RESUMEN

In plant cells, mitochondria are ideally positioned to sense and balance changes in energy metabolism in response to changing environmental conditions. Retrograde signaling from mitochondria to the nucleus is crucial for adjusting the required transcriptional responses. We show that ANAC017, the master regulator of mitochondrial stress, directly recruits a signaling cascade involving the plant hormones ethylene and auxin as well as the MAP KINASE KINASE (MKK) 9-MAP KINASE (MPK) 3/6 pathway in Arabidopsis thaliana. Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by sequencing and overexpression demonstrated that ANAC017 directly regulates several genes of the ethylene and auxin pathways, including MKK9, 1-AMINO-CYCLOPROPANE-1-CARBOXYLATE SYNTHASE 2, and YUCCA 5, in addition to genes encoding transcription factors regulating plant growth and stress responses such as BASIC REGION/LEUCINE ZIPPER MOTIF (bZIP) 60, bZIP53, ANAC081/ATAF2, and RADICAL-INDUCED CELL DEATH1. A time-resolved RNA-seq experiment established that ethylene signaling precedes the stimulation of auxin signaling in the mitochondrial stress response, with a large part of the transcriptional regulation dependent on ETHYLENE-INSENSITIVE 3. These results were confirmed by mutant analyses. Our findings identify the molecular components controlled by ANAC017, which integrates the primary stress responses to mitochondrial dysfunction with whole plant growth via the activation of regulatory and partly antagonistic feedback loops.

Seeds are a vital source of calories for humans and a unique stage in the life cycle of flowering plants. During seed germination, the embryo undergoes major developmental transitions to become a seedling. Studying gene expression in individual seed cell types has been challenging due to the lack of spatial information or low throughput of existing methods. To overcome these limitations, a spatial transcriptomics workflow was developed for germinating barley grain. This approach enabled high-throughput analysis of spatial gene expression, revealing specific spatial expression patterns of various functional gene categories at a sub-tissue level. This study revealed over 14 000 genes differentially regulated during the first 24 h after imbibition. Individual genes, such as the aquaporin gene family, starch degradation, cell wall modification, transport processes, ribosomal proteins and transcription factors, were found to have specific spatial expression patterns over time. Using spatial autocorrelation algorithms, we identified auxin transport genes that had increasingly focused expression within subdomains of the embryo over time, suggesting their role in establishing the embryo axis. Overall, our study provides an unprecedented spatially resolved cellular map for barley germination and identifies specific functional genomics targets to better understand cellular restricted processes during germination. Fungal infections caused by Candida species pose a serious threat to humankind. Antibiotics abuse and the ability of Candida species to form biofilm have escalated the emergence of drug resistance in clinical settings and hence, rendered it more difficult to treat Candida-related diseases. Lethal effects of Candida infection are often due to inefficacy of antimicrobial treatments and failure of host immune response to clear infections. Previous studies have shown that a combination of riboflavin with UVA (riboflavin/UVA) light demonstrate candidacidal activity albeit its mechanism of actions remain elusive. Thus, this study sought to investigate antifungal and antibiofilm properties by combining riboflavin with UVA against Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida species. The MIC20 for the fluconazole and riboflavin/UVA against the Candida species tested was within the range of 0.125-2 µg/mL while the SMIC50 was 32 µg/mL. Present findings indicate that the inhibitory activities exerted by riboflavin/UVA towards planktonic cells are slightly less effective as compared to controls. However, the efficacy of the combination towards Candida species biofilms showed otherwise. Inhibitory effects exerted by riboflavin/UVA towards most of the tested Candida species biofilms points towards a variation in mode of action that could make it an ideal alternative therapeutic for biofilm-related infections.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the olfactory acuity and quality of life in patients who have undergone total laryngectomy. The study also aims to identify any specific patient-related risk factors linked to worse olfactory outcomes. METHODS: This is a prospective cross-sectional study conducted at the University Malaya Medical Centre. A total of 30 patients who have undergone total laryngectomy were assessed objectively using the Sniffin' Sticks test and compared against normal age-matched Malaysians. Subsequently, they also filled out the modified Questionnaire on Olfactory Disorders. Correlations of patient demographics, disease and treatment variables against olfactory outcomes were conducted. RESULTS: All subjects suffered olfactory impairment, with 66.7% of them being anosmic after total laryngectomy. The Sniffin' Sticks test demonstrated a statistically significant difference between laryngectomees and the normal age-matched Malaysian population in all three subtests for odor threshold, discrimination and identification. 37% of patients developed olfactory adaptive methods, which resulted in higher olfactory scores and a better quality of life. There were no patient demographics, disease or treatment variables associated with a poorer olfactory outcome identified. CONCLUSION: Olfactory impairment should not be overlooked among patients after total laryngectomy. Although as many as a third of patients developed some sort of olfactory adaptive behavior, early rehabilitation should be integrated into the multidisciplinary rehabilitation program after total laryngectomy.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous disorder involving multi-systemic organs. Patients invariably have lung involvement but some may have extrapulmonary disease. Rarely, cervical lymphadenopathy is the only sign without mediastinal or pulmonary abnormalities. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a Malay male who complained of neck swelling exclusively. On imaging, multiple enlarged cervical lymph nodes deep to the sternocleidomastoid muscle were seen. An excision biopsy revealed non-caseating granulomas with epithelioid macrophages. Extensive investigations led to the diagnosis of isolated cervical lymph node sarcoidosis. CONCLUSIONS: Sarcoidosis can present as cervical lymphadenopathy alone, without mediastinal or lung disease. The presence of epithelioid granulomas on histopathology warrants the exclusion of other granulomatous diseases. Isolated cervical lymph node sarcoidosis is only diagnosed in the presence of consistent clinical and radiological findings. In this case, close monitoring for systemic sarcoidosis is important as it can manifest later in life.

