RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A recent Japanese phase three clinical trial for lung cancer suggested a possible advantage of segmentectomy over lobectomy in terms of death from other diseases. This study aimed to compare the risk of death from other diseases based on surgical procedures in lung cancer patients without recurrence. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 2121 patients without disease recurrence after curative resection for lung cancer at our institution. Patient characteristics and overall survival were compared between sublobar resection and lobectomy. RESULTS: The sublobar group (n = 595) had a significantly higher proportion of women, non-smokers, patients without comorbidities, patients with a history of other cancers, and patients with earlier-staged disease when compared with the lobectomy group (n = 1526). The overall survival was significantly longer in the sublobar group than in the lobectomy group (p = 0.0034). After adjusting for background characteristics in an analysis of 488 patients, the overall survival had a trend to be longer in the sublobar group than in the lobectomy group (p = 0.071). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that the risk of death from other diseases was potentially higher after lobectomy than after sublobar resection. Although several clinical factors could influence the results, these results may support the benefit of sublobar resection, assuming that the curability of both procedures is similar.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: 27-Hydroxycholesterol (27-HC) derived from sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A1) has pro-inflammatory biological activity and is associated with oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in COPD. However, the role of regulation of CYP27A1- 27-HC axis in asthma is unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the contribution of the axis to the pathophysiology of asthma. METHODS: House dust mite (HDM) extract was intranasally administered to C57BL/6 mice and the expression of CYP27A1 in the airways was analyzed by immunostaining. The effect of pre-treatment with PBS or CYP27A1 inhibitors on the cell fraction in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was analyzed in the murine model. In vitro, BEAS-2B cells were treated with HDM and the levels of CYP27A1 expression were examined. Furthermore, the effect of 27-HC on the expressions of E-cadherin and ZO-1 in the cells was analyzed. The amounts of RANTES and eotaxin from the 27-HC-treated cells were analyzed by ELISA. RESULTS: The administration of HDM increased the expression of CYP27A1 in the airways of mice as well as the number of eosinophils in the BALF. CYP27A1 inhibitors ameliorated the HDM-induced increase in the number of eosinophils in the BALF. Treatment with HDM increased the expression of CYP27A1 in BEAS-2B cells. The administration of 27-HC to BEAS-2B cells suppressed the expression of E-cadherin and ZO-1, and augmented the production of RANTES and eotaxin. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study suggest that aeroallergen could enhance the induction of CYP27A1, leading to allergic airway inflammation and disruption of the airway epithelial tight junction through 27-HC production.

