Endophytes play an important role in plant development, survival, and establishment, but their temporal dynamics in young conifer plants are still largely unknown. In this study, the bacterial community was determined by metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA gene in the rhizoplane, roots, and aerial parts of 1- and 5-month-old seedlings of natural populations of Abies religiosa (Kunth) Schltdl. & Cham. In 1-month-old seedlings, Pseudomonas dominated aerial parts (relative abundance 71.6%) and roots (37.9%). However, the roots exhibited significantly higher bacterial species richness than the aerial parts, with the dissimilarity between these plant sections mostly explained by the loss of bacterial amplification sequence variants. After 5 months, Mucilaginibacter dominated in the rhizoplane (9.0%), Streptomyces in the roots (12.2%), and Pseudomonas in the aerial parts (18.1%). The bacterial richness and community structure differed significantly between the plant sections, and these variations were explained mostly by 1-for-1 substitution. The relative abundance of putative metabolic pathways significantly differed between the plant sections at both 1 and 5 months. All the dominant bacterial genera (e.g., Pseudomonas and Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia) have been reported to have plant growth-promoting capacities and/or antagonism against pathogens, but what defines their role for plant development has still to be determined. This investigation improves our understanding of the early plant-bacteria interactions essential for natural regeneration of A. religiosa forest.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed the long-term influence of fixation systems on proximal aortic neck (PAN) evolution by comparing 2 late-generation endoprostheses, Endurant (Medtronic Vascular, Minneapolis, Minn) with suprarenal fixation (SRF) and Excluder (W.L Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, Ariz) with infrarenal fixation (IRF). METHODS: Our retrospective observational study included consecutive patients undergoing endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for aorto-iliac aneurysms (2011-2020). Primary end points: neck enlargement and freedom from significative PAN enlargement (5 mm). Secondary end points: neck-related reintervention, endoleaks and graft migration. Results were reported following the Society of Vascular Surgery reporting standards. RESULTS: 139 patients were included (97 in SRF group and 42 in IRF group). A difference in growth at 10 mm caudal to lowest renal artery at 2 years follow-up was found (mean growth of 1.92 ± 3.38 mm in SRF and 0.16 ± 6.86 mm in IRF; P < 0.001). A tendency to a major growth in SRF at 4 years follow-up at the lowest renal artery (1.27 ± 3.36 mm vs. 0.63 ± 2.2 mm; P = 0.06), 5 mm distal to lowest renal artery (2.17 ± 3.52 mm vs. 0.94 ± 2.76 mm; P = 0.001) and 10 mm distal to lowest renal artery (2.65 ± 3.86 mm vs. 1.12 ± 1.5 mm; P < 0.001) was shown. Freedom from PAN enlargement was 96.65% and 88.20% in SRF and 100% and 94.4% in IRF at 2 and 4 years follow-up respectively (log rank 0.041). A greater incidence of type II endoleaks in IRF was observed (40.48% vs. 15.46%; P = 0.001). Oversizing >15% showed to be a risk factor of PAN enlargement (odds ratio 6.85; 95% confident interval: 1.67-28.4; P = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: A small but significative percentage of patients after EVAR show a progressive PAN enlargement, being significatively greater in SRF, without increasing neck-related complications 4 years after graft deployment.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of the characteristics of first-ever cardiovascular events in type 1 diabetes may impact primary prevention strategies. This study describes the first-ever manifestation of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in Catalonia (Spain) and evaluates differences according to age and sex. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of patients with T1D > 30 years without CVD before 2010 registered in the SIDIAP database. The occurrence of a first cardiovascular event up to the end of 2016, the type of CV event and associations with baseline characteristics were analysed. RESULTS: Of 8412 patients, 884 suffered a first CV event (incidence rate 1.62 per 100 persons-years). Overall, peripheral vascular disease (39.5%) was the most frequent event. We observed a higher proportion of heart failure in women (21.7%) than in men (10.1%). In women, heart failure was the most frequent event in those > 65 years (40.5%). Decreased glomerular filtration rate (hazard ratio [HR] 5.42 [95% CI 4.32;6.80]), elevated albumin/creatinine ratio (HR 3.39 [95% CI [2.47;4.66], microvascular complications (HR 3.27 [95% CI 2.85;3.75]), and hypertension (HR 3.21 [95% CI [2.80;3.67]) were most strongly associated with a first CV event. HbA1c > 7.0% was associated with incident CVD only in patients aged < 55/60 years. CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral artery disease in the whole cohort, and heart failure in elder subjects are the most frequent first-ever CVD events in T1D in our region. These findings deserve to be taken into account when considering primary prevention measures and when estimating CV risk in people with T1D.

