BACKGROUND: DNA damage caused by exposure to metal mixtures and the potential modulating role of genes involved in DNA repair and the antioxidant response have not been evaluated in newborns. AIM: The aim was to evaluate the association between prenatal exposure to metal mixtures and DNA repair capacity (DRC) in newborns from the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City (MAMC), a heavily polluted area, and the impact of variants in genes involved in DNA repair and the antioxidant response on this association. METHODS: We analyzed cord blood samples obtained at delivery from 125 healthy newborns from the MAMC. Twenty-four elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP‒MS), but only 12 (Cu, I, Se, Zn, As, Ba, Cs, Mn, Sb, Sr, Pb, and Ti) were quantified in most samples. DRC was assessed by the challenge-comet assay, and OGG1, PARP1, and NFE2L2 genotyping was performed with TaqMan probes. Metal mixtures were identified and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. Independent adjusted linear regression models were used to evaluate the associations. RESULTS: A null DRC was observed in 46% of newborns. The metals with the highest concentrations were Mn, Sr, Ti, and Pb. Essential elements showed normal levels. Only the mixture characterized by increased As, Cs, Cu, Se, and Zn levels was inversely associated with DRC. As was the principal contributor (37.8%) in the negative direction in the DRC followed by Ba and Sb, according to the WQS regression. Newborns carrying of the derived (G) allele of the PARP1 rs1136410 variant showed decreased DRC by exposure to some potentially toxic metals (PTMs) (As, Cs, and Ba). CONCLUSION: Prenatal exposure to metal mixtures negatively affected DRC in newborns, and the PARP1 rs1136410 variant had a modulating role in this association.

Coffee fruit rot (CFR) is a well-known disease worldwide, mainly caused by Colletotrichum spp., the most important species being C. kahawae subsp. kahawae. In Puerto Rico, Colletotrichum spp. were identified as pathogens of coffee fruits. The coffee berry borer (CBB) was shown to be a dispersal agent of these fungi, and interaction of Fusarium with Colletotrichum affecting coffee fruits was suggested. In this study, we demonstrated that Fusarium spp. also cause CFR in Puerto Rico. Fusarium spp. are part of the CBB mycobiota, and this insect is responsible for spreading the pathogens in coffee fields. We identified nine Fusarium spp. (F. nirenbergiae, F. bostrycoides, F. crassum, F. hengyangense, F. solani-melongenae, F. pseudocircinatum, F. meridionale, F. concolor, and F. lateritium) belonging to six Fusarium species complexes isolated from CBBs and from rotten coffee fruits. Pathogenicity tests showed that F. bostrycoides, F. lateritium, F. nirenbergiae, F. solani-melongenae, and F. pseudocircinatum were pathogens causing CFR on green coffee fruits. F. bostrycoides was the predominant species isolated from the CBB mycobiota and coffee fruits with symptoms of CFR, suggesting a close relationship between F. bostrycoides and the CBB. To our knowledge, this is the first report of F. bostrycoides, F. solani-melongenae, F. pseudocircinatum, and F. nirenbergiae causing CFR worldwide and the first report of F. lateritium causing CFR in Puerto Rico. Understanding the CFR disease complex and how the CBB contributes to dispersing different Fusarium spp. on coffee farms is important to implement disease management practices in Puerto Rico and in other coffee-producing countries.

Nanoribbons of imidacloprid, a systemic and chloronicotinyl insecticide, were successfully synthesized by laser-induced fragmentation/exfoliation of imidacloprid powders suspended in water, with widths ranging from 160 to 470 nm, lengths in the micron scale, and thickness of a few atoms layers. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of acute and chronic exposure to imidacloprid (IMC) bulk and compare its effects with synthesized imidacloprid nanoribbons (IMCNR) on larval and adult viability, developmental time, olfactory capacity, longevity, productivity, and genotoxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. Larvae or adults were exposed at 0.01, 0.02, or 0.03 ppm to IMC or IMCNR. Results demonstrated that IMCNR produced a significant reduction in viability and olfactory ability. IMC did not significantly alter viability and olfactory ability. Similarly, marked differences on longevity were detected between treatment with IMC and IMCNR where the lifespan of males treated with IMC was significantly higher than control while IMCNR produced a reduction. As for productivity, developmental time, and genotoxicity, no marked differences were found between both forms of IMC.

