RESUMEN

Solar heterogeneous photocatalysis was used to remove trihalomethanes (THMs) from drinking water. THMs, mainly trichloromethane (TCM), tribromomethane (TBM), bromodichloromethane (BDCM) and dibromochloromethane (DBCM) are one of the main class of disinfection by-products (DBPs). THMs were determined by HSGC-MS with detection limits (LODs) ranging from 0.5 µg L-1 to 0.9 µg L-1 for TCM and BDCM, respectively. Results show that a great proportion of THMs present in water are finally transferred to air as a result of their high volatility in the order TCM > BDCM > DBCM > TBM. The use of band-gap semiconductor materials (TiO2 and mainly ZnO) used as photocatalysts in combination with Na2S2O8 as electron acceptor and sulfate radical anion (SO4•-) generator enhanced the photooxidation of all THMs as compared to photolytic test. The time required for 50% of THMs to disappear (DT50) from water calculated for the most effective treatment (ZnO/Na2S2O8) were 12, 42, 57 and 61 min for TCM, TBM, BDCM, and DBCM, respectively. Therefore, solar heterogeneous photocatalysis can be considered as an interesting strategy for THMs removal, especially in sunny areas like Mediterranean basin.

RESUMEN

Oropouche fever is a zoonotic dengue-like syndrome caused by Oropouche virus. In August-September 2020, dengue-like syndrome developed in 41 patients in a remote rainforest village in French Guiana. By PCR or microneutralization, 23 (82.1%) of 28 tested patients were positive for Oropouche virus, documenting its emergence in French Guiana.

This work focuses on the effect of dissolved substances on the photocatalytic degradation of four herbicides, metribuzin and terbuthylazine (triazine) and chlorotoluron and isoproturon (phenylurea) in three different water matrix (deionized, mineral and leaching water). To study the effect of heterogeneous photocatalysis on their degradation, TiO2 and ZnO were used as photocatalysts in tandem with an oxidant (Na2S2O8). Results show that the addition of both semiconductor materials significantly enhances degradation of the herbicides although in different proportions. Similar effectivity of both photocatalyst, assessed as a function of the mean half-lives calculated, was observed (85 and 87 min for TiO2 and Zn, respectively), while the mean half-life in the photolytic experiment was markedly higher (265 min). The degradation rate was in the order: metribuzin > chlorotoluron ≈ isoproturon > terbuthylazine. A faster degradation was observed in all cases in deionized water as compared to mineral and leaching water indicating that the presence of dissolved salts and organic matter considerably slows down the effectiveness of the treatment. Although after 180 min of treatment, total mineralization was not achieved in mineral and leaching water, this technology considerably reduces the pollutant load in complex water matrices. Therefore, solar heterogeneous photocatalytic processes, especially those involving ZnO and TiO2 as photocatalysts, offers a valuable tool for surface and groundwater remediation, especially in those areas receiving a large number of hours of sunshine per year.

RESUMEN

The emergency of SARS-CoV-2 in China started a novel challenge to the scientific community. As the virus turns pandemic, scientists try to map the cellular mechanisms and pathways of SARS-CoV-2 related to the pathogenesis of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19). After transmembrane angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has been found to be SARS-CoV-2 receptor, we hypothesized an immune-hematological mechanism for Covid-19 based on renin-angiotensin system (RAS) imbalance to explain clinical, laboratory and imaging findings on disease course. We believe that exaggerated activation of ACE/Angiotensin II (Ang II)/Angiotensin Type 1 (AT1) receptor RAS axis in line with reduction of ACE2/Angiotensin-(1-7)/Mas receptor may exert a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of Covid-19. In this perspective, we discuss potential mechanisms and evidence on this hypothesis.

The addition of organic wastes is a common agronomic practice in some Mediterranean regions to increase soil organic matter. In addition, they consume high amounts of agrochemicals. Hand-packed soil columns were used to evaluate the effect of three different composted organic soil amendments (agro-forestry, agro-industrial and animal manure) on the leachability of eight persistent herbicides. A new leaching index based on the amounts recovered from leachates and referred as Experimental Leaching Index (ELI) is proposed according to the mean annual precipitation in a specific place. This index is compared with others such as Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS), Relative Leaching Potential Index (RLPI) and Leachability Index (LIX), which only include degradation (DT50) and sorption (KOC) parameters. According to ELI, metribuzin is very mobile in all cases, while terbuthylazine, chlorotoluron and isoproturon present high leachability only in unamended soil reducing their leaching potential in amended soils. Aclonifen, oxyfluorfen, trifluralin and pendimethalin behave in all cases as immobile (non-leacher) compounds.

