BACKGROUND: In breast diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), distortion and physiologic artifacts affect clinical interpretation. Image quality can be optimized by addressing the effect of phase encoding (PE) direction on these artifacts. PURPOSE: To compare distortion artifacts in breast DWI acquired with different PE directions and polarities, and to discuss their clinical implications. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. POPULATION: Eleven healthy volunteers (median age: 47 years old; range: 22-74 years old) and a breast phantom. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: Single-shot echo planar DWI and three-dimensional fast gradient echo sequences at 3 T. ASSESSMENT: All DWI data were acquired with left-right, right-left, posterior-anterior, and anterior-posterior PE directions. In phantom data, displacement magnitude was evaluated by comparing the location of landmarks in anatomical and DWI images. Three breast radiologists (5, 17, and 23 years of experience) assessed the presence or absence of physiologic artifacts in volunteers' DWI datasets and indicated their PE-direction preference. STATISTICAL TESTS: Analysis of variance with post-hoc tests were used to assess differences in displacement magnitude across DWI datasets and observers. A binomial test and a chi-squared test were used to evaluate if each in vivo DWI dataset had an equal probability (25%) of being preferred by radiologists. Inter-reader agreement was evaluated using Gwet's AC1 agreement coefficient. A P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In the phantom study, median displacement was the significantly largest in posterior-anterior data. While the displacement in the anterior-posterior and left-right data were equivalent (P = 0.545). In the in vivo data, there were no physiological artifacts observed in any dataset, regardless of PE direction. In the reader study, there was a significant preference for the posterior-anterior datasets which were selected 94% of the time. There was good agreement between readers (0.936). DATA CONCLUSION: This study showed the impact of PE direction on distortion artifacts in breast DWI. In healthy volunteers, the posterior-to-anterior PE direction was preferred by readers. Background: The purpose of this study was to explore the usage patterns and profiles of social media (SM) platforms among Radiation Oncologists (RO) and Physicists in the scope of the Catalan-Occitan Oncology Group (GOCO). Materials and methods: From November 2022 to March 2023, a comprehensive survey was sent to Radiation Oncology professionals within the GOCO group, comprising 31 questions that covered demographics (4) and general inquiries (9), user behavior on social media (7), profile of SM activity (7), and participants' opinions (4) regarding professional use of SM. The survey reached professionals from 12 centers, encompassing 10 in Catalonia and 2 in French Occitania. Results: The survey achieved a 61.37% response rate (178/290 professionals) with an average age of 41.9 years. 120 (67%) were ROs, and 58 (33%) were Physicists. Instagram led in usage (n = 116), followed by Facebook (n = 107) and Twitter (n = 77). Age correlated inversely with the number of platforms used (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient -0.238, p = 0.001). 28% (n = 42) changed clinical practices based on SM information. A 78.5% (n = 117) didn't counter inappropriate content. Most (71.7%, n = 109) spent < 1 hour daily on professional SM use, however more Physicians exceeded 2 hours compared to Physicists (Cohen's kappa 2 = 0.07). 41.8% (n = 64) weren't emotionally concerned while 22.9% (n = 35) felt overwhelmed by SM overload. Conclusions: The study offers valuable insights into the usage patterns, preferences, and attitudes of Radiation Oncology professionals towards SM platforms. This understanding is crucial for optimizing content quality and delivering relevant information, thereby enabling more effective marketing strategies and enhancing emotional management among these professionals.

Metabarcoding techniques have revolutionized ecological research in recent years, facilitating the differentiation of cryptic species and revealing previously hidden diversity. In the current scenario of climate change and ocean acidification, biodiversity loss is one of the main threats to marine ecosystems. Here, we explored the effects of ocean acidification on marine benthic communities using DNA metabarcoding to assess the diversity of algae and metazoans. Specifically, we examined the natural pH gradient generated by the Fuencaliente CO2 vent system, located near La Palma Island (Canary Islands). High-resolution COI metabarcoding analyses revealed high levels of taxonomic diversity in an acidified natural area for the first time. This high number of species arises from the detection of small and cryptic species that were previously undetectable by other techniques. Such species are apparently tolerant to the acidification levels expected in future oceans. Hence and following our results, future subtropical communities are expected to keep high biodiversity values under an acidification scenario, although they will tend toward overall miniaturization due to the dominance of small algal and invertebrate species, leading to changes in ecosystem functions.

