Sacha inchi oil is a high-quality product with market potential and a wealth of bioactive compounds beneficial for food and health. The main objective of this work was to evaluate three quality parameters, stability, chromatic parameters and total carotenoids of commercial oils obtained from Sacha inchi seeds. The free acidity and peroxide value of all samples studied were in ranges of 0.16-1.86 (% α-linolenic acid) and 1.87-17.47 (meq O2/kg), respectively. While K232 value for the samples ranged from 1.96 to 2.29, the K270 value was between 0.08 to 0.20 and ∆K in the range of - 0.005 to 0.005. Regarding color, Sacha inchi oils showed high h ab and low C ab ∗ values, and the L * values were from 91 to near 100 units. Samples were located in the second quadrant of the CIELAB a * b *-color diagram. These characteristics corresponds to low-vivid light-yellow colors. Carotenoid content of Sacha inchi oils was 0.31-9.10 mg/kg. The oxidative stability using Rancimat (100 °C, 20 L/h air flow rate) of these oils presented an average value of 5.6 h. Pearson's coefficients indicate a very high correlation coefficient between the values of Car (carotenoid) versus b * (yellow area) (r = 0.991). The results of this study provide better understanding of the quality, stability, chromatic intensities and carotenoid contents of Sacha inchi oil that is marketed in Peru.

This work includes the evaluation of 168 samples of raspberries 'Glen Lyon', representing whole maturation period, by colorimetric and near infrared imaging techniques, as well as the quantification of total phenols, total anthocyanins and antioxidant activity by chemical methods. Samples showed significant differences depending on the maturation stage using CIELAB colour parameters and total anthocyanins content. The application of partial least squares regression allowed predicting the chemical features from image analysis data, with coefficients of determination (R2) up to 0.75. The best prediction for total anthocyanins including colorimetric data was observed. The proposed methodology can be used as a reference method for assessing important quality attributes of raspberries. Moreover, it is useful, rapid and accurate automatic inspection method.

Hip fractures represent a major public health challenge worldwide. Multinational studies using a common methodology are scarce. We aimed to estimate the incidence rates (IRs) and trends of hip/femur fractures over the period 2003-2009 in five European countries. The study was performed using seven electronic health-care records databases (DBs) from Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, based on the same protocol. Yearly IRs of hip/femur fractures were calculated for the general population and for those aged ≥50 years. Trends over time were evaluated using linear regression analysis for both crude and standardized IRs. Sex- and age-standardized IRs for the UK, Netherlands, and Spanish DBs varied from 9 to 11 per 10,000 person-years for the general population and from 22 to 26 for those ≥50 years old; the German DB showed slightly higher IRs (about 13 and 30, respectively), whereas the Danish DB yielded IRs twofold higher (19 and 52, respectively). IRs increased exponentially with age in both sexes. The ratio of females to males was ≥2 for patients aged ≥70-79 years in most DBs. Statistically significant trends over time were only shown for the UK DB (CPRD) (+0.7% per year, P < 0.01) and the Danish DB (-1.4% per year, P < 0.01). IRs of hip/femur fractures varied greatly across European countries. With the exception of Denmark, no decreasing trend was observed over the study period.

PURPOSE: Drug utilization studies have applied different methods to various data types to describe medication use, which hampers comparisons across populations. The aim of this study was to describe the time trends in antidepressant prescribing in the last decade and the variation in the prevalence, calculated in a uniform manner, in seven European electronic healthcare databases. METHODS: Annual prevalence per 10,000 person-years (PYs) was calculated for 2001-2009 in databases from Spain, Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom (UK), and the Netherlands. Prevalence data were stratified according to age, sex, antidepressant type (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors [SSRIs] or tricyclic antidepressants [TCAs]) and major indications. RESULTS: The age- and sex-standardized prevalence was lowest in the two Dutch (391 and 429 users per 10,000 PYs) and highest in the two UK (913 and 936 users per 10,000 PYs) populations in 2008. The prevalence in the Danish, German, and Spanish populations was 637, 618, and 644 users per 10,000 PY respectively. Antidepressants were prescribed most often in 20- to 60-year-olds in the two UK populations compared with the others. SSRIs were prescribed more often than TCAs in all except the German population. In the majority of countries we observed an increasing trend of antidepressant prescribing over time. Two different methods identifying recorded indications yielded different ranges of proportions of patients recorded with the specific indication (15-57% and 39-69% for depression respectively). CONCLUSION: Despite applying uniform methods, variations in the prevalence of antidepressant prescribing were obvious in the different populations. Database characteristics and clinical factors may both explain these variations.