BACKGROUND: A disproportionate number of COVID-19 cases and deaths have been reported among Latinxs in the U.S. Among those most affected by the pandemic are marginalized families, including those that are undocumented and mixed-status, in which some, but not all members are undocumented. Undocumented and mixed-status families face multiple and chronic daily stressors that compromised their health and wellbeing. Salient stressors faced by undocumented Latinx families include poverty, social disadvantage, discrimination, dangerous living and working conditions, and limited access to healthcare. These stressors are frequently compounded with trauma, fear of detention, deportation, and family separation. PURPOSE: Informed by the literature and insights from our community-based work to address the health needs of undocumented and mixed status Latinx families during the pandemic, this paper uses a social determinants of health lens to present a narrative summary that highlights four primary psychosocial stressors faced by these families and their implications for mental health. DISCUSSION: These include stressors pertaining to (a) anti-immigrant rhetoric and actions; (b) family stressors and disruptions in family dynamics; (c) economic changes and financial losses; and (c) limited access to healthcare. Implications of the aforesaid stressors on the mental health of undocumented families and youth are also discussed. In addition, recommendations are provided for the provision of mental health services, best practices, and resources from a strengths-based approach.

The number of unaccompanied immigrant minors (UIMs) and families from Central America seeking asylum in the U.S. continues to rise. This growth, combined with restrictive government policies, led to crowded and suboptimal conditions in Customs and Border Patrol and non-governmental organization facilities. COVID-19 further taxed facilities and exacerbated uncertainty surrounding length of detention, basic human rights, and family reunification. The current project features testimonies from the authors who work as clinical experts and providers in Texas - a top destination for Central American immigrants. In collaboration with a deputy director of a not-for-profit human rights organization, volunteer psychologists, and the director of a humanitarian respite center, we describe challenges faced by administrators and clinical staff in addressing the mental health needs of immigrant children and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary themes identified were anti-immigrant policies that occurred concurrently with COVID-19; difficulty implementing COVID-19 protocols alongside scarcity of supplies and volunteers; increased mental health needs among UIMs and immigrant families; and challenges in UIM placement upon release from custody. Strategies for addressing clinical challenges in the near- and long-term and opportunities for improvement in care systems to immigrant youth, including correcting anti-immigrant policies, addressing ongoing COVID-19 protocols and challenges, meeting mental and physical health needs, facilitating release and reunification for unaccompanied immigrant minors, and maximizing youth resilience through trauma-informed interventions, are presented.

