RESUMEN

The number of neurocytes containing lipofuscin pigment (LEP) was determined in the nucleus infundibularis dorsalis (NID), the subfornical organ (SFO) and the medulla oblongata (MO) of the brain of sexually mature females and males of Rana temporaria L. approximately identical in length and age. The frogs were captured in their natural habitat in seven periods of the annual cycle. The number of LFP-positive neurocytes shows distinct seasonal variations in the analyzed areas. In general, neurocytes containing LFP were found in higher numbers during the winter months, and their significant drop was observed in summer. The results seem to suggest that cells containing LFP represent a certain kind of dynamic cellular system responding to various internal and/or external factors changing within a year.

RESUMEN

The changes in volume of neurocyte nuclei of the subfornical organ (SFO) of Rana temporaria L. under the influence of dehydration were analyzed in the annual cycle. Dehydration conspicuously influenced the activity of the neurocytes of the SFO during the year, depending on the stage of active life on land. It is suggested that in the amphibian under study, SFO participates in the regulation of water balance.

RESUMEN

The effects of an 8-week treatment with the quinine-lithium-salicylate combination Togal and sole acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) on the hemopoietic bone marrow cells of mice were studied. In general, both substances caused only minor changes. A slight leukopenia caused by higher doses as well as a transitory erythropenia observed a little bit more distinctly in ASA treated animals than in Togal treated animals need more detailed discussion, especially so because after a short two-week Togal treatment some animals showed an increase of hemopoietic cell colonies which a sole ASA dose did not cause. On the other hand, these results indicate a lower toxicity of Togal in comparison with acetylsalicylic acid as has been already shown in several other publications. It was proven that after a several weeks' treatment with therapeutic doses no pernicious influence on blood producing organs or pathological processes of the blood picture occurred. Only doses that border on the toxic region lead to insignificant bone marrow changes. As these over-doses are ten times the highest therapeutical dose the use of Togal does any damage to the blood forming tissue or pathological changes in the blood count are not likely. This has also been proved by other authors by means of long-term tests on humans.

RESUMEN

Three days following bilateral adrenalectomy the following findings were revealed in the hypothalamus-hypophysis and circum-ventricular organs of Balb mice: considerable enlargement of neuronal perikarya and nuclei in the nucleus arcuatus of the hypothalamus. Amitotic divisions were frequent in neurons and glial cells. Mitoses were also sporadically encountered. The pars distalis of the hypophysis showed typical post-adrenalectomy changes. In addition, enlargement of the so-called pars rostralis was observed. This part and the pars intermedia showed signs of enhanced secretion. The subfornical organ of the adrenalectomized animals was much smaller than in the controls. The subcommissural organ and pineal gland, on the contrary, were large and apparently actively secreting.
