) in terms of the relative thread posting frequencies during each hour of the day. Besides, the study showed that all 3 forums exhibited the small-world effect (mean σL=517.15, mean σB=275.23, and mean σD=525.18) and scale-free characteristics, while the global clustering coefficients were lower than those of counterpart international OHCs. The study also discovered several hot topics commonly shared among the 3 disease forums, such as disease treatment, disease examination, and diagnosis. In particular, the study found that after the outbreak of COVID-19, users on the LCF and BCF were much more likely to bring up COVID-19-related issues while discussing their medical issues. CONCLUSIONS: UGC and related online user behaviors in Chinese OHCs can be leveraged as important sources of information to gain insights regarding individual and population health conditions. Effective and timely mining and utilization of such content can continuously provide valuable firsthand clues for enhancing the situational awareness of health providers and policymakers.

Background: As a fatal disease, cytokine storm has garnered research attention in recent years. Nonetheless, as the body of related studies expands, a thorough and impartial evaluation of the current status of research on cytokine storms remains absent. Consequently, this study aimed to thoroughly explore the research landscape and evolution of cytokine storm utilizing bibliometric and knowledge graph approaches. Methods: Research articles and reviews centered on cytokine storms were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. For bibliometric analysis, tools such as Excel 365, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the Bibliometrix R package were utilized. Results: This bibliometric analysis encompassed 6647 articles published between 2004 and 2022. The quantity of pertinent articles and citation frequency exhibited a yearly upward trend, with a sharp increase starting in 2020. Network analysis of collaborations reveals that the United States holds a dominant position in this area, boasting the largest publication count and leading institutions. Frontiers in Immunology ranks as the leading journal for the largest publication count in this area. Stephan A. Grupp, a prominent researcher in this area, has authored the largest publication count and has the second-highest citation frequency. Research trends and keyword evaluations show that the connection between cytokine storm and COVID-19, as well as cytokine storm treatment, are hot topics in research. Furthermore, research on cytokine storm and COVID-19 sits at the forefront in this area. Conclusion: This study employed bibliometric analysis to create a visual representation of cytokine storm research, revealing current trends and burgeoning topics in this area for the first time. It will provide valuable insights, helping scholars pinpoint critical research areas and potential collaborators.

Plants lack behavioral responses to avoid dramatic environmental changes associated with the annual seasons. For survival, they have evolved complex sensory systems to sense fluctuations in light and optimize their architecture in response to changes in these cues. Phytochrome A (phyA) was initially identified as a photoreceptor that senses far-red light signals. It was then identified as playing a central role in promoting hypocotyl growth, fiber development, and flowering time in a variety of plants including Arabidopsis, rice, soybean and cotton. Under dark conditions, phyA is present in the cytoplasm in the physiologically inactive (Pr) form. Far-red light signals induce the transformation of Pr into the physiologically active (Pfr) form, after which Pfr-phyA is recognized by FAR-RED ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 1 (FHY1) and FHY1-LIKE (FHL) and translocated to the nucleus, initiating a series of signaling cascades. The current review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in understanding the function of phyA in plants, including phyA-mediated shade avoidance and flowering time. Remaining issues and possible directions for future research on phyA are also discussed.

Ultrasonic impregnation has proven to be an effective method to improve surface area and pore volume during preparation of activated carbons. However, the mechanism by which the promotion effect of ultrasonic impregnation is still ambiguous. Fundamental wave pressure (FWP) and broadband integrated pressure (BIP) were used to estimate the non-cavitation (vibration) energy and cavitation energy, respectively. The effects of FWP and BIP on the pore volume, surface area, surface functional groups, and microcosmic morphology were investigated in non-cavitation and cavitation regimes. Ultrasonic vibration promoted the surface enlargement and pore development of activated carbons, and it mainly affected the development of mesopore volume (Vmes) in both the pore volume and the mesopore-size-distribution range. The Vmes was enhanced by 60%-100% in the non-cavitation regime. Ultrasonic cavitation also facilitated porosity development of activated carbons, and it mainly affected the development of specific surface area (SBET) and micropore volume (Vmic). The excessive cavitation led to a decrease of the porosity of activated carbons, so the BIP should be optimized during impregnation. The highest SBET, Vmic, and Vmes for activated carbons were obtained by in the presence of both FWP and BIP, which were enhanced by 29.05%, 30.23%, and 113.33%, respectively, compared with the corresponding value for the activated carbon prepared without using ultrasonic impregnation. This work provided new insight into the role of the acoustic energy present during impregnation in tuning properties of activated carbons.

Acoustic field intensity and distribution are the most important factors for the efficiency of ultrasonic processing. Recent simulation studies suggested that sound direction could influence both acoustic field intensity and distribution, but this influence has scarcely been investigated experimentally so far. In this work, we systematically studied the influence of sound directions on the acoustic field with up to five directions via both simulation and experiment. Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) harmonic response simulation and aluminum foil erosion experiment were employed to study the acoustic field under different directional combinations of ultrasonic sources. Results of simulation coincided well with that of experiment, which indicated that acoustic intensity, uniformity and cavitation characteristics were significantly affected by sound directions. Based on the results, several influence rules of sound directions were proposed. Optimal acoustic field with sound intensity of 30 times higher than that of single-wall excitation and severe cavitation volume of 95% was obtained. This work provides useful guidelines for acoustic field design of high-intensity ultrasonic apparatus.
