RESUMEN

Vasohibin-2 (VASH2) is confirmed to be associated with angiogenesis. To investigate the vitreous levels of VASH2 and how VASH2 induces angiogenesis in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), a total of 120 eyes were enrolled in this prospective and randomized controlled study and the vitreous level of VASH2 was quantified by Luminex liquid suspension chip. Vector systems were applied in human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs) for VASH2 gene overexpression, along with interfering lentiviral vectors (VASH2-shRNA) for VASH2 gene silencing. Cell migration, autophagic flux, as well as the expression of α-tubulin, detyrosinated ⍺-tubulin, LC3 II/LC3 I, P62 were detected under normal, VASH2 overexpression, or interference conditions. The level of VASH2 in PDR patients was significantly higher (218.61 ± 30.14 pg/ml) than that in ERM/MH patients (80.78 ± 2.05 pg/ml) (P = 0.001). The migration ability of HRMECs was significantly increased in VASH2 overexpression group, while in the interfering group, the migration ability decreased. VASH2 increased the detyrosination of ⍺-tubulin. The high fluorescence intensity of autophagic flux showed an activation of autophagy in VASH2 overexpression group, which was also confirmed by the increase of LC3 II/LC3 I ratio and the decrease of P62. Collectively, the present study shows in PDR, vitreous level of VASH2 is higher. VASH2 promotes neovascularization by inducing autophagy, suggesting VASH2 could be a new anti-angiogenic drug target for PDR.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: For females in puberty, mastectomy caused by pathological gigantomastia usually brings significant psychological problems. Appropriate immediate breast reconstruction method is necessary. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to present a novel method of breast reconstruction that requires neither implants nor donor-site sacrifice. METHODS: All patients who were diagnosed with pathological gigantomastia and indicated for nipple-sparing or skin-sparing mastectomy (NSM or SSM) were selected. All extra skin was de-epithelialized, followed by NSM or SSM through a vertical incision on the lower pole of the breast. Then, a skin and dermal envelope in all directions was formed. Whether to preserve the nipple-areolar complex depended on its perfusion. The dermal flap was folded inward to serve as the "autologous dermal filler" and reconstruct the breast. A second surgery of inframammary fold elevation for larger projection was performed at least 6 months. Follow up for at least 1 year and record complications as well as pre- and postoperative BREAST-Q Scores. RESULTS: A total of 11 breasts were included. Four (36.4%) were NSM and seven (63.6%) were SSM. Nipple to sternal notch distance in NSM and SSM was 32.3±9.1cm and 35.1±4.4cm, respectively. No complications occurred, while one breast with NSM showed nipple upward displacement. The BREAST-Q indicated significant postoperative improvements in breast satisfaction (20.5 ± 11.3 vs 80.2 ± 10.4) and psychosocial well-being (23.4 ± 8.9 vs. 81.4 ± 11.3). CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary study demonstrated the efficacy and long-term safety of "autologous breast dermal filler." For adolescents, it is a less invasive autologous breast reconstruction method, or transitional plan for further adjustment in adulthood. RESUMEN

Cryoinjury mitigation is key in cell cryopreservation. Here, we aimed to assess the effectiveness of nanographene oxide (nano-GO) for improving cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) in human adipose stem cell (hADSC) cryopreservation. For in vitro experiments, nano-GO (5 µg/mL) was added to the CPAs in the control, and passage (P) 2 hADSCs were collected and cryopreserved for around two weeks. We compared cytotoxicity, cell viability, immunophenotypes, proliferation, cell apoptosis, and tri-lineage differentiation. In vivo, studies used lipoaspirate to create non-enriched or hADSC-enriched fat tissues by combining it with PBS or hADSCs cryopreserved with the aforementioned CPAs. Each nude mouse received a 0.3 mL subcutaneous injection of the graft. At 12 weeks, the grafts were harvested. Histology, adipocyte-associated genes and protein, vascular density and angiogenic cytokines, macrophage