OBJECTIVES: Latinx and Asian people are experiencing an elevated rate of immigration status-related oppression-both systematically and individually-despite actual nationality, and this type of cultural stressor has seen a rampant increase recently in the United States. We aimed to assess the relation and effect of immigration status microaggressions on psychological stress and some mechanisms connected to these experiences. METHOD: Using a sample of Latinx and Asian college students (N = 776), we unpack the relationships between individual cultural stressors, such as immigration status microaggressions, and psychological stress, by exploring their mediating relation with internalized racism (Mediator 1), and fear of foreign objectification (Mediator 2), using Hayes's (2012) PROCESS Model 6-serial mediation. Furthermore, we expanded on this model, highlighting differences between Latinx and Asian participants (moderator) using a moderated mediation. RESULTS: Findings suggest a full serial mediation. Specifically, the psychological stress associated with immigration status microaggressions was mediated by internalized racism and fear of foreign objectification. Results also highlighted that Latinx participants, compared to Asian ones, showed a significant positive association between immigration status microaggressions with internalized racism and fear of foreign objectification. Furthermore, a significant interaction for Latinx who experience more fear of foreign objectification was positively associated with psychological stress. Indirect effects for each group are discussed. CONCLUSION: Our study is one of the first to explore cultural stress in the form of immigration status microaggressions in connection with more general forms of psychological stress and internalizing processes for two groups historically persecuted around immigration in the United States. BACKGROUND: Chromosomal abnormalities are present in 50 to 60% of miscarriages and in 6 to 19% of stillbirths. Although microarrays are preferred for studying chromosomal abnormalities, many hospitals cannot offer this methodology. OBJECTIVE: To present the results of the cytogenetic analysis of 303 products of conception (POC), which included 184 miscarriages, 49 stillbirths and 17 cases of undefined age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization, short tandem repeats and microarrays were used, depending on the type of loss and available sample. RESULTS: In 29 POCs we found maternal tissue and were eliminated from the analyses. Informative results were obtained in 250 (91.2 %)/274 cases; the karyotyping success rate was 80.7%; that of single nucleotide polymorphism microarrays, 94.5%; and that of fluorescence in situ hybridization and short tandem repeat, 100%. Cytogenetic abnormalities were observed in 57.6% of miscarriages and in 24.5% of stillbirths; 94% of total anomalies were numerical and 6% were submicroscopic. CONCLUSIONS: Karyotyping with simultaneous short tandem repeat study to rule out contamination of maternal cells is effective for studying miscarriages; in stillbirths, microarrays are recommended.


ANTECEDENTES: Las alteraciones cromosómicas están presentes en 50 a 60 % de los abortos espontáneos y en 6 a 19 % de los mortinatos. Aunque se prefieren los microarreglos para estudiarlos, numerosos hospitales no pueden ofrecerlos. OBJETIVO: Presentar los resultados del estudio citogenético de 303 productos de la concepción (POC), 184 se obtuvieron de abortos espontáneos, 49 fueron mortinatos y en 17 no se identificó la de edad gestacional. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Se empleó cariotipo, hibridación in situ con fluorescencia, secuencias cortas repetidas en tándem y microarreglos, según el tipo de pérdida y la muestra disponible. RESULTADOS: En 29 POC se encontró tejido materno, por lo que fueron eliminados de los análisis. En 250 (91.2 %)/274 casos se obtuvieron resultados informativos; la tasa de éxito del cariotipo fue de 80.7 %; la de los microarreglos de SNP, de 94.5 %; y la de la hibridación fluorescente in situ y la repetición corta en tándem, de 100 %. Se observaron anomalías citogenéticas en 57.6 % de los abortos espontáneos y en 24.5 % de los mortinatos; 94 % de las anomalías fueron numéricas y 6 %, submicroscópicas. CONCLUSIONES: El cariotipo en conjunto con el estudio de secuencias cortas repetidas en tándem para descartar contaminación de células maternas es efectivo para estudiar abortos espontáneos; los microarreglos se recomiendan en los mortinatos.

