Glycosylation is a post-translational protein modification in eukaryotes and plays an important role in controlling several diseases. N-glycan structure is emerging as a new paradigm for biomarker discovery of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the relationship between N-glycosylation pattern and depression is not well elucidated to date. This study aimed to explore whether serum N-glycan structures are altered in depressive-like behavior using a stress based mouse model. We used two groups of BALB/c mice; (i) treated group exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) as a model of depression, and (ii) control group. Behavioral tests in mice (e.g., sucrose preference test, forced swimming test, and fear conditioning test) were used to evaluate the threshold level to which mice displayed a depressive-like phenotype. Serum N-glycans were analyzed carefully using glycoblotting followed by Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight/mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) to exhibit N-glycan expression levels and to illustrate the changes in the N-glycome profile. N-glycan expression levels were commonly altered in the depressive-like model and correlated well with the behavioral data. Our results indicated that sialylated N-glycan was identified as a biomarker associated with depressive symptoms, which may have utility as a candidate biomarker for the clinical diagnosis and monitoring of depression.

Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is a critical cytokine involved in inflammation-associated cancers. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) might promote carcinogenesis. In this current meta-analysis, we investigated the association of IL-17A and IL-17F gene polymorphisms with gastric cancer (GC) risk. Eligible genetic association studies were retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus database sources. Two reviewers independently assessed methodological quality and extracted data from eligible articles. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Quantitative data synthesis was conducted using comprehensive meta-analysis v2. Subgroup analysis and heterogeneity analysis were performed. Begg's funnel plot and Egger's regression tests were used to judge publication bias. In silico data analysis was executed to analyze the functional and structural impact of the SNPs. A total of 21 case-control studies for rs2275913 c.-197G > A (7660 patients and 9409 controls), 9 studies for rs3748067 c.*1249C > T (3378 patients and 4120 controls), and 14 studies for rs763780 c.482A > G (4481 patients and 5354 controls) were included. The pooled estimate revealed an association between IL-17A rs2275913 polymorphism and the risk of GC under all genetic models (A vs. G, OR 1.187, 95% CI 1.086-1.297, P < 0.001; GA vs. GG, OR 1.108, 95% CI 1.008-1.218, P = 0.033; AA vs. GG, OR 1.484, 95% CI 1.236-1.781, P < 0.001), while no evidence of association was found with IL-17A rs3748067 or IL-17F rs763780 polymorphisms. Our results showed that IL-17A promoter rs2275913 variant might represent a potential risk factor for gastric cancer susceptibility.

Cats are the only definitive hosts of Toxoplasma gondii and constitute an essential source of infection to all warm blooded animals and humans. Diagnosis of T. gondii infection in cats is fundamental for proper management and control of infection in humans and animals. In the current study, we have evaluated the diagnostic performance of tachyzoite lysate antigen (TLA) and different T. gondii recombinant antigens including surface antigen 2 (SAG2), dense granule proteins 2, 6, 7, 15 (GRA2, GRA6, GRA7, GRA15) and microneme 10 protein (MIC10) in immunoglobulin G enzyme linked-immunosorbent assay (IgG ELISA) using cat serum samples, with reference to latex agglutination test (LAT). Remarkably, TLA showed better performance than other recombinant antigens in IgG ELISAs as compared to LAT, with concordance and Kappa values of 94.27% and 0.93, respectively. Furthermore, to improve the reactivity of the recombinant antigens, we have developed IgG ELISAs using different combinations with these recombinant antigens. Strikingly, a combination of SAG2 and GRAs has relatively similar performance as TLA evidenced by concordance and Kappa values of 94.27% and 0.81, respectively. The developed ELISA with a combination of recombinant antigens can be used as a promising diagnostic tool for routine testing of T. gondii infection and mass screening in cats. The major advantages of this assay are the high sensitivity and specificity, lower cost, safer production and easiness of standardization in various laboratories worldwide.

