RESUMEN

RNA modifications, including N6-methyladenosine (m6A), critically modulate protein expression programs in a range of cellular processes. Although the transcriptomes of cells undergoing senescence are strongly regulated, the landscape and impact of m6A modifications during senescence are poorly understood. Here, we report a robust m6A modification of PTCHD4 mRNA, encoding Patched Domain-Containing Protein 4, in senescent cells. The METTL3/METTL14 complex was found to incorporate the m6A modification on PTCHD4 mRNA; addition of m6A rendered PTCHD4 mRNA more stable and increased PTCHD4 production. MeRIP RT-qPCR and eCLIP analyses were used to map this m6A modification to the last exon of PTCHD4 mRNA. Further investigation identified IGF2BP1, but not other m6A readers, as responsible for the stabilization and increased abundance of m6A-modified PTCHD4 mRNA. Silencing PTCHD4, a transmembrane protein, enhanced growth arrest and DNA damage in pre-senescent cells and sensitized them to senolysis and apoptosis. Our results indicate that m6A modification of PTCHD4 mRNA increases the production of PTCHD4, a protein associated with senescent cell survival, supporting the notion that regulating m6A modification on specific mRNAs could be exploited to eliminate senescent cells for therapeutic benefit.

Senescent cells are beneficial for repairing acute tissue damage, but they are harmful when they accumulate in tissues, as occurs with advancing age. Senescence-associated extracellular vesicles (S-EVs) can mediate cell-to-cell communication and export intracellular content to the microenvironment of aging tissues. Here, we studied the uptake of EVs from senescent cells (S-EVs) and proliferating cells (P-EVs) and found that P-EVs were readily taken up by proliferating cells (fibroblasts and cervical cancer cells) while S-EVs were not. We thus investigated the surface proteome (surfaceome) of P-EVs relative to S-EVs derived from cells that had reached senescence via replicative exhaustion, exposure to ionizing radiation, or treatment with etoposide. We found that relative to P-EVs, S-EVs from all senescence models were enriched in proteins DPP4, ANXA1, ANXA6, S10AB, AT1A1, and EPHB2. Among them, DPP4 was found to selectively prevent uptake by proliferating cells, as ectopic overexpression of DPP4 in HeLa cells rendered DPP4-expressing EVs that were no longer taken up by other proliferating cells. We propose that DPP4 on the surface of S-EVs makes these EVs refractory to internalization by proliferating cells, advancing our knowledge of the impact of senescent cells in aging-associated processes.

Oligomeric enzymes containing multiple active sites are usually considered to perform their catalytic action at higher rates when compared with their monomeric counterparts. This implies, in turn, that the activity performed by different holoenzyme subunits features additivity. Nevertheless, the extent of this additivity occurring in holoenzymes is far from being adequately understood. To tackle this point, we used tetrameric rabbit lactate dehydrogenase (rbLDH) as a model system to assay the reduction of pyruvate catalysed by this enzyme at the expense of ß-NADH under pre-steady-state conditions. In particular, we observed the kinetics of reactions triggered by concentrations of ß-NADH equimolar to 1, 2, 3, or all 4 subunits of the rbLDH holoenzyme, in the presence of an excess of pyruvate. Surprisingly, when the concentration of the limiting reactant exceeded that of a single holoenzyme subunit, we observed a sharp slowdown of the enzyme conformational rearrangements associated to the generation and the release of l-lactate. Furthermore, using a model to interpret the complex kinetics observed under the highest concentration of the limiting reactant, we estimated the diversity of the rates describing the action of the different rbLDH subunits.

The development of innovative products for restoring skin integrity and promoting wound healing is still a challenge. The aim of this work was to evaluate an innovative Spanish broom wound dressing impregnated with Glycyrrhiza glabra extract-loaded ufasomes to improve wound healing. Ufasomes were characterized in terms of size, polydispersity index, entrapment efficiency, zeta potential, and stability. In addition, in vitro release studies and biocompatibility, biosafety, and scratch tests on WS1 fibroblasts were performed. The loaded ufasomes showed a nanometric size (<250 nm), good size distribution (lower than 0.3), and appropriate encapsulation efficiency (~67%). Moreover, the lipid vesicles showed good stability during the storage period and allowed for a slow release of glycyrrhizin, the main bioactive compound of the extract. Biological studies revealed that loaded vesicles are not cytotoxic, are hemocompatible, and lead to the complete closure of the scratch after about 33 h. To conclude, the results suggest that the developed dressings can be efficiently used to promote the healing process.

Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP1) is one of the most powerful pro-inflammatory chemokines. However, its signaling is pivotal in driving injured axon and muscle regeneration. We previously reported that MCP1 is more strongly upregulated in the nervous system of slow-progressing than fast-progressing SOD1G93A mice, the latter showing a poor immune response and eventual massive nerve and muscle degeneration. To assess the MCP1-mediated therapeutic role, we boosted the chemokine along the motor unit of the two SOD1G93A models through a single intramuscular injection of a scAAV9 vector engineered with the Mcp1 gene. We provided direct evidence underlying the pivotal role of the immune response in driving skeletal muscle regeneration and thus the speed of ALS progression. The comparative study performed in fast- and slow-progressing SOD1G93A mice spotlights the nature and temporal activation of the inflammatory response as limiting factors to preserve the periphery and interfere with the disease course. In addition, we recorded a novel pleiotropic role of MCP1 in promoting peripheral axon regeneration and modulating neuroinflammation, ultimately preventing neurodegeneration. Altogether, these observations highlight the immune response as a key determinant for disease variability and proffer a reasonable explanation for the failure of systemic immunomodulatory treatments, suggesting new potential strategies to hamper ALS progression.

Alkaptonuria (AKU) is an ultra-rare genetic disease caused by a deficient activity of the enzyme homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase (HGD) leading to the accumulation of homogentisic acid (HGA) on connective tissues. Even though AKU is a multi-systemic disease, osteoarticular cartilage is the most affected system and the most damaged tissue by the disease. In chondrocytes, HGA causes oxidative stress dysfunctions, which induce a series of not fully characterized cellular responses. In this study, we used a human chondrocytic cell line as an AKU model to evaluate, for the first time, the effect of HGA on autophagy, the main homeostasis system in articular cartilage. Cells responded timely to HGA treatment with an increase in autophagy as a mechanism of protection. In a chronic state, HGA-induced oxidative stress decreased autophagy, and chondrocytes, unable to restore balance, activated the chondroptosis pathway. This decrease in autophagy also correlated with the accumulation of ochronotic pigment, a hallmark of AKU. Our data suggest new perspectives for understanding AKU and a mechanistic model that rationalizes the damaging role of HGA.

Long non-coding RNAs are emerging as essential regulators of gene expression, but their role in normal and neoplastic B cells is still largely uncharacterized. Here, we report on the expression pattern of the LINC00152 in normal B cells and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia B cell clones. Higher LINC00152 levels were consistently observed in memory B cell populations when compared to naïve B cells in the normal tissues analyzed [peripheral blood (PB), tonsils, and spleen]. In addition, independent stimulation via Immunoglobulins (IG), CD40, or Toll-like Receptor 9 (TLR9) upregulated LINC00152 in PB B cells. The expression of LINC00152 in a cohort of 107 early stage Binet A CLL patients was highly variable and did not correlate with known prognostic markers or clinical evolution. TLR9 stimulation, but not CD40 or IG challenge, was able to upregulate LINC00152 expression in CLL cells. In addition, LINC00152 silencing in CLL cell lines expressing LINC00152 failed to induce significant cell survival or apoptosis changes. These data suggest that, in normal B cells, the expression of LINC00152 is regulated by immunomodulatory signals, which are only partially effective in CLL cells. However, LINC00152 does not appear to contribute to CLL cell expansion and/or survival in a cohort of newly diagnosed CLL patients.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) can affect multiple layers of gene expression to control crucial cellular functions. We have previously demonstrated that the lncRNA EPR, by controlling gene expression at different levels, affects cell proliferation and migration in cultured mammary gland cells and impairs breast tumor formation in an orthotopic transplant model in mice. Here, we used ChIRP-Seq to identify EPR binding sites on chromatin of NMuMG mammary gland cells overexpressing EPR and identified its trans binding sites in the genome. Then, with the purpose of relating EPR/chromatin interactions to the reshaping of the epitranscriptome landscape, we profiled histone activation marks at promoter/enhancer regions by ChIP-Seq. Finally, we integrated data derived from ChIRP-Seq, ChIP-Seq as well as RNA-Seq in a comprehensive analysis and we selected a group of bona fide direct transcriptional targets of EPR. Among them, we identified a subset of EPR targets whose expression is controlled by TGF-ß with one of them-Arrdc3-being able to modulate Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition. This experimental framework allowed us to correlate lncRNA/chromatin interactions with the real outcome of gene expression and to start defining the gene network regulated by EPR as a component of the TGF-ß pathway.