IMPORTANCE: Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) are at markedly increased risk for duodenal adenomas and cancer. Combination sulindac and erlotinib was previously shown to reduce duodenal polyp burden but was associated with a relatively high adverse event (AE) rate. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if a once weekly dosing schedule for erlotinib intervention improves the AE profile, while still providing efficacy with respect to reduced polyp burden, in participants with FAP. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Single-arm trial, enrolling 46 participants with FAP, conducted from October 2017 to September 2019 in eight academic cancer centres. EXPOSURES: Participants self-administered 350 mg of erlotinib by mouth, one time per week for 6 months. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Duodenal polyp burden (sum of polyp diameters) was assessed in the proximal duodenum by esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed at baseline and 6 months, with mean per cent change defined as the primary efficacy outcome of interest. Rate of grade 2-3 AEs was evaluated as a co-primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included changes in total duodenal polyp count, along with changes in lower gastrointestinal (GI) polyp burden and count (for participants examined by optional lower endoscopy). RESULTS: Forty-six participants (mean age, 44.1 years (range, 18-68); women, 22 (48%)) were enrolled; 42 participants completed 6 months of intervention and were included in the per-protocol analysis. Duodenal polyp burden was significantly reduced after 6 months of weekly erlotinib intervention, with a mean per cent change of -29.6% (95% CI, -39.6% to -19.7%; p<0.0001). Similar results were observed in subgroup analyses defined by participants with advanced duodenal polyposis (Spigelman 3) at baseline (mean, -27%; 95% CI, -38.7% to -15.2%; p<0.0001). Post-intervention Spigelman stage was downstaged in 12% of the participants. Lower GI polyp number was also decreased after 6 months of intervention (median, -30.8%; IQR, -47.4% to 0.0%; p=0.0256). Grade 2 or 3 AEs were reported in 71.7% of subjects, with only two experiencing grade 3 toxicity at least possibly related to intervention. CONCLUSION: In this single-arm, multi-centre trial of participants with FAP, erlotinib one time per week resulted in markedly lower duodenal polyp burden, and modestly reduced lower GI polyp burden, after 6 months of intervention. While AEs were still reported by nearly three-quarters of all participants, these events were generally lower grade and well-tolerated. These findings support further investigation of erlotinib as an effective, acceptable cancer preventive agent for FAP-associated GI polyposis. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02961374.

Skeletal muscle, the main metabolic engine in the body of vertebrates, is endowed with great plasticity. The association between skeletal muscle plasticity and two highly prevalent health problems: renal dysfunction and obesity, which share etiologic links as well as many comorbidities, is a subject of great relevance. It is important to know how these alterations impact on the structure and function of skeletal muscle because the changes in muscle phenotype have a major influence on the quality of life of the patients. This literature review aims to discuss the influence of a nontraditional axis involving kidney, bone, and muscle on skeletal muscle plasticity. In this axis, the kidneys play a role as the main site for vitamin D activation. Renal disease leads to a direct decrease in 1,25(OH)2-vitamin D, secondary to reduction in renal functional mass, and has an indirect effect, through phosphate retention, that contributes to stimulate fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) secretion by bone cells. FGF23 downregulates the renal synthesis of 1,25(OH)2-vitamin D and upregulates its metabolism. Skeletal production of FGF23 is also regulated by caloric intake: it is increased in obesity and decreased by caloric restriction, and these changes impact on 1,25(OH)2-vitamin D concentrations, which are decreased in obesity and increased after caloric restriction. Thus, both phosphate retention, that develops secondary to renal failure, and caloric intake influence 1,25(OH)2-vitamin D that in turn plays a key role in muscle anabolism.

Dopaminergic and glucocorticoid activity has been associated with reduced food consumption; however, their possible synergic action has not yet been studied. With the aim of examining the effect of the co-administration of the dopamine receptor D2 agonist bromocriptine and corticosterone on palatable food intake, male Wistar rats were administered either bromocriptine (1 mg/kg), corticosterone (2 mg/kg), bromocriptine + corticosterone (1 mg + 2 mg/kg) or a vehicle, with a fifth group used as a control. In all cases, substances were administered 30 min before exposure to standard food or palatable food, the latter high in carbohydrates [high carbohydrate food (HCF), 75%] or high-fat food (HFF, 67%). Food consumption and body weight were recorded daily. Results showed higher consumption of standard food but lower consumption of HCF and HFF in the groups that received bromocriptine, alone or in combination. In general, lower total kcal intake was observed in the bromocriptine and bromocriptine + corticosterone groups during the period of pharmacological treatment and following re-exposure to palatable food. The low HFF intake in the bromocriptine + corticosterone group persisted 10 days after the pharmacological treatment was interrupted. This effect suggests plastic changes in either the mechanisms involved in the incentive value of palatable food - particularly foods with high-fat content - or those that regulate lipid metabolism. Our findings suggest that homeostatic and reward mechanisms could be influenced by the co-participation of the dopaminergic and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal systems, and the macronutrient content of food.