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with auditory dysfunction both to the cochlear and higher auditory pathways. However, available literatures presented conflicting results. We aimed to study the impact of OSA severity and their polysomnography parameters on hearing function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 44 patients were included after evaluation for sleep disorders and were divided into four groups in accordance with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Pure tone audiometry (PTA), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) were compared in commensurate with the severity of AHI. Polysomnography oximetry parameters of oxygen desaturation index, mean SPO2, minimum SPO2 and percent SPO2 < 90% were correlated with their respective PTA, DPOAE and ABR results. RESULTS: There was no significant change in the PTA, DPOAE and ABR results in connection with AHI severity. However, we found significant correlations between mean SPO2 and percent SPO2 < 90% with ABR wave I, III and V absolute latencies. Minimum SPO2 was also significantly correlated with wave III peak latency changes. CONCLUSIONS: Mean SPO2, percent SPO2 < 90% and minimum SPO2 could be key prognostic indicators of central auditory dysfunction in OSA patients. These parameters should be explored further as indicators of OSA severity rather than utilizing AHI alone. The hypoxic burden derived could be a better predictor of auditory function abnormalities rather than one derived from AHI.

In this study, density functional theory (DFT) was used to investigate the influence of temperature on the performance of a novel Cu-nitrogen-doped graphene Cu2-N8/Gr nanocomposite as a catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell applications. Our DFT calculations, conducted using Gaussian 09w with the 3-21G/B3LYP basis set, focus on the Cu-nitrogen-doped graphene nanocomposite cathode catalyst, exploring its behavior at three distinct temperatures: 298.15 K, 353.15 K, and 393.15 K, under acidic conditions. Our analysis of formation energies indicates that the structural stability of the catalyst remains unaffected as the temperature varies within the potential range of 0-7.21 V. Notably, the stability of the ORR steps experiences a marginal decrease with increasing temperature, with the exception of the intermediate OH + H2O (*OH + H + *OH). Interestingly, the optimization reveals the absence of single OH and H2O intermediates during the reactions. Furthermore, the OH + H2O step is optimized to form the OH + H + OH intermediate, featuring the sharing of a hydrogen atom between dual OH intermediates. Free energy calculations elucidate that the catalyst supports spontaneous ORR at all temperatures. The highest recorded maximum cell potential, 0.69 V, is observed at 393.15 K, while the lowest, 0.61 V, is recorded at 353.15 K. In particular, the Cu2-N8/Gr catalyst structure demonstrates a reduced favorability for the H2O2 generation at all temperatures, resulting in the formation of dual OH intermediates rather than H2O2. In conclusion, at 393.15 K, Cu2-N8/Gr exhibits enhanced catalyst performance compared to 353.15 K and 298.15 K, making it a promising candidate for ORR catalysis in fuel cell applications.