BACKGROUND: To date, the accuracy and variability of diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) metrics have been reported in a limited number of scanner/protocol/coil combinations. PURPOSE: To evaluate the reproducibility of DW-MRI estimates across multiple scanners and DW-MRI protocols and to assess the effects of using an 8-channel vs. 16-channel breast coil in a breast phantom. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. PHANTOM: Breast phantom containing tubes of water and differing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) concentrations with apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) matching breast tissue. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3 T (three standard and one wide bore), three DW-MRI single-shot echo planar imaging protocols of varying acquired spatial resolution. ASSESSMENT: Accuracy of estimated ADCs was assessed using percent differences (PD) relative to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy-derived reference values. Coefficients of variation (CV) were calculated to determine variation across scanners. CVs based on the median standard deviation (CVM ) were used to evaluate tube-specific dispersion using 8- or 16-channel coils at a single scanner. ADCs of PVP-containing tubes were additionally normalized by the median water tube ADC to account for temperature effects. STATISTICAL TESTS: Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance and post hoc tests were used to evaluate differences in ADC, CV, and CVM across scanners and protocols (α = 0.05). RESULTS: ADCs were within 11% (interquartile range [IQR] 7%) of reference values and significantly improved to 2% (IQR 7%) after normalization to an internal water reference. Normalization significantly reduced interscanner variability of ADC estimates from 7% to 4%. DW-MRI protocol did not affect ADC accuracy; however, the clinical and higher-resolution clinical protocols resulted in the greatest (9%) and least (6%) interscanner variability, respectively. The 8- and 16-channel receive coils yielded similar accuracy (PD: 12% vs. 16%) and precision (CVM : 2.7% vs. 2.9%). DATA CONCLUSION: Normalization by an internal reference improved interscanner ADC reproducibility. High-resolution protocols yielded comparably accurate and significantly less variable ADCs compared to a clinical standard protocol. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 1.

RESUMEN

Despite over a century of intensive efforts, the great gains promised by the War on Cancer nearly 50 years ago have not materialized. Since 1999, we have analyzed the lack of progress in explaining and "curing" cancer by examining the merits of the premises that determine how cancer is understood and treated. Our ongoing critical analyses have aimed at clarifying the sources of misunderstandings at the root of the cancer puzzle while providing a plausible and comprehensive biomedical perspective as well as a new theory of carcinogenesis that is compatible with evolutionary theory. In this essay, we explain how this new theory, the tissue organization field theory (TOFT), can help chart a path to progress for cancer researchers by explaining features of cancer that remain unexplainable from the perspective of the still hegemonic somatic mutation theory (SMT) and its variants. Of equal significance, the premises underlying the TOFT offer new perspectives on basic biological phenomena.

Industrial fish and aquaculture processing leads to the generation of a huge quantity of by-products, whose accumulation and mismanagement involve serious environmental consequences as well as high economic losses. Taking advantage of these residues as a source of added-value compounds must be a priority in a circular economy. This work is a preliminary study to analyze the possibility of using the eutectic mixture of urea and sodium acetate trihydrate as a solvent for collagen extraction. To that end, the solid-liquid equilibrium of the system was determined in order to define the exact composition and temperature of the eutectic. The solubility in this solvent of the main amino acids that constitute fish collagen was studied at several temperatures and atmospheric pressure. At 308.15 K, solubilities of the major constituents of the target protein, namely L-proline, trans-4-hydroxy-L-proline, and glycine, were 0.19, 0.16, and 0.12 (mass fraction), respectively. These values increased with temperature. Dilution with water (50 wt%) allowed operation at lower temperature and led to an increase in the solubilities. The van 't Hoff model was satisfactorily used to correlate the experimental data and to calculate apparent properties of dissolution. All the dissolution processes studied herein are endothermic, non-spontaneous, and enthalpy-driven. Both the eutectic and its mixture with water are promising solvents for the design of an environmentally benign process for collagen extraction.