Extracting reliable information on certain physical properties of materials, such as thermal transport, can be computationally very demanding. Aiming to overcome such difficulties in the particular case of lattice thermal conductivity (LTC) of 2D nanomaterials, we propose a simple, fast, and accurate semi-empirical approach for LTC calculation. The approach is based on parameterized thermochemical equations and Arrhenius-like fitting procedures, thus avoiding molecular dynamics or ab initio protocols, which frequently require computationally expensive simulations. As a proof of concept, we obtain the LTC of some prototypical physical systems, such as graphene (and other 2D carbon allotropes), hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), silicene, germanene, binary, and ternary BNC lattices and two examples of the fullerene network family. Our obtained values are in good agreement with other theoretical and experimental estimations, nonetheless, being derived in a rather straightforward way, at a fraction of the usual computational cost.

INTRODUCTION: Although often overlooked in clinical settings, accumulation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is thought to be a relevant risk factor for metabolic syndrome (MetS). METHODS: One hundred and seventeen patients undergoing non-oncological surgery were randomly recruited and classified as MetS + if presented 3 out of the 5 MetS components: waist circumference (WC), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP, respectively), serum glucose, insulin, triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, according International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Seventeen organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in adipose tissue samples. Linear, logistic and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression models, adjusted for age and sex, were performed. RESULTS: One third of the participants were males (36.8%) with a median age of 44 years, showing clinical evidences of MetS (35.0%). Adjusted linear regression models showed that WC correlated positively with all OCP concentrations. Higher fasting serum glucose levels were related to higher HCB and γ-HCH concentrations. The remaining OCPs and PCBs were not associated with this MetS component. HCB was inversely associated with HDL cholesterol levels, while PCB-180 was positively associated. HCB and γ-HCH concentrations were also positively correlated with DBP and SBP levels. PCB-138 was also positively associated with SBP. Adjusted logistic models revealed that exposure to HCB and γ-HCH were associated with increased odds of MetS [ORs (95%CI) 1.53 (1.22-1.92) and 1.39 (1.10-1.76) respectively; p < 0.01]. No associations were observed for the remaining POPs. WQS models showed a positive and significant mixture effect of POPs on the odds of MetS (exp [beta] = 2.34; p < 0.001), with γ-HCH (52.9%), o,p'-DDT (26.9%) and HCB (19.7%) driving the association. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support that POPs accumulated in VAT, specifically HCB and (gamma)-HCH, are associated with both isolated components and clinically diagnosed SMT.

BACKGROUND: Latin America has the highest Cesarean Section Rates (CSR) in the world. Robson's Ten Group Classification System (RTGCS) was developed to enable understanding the CSR in different groups of women, classified according to obstetric characteristics into one of ten groups. The size of each CS group may provide helpful data on quality of care in a determined region or setting. Data can potentially be used to compare the impact of conditions such as maternal morbidity on CSR. The objective of this study is to understand the impact of Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) on CSR in ten different groups of RTGCS. METHODS: Secondary analysis of childbirth information from 2018 to 2021, including 8 health facilities from 5 Latin American and Caribbean countries (Bolivia, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic), using a surveillance database (SIP-Perinatal Information System, in Spanish) implemented in different settings across Latin America. Women were classified into one of RTGCS. The frequency of each group and its respective CSR were described. Furthermore, the sample was divided into two groups, according to maternal outcomes: women without SMM and those who experienced SMM, considering Potentially Life-threatening Conditions, Maternal Near Miss and Maternal Death as the continuum of morbidity. RESULTS: Available data were obtained from 92,688 deliveries using the Robson Classification. Overall CSR was around 38%. Group 5 was responsible for almost one-third of cesarean sections. SMM occurred in 6.7% of cases. Among these cases, the overall CSR was almost 70% in this group. Group 10 had a major role (preterm deliveries). Group 5 (previous Cesarean section) had a very high CSR within the group, regardless of the occurrence of maternal morbidity (over 80%). CONCLUSION: Cesarean section rate was higher in women experiencing SMM than in those without SMM in Latin America. SMM was associated with higher Cesarean section rates, especially in groups 1 and 3. Nevertheless, group 5 was the major contributor to the overall CSR.