RESUMEN

Nitric oxide (NO) is a signaling molecule that plays a variety of functions in the human body, but it is difficult to use it in biological experiments or for therapeutic purposes because of its high reactivity and instability in the biological milieu. Consequently, photocontrollable NO releasers, which enable spatiotemporal control of NO release, have an important role in elucidating the functions of NO. Our group has developed visible-light-controllable NO-releasing molecules that contain a fluorescent dye structure as a light-harvesting antenna moiety and an N-nitrosoaminophenol structure as an NO-releasing moiety. Here, we aimed to construct an NO-generating system employing an intermolecular photoredox reaction between the two separate components, since this would simplify chemical synthesis and make it easier to examine various dyes as antennae. For this purpose, we constructed polymer nanoparticles doped with both N-methyl-N-nitroso-4-aminophenol (NAP, 1) and an Ir(III) antenna complex (2, 3 or 4) in order to dissolve in aqueous solution without a co-solvent. These polymer nanoparticles released NO upon photoirradiation in vitro in the purple (400-430 nm) or blue (400-460 nm) wavelength region to activate the doped Ir(III) complex.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Among anatomical sublobar resection techniques for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the clinical benefit of subsegmentectomy remains unclear. We investigated whether anatomical sublobar resection including subsegmentectomy-segmental resection with subsegmental additional resection or subsegmental resection alone-is an effective and feasible surgical procedure for NSCLC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data of 285 patients with clinical stage I NSCLC who underwent anatomical sublobar resection at our institution from January 2013 to March 2021 and compared surgical outcomes between patients who underwent anatomical sublobar resection including (IS; n = 50) and excluding (ES; n = 235) subsegmentectomy. RESULTS: No significant intergroup differences were noted in terms of age, sex, smoking, comorbidities, tumor size or location, consolidation tumor ratio, and preoperative pulmonary function. The IS group had more preoperative computed tomography-guided markings (34 vs. 15%; p = .004) and smaller resected lung volumes converted to the total subsegment number [3 (2-4) vs. 3 (3-6); p = .02] than the ES group. No significant differences in margin distance [mm, 20 (15-20) vs. 20 (20-20); p = .93], readmission rate (2% vs. 3%; p > .99), and intraoperative (8% vs. 7%; p = .77) or postoperative (8% vs. 10%; p = .80) complication rates were observed, and the 5-year local recurrence-free survival (91% vs. 90%; p = .92) or postoperative pulmonary function change were comparable between both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although further investigations are required, anatomical sublobar resection including subsegmentectomy for clinical stage I NSCLC could be an acceptable therapeutic option.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptor B4 (LILRB4) is one of the inhibitory receptors in various types of immune cells including macrophages. Previous reports suggested that LILRB4 could be involved in a negative feedback system to prevent excessive inflammatory responses. However, its role has been unclear in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in which macrophages play a crucial role in the pathogenesis. In this study, we aimed to examine the changes of LILRB4 on macrophages both in the lung specimens of COPD patients and the lungs of a mouse emphysema model. We then tried to compare the differences in both inflammation and emphysematous changes of the model between wild-type and LILRB4-deficient mice in order to elucidate the role of LILRB4 in the pathogenesis of COPD. METHODS: We prepared single-cell suspensions of resected lung specimens of never-smokers (n = 21), non-COPD smokers (n = 16), and COPD patients (n = 14). The identification of LILRB4-expressing cells and the level of LILRB4 expression were evaluated by flow cytometry. We analyzed the relationships between the LILRB4 expression and clinical characteristics including respiratory function. In the experiments using an elastase-induced mouse model of emphysema, we also analyzed the LILRB4 expression on lung macrophages. We compared inflammatory cell accumulation and emphysematous changes induced by elastase instillation between wild-type and LILRB4-deficient mice. RESULTS: The levels of surface expression of LILRB4 are relatively high on monocyte linage cells including macrophages in the human lungs. The percentage of LILRB4+ cells in lung interstitial macrophages was increased in COPD patients compared to non-COPD smokers (p = 0.018) and correlated with the severity of emphysematous lesions detected by CT scan (rs = 0.559, p < 0.001), whereas the amount of smoking showed no correlation with LILRB4 expression. Increased LILRB4 on interstitial macrophages was also observed in elastase-treated mice (p = 0.008). LILRB4-deficient mice showed severer emphysematous lesions with increased MMP-12 expression in the model. CONCLUSIONS: LILRB4 on interstitial macrophages was upregulated both in human COPD lungs and in a mouse model of emphysema. This upregulated LILRB4 may have a protective effect against emphysema formation, possibly through decreasing MMP-12 expression in the lungs.

RESUMEN

Although the chemistry of transition-metal complexes with carbonyl (CO) and thiocarbonyl (CS) ligands has been well developed, their heavier analogues, namely selenocarbonyl (CSe) and tellurocarbonyl (CTe) complexes remain scarce. The limited availability of such CSe and CTe complexes has so far hampered our understanding of the differences between such chalcogenocarbonyl (CE: E=O, S, Se, Te) ligands. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of a series of cationic half-sandwich ruthenium CE complexes of the type [CpRu(CE)(H2 IMes)(CNCH2 Ts)][BArF 4 ] (Cp=η5 -C5 H5 - ; H2 IMes=1,3-dimesitylimidazolin-2-ylidene; ArF =3,5-(CF3 )2 C6 H3 ). A combination of X-ray diffraction analyses, NMR spectroscopic analyses, and DFT calculations revealed an increasing π-accepting ability of the CE ligands in the order O