Apiculate yeasts belonging to the genus Hanseniaspora are predominant on grapes and other fruits. While some species, such as Hanseniaspora uvarum, are well known for their abundant presence in fruits, they are generally characterized by their detrimental effect on fermentation quality because the excessive production of acetic acid. However, the species Hanseniaspora vineae is adapted to fermentation and currently is considered as an enhancer of positive flavour and sensory complexity in foods. Since 2002, we have been isolating strains from this species and conducting winemaking processes with them. In parallel, we also characterized this species from genes to metabolites. In 2013, we sequenced the genomes of two H. vineae strains, being these the first apiculate yeast genomes determined. In the last 10 years, it has become possible to understand its biology, discovering very peculiar features compared to the conventional Saccharomyces yeasts, such as a natural and unique G2 cell cycle arrest or the elucidation of the mandelate pathway for benzenoids synthesis. All these characteristics contribute to phenotypes with proved interest from the biotechnological point of view for winemaking and the production of other foods.

BACKGROUND: People with diabetes mellitus are at increased risk of postoperative complications. Data from randomised clinical trials and meta-analyses point to a potential benefit of intensive glycaemic control, targeting near-normal blood glucose, in people with hyperglycaemia (with and without diabetes mellitus) being submitted for surgical procedures. However, there is limited evidence concerning this question in people with diabetes mellitus undergoing surgery. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of perioperative glycaemic control for people with diabetes undergoing surgery. SEARCH METHODS: For this update, we searched the databases CENTRAL, MEDLINE, LILACS, WHO ICTRP and ClinicalTrials.gov. The date of last search for all databases was 25 July 2022. We applied no language restrictions. SELECTION CRITERIA: We included randomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs) that prespecified different targets of perioperative glycaemic control for participants with diabetes (intensive versus conventional or standard care). DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: Two authors independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias. Our primary outcomes were all-cause mortality, hypoglycaemic events and infectious complications. Secondary outcomes were cardiovascular events, renal failure, length of hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) stay, health-related quality of life, socioeconomic effects, weight gain and mean blood glucose during the intervention. We summarised studies using meta-analysis with a random-effects model and calculated the risk ratio (RR) for dichotomous outcomes and the mean difference (MD) for continuous outcomes, using a 95% confidence interval (CI), or summarised outcomes with descriptive methods. We used the GRADE approach to evaluate the certainty of the evidence (CoE). MAIN RESULTS: A total of eight additional studies were added to the 12 included studies in the previous review leading to 20 RCTs included in this update. A total of 2670 participants were randomised, of which 1320 were allocated to the intensive treatment group and 1350 to the comparison group. The duration of the intervention varied from during surgery to five days postoperative. No included trial had an overall low risk of bias. Intensive glycaemic control resulted in little or no difference in all-cause mortality compared to conventional glycaemic control (130/1263 (10.3%) and 117/1288 (9.1%) events, RR 1.08, 95% CI 0.88 to 1.33; I2 = 0%; 2551 participants, 18 studies; high CoE). Hypoglycaemic events, both severe and non-severe, were mainly