Exposure to toxic elements in drinking water, such as arsenic (As) and fluoride (F), starts at gestation and has been associated with memory and learning deficits in children. Studies in which rodents underwent mechanistic single exposure to As or F showed that the neurotoxic effects are associated with their capacity to disrupt redox balance, mainly by diminishing glutathione (GSH) levels, altering glutamate disposal, and altering glutamate receptor expression, which disrupts synaptic transmission. Elevated levels of As and F are common in groundwater worldwide. To explore the neurotoxicity of chronic exposure to As and F in drinking water, pregnant CD-1 mice were exposed to 2 mg/L As (sodium arsenite) and 25 mg/L F (sodium fluoride) alone or in combination. The male litter continued to receive exposure up to 30 or 90 days after birth. The effects of chronic exposure on GSH levels, transsulfuration pathway enzymatic activity, expression of cysteine/cystine transporters, glutamate transporters, and ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits as well as behavioral performance in the object recognition memory task were assessed. Combined exposure resulted in a significant reduction in GSH levels in the cortex and hippocampus at different times, decreased transsulfuration pathway enzyme activity, as well as diminished xCT protein expression. Altered glutamate receptor expression in the cortex and hippocampus and decreased transaminase enzyme activity were observed. These molecular alterations were associated with memory impairment in the object recognition task, which relies on these brain regions.

Rapid development of nanotechnology, particularly nanoparticles of pesticides, has facilitated the transformation of traditional agriculture. However, testing their effectiveness is essential for avoiding any environmental or adverse human health risk attributed to nanoparticle-based formulations, especially insecticides. Recently, organic nanoparticles of bifenthrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, were successfully synthesized by laser ablation of solids in liquid technique, with the most probable size of 5 nm. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of acute exposure to bifenthrin (BIF) or bifenthrin nanoparticles (BIFNP) on larval-adult viability, developmental time, olfactory capacity, longevity, productivity defined as the number of eggs per couple, and genotoxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. Data demonstrated that BIFNP produced a marked delay in developmental time, significant reduction in viability and olfactory ability compared to BIF. No marked differences were detected between BIF and BIFNP on longevity and productivity. Genotoxicity findings indicated that only BIF, at longer exposure duration increased genetic damage.

BACKGROUND: Photovoice is a form of visual ethnography intended to engage impacted communities in research followed by action to ameliorate the injustices under study. Photovoice has increased in use, especially in collaboration with Latinx communities addressing health inequities. The Latinx population comprises nearly 18% of the overall United States population and according to the census is projected to reach just under 30% by 2060. This diverse panethnic community faces significant structural barriers in accessing services. Racism and the resulting marginalization, specifically, contributes to limited access to recovery services and treatment. Making meaningful advances in substance use disorder training, intervention and policy necessitates learning alongside the Latinx community. METHODS: We partnered with a Latinx serving integrated behavioral health and primary care setting in Boston Massachusetts to explore barriers and facilitators to recovery using photovoice. Spanish-speaking Latinx adults with a substance use disorder participated. The group met for three photovoice sessions over a six-week period. Together group members critically analyzed photographs using the SHOWeD method. RESULTS: Findings indicate a sense of purpose and meaning, security, faith and housing are important elements of recovery. The results illustrated the importance of sources of connection in maintaining sobriety. Through this photovoice project, Latinx Spanish speaking participants highlighted barriers and facilitators to their substance use disorder recovery which spanned individual, community, and structural levels. CONCLUSIONS: The experiences and voices of the Latinx community are crucial to drive discussions that advance policy (e.g., housing stability and access), enhance providers' understanding of Latinx Spanish-speakers' substance use disorder recovery, and inform culturally and linguistically appropriate services. This study demonstrated that photovoice is highly acceptable and feasible among Latinx clients receiving substance use disorder services. Visual images related to housing, faith, etc. communicate challenges, power structures, as well as hopes to policymakers at multiple levels (e.g., institution/ agency, state).