In the current study, we compared the therapeutic effects of a non-steroidal and a steroidal anti-inflammatory drug on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-12p40 (IL-12p40), interferon gamma (IFNγ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in the blood of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves naturally infected by bronchopneumonia. Twenty-seven buffalo calves (7 ± 2-month-old, 163 ± 12 kg) reared in smallholder farms in El-Dakahlia province in Egypt were identified to have bronchopneumonia and randomly allocated into three equal groups. Ten clinically healthy buffalo calves with negative bronchoalveolar lavage results were served as negative control. Diseased calves were treated with tulathromycin alone, a combination of tulathromycin with dexamethasone (steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) or tulathromycin with flunixin meglumine (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). The results revealed significant elevations (P < 0.05) in the production of selected cytokines in all diseased calves in comparison with healthy animals. Six days post-treatment, a significant inhibition (P < 0.05) in the production of all assessed cytokines was observed in the blood of all treated calves. Interestingly, the serum concentrations of IL-1ß and IL-12p40 were returned to the normal levels in pneumonic calves treated with the combination therapy of tulathromycin and flunixin meglumine. A strong significant positive correlation (P < 0.05) was detected between clinical sum scoring and IL-12p40 and TNF-α concentrations. The obtained results indicate the selectively potent anti-inflammatory effect of flunixin meglumine on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in pneumonic buffalo calves and highlight the efficacy of flunixin meglumine in the treatment of bronchopneumonia in buffalo calves when used in combination with tulathromycin.

The apical complex of Toxoplasma gondii enables it to invade virtually all nucleated cells in warm-blooded animals, including humans, making it a parasite of global importance. Anti-T. gondii cellular defence mechanisms depend largely on interferon (IFN)-γ production by immune cells. However, the molecular mechanism of IFN-ß-mediated defence remains largely unclear. Here, mouse peritoneal macrophages and murine embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) primed with recombinant IFN-ß and IFN-γ showed different pathways of activation. Treatment of these cells with IFN-ß or IFN-γ inhibited T. gondii (type II PLK strain) growth. Priming macrophages with IFN-ß had no effect on inflammatory cytokine expression, inducible nitric oxide synthase or indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase, nor did it have an effect on their metabolites, nitric oxide and kynurenine respectively. In contrast, IFN-γ stimulation was characterized by classical macrophage activation and T. gondii elimination. IFN-ß activation recruited the immunity-related GTPase M1 (IRGM1) to the parasitophorous vacuole in the macrophages and MEFs. Anti-toxoplasma activities induced by IFN-ß were significantly reduced after IRGM1 knockdown in murine macrophages and in IRGM1-deficient MEFs. Thus, this study unravels an alternative pathway of macrophage activation by IFN-ß and provides a mechanistic explanation for the contribution of IRGM1 induced by IFN-ß to the elimination of T. gondii.

Background: Compared to the general workforce, hospital staff has a greater incidence of chronic diseases and mental health illnesses. Wellness programs have been shown to improve the health and well-being of hospital employees by reducing risk factors and promoting healthy behaviors. In the Arab World, there are no available studies on the number, nature, or impact of wellness services provided to healthcare workers. Objective: The study aims to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and components of health and wellness programs targeting hospital employees in Arab countries. It also aims to test the association of hospitals' characteristics and the challenges faced by these hospitals with the availability of such programs. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire in English and Arabic emailed to directors of Arab hospitals registered in the Arab Hospital Federation. Results: Only 39.5% of the hospitals in the Arab region have an established wellness program. No significant association was found between hospital characteristics and the availability of these wellness programs. The most provided services for hospital staff are Flu vaccine (90.7%), pre-employment medical exam (79.1%), healthy food options (65.1%), and health risk assessment (60.5%), while the least common provided services are mental health (20.9%) and stress management (23.3%). The most common challenges facing wellness services (scale: 0-10) are financial restriction (5.95), creating a culture of health (5.88), and motivating employees (5.56). Only 4.7% of hospitals provide incentives to participate in their wellness programs. Conclusion: In general, Arab hospitals lack a wellness culture, and more investment is needed in essential wellness services such as mental health, weight reduction, stress management, and smoking cessation.

The Atlantic puffin is a medium-sized seabird with black and white plumage and orange feet. It is distributed mainly along the northern Atlantic Ocean, and due, among other reasons, to human activities, it is in a threatened situation and classified as a vulnerable species according to the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In this study, we used a total of 20 carcasses of juvenile Atlantic puffins to perform MRI, as well as anatomical cross-sections. Thus, an adequate description of the head was made, providing valuable information that could be helpful as a diagnostic tool for veterinary clinicians, who increasingly treat these birds in zoos, rehabilitation centers, and even in the wild.