The effect of vermicompost added to a loam soil on the leaching behaviour of two herbicides (triclopyr and fluroxypyr) was examined. Mobility of the herbicides was assessed using disturbed soil columns under laboratory conditions. In both cases, the addition of vermicompost significantly increased the sorption of the compounds. For both, DT50 values were slightly higher in the amended soil, due to the increased adsorption. Rate constants (k) calculated according to pseudo-first order model were significantly lower in the case of triclopyr (very persistent), which led to a much lower degradation rate compared to fluroxypyr (persistent) in both unamended and amended soils. Values calculated for the experimental leaching index (ELI) in unamended and amended soils showed medium and high leachability for fluroxypyr (0.31 and 0.29) and triclopyr (0.72 and 0.70), respectively. Other index-based screening models (GUS, RLPI, LIX) also catalogue both herbicides as potential leachers. Results confirm that triclopyr and fluroxypyr may contaminate groundwater resources.

The mobility of two relatively new antranilic diamide insecticides, cyanantraniliprole (CY) and cholantraniliprole (CH) in soil was examined, by means of disturbed columns loaded with a typical semiarid Mediterranean soil (Calcaric fluvisol) under laboratory conditions. Both insecticides appeared in leachates, with 52% of CY and 41% of CH of the initial mass added (1 µg g-1) present. For CY, 21% and 19% were recovered from the upper and bottom layers of the soil, respectively, while for CH, 33% and 22% were recovered from the upper and bottom layers respectively. Based on the calculated half-lives (29 and 27 days for CY and CH, respectively) and their log K OC (about 2.5 for both), the calculated Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) index was higher than 5 for both, indicating they have the potential to leach. Two transformation products, C13H9Cl2N2O (IN-ECD73) and C19H12BrClN6O (IN-J9Z38) corresponding to the degradation of CH and CY, respectively were also identified and detected in leachates and soil.

INTRODUCTION: Adult chronic idiopathic hydrocephalus (ACIH) is a cause of dementia that can be treated by implanting a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VPS). We aim to study clinical and functional outcomes in patients with ACIH corrected with a VPS. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Observational cohort study of patients diagnosed with probable ACIH (Japan Neurosurgical Society guidelines) and undergoing shunt placement between 2008 and 2013 in a centre of reference for neurosurgery in Spain. Clinical improvement was classified in 4 categories (resolution, partial improvement, equivocal improvement, and no improvement); functional outcome was assessed on the modified Rankin scale (mRS). RESULTS: The study included 29 patients with a mean age of 73.9 years; 62.1% were male and 65.5% had hypertension. Clinical improvement (complete or partial) was observed in 58% after one year and in 48% by the end of the follow-up period (mean follow-up time was 37.8 months). Older age, presence of hypertension, and surgery-related complications were more prevalent in the group responding poorly to treatment. One patient died, 20.7% experienced severe complications, and 69% were dependent (mRS ≥ 3) by the end of the follow-up period. Age at diagnosis was independently associated with poorer clinical response at one year and a higher degree of dependency by the end of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Symptomatic benefits offered by VPS were partial and transient; treatment was associated with a high complication rate and poor functional outcomes in the long term, especially in the oldest patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The risk of stroke recurrence in patients with Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Source (ESUS) is high, and the optimal antithrombotic strategy for secondary prevention is unclear. We investigated whether congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes mellitus, and stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA; CHADS2) and CHA2DS2-VASc scores can stratify the long-term risk of ischemic stroke/TIA recurrence and death in ESUS. METHODS: We pooled data sets of 11 stroke registries from Europe and America. ESUS was defined according to the Cryptogenic Stroke/ESUS International Working Group. Cox regression analyses were performed to investigate if prestroke CHADS2 and congestive heart failure, hypertension, age ≥75 years, diabetes mellitus, stroke or TIA, vascular disease, age 65-74 years, sex category (CHA2DS2-VASc) scores were independently associated with the risk of ischemic stroke/TIA recurrence or death. The Kaplan-Meier product limit method was used to estimate the cumulative probability of ischemic stroke/TIA recurrence and death in different strata of the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores. RESULTS: One hundred fifty-nine (5.6% per year) ischemic stroke/TIA recurrences and 148 (5.2% per year) deaths occurred in 1095 patients (median age, 68 years) followed-up for a median of 31 months. Compared with CHADS2 score 0, patients with CHADS2 score 1 and CHADS2 score >1 had higher risk of ischemic stroke/TIA recurrence (hazard ratio [HR], 2.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.41-4.00 and HR, 2.72; 95% CI, 1.68-4.40, respectively) and death (HR, 3.58; 95% CI, 1.80-7.12, and HR, 5.45; 95% CI, 2.86-10.40, respectively). Compared with low-risk CHA2DS2-VASc score, patients with high-risk CHA2DS2-VASc score had higher risk of ischemic stroke/TIA recurrence (HR, 3.35; 95% CI, 1.94-5.80) and death (HR, 13.0; 95% CI, 4.7-35.4). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of recurrent ischemic stroke/TIA and death in ESUS is reliably stratified by CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores. Compared with the low-risk group, patients in the high-risk CHA2DS2-VASc group have much higher risk of ischemic stroke recurrence/TIA and death, approximately 3-fold and 13-fold, respectively.