experienced in the intensive glycaemic control group. Intensive glycaemic control may slightly increase hypoglycaemic events compared to conventional glycaemic control (141/1184 (11.9%) and 41/1226 (3.3%) events, RR 3.36, 95% CI 1.69 to 6.67; I2 = 64%; 2410 participants, 17 studies; low CoE), as well as those considered severe events (37/927 (4.0%) and 6/969 (0.6%), RR 4.73, 95% CI 2.12 to 10.55; I2 = 0%; 1896 participants, 11 studies; low CoE). Intensive glycaemic control, compared to conventional glycaemic control, may result in little to no difference in the rate of infectious complications (160/1228 (13.0%) versus 224/1225 (18.2%) events, RR 0.75, 95% CI 0.55 to 1.04; P = 0.09; I2 = 55%; 2453 participants, 18 studies; low CoE). Analysis of the predefined secondary outcomes revealed that intensive glycaemic control may result in a decrease in cardiovascular events compared to conventional glycaemic control (107/955 (11.2%) versus 125/978 (12.7%) events, RR 0.73, 95% CI 0.55 to 0.97; P = 0.03; I2 = 44%; 1454 participants, 12 studies; low CoE). Further, intensive glycaemic control resulted in little or no difference in renal failure events compared to conventional glycaemic control (137/1029 (13.3%) and 158/1057 (14.9%), RR 0.92, 95% CI 0.69 to 1.22; P = 0.56; I2 = 38%; 2086 participants, 14 studies; low CoE). We found little to no difference between intensive glycaemic control and conventional glycaemic control in length of ICU stay (MD -0.10 days, 95% CI -0.57 to 0.38; P = 0.69; I2 = 69%; 1687 participants, 11 studies; low CoE), and length of hospital stay (MD -0.79 days, 95% CI -1.79 to 0.21; P = 0.12; I2 = 77%; 1520 participants, 12 studies; very low CoE). Due to the differences within included studies, we did not pool data for the reduction of mean blood glucose. Intensive glycaemic control resulted in a mean lowering of blood glucose, ranging from 13.42 mg/dL to 91.30 mg/dL. One trial assessed health-related quality of life in 12/37 participants in the intensive glycaemic control group, and 13/44 participants in the conventional glycaemic control group; no important difference was shown in the measured physical health composite score of the short-form 12-item health survey (SF-12). One substudy reported a cost analysis of the population of an included study showing a higher total hospital cost in the conventional glycaemic control group, USD 42,052 (32,858 to 56,421) compared to the intensive glycaemic control group, USD 40,884 (31.216 to 49,992). It is important to point out that there is relevant heterogeneity between studies for several outcomes. We identified two ongoing trials. The results of these studies could add new information in future updates on this topic. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS: High-certainty evidence indicates that perioperative intensive glycaemic control in people with diabetes undergoing surgery does not reduce all-cause mortality compared to conventional glycaemic control. There is low-certainty evidence that intensive glycaemic control may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, but cause little to no difference to the risk of infectious complications after the intervention, while it may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia. There are no clear differences between the groups for the other outcomes. There are uncertainties among the intensive and conventional groups regarding the optimal glycaemic algorithm and target blood glucose concentrations. In addition, we found poor data on health-related quality of life, socio-economic effects and weight gain. It is also relevant to underline the heterogeneity among studies regarding clinical outcomes and methodological approaches. More studies are needed that consider these factors and provide a higher quality of evidence, especially for outcomes such as hypoglycaemia and infectious complications.

