RESUMEN

Understanding dynamic variations of ecosystem services (ESs) and their tradeoff-synergy relations under ecological water replenishment (EWR) is conducive to the formulation of effective eco-environmental management strategies. In this study, spatiotemporal variations of three leading ESs, namely habitat quality, carbon storage and water yield services influenced by EWR in Baiyangdian Lake, North China from 1991 to 2019, were investigated using the "Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs" (InVEST) model, and their tradeoff-synergy relations were quantitatively assessed with correlation analysis methods. Our results showed that habitat quality had continuously declined, whereas it got a steady improvement after the year of 2015. Total carbon storage was relatively stable, and the volume of total water yield and precipitation showed the same variation trend. Overall, EWR promoted the maintenance and improvement of ESs. Tradeoff-synergy relations among ESs varied with time and space. Temporally, there was an obvious synergistic relation between habitat quality and carbon storage services. Spatially, these two ESs were synergistic in the southern, central and eastern parts of the lake, while they had a tradeoff relation in the north; and there were no tradeoff-synergy relations between the water yield service and these two services. This study confirmed the importance of zoning management and comprehensive multi-factor management based on spatial and temporal differences of ESs, and can offer a scientific basis for adaptive eco-environmental management strategies for wetland restoration.

BACKGROUND: Outcome data of doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect closure in adults are limited. METHODS: A review was made of the inpatients >18 years of age who underwent doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect closure between June 2010 and June 2017. RESULTS: The patients were categorised into two groups: The valve intervention group consisted of 31 patients who underwent aortic valvuloplasty, aortic valve replacement, or repair of sinus Valsalva aneurysm in addition to doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect closure; non-valvular intervention group comprised 58 patients who underwent only doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect closure. The groups did not differ by sex and age. Patients in the valve intervention group, with a larger ventricular septal defect size, were shorter and tended to be lighter. The valve intervention group had more patients with pneumonia perioperatively. No infective endocarditis and reoperation were noted during the study period. At last follow-up, 91 and 96.6% of the studied patients were free from left ventricle dilation and pulmonary hypertension. In patients without pre-operative aortic regurgitation, 12 developed new mild aortic regurgitation during the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: About 34.8% of adult patients with doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect required concurrent intervention on aortic valve or sinus Valsalva aneurysm. The midterm results of doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect closure in adult patients were favourable. However, the incidence of new mild aortic regurgitation after ventricular septal defect closure was high (27.3%). Long-term follow-up of aortic regurgitation progression is needed.

N,N-dimethylsphingosine (DMS) has been documented to be in vitro protective against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and can recruit CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells (Tregs), which may participate in the cardioprotection. We hypothesized that when in vivo applied after a myocardial ischemia, DMS may be cardioprotective by recruiting Tregs. Myocardial IRI was induced in C57BL/6 mice by occluding the left main coronary arteries followed by relaxation, and DMS (0.43 mg/kg) was intravenously injected 5 min after the onset of ischemia. We found that in wild-type (WT) mice, compared with the ischemia-reperfusion group, DMS reduced the infarct size (47.1 ± 8.9 vs. 33.1 ± 3.4 %, p < 0.01), and neutrophil infiltration at 24 h reperfusion (R) evaluated by TTC and immunohistochemical staining, respectively, and increased the aggregation of Tregs [(6 ± 1)/mm(2) vs. (30 ± 4)/mm(2), p < 0.01], peaking at 1 h R by immunofluorescence staining, with reduced gene expression of inflammatory factors at 4 h R in the reperfused myocardium by real-time PCR. This protection was abolished by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt inhibitor or Tregs-depleting antibody. Relative to WT mice, the cardioprotection conferred by T cell- and B cell- deficient Rag2 knockout (KO) mice was not strengthened by DMS or by DMS and the adoptive transfer of Tregs from WT mice, but was abolished by DMS and WT non-Tregs and was recaptured by the cotransfer with WT Tregs but not with Akt1(+/-) mice-derived Tregs. In conclusion, applied at an early stage of ischemia, DMS may be in vivo protective against myocardial IRI by recruiting Tregs via PI3K/Akt pathway.

The quantitative evaluation of wetland hydrological connectivity is essential to the hydrological connectivity restoration-oriented ecological conservation and environmental management of wetlands. We proposed a framework to evaluate wetland hydrological connectivity with a combination of hydrological connectivity metrics and morphological spatial pattern analysis and recognized potential sites and links that had been generally overlooked in previous studies. Variations in hydrological connectivity revealed a decreasing trend followed by a gradual recovery from the critical time node of 2005 in Baiyangdian Lake. The core, one of the most important landscape types, played a dominant role in maintaining wetland hydrological connectivity at both temporal and spatial scales, and its variations matched those of hydrological connectivity. More importantly, we redressed the conventional ignorance of peripheral patches and links and recognized their importance in improving the hydrological connectivity of wetlands. The proposed framework provides an effective and practical tool for the hydrological connectivity evaluation of wetlands, expanding new insights into maintaining the health and integrity of wetland ecosystems. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the long-term outcomes of perventricular device occlusion and surgical repair for doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect using propensity score matched analysis because previous comparative studies were limited by differences in the baseline characteristics. METHODS: We reviewed inpatients with isolated doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect aged <18 years who underwent surgical repair or device occlusion between January 2011 and December 2017. Propensity score matching was used to assemble a cohort of patients with similar baseline characteristics. RESULTS: A total of 336 patients underwent surgical repair; 99 underwent device occlusion. After matching, the repair group included 164 patients, whereas the device group had 91 patients. There were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics. The median follow-up periods were 46 and 58 months for the device and repair groups, respectively. No significant difference was noted in the rates of cumulative adverse events in the 2 groups (7.9% vs 5.5%; P = 0.61). The repair group required longer periods of hospitalization (P = 0.002) and mechanical ventilation (P = 0.016). No grade 3 or higher valvular regurgitation or high-degree atrioventricular block events were observed. All patients were in sinus rhythm at the last follow-up examination. CONCLUSIONS: In selected patients with doubly committed subarterial ventricular septal defect, compared with conventional repair, perventricular device occlusion has comparable efficacy and safety, less invasiveness in terms of time in the hospital and on mechanical ventilation and avoidance of cardiopulmonary bypass.