Different molecular mechanisms contribute to the development of multidrug resistance in cancer, including increased drug efflux, enhanced cellular repair mechanisms and alterations of drug metabolism or drug targets. ABCG2 is a member of the ATP-binding cassette superfamily transporters that promotes drug efflux, inducing chemotherapeutic resistance in malignant cells. In this context, the development of selective ABCG2 inhibitors might be a suitable strategy to improve chemotherapy efficacy. Thus, through a multidisciplinary approach, we identified a new ABCG2 selective inhibitor (8), highlighting its ability to increase mitoxantrone cytotoxicity in both hepatocellular carcinoma (EC50from 8.67 ± 2.65 to 1.25 ± 0.80 µM) and transfected breast cancer cell lines (EC50from 9.92 ± 2.32 to 2.45 ± 1.40 µM). Moreover, mitoxantrone co-administration in both transfected and non-transfected HEK293 revealed that compound 8 notably lowered the mitoxantrone EC50, demonstrating its efficacy along with the importance of the ABCG2 extrusion pump overexpression in MDR reversion. These results were corroborated by evaluating the effect of inhibitor 8 on mitoxantrone cell uptake in multicellular tumor spheroids and via proteomic experiments.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant disease characterized by poor prognosis due to a high incidence of metastasis and chemoresistance. Recently, Licochalcone A (Lic-A) has been reported as a promising agent against OS. Starting from chalcones selected from a wide in-house library, a new series was designed and synthetized. The antitumor activity of the compounds was tested on the MG63 OS cell line through the innovative Quantitative Phase Imaging technique and MTT assay. To further investigate the biological profile of active derivatives, cell cycle progression and apoptosis induction were evaluated. An earlier and more consistent arrest in the G2-M phase with respect to Lic-A was observed. Moreover, apoptosis was assessed by Annexin V staining as well as by the detection of typical morphological features of apoptotic cells. Among the selected compounds, 1e, 1q, and 1r proved to be the most promising antitumor molecules. This study pointed out that an integrated methodological approach may constitute a valuable platform for the rapid screening of large series of compounds.

Although meditation has been used to alleviate somatic symptoms in adults, there is little literature on this issue in children. School-based meditation programs are mainly used to increase attention control and self-awareness in children. Here, however, we evaluate the effects of a three-month school-based psychoeducational meditation and interoceptive awareness program (EETB) on somatic symptoms in 281 children (126 females and 155 males) aged 6-9 years. Outcome measures were scores on the Children's Somatisation Inventory (CSI) and KidScreen-10 for quality of life (QoL), administered at baseline and over the three-month program. ANOVA repeated measures showed a reduction in somatic symptoms (F = 46.43; P < .0001; η = .14; Cohen's d effect size: 0.538) while there was little effect on QoL (F = 4.63, P = .003; η = 0.016; Cohen's d effect size: 0.010). Emotional awareness (EA) influenced QoL, but not CSI outcome. The EETB program is effective at reducing somatic symptoms, even one month after baseline. As EA cognitive abilities increase after age 8, the application of this project in even younger children indicates that a state of general well-being requires enough emotional awareness to be perceived.

