RESUMEN

Understanding the scale of marine population connectivity is critical for the conservation and sustainable management of marine resources. For many marine species adults are benthic and relatively immobile, so patterns of larval dispersal and recruitment provide the key to understanding marine population connectivity. Contrary to previous expectations, recent studies have often detected unexpectedly low dispersal and fine-scale population structure in the sea, leading to a paradigm shift in how marine systems are viewed. Nonetheless, the link between fine-scale marine population structure and the underlying physical and biological processes has not been made. Here we show that patterns of genetic structure and population connectivity in the broadcast-spawning and long-distance dispersing sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii are influenced by physical oceanographic and geographic variables. Despite weak genetic differentiation and no isolation-by-distance over thousands of kilometers among samples from eastern Australia and northern New Zealand, fine-scale genetic structure was associated with sea surface temperature (SST) variability and geography along the southeastern Australian coast. The zone of high SST variability is characterized by periodic shedding of eddies from the East Australian Current, and we suggest that ocean current circulation may, through its influence on larval transport and recruitment, interact with the genetic consequences of large variance in individual reproductive success to generate patterns of fine-scale patchy genetic structure. If proven consistent across species, our findings suggest that the optimal scale for fisheries management and reserve design should vary among localities in relation to regional oceanographic variability and coastal geography.

RESUMEN

Twenty-five emotionally disturbed children were tested on the Lafayette Clinic Cognitive Perceptual Motor (CPM) battery. The children were next examined for vestibular function by measuring ocular nystagmus for three different rotation rates. Under conditions of eye closure, children found to have two or more marked CPM deficits demonstrated a significantly reduced amplitude of postrotatory nystagmus as compared to CPM nondeficit children, and for the slowest rate of rotation (30 degrees/sec), a significantly decreased duration of nystagmus.

RESUMEN

Basic research in autism is reviewed. There is mounting indication, but as yet inconclusive evidence, of unique physiologic disturbances etiologically related to autism. Additionally there is indication that some of the physiologic disturbances found in autistic children are also present in children with other developmental disorders. Children called autistic probably represent a complex of clinically similar manifestations in a variety of different subgroups of children, each subgroup representing a basically different physiologic disturbance. However, the possibility remains that there is only one basic disturbance that in varying degrees affects many body systems and thus manifests in a variety of overlapping syndromes. Objective markers are needed so as to allow the demarcation of subgroups of autistic children for further study. Possible markers may be decreased duration of postrotatory nystagmus, auditory evoked response deviations, lymphocytic hyporesponsivity, increased blood platelet serotonin efflux, and/or the presence of urinary DMT or bufotenin.

RESUMEN

The relationship between adolescent psychiatric inpatients' and their parents' drug use was studied using a questionnaire format. The major finding was that there was no systematic relationship. It is hypothesized that due to recent family realignments, adolescents are turning away from their parents and toward peers for their role models in drug use.

RESUMEN

The present study analyzes the effects of milieu treatment on 169 teenagers admitted to a midwestern state psychiatric facility. Pre- and post-hospitalization data for both males and females indicate improved functioning in all the areas studied.

RESUMEN

The case findings of thirty-three children given a diagnosis of psychosis during hospitalization in the '50s and '60s were reviewed and rediagnosed in 1973. Childhood schizophrenia was the original diagnosis in 58% of the cases but was the rediagnosis in only 18% of those same cases. Chronic brain syndrome with various reactions (psychotic reaction, nonpsychotic behavioral reaction, and mental retardation and autism) was the diagnosis in 27% of the cases, originally, but was given to 67% of the cases on rediagnosis. One-third of the children originally diagnosed as psychotic were rediagnosed as nonpsychotic. Approximately two-thirds of the children were nonpsychotic according to the DeMyer-Churchill guidelines.

RESUMEN

The efficacy of inpatient hospitalization on emotionally impaired adolescents was investigated using present and past MMPI data. The results indicated that there is a "flattening of the profile toward normalcy" from time of admission to discharge time. Further statistical analysis revealed that of the 9 clinical MMPI scales, the "Depression" scale showed greatest change toward improvement.

RESUMEN

Ten children diagnosed as psychotic by the DeMeyer-Churchill guidelines were matched for age and sex with ten non-psychotic but emotionally disturbed children. Six of the ten pairs were medication free. In four of the ten pairs, at least one member was medicated at the time of testing. The plasma of the children diagnosed as psychotic caused a significantly (p less than 0.025) greater uptake of tryptophan by chicken red blood cells than did the serum of their control group. This is the same effect on tryptophan uptake as found when the plasma of adult patients with process schizophrenia is incubated with chicken erythrocytes and tryptophan. This finding lends support to the possibility that there is a subgroup of childhood psychotic patients who have a biological disturbance similar to that found in adult process schizophrenia patients.

RESUMEN

Several recent studies have described the benefits of fenfluramine for the symptomatic treatment of infantile autism. No large surveys of side effects of this drug have been reported in autistic children. To evaluate the untoward effects of fenfluramine in children with autism, 12 subjects were systematically studied. Medication was administered in a double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over study. Parents were trained in monitoring untoward effects. These observations were compiled in detailed daily notes. In addition, four cases describing unusual effects found in a sample of 170 patients treated with fenfluramine are also reported. In the initial 2 weeks of active drug listlessness, food refusal, and stomach upset were frequently seen. A different pattern of untoward effects was seen in the final 14 weeks of treatment. Irritability, agitation, and crying along with continued food refusal were noted. The subjects lost 2.1% of body weight during active drug phase, but there was a rebound weight gain during the subsequent placebo phase. A thorough understanding of fenfluramine's side effects and adverse reactions is necessary so as to differentiate them from the multiple symptoms inherent in the syndrome of autism.
