Bayesian models of perception posit that percepts result from the optimal integration of new sensory information and prior expectations. In turn, prominent models of perceptual disturbances in psychosis frame hallucination-like phenomena as percepts excessively biased toward perceptual prior expectations. Despite mounting support for this notion, whether this hallucination-related prior bias results secondarily from imprecise sensory representations at early processing stages or directly from alterations in perceptual priors-both suggested candidates potentially consistent with Bayesian models-remains to be tested. Using modified interval timing paradigms designed to arbitrate between these alternative hypotheses, we show in human participants (16 females and 24 males) from a nonclinical population that hallucination proneness correlates with a circumscribed form of prior bias that reflects selective differences in weighting of contextual prior variance, a prior bias that is unrelated to the effect of sensory noise and to a separate index of sensory resolution. Our results thus suggest distinct mechanisms underlying prior biases in perceptual inference and favor the notion that hallucination proneness could reflect direct alterations in the representation or use of perceptual priors independent of sensory noise.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Current theories of psychosis posit that hallucination proneness results from excessive influence of prior expectations on perception. It is not clear whether this prior bias represents a primary top-down process related to the representation or use of prior beliefs or instead a secondary bottom-up process stemming from imprecise sensory representations at early processing stages. To address this question, we examined interval timing behaviors captured by Bayesian perceptual-inference models. Our data support the notion that excessive influence of prior expectations associated with hallucination propensity is not directly secondary to sensory imprecision and is instead more consistent with a primary top-down process. These results help refine computational theories of psychosis and may contribute to the development of improved intervention targets.

BACKGROUND: Frailty, defined as physical performance impairment, is a common condition in older adults and can anticipate the development of sarcopenia, a geriatric syndrome characterized by loss of muscle strength and mass. microRNAs (miRNAs) are short molecules of RNA endowed with the ability to modulate gene expression; miRNAs are present in serum and are considered potential biomarkers for several diseases. Serum concentration of miR-451a, miR-93-5p, miR-155-5p, miR-421-3p, miR-425-5p, miR-495-3p and miR-744-5p was recently shown to be altered in sarcopenic patients. METHODS: We verified if a particular miRNAs pattern could be detected in frailty as well by analyzing these molecules in 50 frail and 136 robust subjects. Additionally, a subgroup of these subjects (15 frail and 30 robust) underwent a 12-week program based on a multicomponent exercise protocol (VIVIFRAIL) consisting of resistance training, gait retraining, and balance training. After the program, serum miRNAs concentration was measured again, to verify whether the physical activity had an effect on their concentration. Moreover, clinical characteristics and indicators of physical performance of all subjects were compared before and after intervention to verify the effect of the VIVIFRAIL program. RESULTS: At the end of the multicomponent exercise program, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score as well right and left handgrip (p < 0.05) were significantly increased in frail subjects; right and left handgrip significantly were increased also in robust subjects (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the variation of SPPB was significantly higher in frail compared to robust subjects (p < 0.0001). Moreover, at the end of the program, in frail compared to robust subjects: miR-451a serum concentration was significantly increased (frail: 6.59 × 104; 1.12 × 104-2.5 × 105 c/ng; robust: 2.31 × 104; 1.94 × 103-2.01 × 105 c/ng) (p < 0.05); and 2) miR-93-5p and miR-495-3p serum concentration was reduced, whereas that of miR-155-5p was significantly increased (p < 0.05 in both cases). Serum concentration of miR-93-5p and miR-495-3p was decreased, and that of miR-155-5p was increased at the end of the program in robust subjects alone, statistical significance being reached for miR-93-5p alone (p = 0.02). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that serum miR-451a should be investigated as a potential biomarker for frailty and show that the VIVIFRAIL multicomponent program modulates circulatory miRNAs expression, at least in older adults.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic, non-essential element for living organisms, frequently present in high concentrations in soils from industrial areas. The total, dissolved, and labile Hg concentrations in garden soils and their accumulation in edible vegetables (onion, garlic, lettuce, and parsley) grown on contaminated soils in localities situated a former mining area were evaluated. The labile Hg fraction was estimated by diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT). The soil-to-vegetable transfer factors, as well as the health risk by exposure to Hg, were calculated based on the labile Hg concentration in soil. The total Hg concentration in soil varied widely (0.11-3.77 mg kg-1), Hg in soil solution ranged between 2.14 and 20.2 µg L-1 and labile Hg between 1.13 and 18.6 µg L-1. About 36-96% (84% on average) of the Hg concentration in soil solution was found in labile form. Multivariate analysis revealed significant correlations between the labile Hg concentration in soil and Hg accumulated in vegetables. The hazard indices showed that, although the study area is affected by legacy pollution, exposure to soil and consumption of locally grown vegetables do not pose health risks.

