RESUMEN

Previous investigators have reported deficits in taste acuity in patients following radiation therapy for oropharyngeal cancer. In the present longitudinal study, 13 patients (mean age = 51.6 yrs) received conventional or hyperfractionated radiotherapy (63-76.8 Gy) for primary tumors of the oropharynx. One or both parotid glands and at least two-thirds of the tongue were included in the radiation field. Smell recognition and taste detection thresholds were determined at baseline, 1 month, 6 months, and 1 year post-radiation. Differences for smell recognition and the 4 taste qualities were assessed (independently) at the 4 time intervals, with a one-way ANOVA. Smell recognition was unaffected by radiation. There were significant elevations in thresholds for sweet (p < 0.005), salty (p < 0.005), bitter (p < 0.005), and sour (p< 0.001) during radiation therapy that were restored to baseline levels at 6 months and 1 year after radiation. This study demonstrated that radiation-induced taste deficits can be recovered by 6 months.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess changes in salivary epidermal growth factor (EGF) in patients receiving radiation therapy to the head and neck and to determine whether salivary EGF levels correlate with the severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis. STUDY DESIGN: Thirteen patients and 18 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Saliva was collected before, during (weekly), and after radiation therapy. Salivary total protein (TP) and EGF concentrations were measured and correlated with the severity of oral mucositis. The variability in normalized EGF (ngEGF/mgTP) values and mucositis scores were analyzed with analysis of covariance, and the adjusted correlation coefficient was calculated. RESULTS: EGF levels decreased (P =.004), whereas TP levels increased over time (P =.039). A strong correlation was seen with decreasing normalized EGF values and more severe mucositis (P =. 0001). CONCLUSION: A strong negative correlation between normalized EGF and mucositis severity suggests a possible role for EGF in the progression of radiation-induced mucosal breakdown.

RESUMEN

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was administered to 256 dental students, representing four classes, at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. The results of this psychological instrument were then correlated with overall dental school performance based on results from the National Dental Board Examinations Part I and II (NB-I, NB-II), yearly class rank, and specific academic difficulties as measured by the Student Performance Evaluation Committee. Introverted students were found to display a significantly increased performance on NB-I (p = .038) and NB-II (p = .044). They were also found, however, to demonstrate a progressively lower class rank over the four-year period than extroverted students and were more likely to experience major academic difficulties as well. Judging and sensing individuals were found to earn a higher class rank over the four-year period than perceiving and intuitive students, respectively. Perceiving students were found to exhibit major difficulties or were placed on probation more often than judging individuals. These results may prove useful in counseling students to recognize potential problems before they commence their dental education or to anticipate and address specific weaknesses during the course of their education.

RESUMEN

The Cytobrush Plus cell collector (cytobrush) was compared with the wooden tongue depressor during oral exfoliative cytology. The degree of patient discomfort, the convenience to the clinician, and the quantity and distribution of epithelial cells collected were evaluated. Two-factor analysis of variance and parametric and nonparametric analyses were performed. Because of the favorable findings revealed in this study, we recommend that the cytobrush be considered for use when obtaining diagnostic cytologic smears from the oral mucosa.