infiltration, and inflammatory cytokines were analyzed. Nano-GO CPA contributed to increased cell viability, improved cell recovery, and lowered levels of early apoptosis. Nano GO at concentrations of 0.01-100 µg/mL caused no cytotoxicity to hADSCs. The absence of nano GOs in the intracellular compartments of the cells was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. The fat grafts from the CPA-GO group showed more viable adipocytes and significantly increased angiogenesis compared to the PBS and CPA-C groups. Adding hADSCs from the CPA-GO group to the graft reduced macrophage infiltration and MCP-1 expression. Nano-GO plays an anti-apoptotic role in the cryopreservation of hADSCs, which could improve the survival of transplanted fat tissues, possibly via improved angiogenesis and lower inflammatory response in the transplanted adipose tissue.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Decellularized adipose-derived matrix (DAM) represents a new alternative to tissue fillers. The function of DAM is closely associated with the decellularization technique used for its preparation. However, most techniques are time-consuming and expensive, and this might reduce the popularity of DAM. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate an enzyme-free adipose decellularization method and generate a DAM capable of adipose tissue regeneration. METHODS: DAMs prepared by the enzyme-free and Flynn's methods were compared and co-cultured with human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) to investigate cytocompatibility. Adipose tissue formation was evaluated by injecting the DAMs into the backs of nude mice over 4 weeks. Samples were harvested for gross and perilipin immunohistochemistry analysis at 1 and 4 weeks. RESULTS: The enzyme-free method is effective for adipose decellularization because it removes adipocytes and preserves the microstructure. In vitro, the DAM made by the enzyme-free method could support the attachment, growth, proliferation, and differentiation of hADSCs, and promote the enhanced secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor by hADSCs; this DAM also induced the formation and maturity of adipocytes in vivo. CONCLUSIONS: This study describes a highly effective enzyme-free method for adipose tissue decellularization that also promotes adipocyte formation and adipose tissue volume stability in vitro and in vivo, resulting in a new alternative tissue filler.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to compare concentrations of VEGF family growth factors, inflammation-related factors, and adhesion molecules in the aqueous humor of eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME), with and without prior vitrectomy. METHODS: A total of 31 eyes were included, 11 with DME that had undergone vitrectomy, 9 with DME but without vitrectomy, and 11 from age-related cataract patients as controls. The concentrations of cytokines including TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, IP-10, MCP-1, IFN-γ, MIP-1 α, MIP-1 ß, PECAM-1, MIF, VCAM-1, ICAM-1, PIGF were quantified using Luminex Human Discovery Assay. Central macular thickness (CMT) values of all eyes were measured using optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS: (1) Vitrectomized DME eyes exhibited significantly higher levels of IL-6 and IL-8 compared to non-vitrectomized eyes (P < 0.05). (2) In vitrectomized group, after Benjamini-Hochberg correction, there was a significant positive correlation between the levels of VEGF and PlGF (rs = 0.855, P < 0.05), as well as the levels of TNF-α and IFN-γ (rs = 0.858, P < 0.05). In non-vitrectomized group, significant positive correlations were found between VEGF and PlGF levels after correcting for multiple comparisons (rs = 0.9, P < 0.05). (3) In non-vitrectomized group, the concentrations of VEGF and PlGF in aqueous humor were significantly positively correlated with CMT values (rs = 0.95, P < 0.05; rs = 0.9, P < 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The concentrations of IL-6 and IL-8 in the aqueous humor were significantly higher in vitrectomized DME eyes compared to nonvitrectomized DME eyes and the levels of VEGF were similar in the two groups, suggesting that inflammation after vitrectomy may be a key factor in the occurrence and development of DME.