In recent years, cybersecurity has been strengthened through the adoption of processes, mechanisms and rapid sources of indicators of compromise in critical areas. Among the most latent challenges are the detection, classification and eradication of malware and Denial of Service Cyber-Attacks (DoS). The literature has presented different ways to obtain and evaluate malware- and DoS-cyber-attack-related instances, either from a technical point of view or by offering ready-to-use datasets. However, acquiring fresh, up-to-date samples requires an arduous process of exploration, sandbox configuration and mass storage, which may ultimately result in an unbalanced or under-represented set. Synthetic sample generation has shown that the cost associated with setting up controlled environments and time spent on sample evaluation can be reduced. Nevertheless, the process is performed when the observations already belong to a characterized set, totally detached from a real environment. In order to solve the aforementioned, this work proposes a methodology for the generation of synthetic samples of malicious Portable Executable binaries and DoS cyber-attacks. The task is performed via a Reinforcement Learning engine, which learns from a baseline of different malware families and DoS cyber-attack network properties, resulting in new, mutated and highly functional samples. Experimental results demonstrate the high adaptability of the outputs as new input datasets for different Machine Learning algorithms.

Anxiety is a mental disorder with a growing worldwide incidence due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic. Pharmacological therapy includes drugs such as benzodiazepines (BDZs) or azapirones like buspirone (BUSP) or analogs, which unfortunately produce severe adverse effects or no immediate response, respectively. Medicinal plants or their bioactive metabolites are a shared global alternative to treat anxiety. Palmitone is one active compound isolated from Annona species due to its tranquilizing activity. However, its influence on neural activity and possible mechanism of action are unknown. In this study, an electroencephalographic (EEG) spectral power analysis was used to corroborate its depressant activity in comparison with the anxiolytic-like effects of reference drugs such as diazepam (DZP, 1 mg/kg) and BUSP (4 mg/kg) or 8-OH-DPAT (1 mg/kg), alone or in the presence of the GABAA (picrotoxin, PTX, 1 mg/kg) or serotonin 5-HT1A receptor antagonists (WAY100634, WAY, 1 mg/kg). The anxiolytic-like activity was assayed using the behavioral response of mice employing open-field, hole-board, and plus-maze tests. EEG activity was registered in both the frontal and parietal cortex, performing a 10 min baseline and 30 min recording after the treatments. As a result, anxiety-like behavior was significantly decreased in mice administered with palmitone, DZP, BUSP, or 8-OH-DPAT. The effect of palmitone was equivalent to that produced by 5-HT1A receptor agonists but 50% less effective than DZP. The presence of PTX and WAY prevented the anxiolytic-like response of DZP and 8-OH-DPAT, respectively. Whereas only the antagonist of the 5-HT1A receptor (WAY) inhibited the palmitone effects. Palmitone and BUSP exhibited similar changes in the relative power bands after the spectral power analysis. This response was different to the changes induced by DZP. In conclusion, brain electrical activity was associated with the anxiolytic-like effects of palmitone implying a serotoninergic rather than a GABAergic mechanism of action.

Natural products are recognized as potential analgesics since many of them are part of modern medicine to relieve pain without serious adverse effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of an aqueous extract of Brassica oleracea var. italica sprouts (AEBS) and one of its main reported bioactive metabolites sulforaphane (SFN). Antinociceptive activity of the AEBS (30, 100, and 300 mg/kg, i.p. or 1000 and 2000 mg/kg, p.o.) and SFN (0.1 mg/kg, i.p.) was evaluated in the plantar test in rats to reinforce its analgesic-like activity at central level using the reference drug tramadol (TR, 50 mg/kg, i.p.). The anti-inflammatory-like response was determined in the carrageenan-induced oedema at the same dosages for comparison with ketorolac (KET, 20 mg/kg, i.p.) or indomethacin (INDO, 20 mg/kg, p.o.). A histological analysis of the swollen paw was included to complement the anti-inflammatory response. Additionally, acute toxicity observed in clinical analgesics as the most common adverse effects, such as sedation and/or gastric damage, was also explored. As a result, central and peripheral action of the AEBS was confirmed using enteral and parenteral administration, in which significant reduction of the nociceptive and inflammatory responses resembled the effects of TR, KET, or INDO, respectively, involving the presence of SFN. No adverse or toxic effects were observed in the presence of the AEBS or SFN. In conclusion, this study supports that Brassica oleracea var. italica sprouts are a potential source of antinociceptive natural products such as SFN for therapy of pain alone and associated to an inflammation condition.

Freshwater salinity is rising across many regions of the United States as well as globally, a phenomenon called the freshwater salinization syndrome (FSS). The FSS mobilizes organic carbon, nutrients, heavy metals, and other contaminants sequestered in soils and freshwater sediments, alters the structures and functions of soils, streams, and riparian ecosystems, threatens drinking water supplies, and undermines progress toward many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. There is an urgent need to leverage the current understanding of salinization's causes and consequencesâin partnership with engineers, social scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholdersâinto locally tailored approaches for balancing our nation's salt budget. In this feature, we propose that the FSS can be understood as a common pool resource problem and explore Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom's social-ecological systems framework as an approach for identifying the conditions under which local actors may work collectively to manage the FSS in the absence of top-down regulatory controls. We adopt as a case study rising sodium concentrations in the Occoquan Reservoir, a critical water supply for up to one million residents in Northern Virginia (USA), to illustrate emerging impacts, underlying causes, possible solutions, and critical research needs.

Infantile myofibromatosis (IM) is the most common benign fibrous tumor of infancy, characterized by the development of single or multiple nodules in the skin, soft tissues, bone, and/or viscera. Multicentric forms are less frequent and can affect different tissues simultaneously and their prognosis depends on their extension and visceral involvement. Rarely, these forms are limited to the skeleton, in which case the absence of extraosseous lesions makes it difficult to suspect this entity. We present the case of an infant with multiple radiolucent lesions involving the skull, ribs, spine, and long bones, discovered in a radiological study performed after a minor trauma. A broad differential diagnosis was considered based on the osteolytic and polyostotic nature of the lesions on imaging studies. This report details and illustrates the typical radiological findings in bony involvement of IM, which suggest this disorder over other diagnostic options.