Retained surgical sponges or gauzes (RSS) are an uncommon complication of exploratory laparotomy surgery and pose a clinically significant risk to the patient. The purpose of this two-part, prospective, descriptive study was to describe the previously uncharacterized ultrasonographic appearance of RSS in phantom and cadaveric models of the acute postoperative period (24-48 h). For the first part of the study, a gelatin phantom containing a woven gauze with a radiopaque marker (radiopaque gauze), a woven gauze with no marker (nonradiopaque gauze), and a laparotomy sponge with a radiopaque marker (radiopaque sponge) was evaluated with ultrasonography. For the second part of the study, a total of 23 gauzes and sponges (of the aforementioned three types) were placed within the peritoneal cavity of 20 cadavers in one of three randomized locations during an exploratory laparotomy laboratory. The cadavers were imaged with ultrasonography 17 h later and still images and video clips were reviewed. The retained surgical sponges and gauzes in the gelatin phantom displayed multiple hyperechoic layers and variable degrees of distal acoustic shadowing. In cadavers, 100% (23/23) of the retained surgical sponges and gauzes displayed a single hyperechoic layer of variable thickness and distal acoustic shadowing. In 95.6% (22/23) retained sponges and gauzes, there was a thin hypoechoic layer noted superficially to the hyperechoic layer. An improved understanding of the ultrasonographic appearance of retained sponges or gauzes in the acute postoperative period may assist in the identification of these objects.

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This deadly virus has spread worldwide, leading to a global pandemic since March 2020. A recent variant of SARS-CoV-2 named Delta is intractably contagious and responsible for more than four million deaths globally. Therefore, developing an efficient self-testing service for SARS-CoV-2 at home is vital. In this study, a two-stage vision-based framework, namely Fruit-CoV, is introduced for detecting SARS-CoV-2 infections through recorded cough sounds. Specifically, audio signals are converted into Log-Mel spectrograms, and the EfficientNet-V2 network is used to extract their visual features in the first stage. In the second stage, 14 convolutional layers extracted from the large-scale Pretrained Audio Neural Networks for audio pattern recognition (PANNs) and the Wavegram-Log-Mel-CNN are employed to aggregate feature representations of the Log-Mel spectrograms and the waveform. Finally, the combined features are used to train a binary classifier. In this study, a dataset provided by the AICovidVN 115M Challenge is employed for evaluation. It includes 7,371 recorded cough sounds collected throughout Vietnam, India, and Switzerland. Experimental results indicate that the proposed model achieves an Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) score of 92.8% and ranks first on the final leaderboard of the AICovidVN 115M Challenge. Our code is publicly available.