RESUMEN

Zika virus (ZIKV) reemerged in 2016 and attracted much more attention worldwide. To date, the limited knowledge of ZIKV interactions with host cells in the early stages of infection impedes the prevention of viral epidemics and the treatment of ZIKV disease. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway plays an essential role in the regulation of autophagy and protein synthesis during multiple viral infections. This study aimed to investigate the functional role of mTOR signaling in ZIKV replication in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Immunoblotting demonstrated that ZIKV infection inhibited mTORC1 signaling, enhancing autophagy but obstructing protein translation. Drugs or siRNA for interfering with mTOR signaling molecules were utilized to demonstrate that AKT/TSC2/mTORC1 signaling was involved in ZIKV infection and that autophagy promoted ZIKV production, but viral protein expression was regulated by mTORC1 signaling. Moreover, confocal microscopy indicated a robust correlation between autophagy and viral RNA transcription. This study clarifies the dual functions of mTOR signaling during ZIKV infection and provides theoretical support for developing potential anti-ZIKV drugs based on mTOR signaling molecules and deeper insights to better understand the mechanism between ZIKV and host cells.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Mathematical models to forecast the risk trend of the COVID-19 pandemic timely are of great significance to control the pandemic, but the requirement of manual operation and many parameters hinders their efficiency and value for application. This study aimed to establish a convenient and prompt one for monitoring emerging infectious diseases online and achieving risk assessment in real time. METHODS: The Optimized Moving Average Prediction Limit (Op-MAPL) algorithm model analysed real-time COVID-19 data online and was validated using the data of the Delta variant in India and the Omicron in the United States. Then, the model was utilized to determine the infection risk level of the Omicron in Shanghai and Beijing. RESULTS: The Op-MAPL model can predict the epidemic peak accurately. The daily risk ranking was stable and predictive, with an average accuracy of 87.85% within next 7 days. Early warning signals were issued for Shanghai and Beijing on February 28 and April 23, 2022, respectively. The two cities were rated as medium-high risk or above from March 27 to April 20 and from April 24 to May 5, indicating that the pandemic had entered a period of rapid increase. After April 21 and May 26, the risk level was downgraded to medium and became stable by the algorithm, indicating that the pandemic had been controlled well and mitigated gradually. CONCLUSIONS: The Op-MAPL relies on nothing but an indicator to assess the risk level of the COVID-19 pandemic with different data sources and granularities. This forward-looking method realizes real-time monitoring and early warning effectively to provide a valuable reference to prevent and control infectious diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Laser photocoagulation is an effective procedure for the treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME). However, the beneficial effects of conventional laser photocoagulation (CLP) are accompanied by the destruction of retinal photoreceptors. Therefore, subthreshold micropulse laser photocoagulation (SMLP) was proposed for DME. OBJECTIVES: This meta-analysis study was performed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of SMLP compared with CLP for the management of DME. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, SinoMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, Wanfang, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases, published until Dec 2021, were searched to identify studies evaluating the clinical outcomes of SMLP for DME. RESULTS: Eight randomized controlled trials were selected for this meta-analysis involving a total of 546 eyes (275 eyes in SMLP group and 271 eyes in CLP group). SMLP of different wavelengths (577 nm and 810 nm) and duty cycles (5% and 15%) was applied. The pooled outcomes showed that SMLP group, especially 577 nm and 810 nm 15% duty cycle parameter settings, had a statistically significant higher efficacy than CLP group in terms of BCVA (MD = -0.02, 95% CI: -0.03 to -0.01, p < 0.01; MD = -0.09, 95% CI: -0.09 to -0.09, p < 0.01) and showed more significant advantages than CLP group in resolving macular edema assessed by reduction of CMT (MD = -32.87, 95% CI: -37.61 to -28.13, p < 0.01; MD = -8.01, 95% CI: -9.06 to -6.96, p < 0.01), whereas the efficacy of 577 nm and 810 nm 5% duty cycle SMLP subgroups remained numerically superior to CLP group, but nonsignificantly (p > 0.05). In the field of CS, SMLP group (no matter parameter settings) resulted in better preservation of CS compared to CLP group (MD = 1.96, 95% CI: 1.47-2.46, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Compared with CLP, SMLP may get superior efficacy and safety on improvement of BCVA, reduction of CMT, and preservation of CS. In clinical, SMLP can be considered as a safe and effective therapy in the management of DME.