Most of the methods for real-time semantic segmentation do not take into account temporal information when working with video sequences. This is counter-intuitive in real-world scenarios where the main application of such methods is, precisely, being able to process frame sequences as quickly and accurately as possible. In this paper, we address this problem by exploiting the temporal information provided by previous frames of the video stream. Our method leverages a previous input frame as well as the previous output of the network to enhance the prediction accuracy of the current input frame. We develop a module that obtains feature maps rich in change information. Additionally, we incorporate the previous output of the network into all the decoder stages as a way of increasing the attention given to relevant features. Finally, to properly train and evaluate our methods, we introduce CityscapesVid, a dataset specifically designed to benchmark semantic video segmentation networks. Our proposed network, entitled FASSVid improves the mIoU accuracy performance over a standard non-sequential baseline model. Moreover, FASSVid obtains state-of-the-art inference speed and competitive mIoU results compared to other state-of-the-art lightweight networks, with significantly lower number of computations. Specifically, we obtain 71% of mIoU in our CityscapesVid dataset, running at 114.9 FPS on a single NVIDIA GTX 1080Ti and 31 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson Nano embedded board with images of size 1024×2048 and 512×1024, respectively.

The danger of Sclerotium cepivorum lies in the strength of its survival structure: sclerotia. Sclerotia comprising hardened mycelium contains food reserves that allow it to remain dormant for long period, which makes the sclerotia-infested soil useless to grow any crop of the Allium species, including onion and garlic. This paper would be the first report on the application of two-photon fluorescence microscopy to the analysis of the structure of sclerotia from S. cepivorum. For this study and, in order to test the method, two different types of sclerotia were used: (1) sclerotia isolated from naturally infested soil and (2) sclerotia produced in vitro (from 20-day-old cultures). Both types of sclerotia were processed by cryopreservation and eight µm histological cuts were used to obtain an autofluorescence image. For both sclerotia, the fluorescence spectrum has three peak signals at their wall. Sclerotia from infested soil presented fluorescence peaks at 400-436, 436-475, and 515-575 nm, while signals from sclerotia produced in vitro presented fluorescence peaks at 400-442, 500-600, and 655-700 nm. Peaks at the violet electromagnetic region (400-436 and 400-442) are like that of the signals reported by the melanin. This study showed that two-photon microscopy is a novel and valuable tool for the study of sclerotia structure and their fluorescence signal, and the possibility of using it as a specific marker to direct detection in the field should be explored.

PURPOSE: It has been suggested, on a theoretical basis, that ultrasound screening of thyroid nodules in obese patients with additional risk factors (family history, chronic autoimmune thyroiditis or high thyrotropin) might be cost-effective for the early detection and treatment of thyroid cancer. The present study evaluates if this approach can be validated in a real clinical setting. METHODS: Patients with obesity who attended hospital-based clinics were evaluated for risk factors of thyroid cancer and ultrasound screened for thyroid nodularity. Detected nodules were evaluated according to current guidelines. RESULTS: A total of 429 patients were evaluated (70.2% women, mean age 49.1 ± 11.0, mean body mass index 42.6 ± 5.8 kg/m2 ). Risk factors were present in 129 (30.1%) patients. Thyroid nodules with indication for fine-needle aspiration biopsy were detected in 69 (16.1%). We did not find differences in the risk of harbouring thyroid nodules according to the presence of risk factors (no risk factors 16.6%, risk factors 14.1%, P = .64). No single risk factor conferred an increased risk for thyroid nodules During the screening procedure, four cases of thyroid cancer were detected, none of them with the evaluated risk factors. CONCLUSION: The presence of known risk factors for thyroid cancer does not improve the performance of a US screening strategy aimed at the detection of thyroid nodules in obese patients. According to current guidelines, screening for thyroid nodules in obese patients is not recommended regardless of the presence of thyroid cancer risk factors.

Hand gesture recognition (HGR) takes a central role in human-computer interaction, covering a wide range of applications in the automotive sector, consumer electronics, home automation, and others. In recent years, accurate and efficient deep learning models have been proposed for real-time applications. However, the most accurate approaches tend to employ multiple modalities derived from RGB input frames, such as optical flow. This practice limits real-time performance due to intense extra computational cost. In this paper, we avoid the optical flow computation by proposing a real-time hand gesture recognition method based on RGB frames combined with hand segmentation masks. We employ a light-weight semantic segmentation method (FASSD-Net) to boost the accuracy of two efficient HGR methods: Temporal Segment Networks (TSN) and Temporal Shift Modules (TSM). We demonstrate the efficiency of the proposal on our IPN Hand dataset, which includes thirteen different gestures focused on interaction with touchless screens. The experimental results show that our approach significantly overcomes the accuracy of the original TSN and TSM algorithms by keeping real-time performance.