RESUMEN

Idiopathic achalasia is a chronic oesophageal motility disorder caused by loss of inhibitory neurons at the esophageal myenteric plexus resulting in incomplete relaxation of the lower oesophageal sphincter and abnormal peristaltism.  Among the possible causes of this, an immune response secondary to infection by some viruses has been implicated. SARS-CoV-2 could be considered among them. The therapy option should be aimed at achieving the greatest clinical effectiveness according to each patient's health status.

PURPOSE: Stress during pregnancy has many negative repercussions on maternal and foetal health. It is therefore important to understand which therapies are effective in reducing stress levels and which variables influence the outcomes of these therapies. In this line, psychological resilience could play a key role. Thus, the aim of the study was to check whether pregnant women with different levels of resilience have different benefits in reducing cortisol levels, perceived stress, pregnancy worries, stress vulnerability, anxiety or depression through Cognitive Behavioural Stress Management Therapy. METHOD: The total sample consisted of 56 pregnant women: one group of pregnant women with high levels of resilience (n = 35); and another group with low levels of resilience (n = 21). Participants' cortisol concentration levels, perceived stress, pregnancy concerns, stress vulnerability, anxiety and depressive symptoms were assessed before and after therapy. Linear mixed models were performed to compare the two groups, which showed a group x time interaction for perceived stress. RESULTS: The low resilience group showed a reduction in their perceived stress levels with a medium effect after the intervention compared to the high resilience group, but no reduction was found in this group. No differences were found between the two groups on the other variables. CONCLUSION: Knowing which variables have a differential effect on the results of psychological therapy would allow delimiting the groups that obtain greater benefits from the therapy. This may lead to more efficient implementation of effective intervention programmes.

PURPOSE: Restriction spectrum imaging (RSI) decomposes the diffusion-weighted MRI signal into separate components of known apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs). The number of diffusion components and optimal ADCs for RSI are organ-specific and determined empirically. The purpose of this work was to determine the RSI model for breast tissues. METHODS: The diffusion-weighted MRI signal was described using a linear combination of multiple exponential components. A set of ADC values was estimated to fit voxels in cancer and control ROIs. Later, the signal contributions of each diffusion component were estimated using these fixed ADC values. Relative-fitting residuals and Bayesian information criterion were assessed. Contrast-to-noise ratio between cancer and fibroglandular tissue in RSI-derived signal contribution maps was compared to DCE imaging. RESULTS: A total of 74 women with breast cancer were scanned at 3.0 Tesla MRI. The fitting residuals of conventional ADC and Bayesian information criterion suggest that a 3-component model improves the characterization of the diffusion signal over a biexponential model. Estimated ADCs of triexponential model were D1,3 = 0, D2,3 = 1.5 × 10-3 , and D3,3 = 10.8 × 10-3 mm2 /s. The RSI-derived signal contributions of the slower diffusion components were larger in tumors than in fibroglandular tissues. Further, the contrast-to-noise and specificity at 80% sensitivity of DCE and a subset of RSI-derived maps were equivalent. CONCLUSION: Breast diffusion-weighted MRI signal was best described using a triexponential model. Tumor conspicuity in breast RSI model is comparable to that of DCE without the use of exogenous contrast. These data may be used as differential features between healthy and malignant breast tissues.

A non-dissolving pretreatment consisting in the direct contact of cellulose and the ionic liquid tetra(n-butyl)phosphonium acetate, or its fluid mixtures with other phosphonium ionic liquids or with molecular liquids such as ethanol or DMSO, causes a reduction in the crystallinity of the popular microcrystalline cellulose-type Avicel PH-101 under mild conditions. At the same time, the degree of polymerization and the thermal stability of the pretreated Avicel remain essentially unaltered with respect to the untreated Avicel. The diminution of the crystallinity has been related to the increase of the reactivity of the pretreated Avicel samples via analysis of the kinetics of their enzymatic hydrolysis. For selected samples, this improved reactivity has been confirmed through their effective carboxymethylation under a simplified and milder reaction procedure.