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The choice of implant shape (anatomic or round) is one of the most critical issues for breast augmentation. Determining whether there are differences in the postoperative breast morphology of the 2 implants is pivotal for surgical planning. This issue has been controversial and lacking in evidence. The aim of this study was to provide reference for implant selection by comparing breast morphology after dual-plane augmentation with anatomic and round implants using 3-dimensional scanning technology. METHODS: Patients with implant volume less than 300 mL who underwent transaxillary dual-plane augmentation were included in this study and were grouped according to implant shape. Three-dimensional scans were performed preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Postoperative breast height (BH), breast width (BW), BH of upper pole (BHUP), BH of lower pole (BHLP), breast projection (BP), BP of upper pole (BPUP), and BP of lower pole (BPLP) were measured separately, resulting in corresponding ratios (BH/BW, BHUP/BHLP, BP/BH, BPUP/BPLP). Breast volume, and the volumes of each pole (breast volume of upper pole [BVUP], breast volume of lower pole [BVLP]) and its ratio (BVUP/BVLP) were calculated. Correlation and regression analysis on the influencing factors of breast volume were performed. RESULTS: Thirty patients with anatomic implants and 26 with round implants were enrolled in this study. The mean volumes of anatomic and round implants were 260.5 ± 26.7 and 267.9 ± 21.7 mL (P = 0.192). The ratios of BH/BW in the 2 groups were 1.39 ± 0.12 and 1.37 ± 0.19, respectively (P = 0.582). The BHUP/BHLP values of 2 groups were 1.35 ± 0.22 and 1.41 ± 0.25 (P = 0.160). Two sets of BPUP/BPLP were 0.68 ± 0.19 and 0.73 ± 0.17 (P = 0.133). The ratios of BP/BH in the 2 groups were 0.39 ± 0.08 and 0.39 ± 0.06 (P = 0.830). The BVUP/BVLP ratios for both groups were 0.75 ± 0.11 and 0.77 ± 0.12 (P = 0.287). There was a volume loss rate of 13.3% ± 3.9% and 13.9% ± 5% (P = 0.489). The postoperative volume showed a positive correlation with both the preoperative volume and the implant volume. CONCLUSIONS: For patients with breast dysplasia undergoing transaxillary dual-plane augmentation with anatomic or round implants less than 300 mL, the difference in postoperative breast morphology is not obvious. Using these 2 shapes of implants results in a similar degree of volume loss.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Breast augmentation is the most performed cosmetic surgery in the world. Although smooth round implants are widely used, the trend in breast morphology change after dual-plane augmentation with such implants remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed the issue with the support of 3D scanning technology, which may help provide an objective basis for the evaluation of postoperative outcomes and the determination of follow-up time points. METHODS: Patients undergoing dual-plane augmentation with smooth round implants were prospectively included in this study. The variation trend of postoperative breast morphology was analyzed by measuring the specified linear distance, body surface distance, breast projection, nipple position and breast volume at different follow-up time points (1st month, post-1M; 3rd month, post-3M; 6th month, post-6M; 12th month, post-12M). RESULTS: A total of 18 patients were included in this study. During the postoperative follow-up period, breast height prolonged while interval of the medial border gradually widened. Breast width was maintained without significant alterations from post-1M. The N-MBB lengthened with shortening of the N-LBB, meanwhile the N-IMF was prolonged by 0.6 cm. Breast volume was gradually reduced with the decrease in breast projection. The position of the nipple gradually shifted laterally, superiorly, and posteriorly after surgery. There was no statistically significant difference between the linear distance at post-3M and post-12M, while the surface distance, breast projection, nipple position and breast volume tended to be stable at post-6M. CONCLUSIONS: After dual-plane augmentation with smooth round implants, the base contour of the breast shifted outwards and downwards, and stabilized after 3 months. The remaining breast morphological parameters reached a relative steady state by post-6M, which could be regarded as the time point for objective evaluation of postoperative effect. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Donor age is an important factor affecting the biological characteristics of human adipose-derived stem cells. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of age on the biological properties of cryopreserved adipose-derived stem cells and fat survival of cell-assisted lipotransfer. METHODS: Human lipoaspirates were obtained from 60 healthy female patients (aged 18-65 years) who underwent abdominal liposuction. Samples were divided into three groups according to donor age: group A, 18-29 years; group B, 30-49 years; and group C, 50-65 years. Adipose-derived stem cells were obtained by in vitro culture at the second passage and cryopreserved for 4 weeks. The cryopreserved ASCs were examined for biological characteristics, including cell proliferation, wound healing and adipogenic differentiation. Then, the fat survival of cryopreserved ASC-assisted fat transplantation was compared at different ages. RESULTS: SVF viability decreased with increasing age. Moreover, there was a decline in cell proliferation and migration of ASCs with increasing age. A significant difference was found in the adipogenic differentiation of ASCs in the three groups. There were significant differences in graft retention in different age groups. ASC-assisted fat grafting was more effective in young people than in elderly people. CONCLUSIONS: Honor age affects the proliferation and migration of adipose-derived stem cells but not the adipogenic differentiation potential of ASCs. Cryopreserved ASCs from younger people more effectively improved the fat survival of grafts. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE V: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. RESUMEN

