RESUMEN
Pig oocytes and embryos are highly sensitive to cryopreservation; however, tolerance to cryopreservation increases in embryos at the expanded blastocyst stage. This increased tolerance may be attributed to a decrease in cytoplasmic lipid droplets at this stage. We previously showed that an increase in the permeability of the plasma membrane in mouse oocytes to water and cryoprotectants, caused by the artificial expression of aquaporin 3, an aquaglyceroporin, enhanced tolerance to cryopreservation. In the present study, we investigated whether membrane permeability was also involved in the tolerance of pig embryos to cryopreservation. The permeability of oocytes and morulae to water and glycerol was low, whereas that of expanded blastocysts was high. Activation energy for permeability to water, glycerol, ethylene glycol, and dimethyl sulfoxide was markedly lower for expanded blastocysts than for oocytes. This suggests that water and these cryoprotectants move through expanded blastocysts predominantly by facilitated diffusion and through oocytes predominantly by simple diffusion. Aquaporin 3 mRNA was expressed in expanded blastocysts abundantly, but less so in oocytes. On the other hand, the permeability of expanded blastocysts to propylene glycol was as low as that of oocytes, and activation energy for its permeability was similar to that of oocytes, which suggests that propylene glycol moves through oocytes and embryos predominantly by simple diffusion. These results suggest that the higher tolerance of pig expanded blastocysts to cryopreservation is also related to high membrane permeability due to the expression of water/cryoprotectant channels, in addition to the decrease in cytoplasmic lipid droplets.

INTRODUCTION: The plate fixation for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has become increasingly widespread for facilitating early mobilization and improving fusion rate. However, apart from multilevel operations, there is still some controversy over its use for single-level ACDF. This retrospective study has compared the reoperation rates after single-level ACDFs performed at our institution between the procedures with and without plate fixation. METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 131 patients with???1-year of follow-up after a single-level ACDF, consisting of 100 patients without plating (conventional ACDF) and 31 patients with plate fixation (plated ACDF). RESULTS: Eleven patients (8.4% of all patients):four conventional ACDFs (4% of the conventional ACDFs) and seven plated ACDFs (22.6% of the plated ACDFs), had reoperation surgeries. The incidence of reoperation was significantly higher in the plated ACDFs than in the conventional ACDFs (P=0.0037). The log-rank test revealed a significant difference (P=0.00003) in 5-year reoperation-free survival rates between the conventional (96.9%) and the plated groups (68.3%). CONCLUSION: Anterior cervical plating may have a negative impact on the adjacent segment integrity, resulting in an increased reoperation rate after a single-level ACDF at relatively shorter postoperative time points. This study aimed at presenting a rare nontraumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis and considering its possible cause. Traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis, called hangman's fracture, frequently occurs as a high-energy trauma. However, nontraumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis is quite rare, and relevant literature on this condition is scarce. We reported a case of a 49-year-old man who had spondylolisthesis of the axis without experiencing a traumatic episode. Plain radiograph and CT image showed 7.0 mm anterolisthesis of the axis. Both C2 and C3 facet joints positioned asymmetrically, and the unilateral side oriented coronally, which was less resistant to rotational motion. These facet joint abnormalities could cause segmental instability and spondylolisthesis of the axis. Due to the resultant myelopathy, the slip with cord compression was surgically corrected by posterior decompression with instrumented fusion.