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To assess the removal performance of low-volume post-hemodiafiltration (HDF) with Japanese hemodiafilters and the removal performance with 20 % reduction in the total dialysate flow rate (Qdtotal). METHODS: Subjects were 8 patients undergoing pre-HDF. Study 1: Post-HDF was performed at a blood flow rate (Qb) of 250 mL/min and a total volume of substitution fluid (Vs) of 12 L/session(s) for 4 hrs using Fineflux-210Seco (FIX), ABH-21PA (ABH), and NVF-21H (NVF). We assessed removal efficiency of small molecular solutes, low-molecular-weight-proteins and the amount of albumin loss. Study 2: Post-HDF was performed at Vs of 12 L/s under G-1, Qdtotal of 500 and Qb of 250 mL/min; G-2, Qdtotal of 400 and Qb of 250 mL/min; and G-3, Qdtotal of 400 and Qb of 300 mL/min. Removal efficiency was compared and analyzed between these conditions. RESULTS: Study 1: The results using FIX, ABH and NVF are shown in order. The Kt/V were 1.8, 1.9 and 1.8. The ß2-Microglobulin (MG) removal rate (RR) (%) were 81.2, 83.1 and 82.8, and the α1-MG RR were 37.4, 40.2 and 38.5, respectively. Study 2: The results in G-1, 2 and 3 are shown in order. The Kt/V and the RR of small solutes, were significantly higher in G-3. The ß2-MG RR (%) were 81.2, 80.1 and 81.0, and the α1-MG RR were 37.4, 37.5 and 38.0, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Low-volume post-HDF performed at Qb of 250 mL/min with Japanese high-performance hemodiafilters exhibited favorable removal efficiency for all solutes. Even with 20 % reduction in Qdtotal, the removal performance was also favorable.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the midfacial fracture patterns and management approaches between pediatric and adult patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 164 pediatric patients (<16 years old) and 564 nongeriatric adult patients (16 to 65 years old) with midfacial fractures at a single institution between 2011 and 2016. The location of the fractures, along with the etiology and management of the midfacial fractures, were compared. RESULTS: Significantly greater proportions of pediatric versus adult patients had sports-related injuries (P < 0.001) and sustained nasal fractures (P < 0.001). On the other hand, significantly greater proportions of adult versus pediatric patients were injured in falls, traffic accidents, or assaults (P = 0.004, P < 0.001, and P = 0.002) and sustained maxillary or zygomatic fractures (P = 0.039 and P < 0.001). Bivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that the risks of nasal, maxillary, and zygomatic fractures were significantly related to age status after adjusting for etiology (P < 0.001, P = 0.045, and P < 0.001). In contrast, the risks of hospitalization and surgical treatment were significantly associated with etiology, but not with age status (P = 0.290 and P = 0.847). CONCLUSION: These data suggest that the age-related structure and composition of the facial skeleton affect the pediatric-specific fracture patterns independent of the etiology. The comparisons in this study may serve as a guide for the management of pediatric midfacial fractures.

RESUMEN

We aimed to investigate the effects of maternal chewing on prenatal stress-induced cognitive impairments in the offspring and to explore the molecular pathways of maternal chewing in a mice model. Maternal chewing ameliorated spatial learning impairments in the offspring in a Morris water maze test. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot findings revealed that maternal chewing alleviated hippocampal neurogenesis impairment and increased the expression of hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the offspring. In addition, maternal chewing increased the expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and 11ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase isozyme 2 (11ß-HSD2) and decreased the expression of 11ß-HSD1 in the placenta, thereby attenuating the increase of glucocorticoid in the offspring. Furthermore, maternal chewing increased the expression of 11ß-HSD2, FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP51) and FKBP52 and decreased the expression of 11ß-HSD1, thereby increasing hippocampal nuclear GR level. In addition, maternal chewing attenuated the increase in expression of DNMT1 and DNMT3a and the decrease in expression of histone H3 methylation at lysine 4, 9, 27 and histone H3 acetylation at lysine 9 induced by prenatal stress in the offspring. Our findings suggest that maternal chewing could ameliorate prenatal stress-induced cognitive impairments in the offspring at least in part by protecting placenta barrier function, alleviating hippocampal nuclear GR transport impairment and increasing the hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) level.