BACKGROUND: Developing a noninvasive clinical test to accurately diagnose kidney allograft rejection is critical to improve allograft outcomes. Urinary exosomes, tiny vesicles released into the urine that carry parent cells' proteins and nucleic acids, reflect the biologic function of the parent cells within the kidney, including immune cells. Their stability in urine makes them a potentially powerful tool for liquid biopsy and a noninvasive diagnostic biomarker for kidney-transplant rejection. METHODS: Using 192 of 220 urine samples with matched biopsy samples from 175 patients who underwent a clinically indicated kidney-transplant biopsy, we isolated urinary exosomal mRNAs and developed rejection signatures on the basis of differential gene expression. We used crossvalidation to assess the performance of the signatures on multiple data subsets. RESULTS: An exosomal mRNA signature discriminated between biopsy samples from patients with all-cause rejection and those with no rejection, yielding an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.93 (95% CI, 0.87 to 0.98), which is significantly better than the current standard of care (increase in eGFR AUC of 0.57; 95% CI, 0.49 to 0.65). The exosome-based signature's negative predictive value was 93.3% and its positive predictive value was 86.2%. Using the same approach, we identified an additional gene signature that discriminated patients with T cell-mediated rejection from those with antibody-mediated rejection (with an AUC of 0.87; 95% CI, 0.76 to 0.97). This signature's negative predictive value was 90.6% and its positive predictive value was 77.8%. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings show that mRNA signatures derived from urinary exosomes represent a powerful and noninvasive tool to screen for kidney allograft rejection. This finding has the potential to assist clinicians in therapeutic decision making.

Over the years, natural-based scaffolds have presented impressive results for bone tissue engineering (BTE) application. Further, outstanding interactions have been observed during the interaction of graphene oxide (GO)-reinforced biomaterials with both specific cell cultures and injured bone during in vivo experimental conditions. This research hereby addresses the potential of fish gelatin/chitosan (GCs) hybrids reinforced with GO to support in vitro osteogenic differentiation and, further, to investigate its behavior when implanted ectopically. Standard GCs formulation was referenced against genipin (Gp) crosslinked blend and 0.5 wt.% additivated GO composite (GCsGp/GO 0.5 wt.%). Pre-osteoblasts were put in contact with these composites and induced to differentiate in vitro towards mature osteoblasts for 28 days. Specific bone makers were investigated by qPCR and immunolabeling. Next, CD1 mice models were used to assess de novo osteogenic potential by ectopic implantation in the subcutaneous dorsum pocket of the animals. After 4 weeks, alkaline phosphate (ALP) and calcium deposits together with collagen synthesis were investigated by biochemical analysis and histology, respectively. Further, ex vivo materials were studied after surgery regarding biomineralization and morphological changes by means of qualitative and quantitative methods. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy underlined the newly fashioned material structuration by virtue of mineralized extracellular matrix. Specific bone markers determination stressed the osteogenic phenotype of the cells populating the material in vitro and successfully differentiated towards mature bone cells. In vivo results of specific histological staining assays highlighted collagen formation and calcium deposits, which were further validated by micro-CT. It was observed that the addition of 0.5 wt.% GO had an overall significant positive effect on both in vitro differentiation and in vivo bone cell recruitment in the subcutaneous region. These data support the GO bioactivity in osteogenesis mechanisms as being self-sufficient to elevate osteoblast differentiation and bone formation in ectopic sites while lacking the most common osteoinductive agents.