The capability of synthesizing Fe-based antiferromagnetic metal alloys would fuel the use of electrodeposition in the design of new magnetic devices such as high-aspect-ratio spin valves or new nanostructured hard magnetic composites. Here we report the synthesis of high quality antiferromagnetic FeMn alloys electrodeposited from chloride-based electrolytes. We have found that in order to grow homogeneous FeMn films it is necessary to incorporate a large concentration of NH4Cl as an additive in the electrolyte. The study of the structure and magnetic properties shows that films with composition close to Fe50Mn50 are homogeneous antiferromagnetic alloys. We have established a parameter window for the synthesis of FeMn alloys that show antiferromagnetism at room temperature.

In this study, a critical review was carried out using the Web of ScienceTM Core Collection database to analyse the scientific literature published to date to identify lines of research and future perspectives on the presence of chemical pollutants in beer brewing. Beer is one of the world's most popular drinks and the most consumed alcoholic beverage. However, a widespread challenge with potential implications for human and animal health is the presence of physical, chemical, and/or microbiological contaminants in beer. Biogenic amines, heavy metals, mycotoxins, nitrosamines, pesticides, acrylamide, phthalates, bisphenols, microplastics, and, to a lesser extent, hydrocarbons (aliphatic chlorinated and polycyclic aromatic), carbonyls, furan-derivatives, polychlorinated biphenyls, and trihalomethanes are the main chemical pollutants found during the beer brewing process. Pollution sources include raw materials, technological process steps, the brewery environment, and packaging materials. Different chemical pollutants have been found during the beer brewing process, from barley to beer. Brewing steps such as steeping, kilning, mashing, boiling, fermentation, and clarification are critical in reducing the levels of many of these pollutants. As a result, their residual levels are usually below the maximum levels allowed by international regulations. Therefore, this work was aimed at assessing how chemical pollutants appear and evolve in the brewing process, according to research developed in the last few decades.

Electrodes with nanostructured surface have emerged as promising low-impedance neural interfaces that can avoid the charge-injection restrictions typically associated to microelectrodes. In this work, we propose a novel approximation, based on a two-step template assisted electrodeposition technique, to obtain flexible nanostructured electrodes coated with core-shell Ni-Au vertical nanowires. These nanowires benefit from biocompatibility of the Au shell exposed to the environment and the mechanical properties of Ni that allow for nanowires longer and more homogeneous in length than their only-Au counterparts. The nanostructured electrodes show impedance values, measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), at least 9 times lower than those of flat reference electrodes. This ratio is in good accordance with the increased effective surface area determined both from SEM images and cyclic voltammetry measurements, evidencing that only Au is exposed to the medium. The observed EIS profile evolution of Ni-Au electrodes over 7 days were very close to those of Au electrodes and differently from Ni ones. Finally, the morphology, viability and neuronal differentiation of rat embryonic cortical cells cultured on Ni-Au NW electrodes were found to be similar to those on control (glass) substrates and Au NW electrodes, accompanied by a lower glial cell differentiation. This positive in-vitro neural cell behavior encourages further investigation to explore the tissue responses that the implantation of these nanostructured electrodes might elicit in healthy (damaged) neural tissues in vivo, with special emphasis on eventual tissue encapsulation.