BACKGROUND: New microfat preparations provide material suitable for use as a regenerative filler for different facial areas. To support the development of new robust techniques for regenerative purposes, the cellular content of the sample should be considered. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cell components of micro-superficial enhanced fluid fat injection (SEFFI) samples via a technique to harvest re-injectable tissue with minimum manipulation. The results were compared to those obtained from SEFFI samples. METHODS: Microscopy analysis was performed to visualize the tissue structure. Micro-SEFFI samples were also fractionated using Celector,® an innovative non-invasive separation technique, to provide an initial evaluation of sample fluidity and composition. SVFs obtained from SEFFI and micro-SEFFI were studied. Adipose stromal cells (ASCs) were isolated and characterized by proliferation and differentiation capacity assays. RESULTS: Microscopic and quality analyses of micro-SEFFI samples by Celector® confirmed the high fluidity and sample cellular composition in terms of red blood cell contamination, the presence of cell aggregates, and extracellular matrix fragments. ASCs were isolated from adipose tissue harvested using SEFFI and micro-SEFFI systems. These cells were demonstrated to have a good proliferation rate and differentiation potential towards mesenchymal lineages. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the small sizes and low cellularity observed in micro-SEFFI-derived tissue, we were able to isolate stem cells. This result partially explains the regenerative potential of autologous micro-SEFFI tissue grafts. In addition, using this novel Celector® technology, tissues used for aging treatment were characterized analytically, and the adipose tissue composition was evaluated with no need for extra sample processing.

Stem cells undergo senescence both in vivo, contributing to the progressive decline in self-healing mechanisms, and in vitro during prolonged expansion. Here, we show that an early developmental zebrafish embryo extract (ZF1) could act as a modulator of senescence in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) isolated from both adult tissues, including adipose tissue (hASCs), bone marrow (hBM-MSCs), dental pulp (hDP-MSCs), and a perinatal tissue such as the Wharton's Jelly (hWJ-MSCs). In all the investigated hMSCs, ZF1 decreased senescence-associated ß-galactosidase (SA ß-gal) activity and enhanced the transcription of TERT, encoding the catalytic telomerase core. In addition, it was associated, only in hASCs, with a transcriptional induction of BMI1, a pleiotropic repressor of senescence. In hBM-MSCs, hDP-MSCs, and hWJ-MSCs, TERT over-expression was concomitant with a down-regulation of two repressors of TERT, TP53 (p53), and CDKN1A (p21). Furthermore, ZF1 increased the natural ability of hASCs to perform adipogenesis. These results indicate the chance of using ZF1 to modulate stem cell senescence in a source-related manner, to be potentially used as a tool to affect stem cell senescence in vitro. In addition, its anti-senescence action could also set the basis for future in vivo approaches promoting tissue rejuvenation bypassing stem cell transplantation.

OBJECTIVES: This retrospective, multicentric study investigates quality-of-life issues and emotional distress in gynecological cancer survivors submitted to pelvic exenteration (PE). METHODS: The Global Health Status scale of European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Core Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30; the EORTC QLQ-CX24 (CX24), and EORTC QLQ-OV28 questionnaires were administered at least 12 months from surgery only in women with no evidence of further recurrence after PE. Statistical analysis was performed by the analysis of variance (for repeated measures. RESULTS: Ninety-six subjects affected by gynecological malignancies receiving PE were enrolled in the study. Anterior PE was performed in 47 patients (49%), posterior PE was performed in 29 cases (30.2%), and total PE performed in 20 women (20.8%). In 38 cases (39.6%), a definitive colostomy was performed. Urinary diversion with continent pouch was created in 11 patients. (11.5%), whereas in the remaining cases, a noncontinent pouch was reconstructed. Patients showed a significant discomfort in attitude to disease (71.5 ± 4.7), body image (48.9 ± 6.4), financial difficulties (56.2 ± 5.8), gastrointestinal symptoms (constipation, 47.8 ± 5.1; diarrhea, 62.4 ± 6.6; appetite loss, 43.6 ± 6.7), insomnia (64.5 ± 6.6), Global Health Status (64.6 ± 3.8), physical functioning (65.8 ± 4.6), role functioning (58.8 ± 5.8), and emotional functioning (67.4 ± 4.2). A higher number of ostomies (hazard rate [HR], 7.613; P = 0.012), the creation of a noncontinent bladder (HR, 8.230; P = 0.009), and of definitive colostomy (HR, 8.516; P = 0.008) emerged as independent predictors of poorer Global Health Status scores. Older age (HR, 11.235; P = 0.003), vaginal/vulvar cancer (HR, 7.369; P = 0.013), total/posterior PE (HR, 7.393; P = 0.013), higher number of ostomies (HR, 7.613; P = 0.012), the creation of a noncontinent bladder (HR, 8.230; P = 0.009), and of definitive colostomy (HR, 8.516; P = 0.008) emerged as independent predictors of lower body image levels. CONCLUSIONS: Long-term psycho-oncological support is strongly recommended. The reduction of ostomies seems the most effective way to improve patients' quality of life.