Camu-camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a tropical fruit known for its content of bioactive compounds. This study aimed to evaluate physicochemically, morphologically, andsensorialpowders from camu-camu obtained by spray-drying at two inlet temperatures (150 °C and 180 °C) with three encapsulating agents (maltodextrin, whey protein and a 50:50 mixture of both) and by freeze-drying of whole fruit. The use of maltodextrin protected bet anthocyanins (cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) and delphinidin-3-glucoside (D3G)), but whey protein showed a better protective effect on ascorbic and malic acids. These facts were confirmed during the storage stability test, finding that relative humidity is a critical variable in preserving the bioactive compounds of camu-camu powders. The powders with the highest content of bioactive compounds were added to a yogurt and a white grape juice, and then sensory evaluated. The bioaccessibility studies in gastric and intestinal phases showed better recovery percentages of bioactive compounds in camu-camu powders (up to 60.8 %) and beverages (up to 90 %) for C3G, D3G, ascorbic acid, and malic acid than in the fruit juice. Dehydration of camu-camu (M. dubia) is a strategy to increase the bioactive compounds stability, modulate the fruit sensory properties, and improve their bioavailability after incorporation in food matrices.

AIMS: To assess whether there is a change in the prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation after the strict lockdown measures due to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain, and to assess which are the factors associated with the incidence of a depressive episode or suicidal ideation during the lockdown. METHODS: Data from a longitudinal adult population-based cohort from Madrid and Barcelona were analysed (n = 1103). Face-to-face home-based (pre-pandemic) and telephone interviews were performed. Depression and suicidal ideation were assessed through an adaptation of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 3.0). Population prevalence estimates and multivariable logistic regressions were computed. RESULTS: Prevalence rates of depression changed significantly from before to after the COVID-19 outbreak (from 3.06% to 12.00%; p = 0.01) and per sex and age groups. Individuals reporting COVID-19 concerns (odds ratio [OR] = 3.11; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.45-6.69) and those feeling loneliness (OR = 1.99; 95% CI = 1.52-2.61) during the lockdown were at increased risk of developing depression during the confinement. Resilience showed a protective effect against the risk of depression (OR = 0.57; 95% CI = 0.39-0.83), while individuals perceiving social support during the confinement were at lower risk of developing suicidal thoughts (OR = 0.21; 95% CI = 0.09-0.46). Greater disability during the lockdown was also associated with the risk of suicidal ideation (OR = 2.77; 95% CI = 1.53-5.03). CONCLUSIONS: Continuous reinforcement of mental health preventive and intervening measures is of global importance, particularly among vulnerable groups who are experiencing the most distress. Future research should strive to evaluate the long-term effects of the COVID-19 crisis on mental health.

Colombian purple corn Zea mays L. by-products have been chemically characterized. To achieve this, after Amberlite XAD-7 purification and Sephadex LH-20 fractionation, the accurate anthocyanin and flavonol profile using UHPL-DAD-ESI-MS, total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA), polyphenols using Folin-Ciocalteau reduction capacity (FCRC), and antioxidant activity (DPPH and TEAC) of each fraction were performed. Cob and leaves illustrated a more complete flavonoid profile and a higher content of anthocyanins and flavonols, strongly related to the highest reducing power and radical scavenging activity compared to grains. Furthermore, the most antioxidant fractions corresponded to the higher molecular weight compounds. The cob and leaves were enriched in cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-malonyl-hexoside, and peonidin-3-O-glucoside, peonidin-3-O-(6''-malonyl-glucoside). The purification and fractionation allowed us to establish the chemical and antioxidant characterization, and the resulting revalorization, of purple corn by-products for the first time, and to have available pure fractions of Zea mays L. for a wide diversity of industries.