RESUMEN

Yokukansan (YKS) is a traditional Japanese herbal medicine. It has been currently applied for treating behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in Japan. We investigated the effect of YKS on learning ability, hippocampal cell proliferation, and neural ultrastructural features in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 8 (SAMP8), a proposed animal model of Alzheimer's disease. Five-month-old male SAMP8 mice were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The control group had drug-free water ad libitum. The experimental mice were given 0.15% aqueous solution of YKS orally for eight weeks. Learning ability was assessed in Morris water maze test. Hippocampal cell proliferation was investigated using bromodeoxyuridine immunohistochemical method. The neural ultrastructural features, including myelin sheath and synapse, were investigated electron microscopy. Administration with YKS improved the hippocampal cell proliferation in dentate gyrus, and ameliorated learning impairment in SAMP8 mice. Numerous lipofuscin inclusions were presented in hippocampal neurons of the control mice. However, little were found after treatment with YKS. Myelin sheath was thicker and postsynaptic density length was longer after treatment with YKS. Administration with YKS ameliorated learning impairment in SAMP8 mice, mediated at least partially via delaying neuronal aging process, neurogenesis, myelin sheath and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. These results suggest that YKS might be effective for preventing hippocampus-dependent cognitive deficits with age.

RESUMEN

Prenatal stress (PS) induces learning deficits and anxiety-like behavior in mouse pups by increasing corticosterone levels in the dam. We examined the effects of maternal chewing during PS on arginine vasopressin (AVP) mRNA expression in the dams and on neurogenesis, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA expression, learning deficits and anxiety-like behavior in the offspring. Mice were divided into control, stress and stress/chewing groups. Pregnant mice were exposed to restraint stress beginning on day 12 of pregnancy and continuing until delivery. Mice in the stress/chewing group were given a wooden stick to chew during restraint stress. PS significantly increased AVP mRNA expression in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus in the dams. PS also impaired learning ability, suppressed neurogenesis and BDNF mRNA expression in the hippocampus, and induced anxiety-like behavior in the offspring. Chewing during PS prevented the PS-induced increase in AVP mRNA expression of the PVN in the dams. Chewing during PS significantly attenuated the PS-induced learning deficits, anxiety-like behavior, and suppression of neurogenesis and BDNF mRNA expression in the hippocampus of the offspring. Chewing during PS prevented the increase in plasma corticosterone in the dam by inhibiting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity, and attenuated the attenuated the PS-induced suppression of neurogenesis and BDNF expression in the hippocampus of the pups, thereby ameliorating the PS-induced learning deficits and anxiety-like behavior. Chewing during PS is an effective stress-coping method for the dam to prevent PS-induced deficits in learning ability and anxiety-like behavior in the offspring.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is widely used in thoracic surgery. This study investigated the usefulness of the subxiphoid approach in thymectomy using VATS techniques. METHODS: Sixty operations were performed using the lateral approach (n = 46) and subxiphoid approach (n = 14). Using the lateral approach, 39 partial thymectomies (PT), 5 total or subtotal thymectomies (TT), and 2 total or subtotal thymectomies with combined resection of the surrounding organs (or tissues) (CR) were performed. Using the subxiphoid approach, 11 TT and 3 CR were performed. RESULTS: There were 33 females and 27 males, with a mean age of 55 years. The mean maximum tumor diameter was 4.0 cm. The operation time was prolonged according to the volume of thymectomy (PT: 119, TT: 234, CR: 347 min). Additionally, the intraoperative blood loss increased according to the volume of thymectomy (PT: 29, TT: 47, CR: 345 g). To compare the invasiveness of both approaches, we compared 16 TT operations. In the group using the subxiphoid approach, the operation time became shorter (158 vs. 392 min), and the blood loss decreased (5 vs. 135 g) compared with the lateral approach. Regarding laboratory data, white blood cell counts on postoperative day 1 (1POD) (8200 vs. 10,300/µl) and CRP on 1POD and 3POD (2.8 and 2.8 vs. 7.9 and 10.2 mg/dl, respectively) decreased in the subxiphoid approach compared with the lateral approach. CONCLUSIONS: The subxiphoid approach leads to a less invasive operation for anterior mediastinal tumors and extends the indications for VATS for invasive anterior mediastinal tumors.