The promising experimental performance of surfactant blends encourages their use in recovering the large quantity of crude oil still remaining in carbonate reservoirs. Phase behavior studies were carried out in this work to propose a blend for practical application. To that aim, the surfactants dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium (AOT) and polyoxyethylene(8) octyl ether carboxylic acid (Akypo LF2) were mixed. A formulation consisting of 1 wt% of AOT50wt%/LF250wt% blend in synthetic sea water (SSW) led to a low value of interfacial tension with crude oil of 1.50·10-2 mN/m, and 0.42 mg/grock of dynamic adsorption. A moderate additional oil recovery (7.3% of the original oil in place) was achieved in a core flooding test. To improve this performance, the surface-active ionic liquid 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C12mim]Br) was added to the system. The electrostatic interactions between the oppositely charged surfactants (AOT and [C12mim]Br) led to a higher surface activity. Thus, a formulation consisting of 0.8 wt% of AOT20.7wt%/[C12mim]Br25.3wt%/LF254wt% in SSW reduced the interfacial tension and surfactant adsorption achieved with the binary blend to 1.14 × 10-2 mN/m and 0.21 mg/grock, respectively. The additional oil recovery achieved with the blend containing the ionic liquid was 11.5% of the original oil in place, significantly improving the efficiency of the binary blend.

RNA is highly negatively charged and often acquires complex structures that require the presence of divalent cations. Subtle changes in conformation resulting from changes in sequence can affect the way ions associate with RNA. Riboswitches are RNA molecules that are involved in the control of gene expression in bacteria and are excellent systems for testing the effects of sequence variations on the conformation of RNA because they contain a highly conserved binding pocket but present sequence variability among different organisms. In this work, we have compared the aptamer domain of a proposed M-box riboswitch from Mycobacterium tuberculosis with the aptamer domain of a validated M-box riboswitch from Bacillus subtilis. We have in vitro transcribed and purified wild-type (WT) M-box riboswitches from M. tuberculosis and B. subtilis as well as a variety of mutated aptamers in which regions from one riboswitch have been replaced with regions from the other riboswitch. We have used ultraviolet unfolding experiments and circular dichroism to characterize the interactions of WT and related M-box riboswitches with divalent cations. Our results show that M-box from M. tuberculosis associates with Mg2+ and Sr2+ in a similar fashion while M-box from B. subtilis discriminates between these two ions and appears to associate better with Mg2+. Our overall results show that M-box from M. tuberculosis interacts differently with cations than M-box from B. subtilis and suggest conformational differences between these two riboswitches.

RESUMEN

RNA represents a vibrant area of research and many studies use techniques that require large amounts of purified RNA. One common purification method involves slicing a section of a polyacrylamide gel containing the RNA of interest and eluting the RNA out of the gel using electroelution. Various electroeluter models are available but sometimes a given model becomes discontinued, compelling researchers to choose a different model. Here, we have compared two electroeluters with different chamber designs for their ability to recover RNA from gel pieces. Our results show that both electroeluters are effective and recover comparable amounts of purified RNA.