AIM: The success of Robot Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy (RALP) is mainly due to his relatively short learning curve. Twenty cases are needed to reach a "4 hours-proficiency". However, to achieve optimal functional outcomes such as urinary continence and potency recovery may require more experience. We aim to report the perioperative and early functional outcomes of patients undergoing RALP, after a structured modular training program. METHODS: A surgeon with no previous laparoscopic or robotic experience attained a 3 month modular training including: a) e-learning; b) assistance and training to the operating table; c) dry console training; d) step by step in vivo modular training performing 40 surgical steps in increasing difficulty, under the supervision of an experienced mentor. Demographics, intraoperative and postoperative functional outcomes were recorded after his first 120 procedures, considering four groups of 30 cases. RESULTS: All procedures were completed successfully without conversion to open approach. Overall 19 (15%) post operative complications were observed and 84% were graded as minor (Clavien I-II). Overall operative time and console time gradually decreased during the learning curve, with statistical significance in favour of Group 4. The overall continence rate at 1 and 3 months was 74% and 87% respectively with a significant improvement in continence rate throughout the four groups (p = 0.04). Considering those patients submitted to nerve-sparing procedure we found a significant increase in potency recovery over the four groups (p = 0.04) with the higher potency recovery rate up to 80% in the last 30 cases. CONCLUSIONS: Optimal perioperative and functional outcomes have been attained since early phase of the learning curve after an intensive structured modular training and less than 100 consecutive procedures seem needed in order to achieve optimal urinary continence and erectile function recovery.

In the field of sleep disorders, the quality of couple relationship is arousing increasing attention, given its implications for quality of life and treatment adherence. The aim of the present study was to evaluate relationship quality in a sample of treated or untreated patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome. Eighty-seven patients were recruited in a hospital-based Centre for Sleep Medicine. Subjects were administered the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) to evaluate relationship quality, and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Apnoea-hypopnoea indexes (AHI) were collected through nocturnal polysomnography or home testing with a portable monitoring device. Although the DAS average scores were similar to local normative values, relationship quality was significantly lower in the untreated patients when compared with the ones treated. The ESS scores showed a negative correlation with many DAS scores, whereas no significant correlation emerged for AHI. Such data suggest a significant impact of perceived sleep apnoea symptoms on marital satisfaction, even though in the absence of striking differences between the whole sample and the general population.

