RESUMEN

This research investigated the sustainability of textile garments with integrated electronics and their potential impact on the environment. The electronic textiles (E-textiles) sector is booming, with many advancements in E-textile product designs and construction methods having been made in recent years. Although there is a rapidly increasing interest in the reusability and sustainability of textiles, work towards E-textile sustainability requires further attention. Vastly different components are combined when constructing an electronic textile product, which makes it challenging at the end of the life of these products to dispose of them in a responsible way. In this study, a teardown analysis was conducted using a structured method, which first mapped out the interactions between each component of the product with the environment, followed by using Kuusk's sustainable framework to analyze sustainable strategies. The research provides a unique contribution to transitioning sustainability theories into practical applications in the area of E-textiles, and the method proposed in this work can be employed in modifying electronics-embedded textiles to improve longevity and reduce the negative environmental impact. The work has highlighted key points of improvement that could be applied to a series of commercial E-textile garments, as well as a prototype E-textile device. Beyond this, the work provides a systematic approach for implementing new E-textile product designs that can evaluate overall product sustainability from the design stage to material selection, construction, and the planning of the commercial approaches of a product.

The aim of the publication is to report the accuracy, repeatability and the linearity of three commercially available interface pressure measurement systems employed in the treatment of venous disease. The advances in the treatment and management of chronic venous disease by compression therapy have led to considerable research interest in interface pressure measurement systems capable of measuring low-pressure ranges (10-60 mmHg). The application of a graduated pressure profile is key for the treatment of chronic venous disease which is achieved by using compression bandages or stockings; the required pressure profiles are defined in standards (BSI, RAL-GZ, or AFNOR) for different conditions. However, achieving the recommended pressure levels and its accuracy is still deemed to be a challenge. Thus, it is vital to choose a suitable pressure measurement system with high accuracy of interface pressure. The authors investigated the sensing performance of three commercially available different pressure sensors: two pneumatic based (AMI and PicoPress®) and one piezoresistive (FlexiForce®) pressure sensors, with extensive experimental work on their performance in terms of linearity, repeatability, and accuracy. Both pneumatic based pressure measurement systems have shown higher accuracy in comparison to the flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors.

RESUMEN

A method of providing localised haptic feedback at precise locations on the body, utilising a lightweight textile garment is presented in this short paper. The textile comprises of subtly integrated actuator yarns (HaptiYarns) which are controlled by electropneumatic circuitry. Each yarn has two functional layers, an inner porous textile layer with limited extensibility and a second, durable outer layer made from an extensible elastomer. The HaptiYarns can provide radial forces and a maximum radial displacement of 28.09 ± 0.14 mm. It was found that the intrinsic addition of graphite powder (5% by weight), during elastomer preparation, offered better resistance to layer delamination and increased the ability of the yarn to withstand higher internal air pressures by 48%. Both the graphite-filled composite and the graphite free yarns demonstrated high durability, withstanding cyclic testing of >7500 cycles while having no significant impact on the force feedback. Finally, a wearable prototype knitted textile garment is presented with eight HaptiYarns subtly integrated within it and connected to a virtual reality (VR) program providing an immersive haptic experience. These yarns offer the potential to transform everyday clothing into wearable haptic devices with potential to revolutionise healthcare, VR-based training, gaming, and entertainment sectors.

Introduction: Leakage of orogastric secretions past the cuff of a tracheal tube is a contributory factor in ventilator-associated pneumonia. Current bench test methods specified in the International Standard for Anaesthetic and Respiratory Equipment (EN ISO 5361:2023) to test cuff leakage involve using a glass or plastic rigid cylinder model of the trachea. There is a need for more realistic models to inform cuff leakage. Methods: We used human computerised tomography data and additive manufacturing (3D printing), combined with casting techniques to fabricate a bio-inspired synthetic tracheal model with analogous tissue characteristics. We conducted cuff leakage tests according to EN ISO 5361:2023 and compared results for high-volume low-pressure polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane cuffs between the rigid cylinder trachea with our bio-inspired model. Results: The tracheal model demonstrated close agreement with published tracheal tissue hardness for cartilaginous and membranous soft tissues. For high-volume low-pressure polyvinyl chloride cuffs the leakage rate was >50% lower in the bio-inspired tracheal model compared with the rigid cylinder model (151 [8] vs 261 [11] ml h-1). For high-volume low-pressure polyurethane cuffs, much lower leakage rates were observed than polyvinyl chloride cuffs in both models with leakage rates higher for the bio-inspired trachea model (0.1 [0.2] vs 0 [0] ml h-1). Conclusion: A reproducible tracheal model that incorporates the mechanical properties of the human trachea can be manufactured from segmented CT images and additive manufactured moulds, providing a useful tool to inform future cuff development, leakage testing for industrial applications, and clinical decision-making. There are differences between cuff leakage rates between the bio-inspired model and the rigid cylinder recommended in EN ISO 5361:2023. The bio-inspired model could lead to more accurate and realistic cuff leakage rate testing which would support manufacturers in refining their designs. Clinicians would then be able to choose better tracheal tubes based on the outcomes of this testing.

