RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Previous research linked problematic mobile social media use to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, little research explored the underlying mechanism. Drawing on the social displacement hypothesis, which suggests that excessive social media use may disrupt offline social interactions, leading to negative emotional experiences, the study employs a longitudinal design to explore the relationship between problematic mobile social media use and NSSI, with a specific emphasis on the mediating role of self-disgust. METHODS: A total of 1,684 Chinese adolescents (52.3% females; Mage = 14.59 years, SDage = 1.27) completed self-report questionnaires regarding problematic mobile social media use, self-disgust, and NSSI. The assessment was conducted in three waves, 6 months apart. RESULTS: Using latent growth curve and structural equation modeling, our study observed a consistent linear decline in NSSI levels over time. Higher initial NSSI levels correlated with a slower reduction. Problematic mobile social media use positively influenced the initial level of NSSI. Additionally, self-disgust played a mediating role in the relationship between problematic mobile social media use and NSSI. CONCLUSIONS: The study underscores the importance of understanding the emotional experiences behind social media use, beyond mere usage duration. By revealing the mediating role of self-disgust, it provides new insights into the complex interplay between problematic mobile social media use and adolescent NSSI.

RESUMEN

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and negative body image are both highly prevalent among adolescents, and there are theoretically proposed reciprocal associations between them. However, previous research has not differentiated between stable personal traits and time-varying state levels when examining these associations, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To address these gaps, this study investigated the longitudinal associations between negative body image, self-disgust, and NSSI among Chinese adolescents, disentangling the between- and within-person effects by employing random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs). A total of 515 Chinese adolescents (50.7% boys; baseline Mage = 12.34 years, SD = 0.47) participated in a four-wave longitudinal study with 6-month intervals. The results indicated that, at the between-person level, higher levels of self-disgust were associated with more NSSI and more concerns about general appearance, facial appearance, shortness, and fatness, but were not associated with concerns about thinness. At the within-person level, general appearance concern and NSSI positively predicted each other over time through self-disgust. Concerns about facial appearance, shortness, and fatness all positively predicted self-disgust, which in turn positively predicted NSSI over time, but not vice versa. These findings highlight the stable and trait-like associations between self-disgust, NSSI, and most negative body image dimensions. Self-disgust is worth considering as a target for intervention, as it plays a mediating role in the long-term associations between negative body image and NSSI.

RESUMEN

With the widespread use of azole antifungals in the clinic, the drug resistance has been emerging continuously. In this work, we have designed and prepared a series of novel indole and indoline derivatives, and in vitro antifungal activity against C. albicans were evaluated. The results showed that title compounds exhibited good antifungal effect on Azole-resistant C. albicans. Further mechanism study demonstrated that S18 could inhibit the biofilm formation and hyphae growth of C. albicans through the Ras-cAMP-PKA signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

With the widespread use of azole antifungals in the clinic, the drug resistance has been emerging continuously. In this work, we focus on boron trifluoride etherate catalyzed condensation of indole and salicylaldehydes to form bis(indolyl)methanes (BIMs) in high yields, and in vitro antifungal activity against Candida albicans were evaluated. The results showed that most phenol-derived BIMs combined with fluconazole (FLC) exhibited good antifungal activity against sensitive and drug-resistant C. albicans. Further mechanism study demonstrated that BI-10 combined with FLC could inhibit hyphal growth, result in ROS accumulation, and decrease mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) as well as altering membrane permeability.

RESUMEN

Research has demonstrated robust links between adolescent stress and serious psychological problems. The current study aimed to identify latent stress profiles of 1510 adolescents (59.7% females; Mage  = 16.77 years, SD = 0.86) based on five stresses (parental stresses, family environment stresses, academic stresses, teacher stresses, and peer stresses) at three time points (T1/2/3). Moreover, this study would investigate the transition patterns of these profiles over time and examine the associations between the profiles and adverse psychological symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression, nonsuicidal self-injury [NSSI], and suicidal ideation). Three latent stress profiles were identified, including High-stress profile, Medium-stress profile, and Low-stress profile. The three profiles were significantly different on the levels of T1/2/3 anxiety, depression, NSSI, and suicidal ideation. The profile memberships remained relatively stable across three time points. Notably, the present study found gender differences, with boys were more likely to be in the High-stress profile and to transition from the Medium- to the High-stress profile, compared to girls. Furthermore, left-behind adolescents were more likely to be in the High-stress profile than non-left-behind adolescents. The findings highlight the importance of adopting 'this-approach-fits-this-profile' interventions for adolescents. Parents and teachers are advised to adopt different strategies for girls and boys.