Research examining the effects of traumatic events on undocumented Latinx immigrants often focuses on assessing posttraumatic stress disorder or general psychological distress, which may obscure the field's understanding of how trauma exposure impacts other common mental health disorders (e.g., anxiety, depression). This study sought to assess the cumulative, individual, and timing effects of immigration-related traumatic events on anxiety and depressive symptoms among undocumented Latinx immigrants. Participants were 253 undocumented Latinx immigrants recruited using respondent-driven sampling who reported their history of immigration-related trauma exposure and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Results suggest that cumulative immigration-related trauma was significantly associated with increases in anxiety and depressive symptoms, τ = .26. Significant positive correlations were found for cumulative trauma at each point in the immigration process (i.e., before immigration, while in transit to the United States, and while living in the United States) such that increases in the number of events were associated with higher anxiety and depressive symptom levels, τ = .11-.29. Trauma frequency differed throughout the immigration process such that some events more commonly occurred before immigration or during transit to the United States, whereas others occurred while an individual resided in the United States. Random forest algorithms uncovered differences in the relative importance of individual traumatic events in explaining the variance of depressive, R2 = .13, and anxiety symptoms, R2 = .14. The findings highlight the importance of providing trauma-informed care when treating anxiety and depression among undocumented Latinx immigrants and considering multidimensional epidemiological approaches in assessing immigration-related trauma.

Tuberculosis (TB), historically the most significant cause of human morbidity and mortality, has returned as the top infectious disease worldwide, under circumstances worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic's devastating effects on public health. Although Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causal agent, has been known of for more than a century, the development of tools to control it has been largely neglected. With the advancement of nanotechnology, the possibility of engineering tools at the nanoscale creates unique opportunities to exploit any molecular type. However, little attention has been paid to one of the major attributes of the pathogen, represented by the atypical coat and its abundant lipids. In this review, an overview of the lipids encountered in M. tuberculosis and interest in exploiting them for the development of TB control tools are presented. Then, the amalgamation of nanotechnology with mycobacterial lipids from both reported and future works are discussed.