Over the past few years, alternative power supplies to either supplement or replace batteries for electronic textile and wearable applications have been sought, with the development of wearable solar energy harvesting systems gaining significant interest. In a previous publication the authors reported a novel concept to craft a yarn capable of harvesting solar energy by embedding miniature solar cells within the fibers of a yarn (solar electronic yarns). The aim of this publication is to report the development of a large-area textile solar panel. This study first characterized the solar electronic yarns, and then analyzed the solar electronic yarns once woven into double cloth woven textiles; as part of this study, the effect of different numbers of covering warp yarns on the performance of the embedded solar cells was explored. Finally, a larger woven textile solar panel (510 mm × 270 mm) was constructed and tested under different light intensities. It was observed that a PMAX = 335.3 ± 22.4 mW of energy could be harvested on a sunny day (under 99,000 lux lighting conditions).

OBJECTIVES: Oncology surgeons use animals and cadavers in training because of a lack of alternatives. The aim of this work was to develop a design methodology to create synthetic liver models familiar to surgeons, and to help plan, teach and rehearse patient-specific cancerous liver resection surgery. DESIGN: Synthetic gels were selected and processed to recreate accurate anthropomorphic qualities. Organic and synthetic materials were mechanically tested with the same equipment and standards to determine physical properties like hardness, elastic modulus and viscoelasticity. Collected data were compared with published data on the human liver. Patient-specific CT data were segmented and reconstructed and additive manufactured models were made of the liver vasculature, parenchyma and lesion. Using toolmaking and dissolvable scaffolds, models were transformed into tactile duplicates that could mimic liver tissue behaviour. RESULTS: Porcine liver tissue hardness was found to be 23 H00 (±0.1) and synthetic liver was 10 H00 (±2.3), while human parenchyma was reported as 15.06 H00 (±2.64). Average elastic Young's modulus of human liver was reported as 0.012 MPa, and synthetic liver was 0.012 MPa, but warmed porcine parenchyma was 0.28 MPa. The final liver model demonstrated a time-dependant viscoelastic response to cyclic loading. CONCLUSION: Synthetic liver was better than porcine liver at recreating the mechanical properties of living human liver. Warmed porcine liver was more brittle, less extensible and stiffer than both human and synthetic tissues. Qualitative surgical assessment of the model by a consultant liver surgeon showed vasculature was explorable and that bimanual palpation, organ delivery, transposition and organ slumping were analogous to human liver behaviour.

Electronically active yarn (E-yarn) pioneered by the Advanced Textiles Research Group of Nottingham Trent University contains a fine conductive copper wire soldered onto a package die, micro-electro-mechanical systems device or flexible circuit. The die or circuit is then held within a protective polymer packaging (micro-pod) and the ensemble is inserted into a textile sheath, forming a flexible yarn with electronic functionality such as sensing or illumination. It is vital to be able to wash E-yarns, so that the textiles into which they are incorporated can be treated as normal consumer products. The wash durability of E-yarns is summarized in this publication. Wash tests followed a modified version of BS EN ISO 6330:2012 procedure 4N. It was observed that E-yarns containing only a fine multi-strand copper wire survived 25 cycles of machine washing and line drying; and between 5 and 15 cycles of machine washing followed by tumble-drying. Four out of five temperature sensing E-yarns (crafted with thermistors) and single pairs of LEDs within E-yarns functioned correctly after 25 cycles of machine washing and line drying. E-yarns that required larger micro-pods (i.e., 4 mm diameter or 9 mm length) were less resilient to washing. Only one out of five acoustic sensing E-yarns (4 mm diameter micro-pod) operated correctly after 20 cycles of washing with either line drying or tumble-drying. Creating an E-yarn with an embedded flexible circuit populated with components also required a relatively large micro-pod (diameter 0.93 mm, length 9.23 mm). Only one embedded circuit functioned after 25 cycles of washing and line drying. The tests showed that E-yarns are suitable for inclusion in textiles that require washing, with some limitations when larger micro-pods were used. Reduction in the circuit's size and therefore the size of the micro-pod, may increase wash resilience.

Silicone-based elastomers saturated with embedded, short-strand fibres are used for their ability to mimic the aesthetic qualities of skin in clinical and theatrical maxillofacial appliance design. Well-known to prostheses fabricators and technicians, the mechanical impact of fibre addition on elastomeric behaviour endures as tacit, embodied knowledge of the craft, almost unknown in the literature. To examine mechanical changes caused by fibre addition, 100 modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomeric compounds containing incremental amounts of loose polyester fibres were prepared and examined in a variety of mechanical tests. It was found that elasticity and strain percentage at breaking point was reduced by increasing fibre content, but Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased. As fibre content was increased, strain hardening was seen at low strain rates, but exaggerated plastic deformation at high strain rates. PDMS hardness increased by 5 degrees of hardness (Shore-00 scale) for every additional percentage of fibres added and a strong positive linear coefficient (0.993 and 0.995) was identified to reach the hardness values given in the literature for living human skin. The apparent reorienting of loose fibres in the PDMS interrupts and absorbs stress during the loading process similar to the organic response to soft tissue loading, except in extension.

Tissues of the auditory, ocular and reproductive systems have some similarities in their protein families and structures. Consequently, syndromes comprising these systems are described. Hearing loss alone is a component of more than 400 known syndromes and is a common nonsyndromic congenital disorder. Here we describe a syndrome in five brothers with the distinctive presentation of late-onset progressive hearing loss, cataracts, retinitis pigmentosa, sperm motility and shape problems in a family from the Kurdish population in Iran. The clinical findings of these patients are presented in detail and compared to the classical Usher syndromes.