At present, new data sharing technologies, such as those used in the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, are being extensively adopted. For this reason, intelligent security controls have become imperative. According to good practices and security information standards, particularly those regarding security in depth, several defensive layers are required to protect information assets. Within the context of IoT cyber-attacks, it is fundamental to continuously adapt new detection mechanisms for growing IoT threats, specifically for those becoming more sophisticated within mesh networks, such as identity theft and cloning. Therefore, current applications, such as Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), and Security Information and Event Management Systems (SIEM), are becoming inadequate for accurately handling novel security incidents, due to their signature-based detection procedures using the matching and flagging of anomalous patterns. This project focuses on a seldom-investigated identity attack-the Clone ID attack-directed at the Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL), the underlying technology for most IoT devices. Hence, a robust Artificial Intelligence-based protection framework is proposed, in order to tackle major identity impersonation attacks, which classical applications are prone to misidentifying. On this basis, unsupervised pre-training techniques are employed to select key characteristics from RPL network samples. Then, a Dense Neural Network (DNN) is trained to maximize deep feature engineering, with the aim of improving classification results to protect against malicious counterfeiting attempts.

The search for molecules that contribute to the relief of pain is a field of research in constant development. Lamiaceae is one of the most recognized families world-wide for its use in traditional medicine to treat diseases that include pain and inflammation. Mexico can be considered one of the most important centers of diversification, and due to the high endemism of this family, it is crucial for the in situ conservation of this family. Information about the most common genera and species found in this country and their uses in folk medicine are scarcely reported in the literature. After an extensive inspection in bibliographic databases, mainly Sciencedirect, Pubmed and Springer, almost 1200 articles describing aspects of Lamiaceae were found; however, 217 articles were selected because they recognize the Mexican genera and species with antinociceptive and/or anti-inflammatory potential to relieve pain, such as Salvia and Agastache. The bioactive constituents of these genera were mainly terpenes (volatile and non-volatile) and phenolic compounds such as flavonoids (glycosides and aglycone). The aim of this review is to analyze important aspects of Mexican genera of Lamiaceae, scarcely explored as a potential source of secondary metabolites responsible for the analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of these species. In addition, we point out the possible mechanisms of action involved and the modulatory pathways investigated in different experimental models. As a result of this review, it is important to mention that scarce information has been reported regarding species of this family from Mexican genera. In fact, despite Calosphace being one of the largest subgenera of Salvia in the world, found mainly in Mexico, it has been barely investigated regarding its potential biological activities and recognized bioactive constituents. The scientific evidence regarding the different bioactive constituents found in species of Lamiaceae demonstrates that several species require further investigation in preclinical studies, and of course also in controlled clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of these natural products to support their therapeutic potential in pain relief and/or inflammation, among other health conditions. Since Mexico is one of the most important centers of diversification, and due to the high endemism of species of this family, it is crucial their rescue, in situ conservation, and investigation of their health benefits.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to show the utility of the combination of thrombin and endograft to solve an urgent situation related to femoral infections. CASE: We present the case of a 91-year-old female patient who underwent a femoral endarterectomy and superficial femoral artery angioplasty and developed a surgical site infection. She was readmitted to the hospital because of bleeding and was operated to suture the femoral patch and to do a plasty of sartorius muscle. Six days after the last intervention a femoral pulsatile mass was noted, and the computed tomography showed a big femoral pseudoaneurysm. Taken again to the theater and via a contralateral puncture a viabahn covered endograft was deployed from the external iliac artery to the yet diseased but patent femoral superficial femoral artery and the pseudoaneurysm was punctured, emptied, and filled with thrombin. The patient was discharged 2 weeks after the last procedure and lived for 10 months (she died because of a nonvascular related cause) with a patent graft and with healed lesions. CONCLUSIONS: In this case the endovascular solution was a definitive solution in a very old patient with several comorbidities.

