RESUMEN

In our study, we aimed to evaluate the pathological response rates and side effect profile of adding pertuzumab to the treatment of HER2+ locally advanced, inflammatory, or early-stage breast cancer. This study was conducted by the Turkish Oncology Group (TOG) with data collected from 32 centers. Our study was multicentric, and a total of 364 patients were included. The median age of the patients was 49 years (18-85 years). Two hundred fifteen (60%) of the cases were hormone receptor/HER2+ positive(ER+ or PR+, or both), and 149 (40%) of them were HER2-rich (ER and PR negative). The number of complete responses was 124 (54%) in the docetaxel+trastuzumab+pertuzumab arm and 102 (45%) in the paclitaxel+trastuzumab+pertuzumab arm, and there was no difference between the groups in terms of complete response. In 226 (62%) patients with complete response, a significant correlation was found with DCIS, tumor focality, removed lymph node, and ER status P < 0.05. Anemia, nausea, vomiting, myalgia, alopecia, and mucosal inflammation were significantly higher in the docetaxel arm, P < 0.05. In our study, no statistical difference was found between the before-after echocardiography values. DCIS positivity in biopsy before neoadjuvant chemotherapy, tumor focality; the number of lymph nodes removed and ER status were found to be associated with pCR. In conclusion, we think that studies evaluating pCR-related clinicopathological variables and radiological imaging features will play a critical role in the development of nonsurgical treatment approaches.

RESUMEN

Gastric cancer is still one of the cancers with highest mortality. Most patients present with advanced-stage disease. Palliative chemotherapy is usually the only treatment option for patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Maintenance chemotherapy is an evolving concept in medical oncology. Maintenance chemotherapy can be administered with the same drug(s) in the initial regimen or with an alternative agent. In this article, we report our experience with capecitabine as a maintenance agent for patients with AGC. No treatment-related death was observed due to use of capecitabine. Median progression-free survival was 10.4 months, and median overall survival was 19.7 months. Activity and toxicity profile of capecitabine seems favorable as a maintenance agent in AGC. We believe that capecitabine deserves further trials as a maintenance agent for patients with AGC.