INTRODUCTION: Several definitions of erectile function (EF) recovery after bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy (BNSRP) have been proposed based on the results of the International Index of EF (IIEF). AIM: We aimed at evaluating overall satisfaction (OS) after BNSRP according to the ability to achieve the pretreatment EF. METHODS: We evaluated data of 652 patients treated with BNSRP for clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa). Erectile dysfunction (ED) was classified according to the IIEF-EF domain score. Return to baseline EF was defined as patients who reached the same preoperative ED category during the 3-year follow-up. Cox regression analyses were fitted to predict return to baseline IIEF-EF and to predict OS defined according to the IIEF-OS in the overall population. Logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze OS in men who reached the back to baseline status. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The outcome of the study was to evaluate back to baseline EF status and to correlate it with postoperative OS. RESULTS: Preoperative satisfaction was reported by 218 (33.4%) patients. Postoperative satisfaction was achieved by 103 patients. Overall, 383 patients were able to achieve the preoperative IIEF-EF score. However, only 26.9% reported being satisfied. Age and preoperative IIEF-EF score were significantly associated with baseline IIEF-EF recovery (all P ≤ .02). Patients who were able to return to baseline IIEF-EF were more likely to be satisfied (P < .001). Time elapsed between surgery and achievement of baseline IIEF-EF was significantly associated with OS (P < .001). Among patients who were able to achieve the baseline IIEF-EF score, a preoperative IIEF-EF of 22-25 and 26-30 was significantly associated with postoperative satisfaction (all P < .001). CONCLUSION: After BNSRP, reaching the baseline IIEF-EF score is not always sufficient to obtain patient satisfaction. Only patients with a preoperative IIEF-EF ≥22 who reached the baseline score after surgery considered themselves satisfied. This should be taken into account in preoperative patient counseling.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate morbidity, mortality, and long-term survival of patients who underwent pelvic exenteration (PE) with curative intent for recurrence of endometrial adenocarcinoma during a single decade. METHODS: We defined a cohort of 21 patients who met our inclusion criteria, referred to 4 cooperating gynecologic oncology settings in Germany and Italy between 2000 and 2011. Data regarding surgery, histology, and oncologic outcomes were collected and statistically evaluated. Survival was determined from the day of exenteration until the last follow-up or death. RESULTS: The median age was 66 years. A total of 42.9% of the patients had major complications, and a complete resection was achieved in 85.7% of the patients. A total of 71.4% of the patients had negative nodes. No patient died intraoperatively. The perioperative mortality, calculated within 30 days from PE, was 4.8%. The overall 5-year survival rate, evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method, was 40%. For the subgroup with complete resection and negative lymph nodes, overall survival reached 60%. CONCLUSIONS: Despite a high complication rate, PE for solitary pelvic recurrence of endometrial cancer yields a high rate of long-term survival.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the survival of patients who underwent pelvic exenteration (PE) with curative intent for primary persistent or recurrent cervical cancer. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 167 consecutive patients, referred to the gynecological oncology units of 4 centers in Germany or Italy, who underwent PE. Data regarding surgery, histology, and oncologic outcomes were collected and statistically evaluated. Survival was determined from the day of exenteration until last follow-up or death. RESULTS: The median age was 51 years. Twenty-seven patients (16.2%) underwent PE owing to advanced primary tumors (group A), 34 patients (20.4%) underwent PE owing to persistent cancer after chemotherapy or chemoradiation (group B), and 106 patients (63.4%) underwent PE owing to recurrence (group C). The prevalent histologic type was squamous cell cancer. A complete tumor resection (R0), was achieved in 121 patients (72.5%). Forty-nine patients (29.3%) had pelvic lymph node metastases and 44 patients (26.3%) had pelvic sidewall involvement. Overall survival at the end of the study was 40.7%. The cumulative 5-year overall survival for the entire cohort was 38%. Resection margins, pelvic lymph node state, and sidewall involvement were independent prognostic factors in multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: Pelvic exenteration is a valid therapeutic option for patients with locally advanced primary persistent or recurrent cervical cancer, with a long-term survival in 40% of the patients.

OBJECTIVE: Our study purpose was to evaluate morbidity and postoperative mortality in patients who underwent pelvic exenteration (PE) for primary or recurrent gynecological malignancies. METHODS: We identified 230 patients who underwent PE, referred to the gynecological oncology units of 4 institutions: Charitè University in Berlin, Friedrich-Schiller University in Jena, S. Orsola-Malpighi University in Bologna, and Catholic University in Rome and in Campobasso. RESULTS: The median age was 55 years. The tumor site was the cervix in 177 patients, the endometrium in 28 patients, the vulva in 16 patients, and the vagina in 9 patients. Sixty-eight anterior, 31 posterior, and 131 total PEs were performed in 116 women together with hysterectomy. A total of 82.6% of the patients required blood transfusion. The mean operative time was 446 (95-970) minutes, and the median hospitalization was 24 (7-210) days. We noted a major complication rate of 21.3% (n = 49). We registered 7 perioperative deaths (3%) calculated within 30 days. The operation was performed within clear margins in 166 patients (72.2%). The overall mortality rate depending on tumor site at the end of the study was 75% for vulvar cancer, 57.6% for cervical cancer, 55.6% for vaginal cancer, and 53.6% for endometrial cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Although an important effort for surgeons and for patients, PE remains a therapeutic option with an acceptable complication rate and postoperative mortality. A strict selection of patients is mandatory to reach adequate surgical and oncologic outcomes.