RESUMEN

Chronic psychological stress is a risk factor for osteoporosis. Maternal active mastication during prenatal stress attenuates stress response. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that maternal active mastication influences the effect of prenatal stress on bone mass and bone microstructure in adult offspring. Pregnant ddY mice were randomly divided into control, stress, and stress/chewing groups. Mice in the stress and stress/chewing groups were placed in a ventilated restraint tube for 45 minutes, 3 times a day, and was initiated on day 12 of gestation and continued until delivery. Mice in the stress/chewing group were allowed to chew a wooden stick during the restraint stress period. The bone response of 5-month-old male offspring was evaluated using quantitative micro-CT, bone histomorphometry, and biochemical markers. Prenatal stress resulted in significant decrease of trabecular bone mass in both vertebra and distal femur of the offspring. Maternal active mastication during prenatal stress attenuated the reduced bone formation and increased bone resorption, improved the lower trabecular bone volume and bone microstructural deterioration induced by prenatal stress in the offspring. These findings indicate that maternal active mastication during prenatal stress can ameliorate prenatal stress-induced lower bone mass of the vertebra and femur in adult offspring. Active mastication during prenatal stress in dams could be an effective coping strategy to prevent lower bone mass in their offspring.

RESUMEN

The objectives of this study were to characterize and investigate the differences in amorphous states of gatifloxacin. We prepared two types of gatifloxacin amorphous solids coded as M and MQ using milling and melt-quenching methods, respectively. The amorphous solids were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and time-resolved near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Both the solids displayed halo XRD patterns, the characteristic of amorphous solids; however, in the non-isothermal DSC profiles, these amorphous solids were distinguished by their crystallization and melting temperatures. The Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose plots of non-isothermal crystallization temperatures at various heating rates indicated a lower activation energy of crystallization for the amorphous solid M than that of MQ. These results support the differentiation between two amorphous states with different physical and chemical properties.

RESUMEN

NMDARs play a major role in patterning of topographic sensory maps in the brain. Genetic knock-out of the essential subunit of NMDARs in excitatory cortical neurons prevents whisker-specific neural pattern formation in the barrel cortex. To determine the role of NMDARs en route to the cortex, we generated sensory thalamus-specific NR1 (Grin1)-null mice (ThNR1KO). A multipronged approach, using histology, electrophysiology, optical imaging, and behavioral testing revealed that, in these mice, whisker patterns develop in the trigeminal brainstem but do not develop in the somatosensory thalamus. Subsequently, there is no barrel formation in the neocortex yet a partial afferent patterning develops. Whisker stimulation evokes weak cortical activity and presynaptic neurotransmitter release probability is also affected. We found several behavioral deficits in tasks, ranging from sensorimotor to social and cognitive. Collectively, these results show that thalamic NMDARs play a critical role in the patterning of the somatosensory thalamic and cortical maps and their impairment may lead to pronounced behavioral defects.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The number of cases of wedge resection of small-sized pulmonary nodules performed under video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is increasing. Computed tomography (CT)-guided marking with hook wires has been used to locate the nodules that are not identifiable under VATS. However, this method is invasive and is associated with a risk of complications. METHODS: We evaluated the usefulness of marking the pleural surface above the nodule using crystal violet for 22 small-sized pulmonary nodules. Following the collapse of the lung, a long stick with a cotton tip dipped in crystal violet was inserted from the thoracic port or a small thoracotomy, and was placed against the inside of the chest wall right above the nodule with reference to the preoperative CT image. The lung was then expanded, and the crystal violet-infiltrated tip stained the visceral pleura. Regardless of the marking point, wedge resection of the lung was performed. To evaluate the accuracy of the marking, we measured the distance from the center of the marking to the point on the visceral pleural nearest to the nodule (DMN) in the resected lung specimen. RESULTS: This marking method caused no morbidity during or after the operation. The DMN ranged between 0 and 50 mm (mean ± SD 18.2 ± 12.6 mm). In 18 of 22 cases (81.8%), the DMN was 20 mm or less. CONCLUSIONS: The intraoperative marking method using crystal violet was performed with reasonable accuracy. It also caused no morbidity. It was easy and non-invasive. This method can be used in the cases in which CT-guided percutaneous marking is not feasible due to the nodule's location.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Many studies have described hamate hook fractures resulting from direct force from sporting tools. However, several authors have reported fractures that did not occur during swing-related activities. This study aimed to understand the injury mechanism of fractures by investigating their morphologies. METHODS: We selected patients with hamate hook fractures and collected data on computed tomography scans, injury causes, and how athletes handled sporting tools. RESULTS: We investigated 50 patients, and the study cohort included 32 patients who sustained injuries during sports: 24 during baseball (group A) and 8 during other sports (group B). Sixteen patients sustained injuries from falls (group C), and 2 had their hands crushed while using an industrial press machine (group D). In group A, most patients had a fracture line starting from the middle section of the radial side, accompanied by osteosclerotic changes in their lower hand. In group B, most patients had fracture morphologies similar to those of most patients in group A. The main morphology of fractures in group C was a transverse fracture at the base. Two patients in group D had minimal fragments at the tip of the hooks. CONCLUSIONS: Our results question the theory that most hamate hook fractures in athletes are caused by direct force exerted on the palm because the fracture morphology was different from that of patients injured by acute trauma from direct force. Instead, these fractures likely stem from an indirect mechanism involving repetitive force generated by the tendons and muscles acting on the hook.