Different types of internal implant-abutment connections, namely hexagon and conical, have been used for implant restoration. However, data regarding the benefits of these internal connections in terms of clinical outcomes are scarce. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to compare radiographic marginal bone loss (RMBL) and associated implant complications between implants with internal hexagon (IH) connections and those with internal conical (IC) connections. Forty-nine patients with 98 implants (2 per patient) placed in the posterior mandible were recruited. All implants were inserted in pairs into solid D2 bone according to a randomized sequence; the first patient received an IH connection implant on the mesial side, while the second patient received an IC connection implant on the mesial side. Each patient received 1 implant with an IH connection and 1 with an IC connection, placed side by side. Four months after placement, all implants were loaded with single screw-retained ceramic restorations with IH or IC connections. RMBL and complications, including implant/prosthesis failure, were recorded at the time of implant loading (baseline) and at 6, 12, and 36 months after loading. The results revealed no significant between-group differences in RMBL (P = .74), gingival bleeding on probing (P = .29), and complications (P = .32). Thus, the type of internal implant-abutment connection did not affect clinical outcomes, including RMBL and implant/prosthesis failure. Future studies should additionally evaluate long-term prosthesis-related complications, such as screw loosening and fracture, between the 2 types of internal connections.

The aim of this paper is to assess the water quality from several lakes in Rodnei Mountains National Park, in order to establish the extent to which the anthropic activities, such as livestock and tourism affect the water characteristics. The paper presents the quality status of 13 water samples, collected from different mountain lakes from Romania, by monitoring 25 quality indicators, 21 metals and metalloids. The results indicate relatively high content of NH4+ (0.96 mg/L), NO2- (0.240 mg/L), Ca (38.44 mg/L), Mg (4.35 mg/L), Fe (288 mg/L), Cu (34.46 µg/L) and high values for turbidity (5.31 NTU), chemical oxygen demand (10.00 mgO2/L) and suspended materials (88.0 mg/L). Microbiological analyses were performed for 14 types of bacteria. In some samples, the faecal coliforms (1100 bacteria/mL), faecal streptococci (39 bacteria/mL) and aerobic heterotrophic bacteria at 37 °C (300 bacteria/mL) were relatively in a high content. The metal pollution indices (heavy metal pollution index -HPI, heavy metal evaluation index -HEI and the degree of contamination -Cd) indicated as well that the water samples presented no metal pollution. Values ranged from 5.17 to 27.84 for HPI, 0.55 to 5.07 for HEI and -8.45 to -3.93 for Cd were obtained. The water quality index (WQI) indicated excellent and good quality for the studied samples, with a mean of 22.6 and a range from 11.4 to 46.9.

RESUMEN

Nanotechnology approaches play an important role in developing novel and efficient carriers for biomedical applications. Peptides are particularly appealing to generate such nanocarriers because they can be rationally designed to serve as building blocks for self-assembling nanoscale structures with great potential as therapeutic or diagnostic delivery vehicles. In this review, we describe peptide-based nanoassemblies and highlight features that make them particularly attractive for the delivery of nucleic acids to host cells or improve the specificity and sensitivity of probes in diagnostic imaging. We outline the current state in the design of peptides and peptide-conjugates and the paradigms of their self-assembly into well-defined nanostructures, as well as the co-assembly of nucleic acids to form less structured nanoparticles. Various recent examples of engineered peptides and peptide-conjugates promoting self-assembly and providing the structures with wanted functionalities are presented. The advantages of peptides are not only their biocompatibility and biodegradability, but the possibility of sheer limitless combinations and modifications of amino acid residues to induce the assembly of modular, multiplexed delivery systems. Moreover, functions that nature encoded in peptides, such as their ability to target molecular recognition sites, can be emulated repeatedly in nanoassemblies. Finally, we present recent examples where self-assembled peptide-based assemblies with "smart" activity are used in vivo. Gene delivery and diagnostic imaging in mouse tumor models exemplify the great potential of peptide nanoassemblies for future clinical applications.