Mixed strain dynamics are still not well or easily monitored although recently molecular identification methods have improved our knowledge. This study used a chromogenic differential plating medium that allows the discrimination of four of the main selected biofuel strains that are currently under development for ethanol production from cellulosic hydrolysates. Complete fermentation of hexoses and xylose was obtained with a yeast consortium composed of Spathaspora passalidarum, Scheffersomyces stipitis, Candida akabanensis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results showed that C.akabanensis excessively dominated consortium balance. Reducing its inoculum from 33 to 4.8% improved population strain balance and fermentation efficiency. Comparison of the consortia with single strain fermentations showed that it optimize sugar consumption and ethanol yields. This simple and cheap method also has advantages compared with molecular methods, as the yeast strains do not need to be genetically marked and identified cell proportions are probably active in the fermentation system as compared to DNA determination methods.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the inter-device reliability of three VERT devices (Mayfonk Athletic, Florida, USA) when worn on the waist (W), left-hip (LH), and right-hip (RH) during single- and double-leg counter movement jumps (CMJ) in collegiate athletes. Thirty-two female and twenty-eight male NCAA Division II athletes (n = 60) participated in the present study. Jump height (JH) values for double-leg CMJs were analyzed by each device using a one-way repeated measures ANOVA whereas a 2 (jump leg) x 3 (wear location) repeated measures ANOVA was employed to evaluate single-leg CMJs. Reliability of the VERT devices were based upon intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Double-leg CMJs revealed an excellent ICC between all three VERT devices (ICC = 0.969). However, JH for RH and LH (45.69 ± 9.84 and 45.82 ± 10.45 cm, respectively) were on average lower than W (50.44 ± 12.37cm; both p < 0.001). The ICCs were excellent for right- and left-leg CMJs (ICC = 0.939 and 0.941, respectively). However, an interaction was observed (p < 0.001). No differences existed for left- or right-leg when VERT was worn on the waist. However, JH was higher when VERT devices were worn on the opposite hip of the jump leg (i.e., LH>RH for right-leg CMJs; RH>LH for leftleg CMJs; all p < 0.001). Results suggest that LH and RH are interchangeable for double-leg CMJs, but not with waist despite excellent reliability. In addition, all wear locations provided excellent ICCs for single-leg CMJs. However, waist provides more consistent JH values for right- and left-leg CMJs while RH and LH show more variability.

BACKGROUND: Our primary objective was to test if the Clavien-Dindo classification (C-D-C) is also applicable for the assessment of carotid surgery and how well it correlates with patient prognosis in the mid-term follow-up. METHODS: From January 2011 to March 2014, a total of 248 consecutive open surgical carotid revascularization procedures were performed at one academic institution. All patients, symptomatic and asymptomatic, had a high-grade (>70%) stenosis and were operated on under general anesthesia. Physicians graded all complications that were identified in the first 30 days after surgery according to C-D-C. Complications were considered "minor" if they were of C-D-C grades I or II. Complications were considered "major" if they were of C-D-C grades III (those requiring surgical, endoscopic, or radiological intervention) or IV (those that are life-threatening). RESULTS: In the analysis of the overall survival, we have found the following differences: (1) survival at 12 months (no complication [NC]: 96.3%, minor complications [Cmin]: 94.3%, major complications [Cmaj]: 85.7%), (2) at 24 months (NC: 93.1%, Cmin: 92.8%, Cmaj: 64.3%), and (3) at 36 months (NC: 87.7%, Cmin: 81.7%, Cmaj: 64.3%). These differences were significant (P = 0.014). When analyzing the stroke-free survival after surgery, the survival rates were as follows: (1) at 12 months (NC: 94.2%, Cmin: 91.3%, Cmaj: 84.6%), (2) at 24 months (NC: 87.7%, Cmin: 82.3%, Cmaj: 61.5%), and (3) at 36 months (NC: 81.13%, Cmin: 76.5%, Cmaj: 61.5%). The significance of the difference is P = 0.016. In the analysis of cardiovascular event-free survival, taking into account not only stroke and myocardial infarction but also major amputation, the survival analysis shows the following results: (1) at 12 months (NC: 90.3%, Cmin: 76.1%, Cmaj: 60%), (2) at 24 months (NC: 81.1%, Cmin: 61.1%, Cmaj: 50%), and (3) at 36 months (NC: 73%, Cmin: 56.8%, Cmaj: 0%). These data also show a difference between the groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSSIONS: The C-D-C is applicable for patients who underwent a carotid endarterectomy, and the classification seems to make a good correlation of the grade of the complication and the prognosis during follow-up. More studies are needed with larger numbers of patients and longer follow-up times to clarify the use of the C-D-C after vascular surgery and identify high-risk patients. It can also be helpful to homogenize reports and make them comparable.