Recently, the search for alternative proteins endogenous to grapes to be used as wine colour protecting agents became an important research trend. In this study, the molecular interaction between the grape seed 11S globulin from winemaking by-product and malvidin-3-O-glucoside was investigated by fluorescence, differential colorimetry and molecular modelling. Fluorescence studies revealed the formation of grape seed protein- pigment complex whose KS was 8.5 × 104 M-1 and binding sites, n = 1.3. Malvidin-3-O-glucoside showed darker and more vivid bluish colour of in the presence of 11S globulin, suggesting the flavylium cation protection in a hydrophobic region of the protein. Docking analysis and molecular dynamics simulation indicated that malvidin-3-O-glucoside interacts mainly with the acidic subunit (40 kDa) of the 11S globulin monomer (60 kDa). An average of two hydrogen bonds and Van der Wall forces were the main interaction forces found for the protein-pigment complex, whose stability was confirmed by root-means-square deviation.

Grape seed flour by-product (GSBP) is an economic and renewable source of proteins, increasingly being explored due to interesting technological application such as colour protection in rich-anthocyanins beverages. Globulin-like proteins from GSBP were characterised by proteomic and computational studies. MALDI TOF/TOF analysis revealed the presence of two 11S globulins (acid and basic), whose 3D structures have been elucidated for the first time in Vitis vinifera L. grape seeds by using homology models and molecular dynamics. The secondary structure showed 11 α-helices and 25 ß-sheets for acid and 12 α-helices and 24 ß-sheets for basic 11S globulins. Molecular docking results indicate that both grape seed 11S globulins could establish different types of non-covalent interactions (π-π) with malvidin 3-O-glucoside (wine anthocyanin), which suggest a possible colour protection similar to that occurring in copigmentation phenomenon. These findings provide valuable information of globulin family proteins that could be relevant in food industry applications.

The grape pomace industry produces large quantities of protein-rich seeds, which can be a sustainable non-animal protein source; their techno-functional properties could be exploited to improve the colour stabilisation and modulating the astringency of red wines in warm climates. This study aims to optimise the methodology of obtaining protein hydrolysates from defatted grape seed meal residue. Five assays using different quantities of enzyme and raw materials were considered. Based on the protein purity, hydrolysates yield, colour and molecular weight distribution achieved, optimal conditions were the hydrolysis of the alkaline protein concentrate with the highest amount of enzyme. The products obtained showed the lowest colour parameters, with the lightness contributing the most to the colour differences, which were visually perceptible (ΔE*ab > 3). The hydrophobic amino acids remained within the peptide sequence, leaving polar and charged amino acids in terminal positions, which could affect the wine equilibrium related to colour stabilisation.

OBJECTIVES: The aim was to evaluate general changes and investigate the association between diet quality, physical activity (PA), and sedentary time (ST) during COVID-19 lockdown and the subsequent 7-month changes in health-related behaviours and lifestyles in older people. PARTICIPANTS: 1092 participants (67-97y) from two Spanish cohorts were included. DESIGN: Telephone-based questionaries were used to evaluate health-related behaviours and lifestyle. Multinomial logistic regression analyses with diet quality, PA, and ST during lockdown as predictors for health-related behaviours changes post-lockdown were applied. RESULTS: Diet quality, PA, and ST significantly improved post-lockdown, while physical component score of the SF-12 worsened. Participants with a low diet quality during lockdown had higher worsening of post-lockdown ST and anxiety; whereas those with high diet quality showed less likelihood of remaining abstainers, worsening weight, and improving PA. Lower ST was associated with a higher likelihood of remaining abstainers, and worsening weight and improving social contact; nevertheless, higher ST was linked to improvement in sleep quality. Lower PA was more likely to decrease alcohol consumption, while higher PA showed the opposite. However, PA was more likely to be associated to remain abstainers. CONCLUSIONS: Despite improvements in lifestyle after lockdown, it had health consequences for older people. Particularly, lower ST during lockdown seemed to provide the most medium-term remarkable lifestyle improvements.