Pickering foams are foams stabilized by particles and are generally known to have good stability. A special subclass of particle-stabilized foams includes stimuli-responsive Pickering foams that can be formed or deconstructed by applying an external stimuli or changing the environmental conditions; such intelligent particles could find use in many practical applications. Here, we synthesized surfactant-free biocompatible poly[2(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDEAEMA) hydrogel particles (HGPs) by emulsion polymerization. The morphology, structure, and surface charge of the HGPs were characterized by TEM, DLS, and the zeta potential, respectively. We have observed that the pH values of the aqueous solution have a strong influence on the formation of the Pickering foams in the presence of PDEAEMA HGPs. Namely, at pH values ≤4.0 no Pickering foams were produced, while at pH values >4.0 stable Pickering foams were formed. Moreover, the height, size and bubble size distribution of Pickering foams are strongly influenced by the pH values of aqueous solution and PDEAEMA HGPs concentration. The formed Pickering foams in basic aqueous solution can all be conveniently deconstructed by changing the pH values to below 4.0. Interestingly, the dried lamellas of the Pickering foams were constituted by either monolayers or multilayers of PDEAEMA HGPs as demonstrated by SEM.

Constitutive proteasomes (c-20S) are ubiquitously expressed cellular proteases that degrade polyubiquitinated proteins and regulate cell functions. An isoform of proteasome, the immunoproteasome (i-20S), is highly expressed in human T cells, dendritic cells (DCs), and B cells, suggesting that it could be a potential target for inflammatory diseases, including those involving autoimmunity and alloimmunity. Here, we describe DPLG3, a rationally designed, noncovalent inhibitor of the immunoproteasome chymotryptic subunit ß5i that has thousands-fold selectivity over constitutive ß5c. DPLG3 suppressed cytokine release from blood mononuclear cells and the activation of DCs and T cells, diminished accumulation of effector T cells, promoted expression of exhaustion and coinhibitory markers on T cells, and synergized with CTLA4-Ig to promote long-term acceptance of cardiac allografts across a major histocompatibility barrier. These findings demonstrate the potential value of using brief posttransplant immunoproteasome inhibition to entrain a long-term response favorable to allograft survival as part of an immunomodulatory regimen that is neither broadly immunosuppressive nor toxic.

This paper presented a groundwater quality monitoring in Seini town, North-West of Romania, by assessing 18 physicochemical parameters (pH, EC, COD, turbidity, ht, NH4+, NO2-, NO3-, Cl-, Al, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Ni and As) from 12 private dug wells and 5 private drilled wells, each with unique characteristics and used as a drinking water source. The pollution, quality status and risk assessment of drinking water sources were assessed, by pollution, quality and risk indices. Statistical methodology and cluster analysis were applied in order to elaborate and improve upon a mathematical model. 2 D and 3 D mathematical models were elaborated to show the functions that better describe the dependence between a set of physicochemical parameters. Heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) results indicated that the studied drinking water sources presented no heavy metal contamination. Human health risk assessment indices showed that the consumption of studied waters presented no non-carcinogenic risk at heavy metals, but potential non-carcinogenic risk at NO3-. The water quality index (WQI) classifies the majority of samples as waters with excellent quality and the minority of samples in waters with poor and very poor quality. By geostatistical techniques, the spatial patterns of the main physicochemical indicators were established for both the surface of the aquifer and its depth. The aim of the water quality study was to establish the toxicity degree of water, its influence on human health and to inform the population regarding the use of individual water sources.

Maslinic acid is a pentacyclic triterpene with a plethora of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, and antitumor effects. New derivatives with improved properties and broad-spectrum activity can be obtained following structural changes of the compound. The present study was aimed to characterize a benzylamide derivative of maslinic acid-benzyl (2α, 3ß) 2,3-diacetoxy-olean-12-en-28-amide (EM2)-with respect to the anti-angiogenic and anti-inflammatory effects in two in vivo experimental models. Consequently, the compound showed good tolerability and lack of irritation in the chorioallantoic membrane assay with no impairment of the normal angiogenic process during the tested stages of development. In the acute ear inflammation murine model, application of EM2 induced a mild anti-inflammatory effect that was potentiated by the association with zinc chloride (ZnCl2). A decrease in dermal thickness of mice ears was observed when EM2 and ZnCl2 were applied separately or in combination. Moreover, hyalinization of the dermis appeared only when EM2 was associated with ZnCl2, strongly suggesting the role of their combination in wound healing.