RESUMEN

Background: The appropriate extent of hilar lymph node (LN) dissection in segmentectomy for lung cancer has not yet been fully investigated. Herein, we assessed the patterns of LN metastasis using network analyses. Methods: Patients with nodal metastases of non-small-cell lung cancer measuring ≤30 mm in diameter who underwent anatomical resection were included. The assumed pathways of metastasis were visualized using Cytoscape software. Metastasis to hilar (#10) or interlobar (#11) LNs but not to more peripheral ones was defined as skip N1 metastasis. Results: A total of 322 patients were included, with 123 of them having pleural invasive tumors and 32 having intrapulmonary metastases. There were 130 patients with pN1 disease and 192 with pN2 disease. The overall proportion of patients with skip N1 metastasis was 17%. Patients with lower lobe tumors had more frequent skip N1 metastasis than those with upper lobe tumors (31% vs. 10%, P<0.001) but had less frequent skip N2 metastasis (10% vs. 20%, P=0.02). The rates of skip metastasis to #11i in the right S6 tumor and right S9-10 tumor were unexpectedly high (22% and 17%, respectively). Similarly, skip metastasis to #11 in the left S6 tumor was relatively high (16%). There was a significant difference in the frequency of skip LN metastasis between tumors with and without pleural invasion (44% vs. 27%, P=0.001). Conclusions: The pattern of LN metastasis differed according to the localized segment of the tumor and the pleural invasion status.

RESUMEN

We developed a surgical support system that visualises important microanatomies using artificial intelligence (AI). This study evaluated its accuracy in recognising the thoracic nerves during lung cancer surgery. Recognition models were created with deep learning using images precisely annotated for nerves. Computational evaluation was performed using the Dice index and the Jaccard index. Four general thoracic surgeons evaluated the accuracy of nerve recognition. Further, the differences in time lag, image quality and smoothness of movement between the AI system and surgical monitor were assessed. Ratings were made using a five-point scale. The computational evaluation was relatively favourable, with a Dice index of 0.56 and a Jaccard index of 0.39. The AI system was used for 10 thoracoscopic surgeries for lung cancer. The accuracy of thoracic nerve recognition was satisfactory, with a recall score of 4.5 ± 0.4 and a precision score of 4.0 ± 0.9. Though smoothness of motion (3.2 ± 0.4) differed slightly, nearly no difference in time lag (4.9 ± 0.3) and image quality (4.6 ± 0.5) between the AI system and the surgical monitor were observed. In conclusion, the AI surgical support system has a satisfactory accuracy in recognising the thoracic nerves.