BACKGROUND: Cladribine is a synthetic deoxyadenosine analogue in development as an oral multiple sclerosis (MS) therapy. OBJECTIVE: To report in detail the safety findings from the 96-week, phase III, double-blind CLARITY study, which evaluated treatment with cladribine tablets in relapsing-remitting MS. METHODS: A total of 1,326 patients were randomized 1:1:1 to two short-course regimens of cladribine tablets (3.5 or 5.25 mg/kg cumulative dose over 96 weeks) or placebo. Safety assessments included monitoring for adverse events (AEs), routine physical and neurologic examinations and frequent laboratory parameter assessments. RESULTS: Of the randomized patients, 88.6% completed treatment with cladribine tablets versus 86.3% with placebo. Lymphopenia was the most commonly reported AE in patients treated with cladribine tablets and was anticipated based on the mechanism of action. The incidence of infections was 48.3% with cladribine tablets and 42.5% with placebo, with 99.1% and 99.0% rated mild-to-moderate by investigators. Herpes zoster infections developed in 20 (2.3%) cladribine-treated patients; all cases were dermatomal. There were no herpes zoster infections in the placebo group. Nine (1.0%) patients experienced events related to uterine leiomyomas in the cladribine tablets groups versus one (0.2%) with placebo. Three isolated cases of malignancy were reported in cladribine-treated patients during the study; a fourth was reported during post-study surveillance. A pre-malignant cervical carcinoma in situ was also reported. The incidence of malignancies during the study did not exceed the expected rate in a population standardized for country, gender and age. CONCLUSION: The safety and tolerability profile observed in the CLARITY study together with the reported efficacy support the potential for cladribine tablets as an MS therapy.

We have devised a more sensible approach to estimate the carotenoid content of orange juices, which can be regarded as a model system of food with intricate carotenoid pattern. For this purpose spectroscopic information at several wavelengths and spectra of the juices and not from their carotenoid extracts were considered, such that more accurate and rapid quantitative assessments can be achieved. The wavelengths proposed on the basis of the characteristic vector method were 420, 455, 515, 545 and 610nm or 420, 445, 510, 545 and 605nm, depending on the measurement conditions. The correlations between the carotenoid content and the reflectances at these wavelengths were very good (R=0.94 and 0.90, respectively). Additionally, it was demonstrated that the colour of the juices could be assessed with very good accuracy considering them. Due to its simplicity and rapidity, this method is intended to facilitate the quality control of the carotenoid content of foodstuffs in the industry and/or in the field.

AIMS: To assess whether there is a change in the prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation after the strict lockdown measures due to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain; and to assess which are the factors associated with the incidence of a depressive episode or suicidal ideation during the lockdown. METHODS: Data from a longitudinal adult population-based cohort from the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona were analysed (n = 1103). Structured face-to-face home-based interviews (pre-pandemic) and telephone interviews were performed. Both depression and suicidal ideation were assessed through an adaptation of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 3.0). A variety of validated instruments and sociodemographic variables including age, sex, educational level, occupational status, home quietness, screen time, resilience, loneliness, social support, physical activity, disability, economic situation and COVID-19-related information were also considered. Population prevalence estimates and multivariable logistic regressions were computed. RESULTS: Overall, prevalence rates of depression and suicidal ideation did not change significantly from before to after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the rates of depression among individuals aged 50+ years showed a significant decrease compared to before the pandemic (from 8.48 to 6.41%; p = 0.01). Younger individuals (odds ratio (OR) = 0.97 per year older; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.95-0.99) and those feeling loneliness (OR = 1.96; 95% CI = 1.42-2.70) during the lockdown were at an increased risk of developing depression during the confinement. Resilience showed a protective effect against the risk of depression (OR = 0.46; 95% CI = 0.32-0.66) and suicidal ideation (OR = 0.33; 95% CI = 0.16-0.68), whereas individuals perceiving social support were at a lower risk of developing suicidal thoughts (OR = 0.35; 95% CI = 0.18-0.69). CONCLUSIONS: Continuous reinforcement of mental health preventive and intervening measures during and in the aftermath of the crisis is of global importance, particularly among vulnerable groups who are experiencing the most distress. Future research should strive to evaluate the long-term effects of the COVID-19 crisis on mental health.