Acclimation of plants to adverse conditions requires the coordination of gene expression and signalling pathways between tissues and cell types. As the energy and carbon capturing organs, leaves are significantly affected by abiotic and biotic stresses. However, tissue- or cell type-specific analyses of stress responses have focussed on the Arabidopsis root. Here, we comparatively explore the transcriptomes of three leaf tissues (epidermis, mesophyll, vasculature) after induction of diverse stress pathways by chemical stimuli (antimycin A, 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole, methyl viologen, salicylic acid) and ultraviolet light in Arabidopsis using laser capture microdissection followed by RNA sequencing. Stimulation of stress pathways caused an overall reduction in the number of genes expressed in a tissue-specific manner, though a small subset gained or changed their tissue specificity. We find no evidence of a common stress response, with only a few genes consistently responsive to two or more treatments in the analysed tissues. However, differentially expressed genes overlap between tissues for individual treatments. A focussed analysis provided evidence for an interaction of auxin and ethylene that mediates retrograde signalling during mitochondrial dysfunction specifically in the epidermis, and a gene regulatory network defined the hierarchy of interactions. Taken together, we have generated an extensive reference dataset that will be valuable for future experiments analysing transcriptional responses on a tissue or single-cell level. Our results will enable the tailoring of the tissue-specific engineering of stress-tolerant plants.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled dark nudges by leading global food and beverage companies to influence consumer behaviour. DESIGN: The five most recent annual reports (ranging from 2014-2018 or 2015-2019, depending on the company) and websites from 12 of the leading companies in the global food and beverage industry were reviewed to identify uses of AI and emerging technologies to influence consumer behaviour. Uses of AI and emerging technologies were categorised according to the Typology of Interventions in Proximal Physical Micro-Environments (TIPPME) framework, a tool for categorising and describing nudge-type behaviour change interventions (which has also previously been used to describe dark nudge-type approaches used by the alcohol industry). SETTING: Not applicable. PARTICIPANTS: 12 leading companies in the global food and beverage industry. RESULTS: Text was extracted from 56 documents from 11 companies. AI-enabled dark nudges used by food and beverage companies included those that altered products and objects' availability (e.g., social listening to inform product development), position (e.g., decision technology and facial recognition to manipulate the position of products on menu boards), functionality (e.g., decision technology to prompt further purchases based on current selections) and presentation (e.g., augmented or virtual reality to deliver engaging and immersive marketing). CONCLUSIONS: Public health practitioners and policymakers must understand and engage with these technologies and tactics if they are to counter industry promotion of products harmful to health, particularly as investment by the industry in AI and other emerging technologies suggests their use will continue to grow.

Published findings on the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of sialoceles are limited to brief descriptions from reported cases in eight dogs and one cat. The authors have seen sialoceles with CT characteristics that are not consistent with these previous reports. The purpose of this multicenter, retrospective, descriptive, case series study was to provide more detailed descriptions of the CT appearance of confirmed sialoceles in dogs. Dogs over a 10-year period with cytologically or histologically confirmed sialoceles and pre- and postcontrast CT studies of the head were included. Multiple qualitative and quantitative features were described for each sialocele with histological correlation. Twelve dogs with a total of 13 sialoceles were identified, including: seven cervical sialoceles, three complex (combined cervical and sublingual) sialoceles, two sublingual sialoceles, and one zygomatic sialocele. All sialoceles were characterized by fluid attenuating, non-contrast enhancing contents (median 18.5 HU) and soft tissue attenuating, contrast-enhancing walls. The external margins of all sialocele walls were smooth; however, the internal margins in six sialoceles were irregular with poorly defined nodular to frond-like protrusions. Mineralized foci of variable size (range < 1 mm to 4.8 mm) and attenuation (range 119 to 1253 HU) were present in seven sialoceles and histologically identified as sialoliths (three sialoceles) and osseous metaplasia (two sialoceles). A unique finding in the sialoceles in this study was the presence of intraluminal nodular to frond-like protrusions arising from the wall. This study also reports the CT appearance of cervical and complex sialoceles and sialocele mineralizations.