Toxoplasmosis, neosporosis, and Q fever are among the most important abortifacient diseases in ruminants worldwide. These diseases result in huge economic losses in livestock besides the fact that some of are of public health concern. The present study aimed to update the data about the current seroepidemiological situation of these diseases in Upper Egypt. A total of 411 blood samples were collected from small and large ruminants and serologically tested against the presence of T. gondii, N. caninum, and C. burnetii. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were performed to assess the potential risk factors associated with the exposure to these pathogens. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii was 47.9% (197/411) with an individual seropositivity of 59.4% (63/106), 58.6% (17/29), 38.8% (54/139) and 46% (63/137) in cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats, respectively. Meanwhile, 9.7% (38/411) of the examined animals were tested positive for anti-N. caninum antibodies, with an individual seropositivity of 13.2% (12/106), 34.5% (10/29), 8.6% (12/139) and 2.9% (4/137) in cattle, buffalo, sheep and goats, respectively. Furthermore, the overall prevalence of antibodies against C. burnetii was 17.3% (63/411), and exposure to this pathogen was detected in 4.7% (5/106) of cattle, 19.3% (20/129) of sheep, 29.2% (38/130) of goats but none of the examined buffalo were found to be seropositive. A total of 12.1% (50/411) of the examined animals showed co-exposure to at least two of the tested pathogens. Regarding the potential risk factors, there were statistically significant differences among species in the frequency of exposure to the three tested pathogens. Age (> 6 months) was also shown to be a significant risk factor associated with T. gondii exposure. The results obtained provided updated information about the occurrence of three of the main reproductive pathogens in Upper Egypt. The high seropositivity values found for the tested zoonotic pathogens in most of the analyzed ruminant species suggest the necessity of performing additional in-depth studies to evaluate the epidemiology of these pathogens in the study area.

Introduction: Haemonchus spp. are considered the most important strongylid nematodes with a worldwide distribution. The parasite's blood-sucking nature can lead to severe anemia in infected animals. Despite its widespread impact, there is a dearth of comprehensive data on morphological and molecular identification methods for Haemonchus spp. in sheep from Upper Egypt. To address this gap, our current study aimed to assess the prevalence of Haemonchus spp. in 400 sheep fecal samples. Methods: We employed microscopic examination and molecular techniques, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the 18S gene for precise identification. Additionally, the potential risk factors associated with the infection by the parasite in sheep were explored. Results: The study pointed out that 33.00% (132 of 400) of the examined sheep were infected with Haemonchus spp. Sheep age and seasonal variability were found to be significant factors (p < 0.05) associated with the infection. Notably, sheep under 2 years old exhibited a higher risk, with an infection rate of 43.75% (84 out of 192), than their older counterparts. Furthermore, all reported infections were exclusively observed during the cold season, constituting 58.93% (132 out of 224) of cases. By contrast, no statistically significant association (p > 0.05) was found between the sex of the examined sheep and the occurrence of haemonchosis. Employing molecular methods, we isolated and identified the parasite through PCR analysis of cultured larvae, which were then subsequently confirmed as Haemonchus contortus via phylogenetic analysis. Discussion: The study concluded that there was a relatively high occurrence of H. contortus among sheep from Upper Egypt. We recommend the implementation of stringent and effective control measures to combat the infection and safeguard livestock health.

Background: Inborn errors of metabolism are rare genetic disorders; however, these are prevalent in countries with high consanguinity rates, like Lebanon. Patients are suspected, based on a combination of clinical and biochemical features; however, the final confirmation relies on genetic testing. Using next generation sequencing, as a new genetic investigational tool, carries several challenges for the physician, the geneticist, and the families. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical, biochemical, and genetic profile of inborn errors of metabolism suspected patients, seen at a major tertiary care center in Lebanon, between 2015 and 2018. Genetic testing was performed using next generation sequencing. Genotype-phenotype correlation and diagnostic yield of each testing modality were studied. Results: Out of 211 patients genetically tested, 126 were suspected to have an inborn error of metabolism. The diagnostic yield of next generation sequencing reached 64.3%. Single gene testing was requested in 53%, whole exome sequencing in 36% and gene panels in 10%. Aminoacid disorders were mostly diagnosed followed by storage disorders, organic acidemias and mitochondrial diseases. Targeted testing was performed in 77% of aminoacid and organic acid disorders and half of suspected storage disorders. Single gene sequencing was positive in 75%, whereas whole exome sequencing diagnostic yield for complex cases, like mitochondrial disorders, reached 49%. Good clinical and biochemical correlation allowed the interpretation of variants of unknown significance and negative mutations as well as therapeutic management of most patients. Conclusion: Tailoring the choice of test modality, by next generation sequencing, to the category of suspected inborn errors of metabolism may lead to rapid diagnosis, shortcutting the cost of repeated testing. Whole exome sequencing as a first-tier investigation may be considered mainly for suspected mitochondrial diseases, whereas targeted sequencing can be offered upon suspicion of a specific enzyme deficiency. Timing and modality of gene test remain challenging, in view of the cost incurred by families.