AIM: Cross-culturally adapt the PDMS-2 scale from Spanish-Mexican to Spanish-Spanish and evaluate its validity. To determine the efficacy of physiotherapy treatment (number of physiotherapy sessions and activities proposed by the physiotherapist and performed by the parents) in children with neurodevelopmental disorders between the ages of 0 and 3 years. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A first prospective descriptive study of validation of the PDMS-2 scale including 74 subjects with neurodevelopmental disorder with aged from 0 and 3 years old. A second randomized clinical trial to evaluate the physiotherapy (Bobath concept) intervention in the experimental group (EG) (n = 37) who received unique 30-minute weekly sessions for 8 weeks against the control group (CG) (n = 37) that did not receive physiotherapy using the PDMS-2 scale for evaluation. RESULTS: An adequate inter-rater reliablity was found (ICC = 0.76). The scale showed also a very good internal consistency (alpha = 0,99). Significant differences between both groups at 8 weeks. EG obtained better scores in the postest after administrating the physiotherapy treatment (p < 0.001) Moderate and significant correlation coefficients were found between the number of physiotherapy sessions and Total Motor Quotient (TMQ) (r = 0.38; p < 0.05) and the home actitvities with TMQ (r = 0.46; p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The Peabody PDMS-2 scale is a valid and reliable instrument to measure gross and fine motor development in children with neurodevelopmental disorder aged from 0 and 3 years old. Physiotherapy is useful for helping children with delayed neurodevelopment improve. The number of physiotherapy sessions and the activities proposed by the physiotherapist and performed at home by the parents show a direct and positive relationship with the results obtained in motor development.


TITLE: Validación de la PDMS-2 en población española. Evaluación de la intervención de fisioterapia y la participación de los padres en el tratamiento de niños con trastornos del neurodesarrollo.Objetivo. Adaptar transculturalmente la escala del desarrollo motor de Peabody, segunda edición (PDMS-2), del español mexicano al español de España y evaluar su validez. Determinar la eficacia del tratamiento fisioterápico (número de sesiones de fisioterapia y actividades propuestas por el fisioterapeuta y realizadas por los padres) en niños con trastornos del neurodesarrollo de 0 a 3 años. Sujetos y métodos. Un primer estudio descriptivo prospectivo de validación de la PDMS-2, que incluyó a 74 sujetos con trastorno del neurodesarrollo con edades comprendidas entre 0 y 3 años. Un segundo ensayo clínico aleatorio para evaluar la intervención de fisioterapia (concepto Bobath) en el grupo experimental (n = 37), que recibió sesiones únicas de 30 minutos semanales durante ocho semanas frente al grupo de control (n = 37), que no recibió fisioterapia y utilizó la PDMS-2 para su evaluación. Resultados. Se encontró una adecuada confiabilidad interagente (coeficiente de correlación intraclase = 0,76). La escala mostró también una muy buena consistencia interna (alfa = 0,99). Hubo diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos a las ocho semanas. El grupo experimental obtuvo mejores puntuaciones en el postest después de administrar el tratamiento de fisioterapia (p menor de 0,001). Se encontraron coeficientes de correlación moderados y significativos entre el número de sesiones de fisioterapia y el cociente motor total (r = 0,38; p menor de 0,05) y las actividades realizadas en casa con el cociente motor total (r = 0,46; p = 0,005). Conclusiones. La PDMS-2 es un instrumento válido y fiable para medir el desarrollo motor grueso y fino en niños con trastorno del neurodesarrollo de 0 a 3 años. La fisioterapia es útil en la mejoría en niños con retraso del neurodesarrollo. El número de sesiones de fisioterapia y las actividades propuestas por el fisioterapeuta y realizadas en casa por los padres muestran una relación directa y positiva con los resultados obtenidos en el desarrollo motor.

The usefulness of digital image analysis in estimating sensory attributes of grape seeds in relation to maturation level was evaluated for the first time. Seeds from Syrah grapes harvested throughout the ripening period were grouped according to maturity using the DigiEye® system. The discriminant ability, homogeneity, repeatability, and uniformity of a sensory panel were assessed after training on grape seeds. The aim was to evaluate the use of digital image techniques in order to accurately establish the maturity level of grape seeds, based on sensory and textural features. All sensory attributes (color, hardness, cracking, vegetal, bitterness and astringency) showed significant (p < 0.05) correlations with the chemical maturity stage. Color and vegetal (sensory attributes), together with deformation energy (instrumental texture parameter) (De), allowed for the classification of the seeds into four real maturity stages, hence their usefulness as grape seed ripening indicators. Significant (p < 0.05) and high-correlation factors were also found between instrumental and sensory attributes. Therefore, digital analysis can be a useful tool to better define the maturity stage in the vineyard, and to dispose of grape seeds with well-defined sensory profiles for specific oenological applications. This could help to determine the optimal harvest date to manage winemaking, in order to produce high quality wines in warm climates.