Rambutan (Nepehelium lappaceum) is a tropical exotic fruit belonging to the Sapindaceae family. Several pathogens have been identified in rambutan causing different diseases on fruits, inflorescences, and branches (Serrato-Diaz et al., 2015, 2017, 2020) but few on leaves. From 2015 to 2021, a disease survey was conducted in one greenhouse in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and experimental rambutan field orchards of the USDA-ARS Tropical Agriculture Research Station located at Isabela, Corozal, Santa Isabel, and Adjuntas, Puerto Rico (Latitude: 18°12'28"N, 18°34'10'' N, 18°00'47''N, 18°16'35''N and Longitude: 67°08'17"W, 66°31'74'' W, 66°38'98''W, 66°72'32''W, respectively). Varieties Benjai, Gula Batu, Jitlee, R-134, R-156Y, R-162, R-167 and Rongren were sampled. Necrotic spots and leaf blight were commonly observed with a disease incidence of 80%. Diseased leaves showed necrosis starting from the apex and spreading through the lamina. Ten diseased leaves were collected from each location and sections of symptomatic tissue (5mm2) were disinfected and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and oatmeal agar (OA). Two representative isolates of Diaporthe tulliensis, A3 and A4, were obtained, purified, and identified morphologically and by PCR amplifications of three nuclear genes of the Internal Transcribed Spacer ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of the ribosomal DNA primers ITS5/ITS4, portions of the ß tubulin (BT) primers Bt2a/Bt2b and the translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) primers EF1728F/EF1986R. On PDA and OA colonies of isolates A3 and A4 were initially white and flat with sparse mycelia that turned yellowish-white to grey with age. Pycnidia were black with cream to pale yellow conidial droplets that exuded from ostioles. Hyaline, unicellular alpha conidia were oval to cylindrical, rounded at apex and obconically truncate at base. Alpha conidia (n = 50) for isolates of D. tulliensis were 4.9 to 5.9 µm long by 2.2 - 2.5 µm wide. DNA sequences of the ITS region and partial sequences of TEF1-α and BT genes were compared by BLASTN with Diaporthe sequences deposited in GenBank. ITS, BT and EF1-α sequences of isolates A3 and A4 (OP219651 and OP161553 for ITS region; OP222137 and OP168832 for TEF1-α; OP222136 and OP168831 for BT, respectively) were grouped to the holotype BRIP 62248a (Bootstrap BS=100) of Diaporthe tulliensis R.G. Shivas, Vawdrey & Y.P. Tan. Pathogenicity tests were conducted on six of six-months-old rambutan seedlings of R-167 variety. Three unwounded healthy non-detached leaves were inoculated per isolate with one 5mm mycelial disk from pure cultures grown on PDA. Rambutan seedlings were kept in a humid chamber using plastic bags for 8 days under greenhouse conditions. Two of six seedlings were used as controls and inoculated with PDA disks only. Eight and 14 days after inoculation (DAI), D. tulliensis isolates caused necrotic spots and leaf blight, on leaves. Diseased leaves turned from light to dark brown starting from the apex and spreading through the lamina with necrotic lesions ranging in size from 5 - 10 mm. Untreated controls showed no symptoms, and no fungi were re-isolated from tissue. D. tulliensis was re-isolated from diseased leaves, fulfilling Koch's postulates. D. tulliensis has been reported in Taiwan causing Diaporthe leaf spot in Boston Ivy (Huang, C. et al., 2021) and Bodhi trees (Li, K.Y. et al., 2022), as well as Jasmin stem canker (Ching Hsu, C. et al., 2022). It has been reported as causing leaf blight of coffee (Gong, J. L., et al., 2019), kiwifruit stem canker in China (Bai et al., 2017), and most recently causing cacao pod rot in Puerto Rico (Serrato-Diaz, L.M. et al., 2022). To our knowledge, this is the first report of Diaporthe tulliensis causing necrotic spots and leaf light on rambutan in Puerto Rico and often associated with a potassium deficiency in many parts of the world. Bananas (Musa spp.) are among the world's most economically important staple food crops. The most important fungal leaf diseases of Musa spp. worldwide are caused by the Sigatoka disease complex, which comprise black Sigatoka (Pseudocercospora fijiensis), yellow Sigatoka (P. musae), and Eumusae leaf spot (P. eumusae). Considering the rapid spreading rate of black Sigatoka in Puerto Rico after its first observation in 2004, a disease survey was conducted from 2018 to 2020 to evaluate the Sigatoka disease complex on the island. Sixty-one leaf samples showing Sigatoka-like symptoms were collected throughout the island for diagnosis by molecular approaches and fungal isolation. Molecular analysis using species-specific primers for P. fijiensis, P. musae and P. eumusae detected the presence of P. fijiensis in fifty leaf samples. Thirty-eight fungal isolates were collected and identified by morphology and genomic sequencing from various nuclear genes. The analysis identified 24 isolates as P. fijiensis, while the rest of the isolates belonged to the genus Cladosporium spp. and Cladosporium-like spp. (n=5), Neocordana musae (n=2), Zasmidium spp. (n=6), and Z. musigenum (n=1). The high frequency of P. fijiensis found in leaf samples and collected isolates suggest that black Sigatoka has displaced the yellow Sigatoka (P. musae) in Puerto Rico. Accurate identification of fungal species causing foliar diseases in Musa spp. will allow the establishment of quarantine regulations and specific management approaches in Puerto Rico.