In this study Fe3O4@C matrix was obtained by combustion method and used hereafter as adsorbent for paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid removal from aqueous solutions. The Fe3O4@C matrix was characterized by electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Two kinetic models of pseudo first-order and pseudo-second-order for both paracetamol and acetylsalicylic acid were studied. The experimental data were investigated by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson adsorption isotherm models. The adsorption followed the Redlich-Peterson and pseudo-second-order models with correlation coefficients R2 = 0.98593 and R2 = 0.99996, respectively, for the adsorption of paracetamol; for the acetylsalicylic acid, the adsorption followed the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order model, with correlation coefficients R2 = 0.99421 and R2 = 0.99977, respectively. The equilibrium was quickly reached after approximately 1h for the paracetamol adsorption and approximately 2h for acetylsalicylic acid adsorption. According to the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacity of the magnetic matrix was 142.01 mg·g-1 for the retention of paracetamol and 234.01 mg·g-1 for the retention of acetylsalicylic acid. The benefits of using the Fe3O4@C matrix are the low cost of synthesis and its easy and fast separation from solution by using an NdBFe magnet.

This article assesses the surface water quality of the Strîmtori-Firiza reservoir by analyzing 14 physicochemical parameters among 9 metals in 18 sampling points. A series of possible reservoir pollutants were identified, depending on the nature of the pollutants and their loading. The novelty of the paper consists in the broad spectrum of investigations that includes spatial distribution cluster analysis and mathematical modeling. This article presents an innovative method of assessing the distributions of the metal loads as maps of metal distribution that are in accordance with the developed mathematical models that aim to present the pollutant distribution and the degree of correlation between the physicochemical indicators. The clusters were generated using Ward's and Nearest Neighbor methods that are less used in the studies concerning the analysis of water quality. Measures for maintaining the quality of the water reservoir are proposed considering the importance of the reservoir as source for drinking/industrial water.

PURPOSE: To establish a protocol for reducing the drilling sequence during implant site preparation based on temperature and insertion torque. The traditional conventional drilling sequence (used several drills with 0.6-mm increment each time) was compared with the proposed short drilling protocol (only used 2 drills: initial and final drill). MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred drilling osteotomies were performed in bovine and porcine bones. Sets of 2 osteotomy sites were created in 5 bone densities using 2 types of drilling protocols. Thermographic pictures were captured throughout all drilling procedures and analyzed using ThermaCAM Researcher Professional 2.10. Torque values were determined during drilling by measuring electrical input and drill speed. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in bone temperature between the conventional and short drilling protocols during implant site preparation (analysis of variance P = 0.0008). However, there were no significant differences between the 2 types of drilling protocols for both implant diameters. Implant site preparation time was significantly reduced when using the short drilling protocol compared with the conventional drilling protocol (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of the study, the short drilling protocol proposed herein may represent a safe approach for implant site preparation.

BACKGROUND: The modern management of phenylketonuria (PKU) consists of generalized newborn screening (NBS) for hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA), confirmation of HPA in children detected in the NBS, introduction of dietary treatment in the first weeks of life, followed by monitoring the treatment of PKU for decades to maintain phenylalaninemia within the limits that will not affect the brain. The present study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of two chromatographic methodologies for determination of plasma Phe level in the routine management of PKU: the two dimensional thin layer chromatography (2D - TLC) and the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedures, respectively. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Samples of blood from 23 children with HPA detected by neonatal screening or with confirmed PKU who received treatment by low-Phe diet were analyzed to estimate the plasma Phe level by the two chromatographic procedures. RESULTS: In case of three subjects the very low concentrations of plasma Phe could not be detected by the 2D - TLC methodology, since the spot was not visible on the chromatogram. In four patients the differences between the values of plasma Phe determined by the two methodologies are not statistically significant, while in fifteen subjects the differences are highly statistically significant. This is due to the greater errors that appear in the case of 2D - TLC methodology. In the range of concentrations of plasma Phe higher than 360 µmol/L (which is the cut-off value for HPA), although in four cases there were statistically significant differences in the level of plasma Phe determined by the two methodologies, the value obtained by the 2D - TLC methodology was high enough to influence the decision of changing the diet so that HPA is kept under control. In addition, the intense spot of Phe on the 2D - TLC chromatogram may be detected even by un unexperienced laboratory specialist. CONCLUSION: The HPLC procedure for measurement of plasma Phe level is very suitable to be used in the routine management of PKU. The 2D - TLC procedure may be accompanied by relatively high errors; however, it detects patients with severe PKU.