RESUMEN

AIM OF THE STUDY: Aim of the study was to investigate the demographics of Ewing sarcoma family of tumours (ESTF) patients, treatment alternatives, clinical outcomes, and prognostic factors for survival. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 39 patients with ESFT who were admitted to our institute between September 2008 and September 2012. RESULTS: The patients included 32 (82.1%) males and seven (17.9%) females of median age 24 (range, 18-66) years. Among the 27 patients with a primary osseous localization, 17 (43.5%) had a central axis localization. Fifteen patients (38.5%) had metastases at the time of diagnosis. Patients were followed up for a median period of 18 (range, 2-134) months. The median event-free survival (EFS) was 23 (range, 1-64) months, and the 1- and 4-year EFS were 60% and 48%, respectively. The median overall survival (OS) was 91 (range, 1-188) months, and the 1- and 4-year OS were 78% and 54%, respectively. Gender, age, primary tumor site, and local treatment modalities, either alone or in combination, did not have a significant effect on OS (p = 0.210, p = 0.617, p = 0.644, and p = 0.417, respectively). In contrast, osseous site of peripheral localization, limited stage, and metastasis to the bone significantly affected OS (p = 0.015, p < 0.001, and p = 0.042, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: ESFTs are aggressive tumors with a high rate of relapse and metastatic potential. Patients with peripheral bone involvement and limited stage had a good prognosis. Appropriate surgical resection, radiotherapy, and aggressive chemotherapy regimens are recommended.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Total or subtotal gastrectomy are performed as curative or palliative treatment in patients with gastric cancer. Anemia is a frequent complication of gastrectomy. Patients undergoing total or subtotal gastrectomy should be carefully monitored for the development of anemia and be given appropriate treatment when indicated. This survey-based study aimed to determine the level of knowledge about post-gastrectomy anemia in Turkish medical oncologists. METHODS: The study included 110 Turkish medical oncologists that agreed voluntarily to participate in the survey and answer an 8-item questionnaire. The survey was distributed as a questionnaire during the 5th Turkish Medical Oncology Congress in March 2014. RESULTS: All participants completed the questionnaire. Most of the participants would not recommend oral iron or cobalamin replacement after gastrectomy. CONCLUSION: The results of the survey indicate that Turkish medical oncologists have some knowledge about post-gastrectomy anemia, but need to learn more about appropriate follow-up and replacement therapies for post-gastrectomy anemia.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) is a heterogeneous disease. Several subgroups have been identified, according to the clinical presentation and radiographic, pathological, biological, and molecular characteristics of the tumor. Intrinsic genetic heterogeneity may be responsible for these differences. To date, little is known about the clinical features and outcome of patients with primary metastatic BC (PMBC) defined as those presenting with stage IV disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between September 2007 and May 2011, BC patients who were admitted to a clinic were assessed. Patients with PMBC were included in this retrospective analysis. The patients' demographic characteristics, treatment schedules, and survival data were recorded. RESULTS: Of 2478 BC patients, 102 (4.1%) with PMBC were included in the analysis. The median age of the patients was 50 (26-90) years. Only four patients (3.9%) had previously undergone mammography. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were 30 and 66 months, respectively. The PFS and OS were unaffected by age, menopausal status, ECOG, histology, or tumor grade. Both PFS and OS were affected by HR status (log rank p = 0.006, log rank p = 0.04), HER2 status (p = 0.001, p = 0.005), site of metastasis (p = 0.01, p = 0.04), radiotherapy (p = 0.04, OS p = 0.03), and bisphosphonate treatment (p = 0.02, p = 0.006). PFS was greater in the hormone therapy group (43 months, p = 0.03) while OS was greater in the patients that received chemotherapy (76 months, p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Mammography should be given greater emphasis, considering its importance in the prevention of PMBC. As a treatment option for bone and soft tissue metastatic PMBC patients, hormone therapy should be effective as a first-line treatment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The efficacy and tolerability of oxaliplatin in combination with either folinic acid, fluoro-uracil (5-FU) (FOLFOX4 regimen) or capecitabine (XE-LOX regimen) was evaluated in advanced pancreatic cancer. METHODOLOGY: In this study, eighty-five patients with advanced pancreatic cancer were enrolled after failing to gemcitabine-based chemotherapy between November 2005 and August 2011. FOLFOX4 was repeated every two weeks and XELOX regimen was repeated every three weeks until either disease progression or unacceptable toxicity occurred. RESULTS: Eighty-five patients were evaluated for tumor response.Seven patients (18%) achieved a partial response with XELOX and stable disease was observed in 16 patients (41%). Eight patients (17%) achieved a partial response with FOLFOX4 and stable disease was observed in 12 patients (26%). Disease control rates were 59%in the XELOX arm and 43% in the FOLFOX4 arm. The median time to progression was 16 weeks in both arms. The median overall survival was 21 weeks with XELOX and 25 weeks with FOLFOX4. CONCLUSIONS: Oxaliplatin-based combination therapy showed moderate clinical activity with acceptable toxicity in patients who had progressive disease after receiving gemcitabine-based chemotherapy for advanced and/or metastatic pancreatic cancer. We conclude that XELOX is similar in terms of efficacy and toxicity profile to FOLFOX4 in the sec-ond-line treatment of metastatic pancreatic cancer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Postmastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS) is defined as a chronic (continuing for 3 or more months) neuropathic pain affecting the axilla, medial arm, breast, and chest wall after breast cancer surgery. The prevalence of PMPS has been reported to range from 20% to 68%. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of PMPS among mastectomy patients, the severity of neuropathic pain in these patients, risk factors that contribute to pain becoming chronic, and the effect of PMPS on life quality. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was approved by the Sakarya University, Medical Faculty Ethical Council and included 146 patients ranging in age from 18 to 85 years who visited the pain clinic, general surgery clinic, and oncology clinic and had breast surgery between 2012 and 2014. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether they met PMPS criteria: pain at axilla, arm, shoulder, chest wall, scar tissue, or breast at least 3 months after breast surgery. All patients gave informed consent prior to entry into the study. Patient medical records were collected, and pain and quality of life were evaluated by the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, a short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), douleur neuropathique-4 (DN-4), and SF-36. RESULTS: Patient mean age was 55.2 ± 11.8 years (33.0-83.0 years). PMPS prevalence was 36%. Mean scores on the VAS, SF-MPQ, and DN-4 in PMPS patients were 1.76 ± 2.38 (0-10), 1.73 ± 1.54 (0-5), and 1.64 ± 2.31 (0-8), respectively. Of these patients, 31 (23.7%) had neuropathic pain characteristics, and 12 (9.2%) had phantom pain according to the DN-4 survey. Patients who had modified radical mastectomy were significantly more likely to develop PMPS than patients who had breast-protective surgery (P = 0.028). Only 2 (2.4%) of PMPS patients had received proper treatment (anticonvulsants or opioids). CONCLUSIONS: PMPS seriously impacts patients' emotional situation, daily activities, and social relationships and is a major economic burden for health systems. We conclude that the rate of PMPS among patients receiving breast cancer surgery in Turkey is 64.1% and that challenges to the proper treatment of these patients deserve further investigation.