BACKGROUND: Multicompartmental modeling outperforms conventional diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the assessment of prostate cancer. Optimized multicompartmental models could further improve the detection and characterization of prostate cancer. PURPOSE: To optimize multicompartmental signal models and apply them to study diffusion in normal and cancerous prostate tissue in vivo. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: Forty-six patients who underwent MRI examination for suspected prostate cancer; 23 had prostate cancer and 23 had no detectable cancer. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: 3T multishell diffusion-weighted sequence. ASSESSMENT: Multicompartmental models with 2-5 tissue compartments were fit to DWI data from the prostate to determine optimal compartmental apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs). These ADCs were used to compute signal contributions from the different compartments. The Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) and model-fitting residuals were calculated to quantify model complexity and goodness-of-fit. Tumor contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and tumor-to-background signal intensity ratio (SIR) were computed for conventional DWI and multicompartmental signal-contribution maps. STATISTICAL TESTS: Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and two-sample t-tests (α = 0.05) were used to compare fitting residuals between prostate regions and between multicompartmental models. T-tests (α = 0.05) were also used to assess differences in compartmental signal-fraction between tissue types and CNR/SIR between conventional DWI and multicompartmental models. RESULTS: The lowest BIC was observed from the 4-compartment model, with optimal ADCs of 5.2e-4, 1.9e-3, 3.0e-3, and >3.0e-2 mm2 /sec. Fitting residuals from multicompartmental models were significantly lower than from conventional ADC mapping (P < 0.05). Residuals were lowest in the peripheral zone and highest in tumors. Tumor tissue showed the largest reduction in fitting residual by increasing model order. Tumors had a greater proportion of signal from compartment 1 than normal tissue (P < 0.05). Tumor CNR and SIR were greater on compartment-1 signal maps than conventional DWI (P < 0.05) and increased with model order. DATA CONCLUSION: The 4-compartment signal model best described diffusion in the prostate. Compartmental signal contributions revealed by this model may improve assessment of prostate cancer. BACKGROUND: Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is integral to detection of prostate cancer (PCa), but conventional apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) cannot capture the complexity of prostate tissues and tends to yield noisy images that do not distinctly highlight cancer. A four-compartment restriction spectrum imaging (RSI4 ) model was recently found to optimally characterize pelvic diffusion signals, and the model coefficient for the slowest diffusion compartment, RSI4 -C1 , yielded greatest tumor conspicuity. PURPOSE: To evaluate the slowest diffusion compartment of a four-compartment spectrum imaging model (RSI4 -C1 ) as a quantitative voxel-level classifier of PCa. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: Forty-six men who underwent an extended MRI acquisition protocol for suspected PCa. Twenty-three men had benign prostates, and the other 23 men had PCa. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3 T, multishell diffusion-weighted and axial T2-weighted sequences. ASSESSMENT: High-confidence cancer voxels were delineated by expert consensus, using imaging data and biopsy results. The entire prostate was considered benign in patients with no detectable cancer. Diffusion images were used to calculate RSI4 -C1 and conventional ADC. Classifier images were also generated. STATISTICAL TESTS: Voxel-level discrimination of PCa from benign prostate tissue was assessed via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves generated by bootstrapping with patient-level case resampling. RSI4 -C1 was compared to conventional ADC for two metrics: area under the ROC curve (AUC) and false-positive rate for a sensitivity of 90% (FPR90 ). Statistical significance was assessed using bootstrap difference with two-sided α = 0.05. RESULTS: RSI4 -C1 outperformed conventional ADC, with greater AUC (mean 0.977 [95% CI: 0.951-0.991] vs. 0.922 [0.878-0.948]) and lower FPR90 (0.032 [0.009-0.082] vs. 0.201 [0.132-0.290]). These improvements were statistically significant (P < 0.05). DATA CONCLUSION: RSI4 -C1 yielded a quantitative, voxel-level classifier of PCa that was superior to conventional ADC. RSI classifier images with a low false-positive rate might improve PCa detection and facilitate clinical applications like targeted biopsy and treatment planning. BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted (DW) echo-planar imaging (EPI) is prone to geometric distortions due to B0 inhomogeneities. Both prospective and retrospective approaches have been developed to decrease and correct such distortions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this work was to evaluate the performance of reduced-field-of-view (FOV) acquisition and retrospective distortion correction methods in decreasing distortion artifacts for breast imaging. Coverage of the axilla in reduced-FOV DW magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and residual distortion were also assessed. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION/PHANTOM: Breast phantom and 169 women (52.4 ± 13.4 years old) undergoing clinical breast MRI. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3.0 T/ full- and reduced-FOV DW gradient-echo EPI sequence. ASSESSMENT: Performance of reversed polarity gradient (RPG) and FSL topup in correcting breast full- and reduced-FOV EPI data was evaluated using the mutual information (MI) metric between EPI and anatomical images. Two independent breast radiologists determined if coverage on both EPI data sets was adequate to evaluate axillary nodes and identified residual nipple distortion artifacts. STATISTICAL TESTS: Two-way repeated-measures analyses of variance and post hoc tests were used to identify differences between EPI modality and distortion correction method. Generalized linear mixed effects models were used to evaluate differences in axillary coverage and residual nipple distortion. RESULTS: In a breast phantom, residual distortions were 0.16 ± 0.07 cm and 0.22 ± 0.13 cm in reduced- and full-FOV EPI with both methods, respectively. In patients, MI significantly increased after distortion correction of full-FOV (11 ± 5% and 18 ± 9%, RPG and topup) and reduced-FOV (8 ± 4% both) EPI data. Axillary nodes were observed in 99% and 69% of the cases in full- and reduced-FOV EPI images. Residual distortion was observed in 93% and 0% of the cases in full- and reduced-FOV images. DATA CONCLUSION: Minimal distortion was achieved with RPG applied to reduced-FOV EPI data. RPG improved distortions for full-FOV images but with more modest improvements and limited correction near the nipple. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 3 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 1.