Microsaccades are high-velocity fixational eye movements, with special roles in perception and cognition. The default microsaccade detection method is to determine when the smoothed eye velocity exceeds a threshold. We have developed a new method, Bayesian microsaccade detection (BMD), which performs inference based on a simple statistical model of eye positions. In this model, a hidden state variable changes between drift and microsaccade states at random times. The eye position is a biased random walk with different velocity distributions for each state. BMD generates samples from the posterior probability distribution over the eye state time series given the eye position time series. Applied to simulated data, BMD recovers the "true" microsaccades with fewer errors than alternative algorithms, especially at high noise. Applied to EyeLink eye tracker data, BMD detects almost all the microsaccades detected by the default method, but also apparent microsaccades embedded in high noise-although these can also be interpreted as false positives. Next we apply the algorithms to data collected with a Dual Purkinje Image eye tracker, whose higher precision justifies defining the inferred microsaccades as ground truth. When we add artificial measurement noise, the inferences of all algorithms degrade; however, at noise levels comparable to EyeLink data, BMD recovers the "true" microsaccades with 54% fewer errors than the default algorithm. Though unsuitable for online detection, BMD has other advantages: It returns probabilities rather than binary judgments, and it can be straightforwardly adapted as the generative model is refined. We make our algorithm available as a software package.

To achieve enantioselective electroanalysis either chiral electrodes or chiral media are needed. High enantiodiscrimination properties can be granted by the "inherent chirality" strategy of developing molecular materials in which the stereogenic element responsible for chirality coincides with the molecular portion responsible for their specific properties, an approach recently yielding outstanding performances as electrode surfaces. Inherently chiral ionic liquids (ICILs) have now been prepared starting from atropisomeric 3,3'-bicollidine, synthesized from inexpensive reagents, resolved into antipodes without need of chiral HPLC and converted into long-chain dialkyl salts with melting points below room temperature. Both the new ICILs and shorter family terms, solid at room temperature, employed as low-concentration additives in achiral ILs, afford impressive enantioselection for the enantiomers of different probes on achiral electrodes, regularly increasing with additive concentration.

OBJECTIVE: To compare two chromatographic methodologies for determination of plasma phenylalanine (Phe) and their usefulness for diagnosing hyperphenylalaninemia (HPA) and phenylketonuria (PKU). METHODS: The plasma amino acids were isolated and concentrated from blood collected from infants with HPA detected by newborn screening. The plasma Phe was determined in parallel by HPLC and by image-densitometry of 2D-TLC plates. RESULTS: Typical examples of 2D-TLC plates and HPLC chromatograms from infants with HPA and PKU are presented and evaluated. The Phe spot was visible on 2D - TLC plates at Phe concentrations higher than 300 µmol/L. The standard calibration curve traced after image-densitometry of the Phe spot presented high dispersion of values at each concentration of Phe, high SD values, the equation of the curve having a low R-squared value (0.862). In contrast, the standard calibration curve obtained by HPLC shows linearity on the range of concentrations from 100 - 16,000 µmol/L, extremely small SD values, the equation of the curve has a very high R-squared value (0.999). CONCLUSIONS: The HPLC methodology is appropriate to confirm HPA detected by newborn or selective screening of PKU. The 2D - TLC methodology is adequate to detect patients with severe PKU.

Impaired hair at blepharo-ciliaris area by dermatophytes is a rare clinical entity. This infection is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed, being mistakenly referred to as an infection of bacterial origin. Herein, we present a rare case of tinea blepharo-ciliaris associated with tinea barbae in an adult male. Considering the two lesions of the patient, mycological examination was performed by phenotypic methods, including environmental electronic scanning microscopy. Trichophyton interdigitale zoophilic strain was identified as the etiological agent by direct examination of the hair, primary culture analysis of the developed colonies and PCR sequencing of the ITS1 region of the rDNA gene. Homology search showed 100% similarity with T. interdigitale (GenBank accession number: KC595993), Arthroderma vanbreuseghemii (GenBank accession number: JQ407190) and zoophilic strain of T. interdigitale (GenBank accession number: AY062119.1.). Four weeks of oral and local treatment with itraconazole (100 mg twice a day) and fluconazole 0.3% (eyedrops) induced complete remission. To our knowledge, this is the first report of tinea blepharo-ciliaris associated with tinea barbae in Romania.