RESUMEN

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process during which cancer cells become more invasive and chemo resistant. EMT may also be associated with tumor dormancy which prevents the cure of cancer with adjuvant treatment. Chemo resistance and dormancy may also decrease response to cytotoxic agents during treatment of metastatic disease. Voltage gated sodium channels (VGSCs) are overexpressed in many cancer types, particularly in those with more aggressive and metastatic potential. VGSCs are thought to be associated with increased invasive and migratory capacity of cancer cells. Inhibition of VGSCs may inhibit EMT and angiogenesis through interaction with intracellular calcium activity and endothelial cells respectively. Blockage of these channels combined with other anticancer therapies may be effective in both adjuvant and palliative setting. Colonization at secondary site may be decelerated by VGSCs inhibition through impeding angiogenesis. This may lead to a temporary palliation of symptoms related to tumor burden in patients with metastatic disease.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia (FN) with solid tumors causes mortality and morbidity at a significant rate. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of filgastrim and lenograstim started with the first dose of antibiotics in hospitalized patients diagnosed with FN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 2009 and May 2012, 151 patients diagnosed with FN were evaluated, retrospectively. In those considered appropriate for hospitalization, convenient antibiotic therapy with granulocyte colony stimulating factors was started within first 30 minutes by completing necessary examinations in accordance with FEN guide recommendations. RESULTS: In this study, 175 febrile neutropenia attacks in 151 patients were examined. Seventy three of the patients were male and 78 were female. The average age was 53.6 and 53.6, respectively. The most common solid tumor was breast carcinoma in 38 (25%) . One hundred and five FN patients (58%) were those who received granulocyte colony stimulating factors as primary prophylaxis. CONCLUSIONS: While studies comparing both drugs generally involve treatments started for prophylaxis, this study compared the treatment given during the febrile neutropenia attack. Compared to lenograstim, filgastrim shortens the duration of hospitalization during febrile neutropenia attack by facilitating faster recovery with solid tumors.

RESUMEN

Vitamin B12 (Cbl) deficiency may cause hematologic and neurologic dysfunction. Replacement therapy is effective in correcting hematologic abnormalities and improving neurologic symptoms. Cbl is known to have antioxidant activity. This antioxidant activity may antagonize the effects of chemotherapeutics (i.e. genotoxic effects of paclitaxel) on tumor DNA. We claim that Cbl replacement should be done more cautiously in patients receiving cytotoxic chemotherapy.