Auxin serves as an essential regulator of the expression of many different genes in plants, thereby regulating growth and development. The specific functional roles of members of the SAUR (small auxin-up RNA) auxin early response gene family in the development of cucumber plants, however, remain to be fully clarified. Here, 62 SAUR family genes were identified, followed by their classification into 7 groups that included several functionally associated cis-regulatory elements. Phylogenetic tree and chromosomal location-based analyses revealed a high degree of homology between two cucumber gene clusters and other plants in the Cucurbitaceae family. These findings, together with the results of an RNA-seq analysis, revealed high levels of CsSAUR31 expression within the root and male flower tissues. Plants overexpressing CsSAUR31 exhibited longer roots and hypocotyls. Together, these results provide a basis for further efforts to explore the roles that SAUR genes play in cucumber plants, while also expanding the pool of available genetic resources to guide research focused on plant growth and development.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is severely threatening and challenging public health worldwide. Epidemiological studies focused on the influence of outdoor air pollution (AP) on COVID-19 risk have produced inconsistent conclusions. We aimed to quantitatively explore this association using a meta-analysis. METHODS: We searched for studies related to outdoor AP and COVID-19 risk in the Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases. No language restriction was utilized. The search date entries were up to August 13, 2021. Pooled estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained with random-/fixed-effects models. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021244656. RESULTS: A total of 35 articles were eligible for the meta-analysis. For long-term exposure to AP, COVID-19 incidence was positively associated with 1 µg/m3 increase in nitrogen dioxide (NO2; effect size = 1.042, 95% CI 1.017-1.068), particulate matter with diameter <2.5 µm (PM2.5; effect size = 1.056, 95% CI 1.039-1.072), and sulfur dioxide (SO2; effect size = 1.071, 95% CI 1.002-1.145). The COVID-19 mortality was positively associated with 1 µg/m3 increase in nitrogen dioxide (NO2; effect size = 1.034, 95% CI 1.006-1.063), PM2.5 (effect size = 1.047, 95% CI 1.025-1.1071). For short-term exposure to air pollutants, COVID-19 incidence was positively associated with 1 unit increase in air quality index (effect size = 1.001, 95% CI 1.001-1.002), 1 µg/m3 increase NO2 (effect size = 1.014, 95% CI 1.011-1.016), particulate matter with diameter <10 µm (PM10; effect size = 1.005, 95% CI 1.003-1.008), PM2.5 (effect size = 1.003, 95% CI 1.002-1.004), and SO2 (effect size = 1.015, 95% CI 1.007-1.023). CONCLUSIONS: Outdoor air pollutants are detrimental factors to COVID-19 outcomes. Measurements beneficial to reducing pollutant levels might also reduce the burden of the pandemic.

RESUMEN

AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of trans-sub-Tenon's ciliary nerve block anesthesia and transcutaneous retrobulbar anesthesia in patients undergoing pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). METHODS: A prospective, randomized, double-blinded clinical trial was conducted at Zhongda Hospital, Affiliated with Southeast University, from February 2021 to October 2021. Patients undergoing PPV were randomly allocated into two groups: the trans-sub-Tenon's anesthesia group (ST group) and the retrobulbar anesthesia group (RB group) in the ratio of 1:1. The ST group received 2 ml ropivacaine through the Tenon capsule to the retrobulbar space, while the RB group received 2 ml ropivacaine via transcutaneous retrobulbar injection. Visual analog score (VAS) was used to evaluate pain during the whole process, including during anesthesia implementation, intraoperatively and on the first day after the operation. Movement evaluation (Brahma scores) and anesthesia-related complications were also noted. RESULTS: Finally, a total of 120 patients were included in the study (60 in the ST group and 60 in the RB group). There were no significant differences in baseline patient characteristics or surgical features between the two groups. The VAS pain scores for anesthesia implementation were 0.52 ± 0.47 in the ST group and 1.83 ± 0.87 in the RB group (P < 0.001). The VAS scores during the operation were 0.53 ± 0.49 in the ST group and 1.48 ± 1.02 in the RB group (P < 0.001) and those on the first day after the operation were 0.37 ± 0.38 in the ST group and 0.81 ± 0.80 in the RB group (P = 0.002). No patients required supplemental intravenous anesthesia intraoperatively. The Brahma movement scores were 0.70 ± 1.64 in the ST group (scores ranging from 0 to 8) and 2.38 ± 3.15 in the RB group (ranging from 0 to 12) (P = 0.001). Forty-two patients in each group received laser photocoagulation during surgery. Fifteen patients (36%) in the ST group could not see the flashes of the laser, compared to 8 patients (19%) in the RB group (P = 0.087). No serious sight-threatening or life-threatening complications related to anesthesia were observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS: For PPV, trans-sub-Tenon's ciliary nerve block anesthesia was more effective in controlling pain than transcutaneous retrobulbar anesthesia during the whole surgery process, including during anesthesia implementation, intraoperatively and on the first day after the operation. Additionally, it could achieve better effect of akinesia and was relatively safe. Trans-sub-Tenon's anesthesia could be considered an alternative form of local anesthesia during vitreoretinal procedures. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Congenital inverted nipple is not uncommon in Asian females, which impairs the patient's psychology and breastfeeding function. Although various methods have been reported in references, no consensus has been reached on an ideal treatment for severe inverted nipples. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to propose a minimally invasive and reliable method that could correct severe inverted nipples, reduce their recurrence rate, and create a definite nipple neck for a natural shape. METHODS: We designed a two-step technique to correct severe inverted nipples, including congenital grade III inversion and recurrent grade III inversion with or without scar adhesion after correction with different methods from other hospitals. A retrospective study was performed on 38 patients (68 nipples) who underwent the new two-step technique in our department. The follow-up time was at least 6 months. Patient demographics, operation details, and complication rate were documented. RESULTS: A total of 68 nipples in 38 patients (bilateral: 30 patients; unilateral: 8 patients) received correction, among which there were four recurrent cases from other hospitals treated with different methods. In this study, the total recurrence rate was 7.89%. In these cases, the nipple exhibited the appearance of Grade I inversion, but not back to the preoperative state of Grade III. There was one case that suffered exposure of thread knot. CONCLUSIONS: The two-step technique is a minimally invasive method to successfully correct severe inverted nipples with a low recurrence rate and achieve a natural shape with a definite nipple neck. RESUMEN

We report generation of ultrashort near-UV pulses by soliton self-compression in kagomé-style hollow-core photonic crystal fibers filled with ambient air. Pump pulses with the energy of 2.6 µJ and duration of 54 fs at 400 nm were compressed temporally by a factor of 5, to a duration of ∼11 fs. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations, showing that both Raman and Kerr effects play a role in the compression dynamics. The convenience of using ambient air and the absence of glass windows that would distort the compressed pulses makes the setup highly attractive as the basis of an efficient table-top UV pulse compressor.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Globally, the number of metabolic syndrome (MetS) cases has increased substantially over time. However, the association between air pollution (AP) and MetS risk has been contradictory in observational studies. This is the first reported meta-analysis quantitatively exploring the aforementioned association. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science database entries up to September 14, 2020, and searches were updated up to December 6, 2020 to identify eligible articles on the AP-MetS risk association. No language restriction was imposed. Random-effects models were applied to estimate summary and subgroup effect sizes with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020210431. RESULTS: Eight articles (nine studies) were eligible for the meta-analysis. Increased MetS prevalence was not found to be associated with particulate matter less than 1 µm (PM1), 2.5 µm (PM2.5), and 10 µm (PM10) in diameter or nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and the summary effect sizes were 1.33 (95% CI: 0.95-1.85), 1.34 (95% CI: 0.96-1.89), 1.18 (95% CI: 0.98-1.19), and 1.28 (95% CI: 0.89-1.82), respectively, based on cross-sectional studies. The summary results indicated no association between each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and MetS incidence (effect size 2.78 [95% CI: 0.70-11.02]), based on cohort studies. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that MetS incidence in older men increased dramatically by 992% with each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence presented here suggests that although exposure to PM1, PM2.5, PM10, or NO2 was not found to have a significant association with the occurrence of MetS, the statistical significance of the relationship between exposure to PM1, PM2.5, or PM10 and MetS prevalence was approximately borderline. More studies on AP-MetS risk association in low-/middle-income countries, as well as on the association between other air pollutants and MetS risk, are warranted. A sufficient number of high-quality studies is required to perform a meaningful meta-analysis of the relationship between air pollutants and MetS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A predictive model for risk of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP)-related