Background: Recently, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as potential molecular biomarkers for sepsis. We aimed to profile the expression signature of three inflammation-related lncRNAs, MALAT1, ANRIL, and HHOTAIR, in the plasma of neonates with sepsis and correlate these signatures with the phenotype. Patients and Methods: This case-control study included 124 neonates with sepsis (88 survivors/36 non-survivors) admitted to the neonatal ICU and 17 healthy neonates. The relative expressions were quantified by real-time PCR and correlated to the clinic-laboratory data. Results: The three circulating lncRNAs were upregulated in the cases; the median levels were MALAT1 (median = 1.71, IQR: -0.5 to 3.27), ANRIL (median = 1.09, IQR: 0.89 to 1.30), and HOTAIR (median = 1.83, IQR: 1.44 to 2.41). Co-expression analysis showed that the three studied lncRNAs were directly correlated (all p-values <0.001). Overall and stratification by sex analyses revealed significantly higher levels of the three lncRNAs in non-survivors compared to the survivor group (all p-values <0.001). Principal component analysis showed a clear demarcation between the two study cohorts in males and females. Cohorts with upregulated ANRIL (hazard ratio; HR = 4.21, 95% CI = 1.15-10.4, p=0.030) and HOTAIR (HR = 2.49, 95% CI = 1.02-6.05, p=0.044) were at a higher risk of mortality. Conclusion: Circulatory MALAT1, ANRIL, and HOTAIR were upregulated in neonatal sepsis, and the latter two may have the potential as prognostic biomarkers for survival in neonatal sepsis.

The one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) or dromedary is an economically important domestic animal. However, infectious diseases, including those caused by vector-borne hemopathogens, frequently compromise the health and production of camels. In this study, we examined infections caused by Babesia, Theileria, Trypanosoma, and Anaplasma species in camels in Egypt. We analyzed blood DNA samples from 148 camels reared in six Egyptian governorates (Giza, Asyut, Sohag, Qena, Luxor, and the Red Sea) using pathogen-specific Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) assays. Our results indicated that 29 (19.6%), 22 (14.9%), 1 (0.7%), 2 (1.4%), 1 (0.7%), 2 (1.4%), and 28 (18.9%) of the surveyed animals were infected with Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, Babesia sp. Mymensingh, Theileria sp. Yokoyama, Theileria equi, Trypanosoma evansi, and Anaplasma marginale, respectively. We found that a total of 68 (45.9%) animals were infected with at least one of the detected hemopathogens. Sequencing analyses of PCR amplicons confirmed our diagnostic results. This study is the first to report Theileria sp. Yokoyama and Babesia sp. Mymensingh in Egypt. This is also the first report of infection with these two species in one-humped camel. In conclusion, this study found that camels in Egypt are infected with several vector-borne hemopathogens, including novel parasite species.

Apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii has three distinct clonal lineages: high, medium and low virulent strains, type I, II and III, respectively. T. gondii avoids the immune response by transforming from fast multiplying tachyzoite to slow multiplying bradyzoite, and establishing a chronic infection. In the present study, we isolated a new strain of T. gondii from cat feces in the Tokachi subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan and named it as TgCatJpObi1 (Obi1) strain. Genotyping analysis of 12 loci revealed atypical characters close to type II, genotype 4 according to ToxoDB classification. Phenotypically, Obi1 strain shows slow growth rate and the ability of spontaneous cyst formation in both human foreskin fibroblast (HFFs) and mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro without bradyzoite induction. Parasite virulence was assessed by means of mouse survival upon infection with either Obi1 or ME49 strains. Obi1 strain displayed no mortalities in comparison to type II clonal lineage, ME49 at LD50 to LD100 range (1 × 103-106 tachyzoites). Although virulence of Obi1 strain is significantly lower than that of ME49, nucleotide sequences analyses revealed that genes of virulence factors such as Gra15, Rop5, 16, 17, and 18 in Obi1 strain were 100% identical to those in the type II strain. Thus, characterization of a newly isolated strain, Obi1, is crucial to clarify the development of toxoplasmosis in both humans and animals.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Intestinal disorders represented a large proportion of abdominal emergencies in bovine practice, and their definite diagnosis was a big challenge. The study described different intestinal disorders in cattle either in the small intestine (SI) or large intestine with their sequelae and peritonitis between SI loops. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study involved healthy (n=20) and diseased (n=40) cattle with intestinal disorders. All animals were undergoing clinical examination, laboratory analyses, and ultrasonographic examination. RESULTS: Diseased cattle had monocytic leukocytosis as well as hypoproteinemia and hypoalbuminemia. The SI ileus of either proximal (n=12) or distal (n=15), intussusception (n=3), cecal, and/or colonal dilatation (n=10) were diagnosed by ultrasound and other diagnostic tools. Duodenum intussusception was imaged in cross-section as bull's eyes lesions. Animals with SI obstructions showed complete cessation (ileus with complete obstruction) or partial reduction of the peristaltic SI movement (ileus with partial obstruction), dilated duodenum (6.5-9.9 cm), and dilated jejunum and/or ileum (4.4-6.8 cm). Ultrasonography diagnosed SI ileus, due to either intestinal obstruction or peritonitis, and detected the ileus site, either proximal or distal. Cecal/colonal dilatation was detected using ultrasonography in which SI was not imaged and the peristaltic movements were completely reduced. The recorded intestinal disorders were associated with other disorders (e.g., liver cirrhosis or peritonitis). CONCLUSION: Ultrasonography played an important role in the differential diagnosis of intestinal disorders in cattle. Peritonitis between SI loops and cecal and/or colonal dilatation was also diagnosed.

In this study, we have investigated the impact of vitamin C on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin 1 ß (IL-1 ß), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 12p40 (IL-12p40), interferon gamma (IFNγ), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)) in lambs naturally infected by pneumonic pasteurellosis. Of 37 lambs, 18 lambs were identified to have pneumonic pasteurellosis and randomly allocated into two equal groups. Single subcutaneous dose of tulathromycine alone (2.5 mg kg-1) or tulathromycine combined with vitamin C (3 gm kg-1) were administrated to the diseased lambs. The serum levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α were returned to the normal levels in pneumonic lambs treated with the combination therapy. The obtained results indicate the selective influences of vitamin C on pro-inflammatory cytokines production in sera of lambs with pneumonic pasteurellosis and highlights the value of vitamin C as a potential anti-inflammatory drug and ideal immunomodulatory agent.

Toxoplasma gondii is associated with physiological and psychiatric perturbations. The immune response is interrelated to the progress of anhedonia and despair symptoms of T. gondii-infected subjects. We recently reported that serum N-glycans were altered in mice displayed depressive-like behaviors. However, a novel biomarker that correlated to T. gondii infection and associated behaviors is demanded. Glycomics has been used to find affected glycoproteins during depression. The objective of this study is to investigate serum N-glycomics changes during infection with T. gondii in BALB/c mice, immunocompetent, or in severe combined immunodeficient mice, and after treatment with an immunostimulant; 1-methyl tryptophan. Glycans were examined through glycoblotting-protocol then investigated by MALDI-TOF/MS. Both depressive and sickness-related behaviors were significantly abundant (P ≤ 0.001 each), during acute T. gondii in immunocompetent mice, compared to controls. Only sickness symptoms were evident in immunodeficient mice infected with T. gondii, as associated with high expression level (P ≤ 0.001) of Peak # 15 (2 × Neu5Gc) compared to controls. The alteration of sialylated N-glycan expressions is important to detect the immune status of animals/humans against T. gondii. Moreover, 1-methyl tryptophan reduced depressive-like behavior (P ≤ 0.001) compared to controls. Therefore, sialylated N-glycan (Neu5Ac/Neu5Gc-terminal) is targeted to be used as a novel biomarker of sickness/depressive-like behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a multisystemic disease involving the homeostasis of insulin secretion by the pancreatic islet beta cells (ß-cells). It is associated with hypertension, renal disease, and arterial and arteriolar vascular diseases. DISCUSSION: The classification of diabetes is identified as type 1 (gene linked ß-cell destruction in childhood) and type 2 (late onset associated with ß-cell overload and insulin resistance in peripheral tissues. Type 1 diabetes is characterized by insulin deficiency, type 2 diabetes by both insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. The former is a genetically programmed loss of insulin secretion whereas the latter constitutes a disruption of the homeostatic relationship between the opposing activity of ß- cell insulin and alpha cell (α-cell) glucagon of the Islets of Langerhans. The condition could also occur in pregnancy, as a prenatal occurring event, possibly triggered by the hormonal changes of pregnancy combined with ß-cell overload. This review discusses the molecular basis of the biomolecular changes that occur with respect to glucose homeostasis and related diseases in DM. The underlying link between pancreatic, renal, and microvascular diseases in DM is based on oxidative stress and the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR). CONCLUSION: Studying proteome changes in diabetes can deepen our understanding of the biomolecular basis of disease and help us acquire more efficient therapies.