RESUMEN

Primary metastatic breast cancer (PMBC) comprises 3-10% of all BCs. PMBC is a heterogeneous disease. To date, little is known about the tumor characteristics, treatment results, and overall survival (OS) of patients with PMBC. Patients were considered to have PMBC if distant metastasis was evident within 3 months of the initial diagnosis of BC. Between September 2007 and April 2013, 466 PMBC patients were included in this study and analyzed retrospectively. The median age of the patients was 50 (18-90) years. Bone/soft tissue metastases were more frequent in the hormone receptor (HR)(+) human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER)2(-) group compared with the HR(-)HER2(-) and HR(-)HER2(+) groups (p < 0.001), whereas visceral organ metastasis was more frequent in the HR(-)HER2(-) and HR(-)HER2(+) groups (p < 0.001). The OS was affected by Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, tumor histology, receptor status, and the site of metastasis (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.011, respectively). According to the first-line systemic treatment choices of the patients, the longest median OS was observed in the HR(+)HER2(+) group who received hormonotherapy combined with trastuzumab after chemotherapy (86 months, 95% CI 23.8-148.1) and the shortest median OS was observed in the HR(-)HER2(-) group who received chemotherapy only (24 months, 95% CI 17.9-30.0) (p < 0.001). Bisphosphonate therapy or radiotherapy had no significant effect on OS (p = 0.733, 0.603). In multivariate analysis, hormonotherapy, chemotherapy + trastuzumab, trastuzumab + hormonotherapy following chemotherapy, and surgery were the most important prognostic factors for OS, respectively (p < 0.001, p = 0.025, p = 0.027, p = 0.029). The general characteristics of the primary tumor are important for the prognosis and survival of patients with PMBC. Interestingly, patients who underwent primary breast tumor surgery, even those at the metastatic stage upon admission, had the longest survival.

RESUMEN

There is very little information about breast cancer characteristics, treatment choices, and survival among elderly patients. The purpose of this multicenter retrospective study was to examine the clinical, pathologic, and biologic characteristics of 620 breast cancer patients age 70 years or older. Between June 1991 and May 2012, 620 patients with breast cancer, recruited from 16 institutions, were enrolled in the retrospective study. Patients had smaller tumors at diagnosis; only 15% of patients had tumors larger than 5 cm. The number of patients who had no axillary lymph node involvement was 203 (32.7%). Ninety-three patients (15.0%) had metastatic disease at diagnosis. Patients were characterized by a higher fraction of pure lobular carcinomas (75.3%). The tumors of the elderly patients were also more frequently estrogen receptor (ER) positive (75.2%) and progesterone receptor (PR) positive (67.3%). The local and systemic therapies for breast cancer differed according to age. An association between age and overall survival has not been demonstrated in elderly patients with breast cancer. In conclusion, the biologic behavior of older patients with breast cancer differs from younger patients, and older patients receive different treatments.

RESUMEN

Tumor-associated immune system cells secrete protease and cytokines that can inhibit the immune response. In particular, T-cell effector functions could be inhibited, potentially causing an increase in parasitic infestations. Demodex species are common inhabitants of normal hair follicles. Humans are the specific host for two species Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and infestation of D. folliculorum and D. brevis in patients with cancer. In the present study, 101 patients with cancer were selected from among patients who were diagnosed and treated for cancer. The cancer patients were divided into four groups according to cancer type. Slides were examined for parasites using light microscopy at magnifications of ×40 and ×100. Infestation was defined as having at least five living parasites/cm(2) of skin. The ages of the patients with cancer ranged between 38 and 82 years, with a mean of 65.5±10.1 years. It was determined that 77 of the 101 (76.2%) cancer patients were positive for Demodex species. Infestation was positive in 18 (47.4%) of the 38 cases in the breast cancer group, 7 (29.2%) of the 24 cases in the lung cancer group, 5 (18.5%) of the 27 cases in the gastrointestinal system cancer group, and 2 (16.7%) of the 12 cases in the urogenital system cancer group. Results showed that the rate of Demodex species infestation was higher in patients with breast cancer. Thus, cancer - and particularly breast cancer - is a risk factor for Demodex species infestation.