hepatitis in MP pneumonia pediatric patients can improve treatment selection and therapeutic effect. However, currently, no predictive model is available. METHODS: Three hundred seventy-four pneumonia pediatric patients with/without serologically-confirmed MP infection and ninety-three health controls were enrolled. Logistic regressions were performed to identify the determinant variables and develop predictive model. Predictive performance and optimal diagnostic threshold were evaluated using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). Stratification analysis by age and MP-IgM titer was used to optimize model's clinical utility. An external validation set, including 84 MP pneumonia pediatric patients, was used to verify the predictive efficiency. After univariate analysis to screen significant variables, monocyte count (MO), erythrocyte distribution width (RDW) and platelet count (PLT) were identified as independent predictors in multivariate analysis. RESULTS: We constructed MRP model: MO [^109/L] × 4 + RDW [%] - PLT [^109/L] × 0.01. MRP achieved an AUROC of 0.754 and the sensitivity and specificity at cut-off value 10.44 were 71.72 and 61.00 %, respectively in predicting MP-related hepatitis from MP pneumonia. These results were verified by the external validation set, whereas it merely achieved an AUROC of 0.540 in pneumonia without MP infection. The AUROC of MRP was 0.812 and 0.787 in infants and toddlers (0-36 months) and low MP-IgM titer subgroup (1:160-1:320), respectively. It can achieve an AUROC of 0.804 in infants and toddler with low MP-IgM titer subgroup. CONCLUSIONS: MRP is an effective predictive model for risk of MP-related hepatitis in MP pneumonia pediatric patients, especially infants and toddlers with low MP-IgM titer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Adipose tissue harvested by liposuctions is an available source of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs). Water-jet-assisted liposuction is a favorable method for fat collection with little mechanical damage. This study aimed to investigate whether or not the water-jet-assisted liposuction made a difference in the biological characteristics of cryopreserved ASCs and fat graft survival in cell-assisted lipotransfer. METHODS: Human lipoaspirates were obtained from the abdomen or thighs of 20 female participants for body contouring. A single surgeon randomly harvested 50 mL of adipose tissue by the water-jet-assisted liposuction and the conventional liposuction, respectively. Adipose-derived stem cells were isolated from lipoaspirates and then cryopreserved for 4 weeks. Cryopreserved ASCs were used to examine the surface markers, cell proliferation, migration, and adipogenic differentiation in vitro. The fat survival of ASCs-enriched grafts from different liposuctions was measured in animal models. RESULTS: The cryopreserved ASCs with the water-jet assistance had better capacities of cell proliferation, migration, and adipogenic differentiation and achieved a better survival result of ASCs-enriched fat grafting. CONCLUSIONS: Cryopreservation of ASCs with the water-jet force showed more excellent biological characteristics. The water-jet-assisted liposuction was superior to the conventional liposuction in obtaining ASCs and fat survival of coimplantation with grafts.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aims to put forward a new classification of breast asymmetry based on the relative position of the nipple and inframammary fold (IMF) and propose a surgical algorithm of determining new IMF to address breast asymmetry in patients undergoing transaxillary augmentation mammaplasty, which is named as NIMF (nipple inframammary) classification and surgical algorithm. METHODS: Three hundred and forty-five patients received transaxillary augmentation mammaplasty with anatomical implants. Preoperative breast asymmetry was classified into four types. I: asymmetrical nipple with asymmetrical IMF in the same direction; II: symmetrical nipple with asymmetrical IMF; III: asymmetrical nipple with symmetrical IMF; IV: asymmetrical nipple with unapparent IMF. Surgical plans (3 plans for type I, II, IV while 5 plans for type III) to set the new IMF were provided for each patient, who chose one of them as the final surgical plan. Breast-Q and Likert scale were used to evaluate patient satisfaction and symmetry of breast preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. RESULTS: The incidence of type I, II, III, IV was 30%, 15%, 13%, and 4%, respectively. Ninety-seven percent of patients with breast asymmetry chose plan C, which aimed to balance the relative position of nipple and IMF. Postoperative Breast-Q scores showed a significant rise compared with preoperative scores, but no statistical difference between plan C V.S. other plans. Patients with symmetrical preoperative breasts (Group A) had significantly higher postoperative Breast-Q scores than patients with asymmetrical preoperative breasts (Group B). In breast symmetry assessment, Group A had a significantly higher postoperative score than Group B, but the postoperative score was significantly lowered compared with the preoperative score in both Group A and B. CONCLUSION: The NIMF classification and surgical algorithm provide a systematic and scientific way to analyze and improve breast asymmetry, to achieve optimized patient satisfaction in transaxillary augmentation mammaplasty with anatomical implants.