The present study investigated the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and other intestinal parasites in cats in the Tokachi subprefecture in Japan. A total of 365 household cats were included in the study, and 353 serum and 351 fecal samples were collected and analyzed. T. gondii IgG antibodies were detected in the sera of 16.14% of cats based on Latex agglutination test and ELISA. For ELISA, T. gondii RH strain tachyzoites lysate and T. gondii SAG2 recombinant protein were used as antigens. Low seropositivity was detected in cats younger than one year and older than 11 years; outdoor and hunter cats showed significantly high seropositivities. Neutering either in male or female cats, but not gender, had a considerable effect on seroprevalence. Toxoplasma gondii oocysts were detected in one fecal sample. The overall parasitic infestation in cats was 12.5%. Other detected parasites included Toxocara species, which showed the highest prevalence of 7.7%, followed by Isospora spp. (2%), Taenia spp. (1.7%), and Ancylostoma spp. (0.9%). Spirometra spp. was detected in only one sample. Outdoor cats comprised 50% of all 44 parasite-infested cats. Although T. gondii oocysts were detected in only one sample, the relatively high seroprevalence of T. gondii indicated that it can pose significant risks to the environment. Our findings highlighted the potential of outdoor cats as a source of T. gondii and other parasites.

Considering the long lifespan of the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, human mobility from prevalent regions to other neighboring areas has the possibility to disperse carriers and complicate the opisthorchiasis problem. To evaluate this, mass screening of the fluke infection was conducted in nine communities of lower Northern Thailand, combined with a questionnaire survey to distinguish the participant's origin. The liver fluke infection was found in 70 individuals (7.2%) of the examined 971 stool samples from seven communities, with light intensity providing small numbers of eggs in the examined stool. Prevalence in the positive communities varied from 2.1% to 28.7%. As a result of generalized linear mixed models fitting, regional origin and raw-fish eating habits were stably selected as variables affecting the parasite infection while occupation and educational background were secondary ones. Majority of the infected cases (64.3%) were found from the immigrants of northeastern Thailand (the fluke prevalent region), providing 2.28-2.42 times higher infectious risk on average against the local residents. Daily consumption of raw fish averaged a 3.12-3.60 times higher risk compared to those with no raw-fish eating habit. Our findings suggest that people's origin and moving history deserve further attentions in health promotion programs including education for safe eating.

This study describes ultrasonographic observations of five hepatobiliary diseases in buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). Fifty buffalo, including 20 clinically normal and 30 hepatobiliary diseased buffalo were enrolled in the study. Complete clinical, radiographic and ultrasonographic examinations and laboratory analyses were conducted. Focal parenchymal lesions including liver abscess (n = 12) and hepatic cyst (n = 6), diffuse parenchymal lesion (hepatobiliary cirrhosis, n = 5) and obstruction of hepatobiliary passages including cholestasis (n = 4), and hepatocholelithiasis (n = 3) were successfully imaged by ultrasonography. Hepatic abscess imaged as a hypoechoic to echogenic circumscribed mass of various diameters with a distinct echogenic capsule. Hepatic cyst imaged as a pear-shaped sac with a bright echogenic margin, anechoic content, and distal acoustic enhancement. In hepatobiliary fibrosis, the liver showed linear bands of increasing echogenicity with less distinct imaging of the portal vasculature. Cholestasis was imaged as dilatation of the gallbladder (GB) with wall thickening and homogeneous or heterogeneous contents. Hepatocholelithiasis imaged as an echoic structure within the hepatic parenchyma, or within and around the GB and bile duct, with more echogenicity of the hepatic parenchyma than normal. Ultrasonography can be an efficient rapid, noninvasive tool for screening of common hepatobiliary diseases in buffalo under field conditions.