RESUMEN

A determination of circulating tumor cell (CTC) effectiveness for prediction of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was conducted as an adjunct to standard treatment of care in breast cancer management. Between November 2008 and March 2009, 22 metastatic and 12 early stage breast carcinoma patients, admitted to Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital, were included in this prospective trial. Patients' characteristics, treatment schedules and survival data were evaluated. CTC was detected twice by CellSearch method before and 9-12 weeks after the initiation of chemotherapy. A cut-off value equal or greater than 5 cells per 7.5 ml blood sample was considered positive. All patients were female. Median ages were 48.0 (range: 29-65) and 52.5 (range: 35-66) in early stage and metastatic subgroups, respectively. CTC was positive in 3 (13.6%) patients before chemotherapy and 6 (27.3%) patients during chemotherapy in the metastatic subgroup whereas positive in only one patient in the early stage subgroup before and during chemotherapy. The median follow-up was 22.0 (range: 21-23) and 19.0 (range: 5-23) months in the early stage and metastatic groups, respectively. In the metastatic group, both median PFS and OS were significantly shorter in any time CTC positive patients compared to CTC negative patients (PFS: 4.0 vs 14.0 months, Log-Rank p=0.013; and OS: 8.0 months vs. 20.5 months, Log-Rank p<0.001). OS was affected from multiple visceral metastatic sites (p=0.055) and higher grade (p=0.044) besides CTC positivity (log rank p<0.001). Radiological response of chemotherapy was also correlated with better survival (p<0.001). As a result, CTC positivity was confirmed as a prospective marker even in a small patient population, in this single center study. Measurement of CTC by CellSearch method in metastatic breast carcinoma cases may allow indications of early risk of relapse or death with even as few as two measurements during a chemotherapy program, but this finding should be confirmed with prospective trials in larger study populations.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) is the one of the most common cancers in women. It is also a leading cause of death. Unfortunately, some patients initially present with distant metastases and are diagnosed with stage IV disease that is nearly always, by then, incurable. This retrospective analysis investigated the risk factors for stage IV BC that may underlie such late presentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 916 patients with BC who visited the medical oncology polyclinic of eight different centres in Turkeybetween December 2011 and January 2013 were analysed. RESULTS: A total of 115 patients (12.6%) presented with stage IV disease. In univariate analysis; to comparing these with patients at other stages, no statistical difference was found for median diagnosis age or age at menarche (p=0.611 and p=0.820), whereas age at menopause and age at first live birth were significant (p=0.018 and p=0.003). No difference was detected in terms of accompanying diseases, use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, smoking, alcohol consumption and the rate of family history of BC between the patients (p=0.655, p=0.389, p=0.762, p=0.813, p=0.229, p=0.737). However, screening methods were employed less often, the rate of illiteracy was higher, and the rate of other cancers was higher in patients with stage IV BC (p=0.022, p=0.022, p=0.018). No statistical difference was observed between the patients in terms of tumour histopathology, and status of oestrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, or human epidermal growth factor-2 receptor (p=0.389, p=0.326, p=0.949, p=0.326). Grade 3 tumours were more frequent in patients with stage IV disease (p<0.001). On multivariate analysis, risk factors for stage IV breast cancer at the time of presentation were found to be age at first live birth and educational level (p=0.003 and p=0.047). CONCLUSIONS: Efforts should be made to perform mammography scans, in particular, at regular intervals through national training programs for all women, particularly those with family histories of breast and other types of cancer, and to establish early diagnosis of BC long before it proceeds to stage IV. Additionally, women's education had better be upgraded. In order to make women aware of BC, national education-programmes must be organised.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate prognostic factors and response rates to various treatment approaches to patients with synovial sarcoma in an advanced setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 55 patients (18 pts; 32.7% women) diagnosed with synovial sarcomas. Twenty had metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis while the remainder of the study group consisted of patients who developed metastatic or inoperable locally advanced disease during follow up. RESULTS: The median follow up time was 15 months (range: 1-53). Regarding outcomes for the 55 patients, 3 and 5 year overall survival rates were 26% and 14%, respectively. In univariate analyses among demographic factors female gender was associated with a better outcome (p=0.030). Patients with early progressing disease (<2 years) had a worse prognosis when compared to patient group with late relapse, but this difference did not reach statistical significance (p=0.056). According to multivariate Cox regression analysis patients who had undergone metastasectomy had a significant survival advantage (p=0.044). The overall response rate to different salvage chemotherapy regimens given as second line treatment was around 42.9-53.9% for all regimes. There were no statistically significant differences between chemotherapy regimens given in either second or third line settings in terms of overall survival. CONCLUSIONS: We observed no major differences in terms of response rate and survival between different salvage chemotherapy regimens. Although metastatic disease still carries a poor prognosis, metastasectomy was found to be associated with improved survival.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: Several studies have now demonstrated that the lymph node ratio (LNR), as a superior indicator of axillary tumor burden to the number of excised nodes. While, about the prognostic value of LNR on the the survival of elderly patients is limited. The aim of this retrospective multicenter study is to evaluate the prognostic value of lymph node ratio in elderly patients with node positive breast cancer. METHODS: Onehundredeightyfour patient with operable breast cancer, recruited from 17 institutions, were enrolled into the retrospectively study. Eleven potential prognostic variables were chosen for analysis in this study. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify prognostic factors associated with survival. RESULT: Among the eleven variables of univariate analysis, four variables were identified to have prognostic significance for Overall survival (OS): pathologic tumor size (T), No. of positive nodes (N), LNR and estrogen receptor-positive (ER). Among the eleven variables of univariate analysis, two variables were identified to have prognostic significance for Disease-free survival (DFS): N and LNR. Multivariate analysis by Cox proportional hazard model showed that T, LNR and ER were considered independent prognostic factors for OS. Furthermore, LNR was considered independent prognostic factors for DFS. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the LNR was associated with the prognostic importance for DFS and OS in elderly patients who were administered adjuvant treatments.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Uterine sarcomas are a group of heterogenous and rare malignancies of the female genital tract and there is a lack of consensus on prognostic factors and optimal treatment. OBJECTIVE AND METHODOLOGY: To perform a retrospective evaluation of clinicopathological characteristics, prognostic factors and treatment outcomes of 93 patients with uterine sarcomas who were diagnosed and treated at 4 different centers from November 2000 to October 2010. RESULTS: Of the 93 patients, 58.0% had leiomyosarcomas, 26.9% malignant mixed Mullerian tumors, 9.7% endometrial stromal sarcomas, and 5.4% other histological types. According to the last International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging, 43.0% were stage I, 20.4% were stage II, 22.6% were stage III and 14.0 % were stage IV. Median relapse free survival (RFS) was 20 months (95% confidence interval (CI), 12.4-27.6 months), RFS after 1, 2, 5 years were 66.6%, 44.1%, 16.5% respectively. Median overall survival (OS) was 56 months (95% CI, 22.5-89.5 months), and OS after 1, 2, 5 years was 84.7%, 78%, 49.4% respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that age≥60 years and high grade tumor were significantly associated with poor OS and RFS; patients administered adjuvant treatment with sequential chemotherapy and radiotherapy had longer RFS time. Among patients with leiomyosarcoma, in addition to age and grade, adjuvant treatment with sequential chemotherapy and radiotherapy after surgery had significant effects on OS. CONCLUSION: Uterine sarcomas have poor progrosis even at early stages. Prognostic factors affecting OS were found to be age and grade.