The distinct functions of individual cell types require cells to express specific sets of genes. The germinating seed is an excellent model to study genome regulation between cell types since the majority of the transcriptome is differentially expressed in a short period, beginning from a uniform, metabolically inactive state. In this study, we applied laser-capture microdissection RNA-sequencing to small numbers of cells from the plumule, radicle tip and scutellum of germinating barley seeds every 8 h, over a 48 h time course. Tissue-specific gene expression was notably common; 25% (910) of differentially expressed transcripts in plumule, 34% (1876) in radicle tip and 41% (2562) in scutellum were exclusive to that organ. We also determined that tissue-specific storage of transcripts occurs during seed development and maturation. Co-expression of genes had strong spatiotemporal structure, with most co-expression occurring within one organ and at a subset of specific time points during germination. Overlapping and distinct enrichment of functional categories were observed in the tissue-specific profiles. We identified candidate transcription factors amongst these that may be regulators of spatiotemporal gene expression programs. Our findings contribute to the broader goal of generating an integrative model that describes the structure and function of individual cells within seeds during germination.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) often have concomitant anxiety and depression. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) combines the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. It is a group-based therapy and has been shown to be efficacious in functional gastrointestinal disorders. There are no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating MBCT in FD. We aimed to evaluate feasibility and efficacy of MBCT in FD management. METHODS: We performed a mixed-method single-center pilot randomized trial of 28 patients fulfilling ROME-III criteria for FD. Fifteen patients were randomized to an 8-week MBCT program while 13 underwent treatment-as-usual (TAU). Patients completed questionnaires at baseline and at week 8. Two focus-groups were conducted. Feasibility of recruitment, acceptability of randomization, procedures and intervention, handout compliance and feasibility of quantitative measures were assessed. The primary outcome was subjective-clinical-assessment of FD symptoms (SCA-FD). Secondary outcome measures included Short-form Nepean Dyspepsia Index (SF-NDI), subjective-clinical-assessment of general health (SCA-GH), EuroQoL-Visual Analog Scale (EuroQoL-VAS), and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 Items (DASS-21). RESULTS: Twelve of 15 patients in the MBCT group completed the program. There was a trend towards symptom improvement, with 90% in the MBCT group reporting improvement in SCA-FD compared with 45% in TAU(P = 0.063). Patients who underwent MBCT reported greater improvement in SF-NDI (mean change: -8.8 (SD: 7.5) vs -0.7 (7.2), P = 0.018) and DASS-21 (-19.8 (29.5) vs -5.5 (6.6) P = 0.13) compared with TAU. There was no difference in SCA-GH and EuroQoL-VAS. Based on SCA-FD improvement, the eventual RCT will require 50 patients (25 in each group). CONCLUSIONS: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is likely efficacious for FD, and it would be feasible to conduct a RCT.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Effective, resource-efficient treatment is urgently needed to address the high rates of pediatric and adolescent obesity. This need has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of a mobile health tool as an early intervention before a clinic-based multidisciplinary weight management program could be an effective treatment strategy that is appropriate during a pandemic. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of and adolescent engagement with a mobile app-based lifestyle intervention program as an early intervention before enrollment in a clinic-based multidisciplinary weight management program. METHODS: This prospective single-cohort study involved adolescents, aged 10-16 years, who were overweight and obese (defined as BMI percentile above the 85th percentile). Participants used the mobile Kurbo app as an early intervention before enrolling in a clinic-based multidisciplinary weight management program. Kurbo's health coaches provided weekly individual coaching informed by a model of supportive accountability via video chat, and participants self-monitored their health behavior. The implementation of Kurbo as an early intervention was evaluated using the reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance framework by reach (number who consented to participate out of all patients approached), implementation (Kurbo engagement and evaluation), and effectiveness as measured by the primary outcome of the BMI z-score at 3 months. Secondary outcome measures included changes in body fat percentage, nutrition and physical activity levels, and quality of life at 3 months. Maintenance was defined as the outcome measures at 6-month follow-up. RESULTS: Of the 73 adolescents who were approached for enrollment, 40 (55%) of adolescents were recruited. The mean age was 13.8 (SD 1.7) years, and the mean BMI z-score was 2.07 (SD 0.30). In the multiethnic Asian sample, 83% (33/40) of the participants had household incomes below the national median. Kurbo engagement was high, with 83% (33/40) of participants completing at least 7 coaching sessions. In total, 78% (18/23) of participants rated the app as good to excellent and 70% (16/23) stated that they would recommend it to others. There were no statistically significant changes in BMI z-scores at 3 months (P=.19) or 6 months (P=.27). Participants showed statistically significant improvements in measured body fat percentage, self-reported quality of life, and self-reported caloric intake from the 3-day food diaries at 3 and 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: The use of Kurbo before enrollment in an outpatient multidisciplinary clinical care intervention is a feasible strategy to expand the reach of adolescent obesity management services to a low-income and racially diverse population. Although there was no significant change in BMI z-scores, the use of Kurbo as an early intervention could help to improve quality of life and reduce body fat percentage and total caloric intake.

In this research, we propose two Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) variants to undertake feature selection tasks. The aim is to overcome two major shortcomings of the original PSO model, i.e., premature convergence and weak exploitation around the near optimal solutions. The first proposed PSO variant incorporates four key operations, including a modified PSO operation with rectified personal and global best signals, spiral search based local exploitation, Gaussian distribution-based swarm leader enhancement, and mirroring and mutation operations for worst solution improvement. The second proposed PSO model enhances the first one through four new strategies, i.e., an adaptive exemplar breeding mechanism incorporating multiple optimal signals, nonlinear function oriented search coefficients, exponential and scattering schemes for swarm leader, and worst solution enhancement, respectively. In comparison with a set of 15 classical and advanced search methods, the proposed models illustrate statistical superiority for discriminative feature selection for a total of 13 data sets.