Currently, the wine industry has an increasing interest in developing alternative solutions to traditional animal proteins fining agents. In this study, the impact of different protein fining agents on the turbidity, phenolic composition and color of 2-month and 12-month Syrah red wines was assessed. Wines fined with egg albumin and plant-based proteins from potato, pea, and grape seed as recent alternative, were compared to unfined control wines. Changes on turbidity, phenolic composition and color (by Differential Colorimetry) showed that animal and plant proteins differed in their clarifying efficiency and ability to interact with colorless phenolics and anthocyanins, depending on the age of wine, with important consequences on color quality and stability. Plant proteins showed lower effectiveness to reduce wine turbidity than egg albumin but modified in different way the phenolic composition, inducing lower color differences with respect to control wine and similar stability, especially potato and grape seed proteins.

The post-fermentative double addition of Pedro Ximénez cv seeds obtained from natural matured grapes (ripe seeds, RS) and postharvest sun-dried grapes (overripe seeds, OS) were studied as sustainable enological alternatives to conventional vinification (CW) to improve the stability of Syrah wines produced in a warm climate. The phenolic composition was assessed by rapid resolution liquid chromatography, copigmentation/polymerization processes by spectrophotometry, and color quality and stability by Differential Colorimetry. OSW and RSW wines enriched their total phenolic content, being the effect more pronounced with overripe seeds (by 23% versus 10%). OSW differences were found for gallic acid, monomeric flavan-3-ols, and procyanidins compared to CW, and for (+)-catechin, procyanidin B2-3-O-gallate and the tetramer to RSW. Phenolic changes were related to higher color intensity in seed-added wines. OSW having higher percentage of polymeric pigments maintained for longer time the chromatic improvement, being visually darker and more intense than final CW and RSW.

Overripe seeds from sun-dried grapes submitted to postharvest dehydration constitute a scarcely investigated class of vinification byproduct with limited reports on their phenolic composition and industrial applications. In this study, Raman spectroscopy was applied to characterize a selection of overripe seed byproducts from different white grapes (cv. Moscatel, cv. Pedro Ximénez and cv. Zalema) submitted to postharvest sun drying. The Raman measurements were taken using a 1064 nm excitation laser in order to mitigate the fluorescent effect and the dispersive detection scheme allowed a compactness of the optical system. Spectroscopic data were processed by a principal component analysis to reduce the dimensionality and partner recognition. The evolution of the Raman spectrum during the overripening process was compared with the phenolic composition of grape seeds, which was determined by rapid resolution liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (RRLC/MS). A multivariate processing of the spectroscopic data allowed the classification of overripe seeds according to the grape variety and the monitoring of stages of the postharvest sun drying process.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation may increase the risk for cardiovascular diseases in patients with psoriasis, but data on this risk in patients with early psoriasis are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the risk of developing incident myocardial infarction (MI), stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) between an inception cohort of patients with psoriasis and a psoriasis-free population. METHODS: We conducted an inception cohort study with a nested case-control analysis within the U.K.-based General Practice Research Database. The study population encompassed 36,702 patients with a first-time recorded diagnosis of psoriasis 1994-2005, matched 1 : 1 to psoriasis-free patients. We assessed crude incidence rates (IRs) and applied conditional logistic regression to obtain odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Overall, the IRs of MI (n = 449), stroke (n = 535) and TIA (n = 402) were similar among patients with or without psoriasis. However, the adjusted OR of developing MI for patients with psoriasis aged < 60 years was 1.66 (95% CI 1.03-2.66) compared with patients without psoriasis, while the OR for patients aged >or= 60 years was 0.99 (95% CI 0.77-1.26). The adjusted ORs of developing MI for patients of all ages with 2 prescriptions/year for oral psoriasis treatment were 2.48 (95% CI 0.69-8.91) and 1.39 (95% CI 0.43-4.53), with a similar finding for stroke and TIA. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of developing a cardiovascular outcome was not materially elevated for patients with early psoriasis overall. In subanalyses, however, there was a suggestion of an increased (but low absolute) MI risk for patients with psoriasis aged < 60 years, mainly with severe disease.