INTRODUCTION: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is classified according to neurophysiological and histological findings, the inheritance pattern, and the underlying genetic defect. The objective of these guidelines is to offer recommendations for the diagnosis, prognosis, follow-up, and treatment of this disease in Spain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: These consensus guidelines were developed through collaboration by a multidisciplinary panel encompassing a broad group of experts on the subject, including neurologists, paediatric neurologists, geneticists, physiatrists, and orthopaedic surgeons. RECOMMENDATIONS: The diagnosis of CMT is clinical, with patients usually presenting a common or classical phenotype. Clinical assessment should be followed by an appropriate neurophysiological study; specific recommendations are established for the parameters that should be included. Genetic diagnosis should be approached sequentially; once PMP22 duplication has been ruled out, if appropriate, a next-generation sequencing study should be considered, taking into account the limitations of the available techniques. To date, no pharmacological disease-modifying treatment is available, but symptomatic management, guided by a multidiciplinary team, is important, as is proper rehabilitation and orthopaedic management. The latter should be initiated early to identify and improve the patient's functional deficits, and should include individualised exercise guidelines, orthotic adaptation, and assessment of conservative surgeries such as tendon transfer. The follow-up of patients with CMT is exclusively clinical, and ancillary testing is not necessary in routine clinical practice.

Sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) are a family of environmentally compatible herbicides but their high water solubility, moderate to high mobility through the soil profile, and slow degradation rate make them potential contaminants of groundwater as demonstrated in this paper. The photodegradation of a mixture of 30 SUHs in aqueous suspensions of semiconductor materials (ZnO and TiO2 in tandem with Na2S2O8 as electron acceptor) under artificial light (300-460 nm) irradiation was investigated. As expected, the influence of both semiconductors on the degradation of SUHs was very significant in all cases. Photocatalytic experiments show that the addition of photocatalyst, especially for the ZnO/Na2S2O8 system, greatly improves the removal of SUHs compared with photolytic tests, significantly increasing the reaction rates. The first-order equation (monophasic model) satisfactorily explained the disappearance process although it overlooked small residues remaining late in the process. These residues are important from an environmental point of view and the Hoerl function (biphasic model), was a better predicter of the results obtained. In our conditions, the average time required for 90% degradation was about 3 and 30 min for ZnO/Na2S2O8 and TiO2/Na2S2O8 systems, respectively.

Nanomaterials design, synthesis, and characterization are ever-expanding approaches toward developing biodevices or neural interfaces to treat neurological diseases. The ability of nanomaterials features to tune neuronal networks' morphology or functionality is still under study. In this work, we unveil how interfacing mammalian brain cultured neurons and iron oxide nanowires' (NWs) orientation affect neuronal and glial densities and network activity. Iron oxide NWs were synthesized by electrodeposition, fixing the diameter to 100 nm and the length to 1 µm. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman, and contact angle measurements were performed to characterize the NWs' morphology, chemical composition, and hydrophilicity. Hippocampal cultures were seeded on NWs devices, and after 14 days, the cell morphology was studied by immunocytochemistry and confocal microscopy. Live calcium imaging was performed to study neuronal activity. Using random nanowires (R-NWs), higher neuronal and glial cell densities were obtained compared with the control and vertical nanowires (V-NWs), while using V-NWs, more stellate glial cells were found. R-NWs produced a reduction in neuronal activity, while V-NWs increased the neuronal network activity, possibly due to a higher neuronal maturity and a lower number of GABAergic neurons, respectively. These results highlight the potential of NWs manipulations to design ad hoc regenerative interfaces.