Automated deep neural architecture generation has gained increasing attention. However, exiting studies either optimize important design choices, without taking advantage of modern strategies such as residual/dense connections, or they optimize residual/dense networks but reduce search space by eliminating fine-grained network setting choices. To address the aforementioned weaknesses, we propose a novel particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based deep architecture generation algorithm, to devise deep networks with residual connections, whilst performing a thorough search which optimizes important design choices. A PSO variant is proposed which incorporates a new encoding scheme and a new search mechanism guided by non-uniformly randomly selected neighboring and global promising solutions for the search of optimal architectures. Specifically, the proposed encoding scheme is able to describe convolutional neural network architecture configurations with residual connections. Evaluated using benchmark datasets, the proposed model outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods for architecture generation. Owing to the guidance of diverse non-uniformly selected neighboring promising solutions in combination with the swarm leader at fine-grained and global levels, the proposed model produces a rich assortment of residual architectures with great diversity. Our devised networks show better capabilities in tackling vanishing gradients with up to 4.34% improvement of mean accuracy in comparison with those of existing studies.

RESUMEN

A 2-year-old female spayed Great Dane presented for inappetence and lethargy. Abdominal radiographs revealed a severely gas-distended segment of colon. Computed tomography was performed and characterized a 180° anticlockwise colonic torsion with entrapment in a mesenteric/omental rent without vascular compromise. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed entrapment, but not colonic torsion. Computed tomography provided important information to assist clinical management decisions for this dog with colonic entrapment.

Mineral-attenuating material is occasionally seen in the anal sacs of dogs during abdominal CT studies. This retrospective, descriptive study was performed to estimate the prevalence and CT appearance of this mineral-attenuating material. A total of 357 abdominal CTs were reviewed retrospectively. The mineral-attenuating material was most easily identifiable using the brain window setting (window width: 120 HU; window level: 40 HU). In the current study, the prevalence of mineral-attenuating material in the anal sacs was 7.6% (95% confidence interval, 5.0-10.8%) with 48.1% bilateral involvement and equal distribution in the right and left in dogs with unilateral involvement. Successful collection and material analysis were performed in three dogs. The material was determined to be 100% dried blood, 100% waxy matter, and a "small amount of fat enmeshed in unidentified noncrystallined material." Given the CT appearance and the Hounsfield unit of these mineral-attenuating material within the anal sacs, the term "anal sacculiths" is proposed. All dogs with anal sacculiths within this study population did not have any reported disease of the anal sacs.

An 11-year-old, spayed female American domestic shorthair cat was presented with open-mouth breathing and dyspnea due to respiratory tract disease. Radiographically, there was thickening of the retropharyngeal soft tissue and soft palate, focal pulmonary change, and severe pectus excavatum (PE), best seen on the left lateral view. Repeat thoracic radiographs 4 months later showed persistent PE, but only on the right lateral view; PE was absent on the left lateral view. The dynamic component of the observed PE was presumably acquired secondary to chronic upper respiratory disease and/or concurrent increased pliability of the thoracic wall from prolonged prednisolone treatment.


Pectus excavatum dynamique acquis présumé chez un chat. Une chatte domestique américaine stérilisée de 11 ans a présenté une respiration à bouche ouverte et une dyspnée due à une maladie des voies respiratoires. Radiographiquement, il y avait un épaississement des tissus mous rétropharyngés et du palais mou, une modification pulmonaire focale et un pectus excavatum (PE) sévère, mieux visible sur la vue latérale gauche. Des radiographies thoraciques répétées 4 mois plus tard ont montré une PE persistante, mais uniquement sur la vue latérale droite; la PE était absent sur la vue latérale gauche. La composante dynamique de la PE observée était vraisemblablement acquise secondaire à une maladie chronique des voies respiratoires supérieures et/ou à une flexibilité accrue concomitante de la paroi thoracique à la suite d'un traitement prolongé à la prednisolone.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).