RESUMEN

Metaplastic breast carcinoma (MpBC) is a rare disease entity, accounting for less than 1% of all breast carcinomas. Furthermore, it is a heterogenous disease with different subgroups, including malignant epithelial (carcinoma) and stromal (sarcoma) features. Here we evaluated, retrospectively, 14 female MpBC patients admitted to Ankara Oncology Training and Research Hospital between 2005 and 2011. Median age was 45.5 (range:16.0-76.0) and tumor size 57.5 mm (range: 20.0-80.0 mm). Histopathological subtypes were as follows: 5 carcinosarcoma, 5 squamous and 4 adenosquamous carcinoma. All but one with upfront lung metastasis, had their primary breast tumor operated. Axillary lymph nodes were involved in 64.3%. The most common sites of metastasis were lungs and brain. Chemotherapy including antracycline, taxane and even platinium was planned for adjuvant, neoadjuvant and palliative purposes in 9, 3 and 1 patient, respectively. Median cycles of chemotherapy was 6 (range:4-8). Median follow-up of the patients was 52 months (95%CI 10.4-93.6 month). Median 3 year progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in this patients cohort were 33% and 56%, respectively. In conclusion, MpBC is a rare and orphan disease without standardized treatment approaches and the prognosis is poor so that larger studies to investigate different treatment schedules are urgently needed.