RESUMEN

Scientific projects frequently involve measurements of thermophysical, thermochemical, and other related properties of chemical compounds and materials. These measured property data have significant potential value for the scientific community, but incomplete and inaccurate reporting often hampers their utilization. The present IUPAC Technical Report summarizes the needs of chemical engineers and researchers as consumers of these data and shows how publishing practices can improve information transfer. In the Report, general principles of Good Reporting Practice are developed together with examples illustrating typical cases of reporting issues. Adoption of these principles will improve the quality, reproducibility, and usefulness of experimental data, bring a better level of consistency to results, and increase the efficiency and impact of research. Closely related to Good Reporting Practice, basic elements of Good Research Practice are also introduced with a goal to reduce the number of ambiguities and unresolved problems within the thermophysical property data domain.

Displacement of a viscous fluid by a less viscous one is a challenging problem that usually involves the formation of interfacial digitations propagating into each one of the fluids, mixing them and preventing their normal displacement. We propose in this manuscript a protocol that is implemented via numerical simulation of the corresponding equations to improve the efficiency of the displacement. We consider a chemically active interface between the two chemically active fluids that produce a large viscosity interface that facilitates the process. All the relevant parameters of the mechanism are numerically analyzed aiming to optimize the efficiency of the method.

Neotropical ecosystems are highly biodiverse; however, the excessive use of pesticides has polluted freshwaters, with deleterious effects on aquatic biota. This study aims to analyze concentrations of active ingredients (a.i) of pesticides and the risks posed to freshwater Neotropical ecosystems. We compiled information from 1036 superficial water samples taken in Costa Rica between 2009 and 2019. We calculated the detection frequency for 85 a.i. and compared the concentrations with international regulations. The most frequently detected pesticides were diuron, ametryn, pyrimethanil, flutolanil, diazinon, azoxystrobin, buprofezin, and epoxiconazole, with presence in >20% of the samples. We observed 32 pesticides with concentrations that exceeded international regulations, and the ecological risk to aquatic biota (assessed using the multi-substance potentially affected fraction model (msPAF)) revealed that 5% and 13% of the samples from Costa Rica pose a high or moderate acute risk, especially to primary producers and arthropods. Other Neotropical countries are experiencing the same trend with high loads of pesticides and consequent high risk to aquatic ecosystems. This information is highly valuable for authorities dealing with prospective and retrospective risk assessments for regulatory decisions in tropical countries. At the same time, this study highlights the need for systematic pesticide residue monitoring of fresh waters in the Neotropical region.

Food packaging is of high societal value because it conserves and protects food, makes food transportable and conveys information to consumers. It is also relevant for marketing, which is of economic significance. Other types of food contact articles, such as storage containers, processing equipment and filling lines, are also important for food production and food supply. Food contact articles are made up of one or multiple different food contact materials and consist of food contact chemicals. However, food contact chemicals transfer from all types of food contact materials and articles into food and, consequently, are taken up by humans. Here we highlight topics of concern based on scientific findings showing that food contact materials and articles are a relevant exposure pathway for known hazardous substances as well as for a plethora of toxicologically uncharacterized chemicals, both intentionally and non-intentionally added. We describe areas of certainty, like the fact that chemicals migrate from food contact articles into food, and uncertainty, for example unidentified chemicals migrating into food. Current safety assessment of food contact chemicals is ineffective at protecting human health. In addition, society is striving for waste reduction with a focus on food packaging. As a result, solutions are being developed toward reuse, recycling or alternative (non-plastic) materials. However, the critical aspect of chemical safety is often ignored. Developing solutions for improving the safety of food contact chemicals and for tackling the circular economy must include current scientific knowledge. This cannot be done in isolation but must include all relevant experts and stakeholders. Therefore, we provide an overview of areas of concern and related activities that will improve the safety of food contact articles and support a circular economy. Our aim is to initiate a broader discussion involving scientists with relevant expertise but not currently working on food contact materials, and decision makers and influencers addressing single-use food packaging due to environmental concerns. Ultimately, we aim to support science-based decision making in the interest of improving public health. Notably, reducing exposure to hazardous food contact chemicals contributes to the prevention of associated chronic diseases in the human population.