This paper reviews the impact of beer-making stages (malting, mashing, boiling, and fermentation) on the behavior of pesticide residues. The large use of pesticides on barley and hop could cause the occurrence of their residues in beer. The foremost factors influencing the stability of residues (pH, temperature, and water content) and the physical-chemical properties of pesticides (octanol-water partition coefficient, vapor pressure, and water solubility) are essential to know their final fate. Most pesticides show a decrease in the unhopped wort because they are adsorbed onto the spent grains after mashing. In addition, their concentrations decrease during boiling and fermentation. Generally, maltsters should dedicate particular attention to the residues of hydrophobic pesticides because they can remain on the malt. Contrarily, brewers should control residues of hydrophilic pesticides because they can be carried over into young beer, disturbing the quality and organoleptic properties (flavor, aroma, taste, or color) of the beer.

Isavuconazole is a triazole antifungal agent recently recommended as first-line therapy for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. With the COVID-19 pandemic, cases of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) have been described with a prevalence ranging from 5 to 30%. We developed and validated a population pharmacokinetic (PKpop) model of isavuconazole plasma concentrations in intensive care unit patients with CAPA. Nonlinear mixed-effect modeling Monolix software were used for PK analysis of 65 plasma trough concentrations from 18 patients. PK parameters were best estimated with a one-compartment model. The mean of ISA plasma concentrations was 1.87 [1.29-2.25] mg/L despite prolonged loading dose (72 h for one-third) and a mean maintenance dose of 300 mg per day. Pharmacokinetics (PK) modeling showed that renal replacement therapy (RRT) was significantly associated with under exposure, explaining a part of clearance variability. The Monte Carlo simulations suggested that the recommended dosing regimen did not achieve the trough target of 2 mg/L in a timely manner (72 h). This is the first isavuconazole PKpop model developed for CAPA critical care patients underlying the need of therapeutic drug monitoring, especially for patients under RRT.

RESUMEN

The magnetization patterns on three atomic layers thick islands of Co on Ru(0001) are studied by spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). In-plane magnetized micrometer wide triangular Co islands are grown on Ru(0001). They present two different orientations correlated with two different stacking sequences which differ only in the last layer position. The stacking sequence determines the type of magnetization pattern observed: the hcp islands present very wide domain walls, while the fcc islands present domains separated by much narrower domain walls. The former is an extremely low in-plane anisotropy system. We estimate the in-plane magnetic anisotropy of the fcc regions to be 1.96 × 104 J m-3 and of the hcp ones to be 2.5 × 102 J m-3.

Dithiocarbamate Fungicides (DTFs) are widely analyzed and studied mainly due to the fact that they play an important role in the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. This manuscript aims to display the results of a bibliometric analysis based on the Web of Science© database, performed in the DTF and food research area. A total of 374 publications were examined. The most scientific production was concentrated between 2012 and 2021, showing a decrease of 32% over the last two years. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, India, and Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology were the most productive journal, country, and institution, respectively. Reference Publication Year Spectroscopy index showed a decrease of 95% in the last last years studied. Finally, current and future trends should focus on keywords such as individual DTF (Mancozeb, Thiram and Maneb), metabolites (Ethylenethiourea, Propilenthiourea) and a change in the analysis methodology: HPLC versus traditional GC.

RESUMEN

Generation, manipulation, and sensing of magnetic domain walls are cornerstones in the design of efficient spintronic devices. Half-metals are amenable for this purpose as large low field magnetoresistance signals can be expected from spin accumulation at spin textures. Among half metals, La1- x Srx MnO3 (LSMO) manganites are considered as promising candidates for their robust half-metallic ground state, Curie temperature above room temperature (Tc = 360 K, for x = 1/3), and chemical stability. Yet domain wall magnetoresistance is poorly understood, with large discrepancies in the reported values and conflicting interpretation of experimental data due to the entanglement of various source of magnetoresistance, namely, spin accumulation, anisotropic magnetoresistance, and colossal magnetoresistance. In this work, the domain wall magnetoresistance is measured in LSMO cross-shape nanowires with single-domain walls nucleated across the current path. Magnetoresistance values above 10% are found to be originating at the spin accumulation caused by the mistracking effect of the spin texture of the domain wall by the conduction electrons. Fundamentally, this result shows the importance on non-adiabatic processes at spin textures despite the strong Hund coupling to the localized t2g electrons of the manganite. These large magnetoresistance values are high enough for encoding and reading magnetic bits in future oxide spintronic sensors.
