RESUMEN

In this research, we investigate the electromagnetic behavior of a metallic thin-film with a periodic array of subwavelength apertures when dielectric objects are located on it. The influence of size, geometry and optical properties of the objects on the transmission spectra is numerically analyzed. We study the sensitivity of this system to changes in the refractive index of the illuminated volume induced by the presence of objects with sizes from hundreds of nanometers (submicron-sized objects) to a few microns (micron-sized objects). Parameters such as the object volume within the penetration depth of the surface plasmon in the buffer medium or the contact surface between the object and the nanostructured substrate strongly affect the sensitivity. The proposed system models the presence of objects and their detection through the spectral shifts undergone by the transmission spectra. Also, we demonstrate that these can be used for obtaining information about the refractive index of a micron-sized object immersed in a buffer and located on the nanostructured sensitive surface. We believe that results found in this study can help biomedical researchers and experimentalists in the process of detecting and monitoring biological organisms of large sizes (notably, cells).

RESUMEN

This paper investigates the electronic structure of wurtzite (W) and rock-salt (RS) Zn1-xCoxO nanoparticles (NPs) by means of optical measurements under pressure (up to 25 GPa), X-ray absorption, and transmission electron microscopy. W-NPs were chemically synthesized at ambient conditions and RS-NPs were obtained by pressure-induced transformation of W-NPs. In contrast to the abrupt phase transition in W-Zn1-xCoxO as thin film or single crystal, occurring sharply at about 9 GPa, spectroscopic signatures of tetrahedral Co(2+) are observed in NPs from ambient pressure to about 17 GPa. Above this pressure, several changes in the absorption spectrum reveal a gradual and irreversible W-to-RS phase transition: (i) the fundamental band-to-band edge shifts to higher photon energies; (ii) the charge-transfer absorption band virtually disappears (or overlaps the fundamental edge); and (iii) the intensity of the crystal-field absorption peaks of Co(2+) around 2 eV decreases by an order of magnitude and shifts to 2.5 eV. After incomplete phase transition pressure cycles, the absorption edge of nontransformed W-NPs at ambient pressure exhibits a blue shift of 0.22 eV. This extra shift is interpreted in terms of quantum confinement effects. The observed gradual phase transition and metastability are related to the NP size distribution: the larger the NP, the lower the W-to-RS transition pressure.

RESUMEN

Since the crystal-field strength at the Cr(3+) site is very close to the excited-state crossover (ESCO), this work investigates the optical properties of Cr(3+)-doped Gd(3)Ga(5)O(12) (GGG) nanoparticles as a function of temperature and pressure in order to establish the effect of the ESCO on the optical behaviour of nanocrystalline GGG. Luminescence, time-resolved emission and lifetime measurements have been performed on GGG:0.5% Cr(3+) nanoparticles in the 25-300 K temperature range, as well as under hydrostatic pressure up to 20 GPa. We show how low temperature and high pressure progressively transforms Cr(3+)(4)T(2) --> (4)A(2) broadband emission into a ruby-like (2)E --> (4)A(2) luminescence. This behaviour together with the lifetime dependence on pressure and temperature are explained on the basis of the spin-orbit interaction between the (4)T(2) and (2)E states of Cr(3+).

RESUMEN

Magnetotactic bacteria are aquatic microorganisms with the ability to biomineralise membrane-enclosed magnetic nanoparticles, called magnetosomes. These magnetosomes are arranged into a chain that behaves as a magnetic compass, allowing the bacteria to align in and navigate along the Earth's magnetic field lines. According to the magneto-aerotactic hypothesis, the purpose of producing magnetosomes is to provide the bacteria with a more efficient movement within the stratified water column, in search of the optimal positions that satisfy their nutritional requirements. However, magnetosomes could have other physiological roles, as proposed in this work. Here we analyse the role of magnetosomes in the tolerance of Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense MSR-1 to transition metals (Co, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu). By exposing bacterial populations with and without magnetosomes to increasing concentrations of metals in the growth medium, we observe that the tolerance is significantly higher when bacteria have magnetosomes. The resistance mechanisms triggered in magnetosome-bearing bacteria under metal stress have been investigated by means of x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES). XANES experiments were performed both on magnetosomes isolated from the bacteria and on the whole bacteria, aimed to assess whether bacteria use magnetosomes as metal storages, or whether they incorporate the excess metal in other cell compartments. Our findings reveal that the tolerance mechanisms are metal-specific: Mn, Zn and Cu are incorporated in both the magnetosomes and other cell compartments; Co is only incorporated in the magnetosomes, and Ni is incorporated in other cell compartments. In the case of Co, Zn and Mn, the metal is integrated in the magnetosome magnetite mineral core.