RESUMEN

Based on previous theories and studies, fear of negative evaluation (FNE) may be a key predictor of suicidal ideation in adolescents. However, few studies examined the longitudinal relationships between FNE and suicidal ideation. This study aimed to explore the bidirectional longitudinal relationships between FNE and suicidal ideation. Meanwhile, based on the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, this study would examine the longitudinal mediating role of interpersonal needs factors (thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness) on the relationship between FNE and suicidal ideation. A sample of 515 adolescents (Mage = 12.309, SD = 0.807; 49.3 % girls) completed questionnaires on 4 waves, 6 months apart. The Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models (RI-CLPMs) were utilized to estimate the associations among study variables. The results showed that: (1) there was a significant bidirectional longitudinal relationship between FNE and suicidal ideation; (2) thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness independently and serially mediated the relationship between FNE and suicidal ideation. This study contributed to understanding the complex relationship between FNE and suicidal ideation, emphasizing the critical roles of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness. The findings underscore the bidirectional nature of these associations and provide insights into the potential pathways involved in the development of suicidal ideation among adolescents.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are crucial public health issues, yet their co-developmental trajectories during early adolescence and their associations with predictors and outcomes are unclear. This study aimed to (a) identify heterogeneous co-developmental trajectories of SI and NSSI, (b) explore associations between transdiagnostic predictors and trajectories, and (c) assess suicide attempt risk across trajectories. METHODS: Four hundred fifty-three adolescents (Mage = 12.35 years, 48.3% boys) completed surveys at 6-month intervals across 2 years. At Time 1 (Nov 2020), participants completed surveys encompassing SI, and NSSI, along with family, peer, and individual predictors. Subsequent surveys (Times 2-4) measured SI and NSSI, with suicide attempts queried at Time 4. RESULTS: Parallel process latent class growth models revealed three co-developmental groups (i.e., Stable low NSSI and SI; Moderate-NSSI and high-SI, parallel decreasing; High-NSSI and moderate-SI, parallel increasing). Multivariate logistic regression indicated that group membership was predicted by parental rejection, parental warmth, bullying victimization, depressive and anxiety symptoms, thwarted belongingness, and perceived burdensomeness. Adolescents in the "High-NSSI and moderate-SI, parallel increasing" group reported the highest suicide attempt frequency. CONCLUSION: These findings underscore subgroup distinctions and transdiagnostic predictors in comprehending SI and NSSI progression, emphasizing the necessity of dynamic monitoring and tailored interventions for distinct subgroup characteristics.

RESUMEN

Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen associated with human opportunistic infections. Invasive infections caused by C. albicans are becoming increasingly serious. However, with the rising incidence of fungal infection, many fungi are resistant to commonly used drugs. Therefore, there is an urgent need for exploring new anti-fungal drugs that fungi are not resistant to. A series of novel azole derivatives linked to indole/indoline moieties were prepared, and in vitro antifungal activity evaluated. All compounds combined with FLC showed excellent activity against drug-resistant C. albicans with low toxicity. A preliminary mechanistic study indicated that S1 combined with FLC could inhibit the formation of C. albicans biofilms as well as destroy the integrity of cell-membrane structure and mitochondrial function. S1 could be considered a new fungal agent for further study.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), a significant predictor of suicide, is more frequent in sexual minorities (e.g., lesbian, gay, and bisexual) than in heterosexuals. The Minority Stress Model proposed that sexual minority stigma (SMS) may lead to maladaptive behaviors, including NSSI. However, the potential mechanism underlying the relationship between SMS and NSSI remains unclear. Therefore, the current study will examine the relationship between SMS and NSSI, and explore the serial mediating roles of sexual orientation concealment (SOC), self-criticism, and depression. Methods: A total of 666 individuals who self-identified as sexual minorities (64.0% male, M age = 24.49 years, SD = 6.50) completed questionnaires of SMS, SOC, self-criticism, depression, and NSSI, in 2020. Results: The findings indicated that (1) SMS, SOC, self-criticism, depression, and NSSI were positively correlated; (2) SOC, self-criticism, and depression independently played partial mediating roles between SMS and NSSI; and (3) SOC, self-criticism, and depression played serial mediating roles between SMS and NSSI. Conclusions: The current study supported the relation between SMS and NSSI among Chinese sexual minorities, and also implied a potential mechanism underlying the relation. Specifically, SMS was related to increased NSSI by higher SOC, self-criticism, and depression. SOC had dual-edged effects on NSSI. Policy Implications: To reduce NSSI and other psychological problems among sexual minorities, policy makers should take more measures to eliminate SMS. Specifically, policy makers are encouraged to provide more support for changing sexual minorities' living environment, such as repealing bills that could cause SMS and popularizing the knowledge about sexual orientation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the occupational identity of primary health technicians in Qiqihar City and to analyze its influencing factors. METHODS: From September 2020 to October 2020, 436 primary health technicians were selected from the primary health centers in Qiqihar City using the convenience sampling method. After eight invalid questionnaires were excluded, the total number cases was 428. The questionnaires were used to conduct surveys and perform a data analysis. RESULTS: In Qiqihar City, the primary health technicians are densely distributed among community hospitals, township hospitals, and village clinics. The personnel include general practitioners, specialists, medical technicians, Chinese medicine practitioners, and nurses. The occupational identity of the basic-level health technicians in Qiqihar is at a medium level. The total job stressor scores among the primary health technical personnel in Qiqihar City and the total satisfaction scores are at the moderate level. The scores and total scores of each dimension of the job stressor scale were negatively correlated with the occupational identity scores (P<0.01). The scores and total scores of each dimension on the satisfaction scale demonstrated a positive correlation with the total professional identity scores (P<0.01). A very notable difference was found in the ages and years of work experience in the occupational identity scores in our univariate analysis (P<0.05). Our multiple linear regression analysis revealed that years of work experience, work pressure, and job satisfaction are the influencing factors of the status quo of the occupational identity of the basic-level health technicians (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Years of work experience, work pressure, and the job satisfaction of primary health technicians are the influencing factors of their professional identity. Thus, strengthening humanistic care and communication, alleviating the psychological pressure of basic-level health technicians, rationalizing the work tasks, and providing more training and learning opportunities remain urgent tasks for boosting the professional identity of basic-level health technicians.
