RESUMEN

Pairs of 1st-year breeding bobwhites were fed constant or decreasing concentrations of monocrotophos for 15 days. In addition, a control diet was used in a pair-fed group matched with the pairs in the constant group. Dietary concentrations for the constant group were logarithmically spaced at .100, .178, .316, .562, 1.000 ppm of actual insecticide and also at 0 ppm (control) for five pairs at each concentration. The beginning concentrations for (control) for five pairs at each concentration. The beginning concentrations for the decreasing pairs were identical to the constant group but regularly decreased to reach 25% of the starting concentrations by Day 13. Food consumption, egg production, hatchability of eggs under artificial incubation, and survival of hatched chicks for 2 weeks were recorded pairwise during 15-day treatment and 14-day posttreatment periods. Mortality was high at the greatest constant concentration and in the associated pair-fed group. Food consumption and egg production rates were negatively dose-related during the treatment period in the constant and decreasing groups. The laying rate of pair-fed hens was reduced to the same extent as in the constant group. Reproductive inhibition was not permanent, and pairs resumed laying after a dose-related recovery interval. No dose-related effects on hatchability or chick survival were detected. There was no evidence of a pesticide effect on reproduction other than that exerted through pesticide-induced anorexia.

From 1977-1978 to 1990, concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and most organochlorine pesticides declined in eggs of red-breasted mergansers (Mergus serrator) nesting on islands in northwestern Lake Michigan. Total PCBs decreased 60% (from 21 ppm in 1977-1978 to 8.5 ppm in 1990) and p,p'-DDE decreased 66% (from 6.5 to 2.2 ppm). Dieldrin decreased only 16% (from 0.82 to 0.69 ppm). In 1990, 79.1% of incubated eggs hatched, which was not significantly different from the 83.5% that hatched in 1977-1978.

Great Lakes waterbird populations have experienced less-than-expected hatchability of eggs and a greater-than-expected incidence of developmental abnormalities. Such deleterious effects have been attributed to polyhalogenated hydrocarbons such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs are of primary concern since they are present in significant quantities in the environment. Specific PCB congeners, 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (IUPAC number 126), 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (IUPAC number 77), and 2,3,3',4,4'-pentachlorobiphenyl (IUPAC number 105), were injected (singly or in combination) into the yolks of White Leghorn chicken (Gallus domesticus) eggs prior to incubation. Teratogenicity was assessed in dead embryos and in hatchlings. Hatchlings were raised for 3 wk to assess body weight gain and mortality. At the end of the 3-wk period, chicks were subjected to necropsy and the brain, bursa, heart, liver, spleen, and testes were removed and weighed. All 3 congeners caused increased embryo mortality, with approximately 50% mortality occurring at 0.6, 8.8, and 5592 micrograms/kg egg for congeners 126, 77, and 105, respectively. All three congeners also produced significantly more abnormalities than the vehicle. Chicks from PCB-injected eggs had lower body weights at wk 2 and 3 of age. Congener 126 caused lower relative bursa weights, congener 77 caused greater relative spleen weights and lower relative liver weights, and all three congeners caused relative heart weights to be greater when compared to control.

Double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) eggs at pipping and sibling 10-day-old chicks were collected from two colonies in Green Bay, WI, one colony in Lake Michigan, WI, and reference colonies in South Dakota and Minnesota. Egg contents and chicks were analyzed for organochlorine contaminants including polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners. Livers of embryos and chicks were assayed for hepatic microsomal ethoxyresorufin-O-dealkylase (EROD) activity. Eggshell thickness and the physical dimensions of embryo brains were measured. Concentrations of organochlorines, including p,p'-DDE (p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene), PCBs, and PCB congeners were generally an order of magnitude higher in eggs and chicks from Wisconsin than from reference locations. Total PCBs averaged 10-13 microg/g wet weight in eggs from three Wisconsin colonies compared to 0.9 microg/g PCBs from reference locations. Double-crested cormorant chicks accumulated on average 33-66 microg PCBs/day and 7-12 microg p,p'-DDE/day in the Wisconsin colonies compared to 0 microg PCBs/day and 1 microg p,p'-DDE/day in the reference colonies. At pipping, EROD activity in the livers of cormorant embryos was significantly higher in the Wisconsin colonies and significantly correlated with PCBs and the toxic equivalents (TEQs) of aryl hydrocarbon-active PCB congeners relative to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin. However, in 10-day-old chicks EROD activity was not consistently different among colonies and was not correlated with PCBs or TEQs. A significant negative relationship between embryo brain asymmetry and the size of the egg suggested that physical constraint might be an important factor influencing the response of this bioindicator. Thinner eggshells in two colonies located near Door County, Wisconsin, suggested that historic p,p'-DDE residues associated with orchards are still an important source of p,p'-DDE in the local environment.
