RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of education provided to nursing students on MHL levels. METHODS: The study had a randomized pre-test post-test parallel control group design. Fifty-six (n = 56) first-year nursing students. In this study, CONSORT flow diagram was applied. The data collection forms consist of a personal information form and Mental Health Literacy Scale. In the statistical analysis Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used. RESULTS: Creative drama education was found to be significantly more effective than classroom education in increasing scores on the mental health literacy scale, including sub-dimensions for awareness of mental disorders, ability to access information, and stigma in nursing students (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Classroom education and creative drama are effective in changing mental health literacy scales. It is recommended to spread the use of creative drama, which is one of the artistic and interactive educational techniques in nursing education.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nurses are the first to intervene in women who were subjected to violence. It is necessary to prepare prospective nurses for this difficult situation in order to enable them to provide quality health services to the victims. Nursing education is of critical importance in gaining nursing students sufficient competencies that they can utilize in intervening in such cases. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the impact of creative drama education and in-class education on nursing students' attitudes toward violence against women. DESIGN: This study has a pre-test post-test parallel group randomized controlled design. SETTING: This study was carried out at a nursing school in Turkey. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-eight (n = 78) fourth-year undergraduate nursing science students. METHOD: In the collection of data, personal information form and ISKEBE Violence Against Women Attitude Scale were used. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test, and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found between the pre-test and post-test scores (Z = -4.911, p = 0.0001) of the experimental group (Z = -5054, p = 0.0001) and the control group. No significant correlation was found between the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups (Effect size = 0.06, Z = -0.525, p = 0.600). CONCLUSION: It was found that in-class teaching and creative drama were effective in changing the attitude toward violence against women. However, neither method was found to be superior to the other.

RESUMEN

Nutrition is a basic need and is crucial for the persistence of good health. This awareness has increased since December 2019 during the pandemic that the world is still facing. The importance of nutrition in infectious diseases was emphasized but the relationship between the severity of symptoms and nutrition status of individuals was not examined. This study compared the nutrition status of patients with COVID-19 admitted to the emergency service and the clinical severity of the disease. Based on the nutrition status of the 337 patients included in the study, 87.2% (294) of the patients were in the low-risk group while 12.8% (43) were in the high-risk group in terms of malnutrition. In the analysis conducted to examine the effect of nutrition on the severity of disease, the relationship between NRS 2002 and dyspnea, cough, weakness, fever, and other symptoms was statistically significant. It was concluded that healthy nutrition is crucial during the pandemic, and it is necessary to consider nutrition improvement as a way to cope with emerging viral infections.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This study identifies depression, anxiety and state guilt of Turkish citizens kept in quarantine for 14 days in an institution where they are brought upon their request within the scope of infection control measures and the related affecting risk factors during the coronavirus pandemic. METHODS: A total of 385 individuals under quarantine for 14 days between the dates of April 20-May 21, 2020 were included in the study. The data were collected using a socio-demographic data form (age, gender, employment status, having sleep disorder, duration of television review and Internet use, etc.), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Guilt Scale (GS) after the participants were informed about the study objective and they signed the informed consent form. RESULTS: A total of 385 participants, 84 of whom were women, with a mean age of 35.32±11.7 were included in the study. According to BAI and BDI, 14.5% of the participants had anxiety and 17.1% had depression symptoms. The regression analysis found that female gender, having sleep disorder, using Internet for 8 hours or more and having chronic illness were risk factors for anxiety; while female gender, being aged 18-30, having sleep disorder, having psychiatric illness, and using Internet for 8 hours or more were risk factors for depression. The state guilt did not show any significant correlation with any socio-demographic factor. CONCLUSION: Female gender, being young, having a history of psychiatric illness, having chronic illness, having sleep disorder, using Internet for 8 hours or more were found to be risk factors for more anxiety and depression symptoms. It is important to educate people about the methods of how to maintain healthy sleep during quarantine, to effectively fight against the excessive circulation of misinformation and to provide sufficient medical care to those with psychiatric and chronic diseases, being more vulnerable against infections.
