RESUMEN

Silver nanoclusters (Agn NCs) exhibit a remarkable optical property known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible to ultraviolet wavelengths. In this study, we address the size gap in LSPR responses between small NCs and nano-islands by synthesizing large Agn NCs with a countable number of atoms (n = 70-100) using a magnetron sputtering method, which were precisely size-selected and soft-landed onto substrates. The monodispersed Agn NCs were immobilized on a pre-decorated substrate with fullerene (C60) molecules, and their LSPR behaviors were characterized using two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy. Due to the distinct polarization selectivity of incident light associated with LSPR, the intensity ratio between p- and s-polarized lights (Ip/Is) in 2PPE spectroscopy serves as a reliable indicator of LSPR and its structural correlations. From n = 70 to 100, the Ip/Is value gradually decreases as the cluster size increases. This decrease is attributed to the enhancement of s-polarized light (Is), indicating that large Agn NCs on a C60 substrate undergo a deformation from spherical to flattened geometries, particularly above approximately n = 55.

RESUMEN

This retrospective observational study aimed to examine the relationships of maximum walking speed (MWS) with peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2) and anaerobic threshold (AT) obtained by cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) in patients with heart failure. The study participants were 104 consecutive men aged ≥ 20 years who had been hospitalized or had undergone outpatient care at our hospital for heart failure between February 2019 and January 2023. MWS was measured in a 5-m section with a 1-m run-up before and after the course. Multivariable analysis was used to examine the association between MWS and peak VO2 and AT by CPX. The Pearson correlation coefficient showed that MWS was positively correlated with percent-predicted peak VO2 and percent-predicted AT (r = 0.463, p < 0.001; and r = 0.485, p < 0.001, respectively). In the multiple linear regression analysis employing percent-predicted peak VO2 and percent-predicted AT as the objective variables, only MWS demonstrated a significant positive correlation (standardized ß: 0.471, p < 0.001 and 0.362, p < 0.001, respectively). Multiple logistic regression analyses, using an 80% cutoff in percent-predicted peak VO2 and AT, revealed that only MWS was identified as a significant factor in both cases (odds ratio [OR]: 1.239, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.071-1.432, p = 0.004 and OR: 1.469, 95% CI: 1.194-1.807, p < 0.001, respectively). MWS was correlated with peak VO2 and AT in male patients with heart failure. The MWS measurement as a screening test for exercise tolerance may provide a simple means of estimating peak VO2 and AT in heart failure patients.

RESUMEN

A highly conductive textile was woven from nano-fibers coated with the PEDOT-PSS polymer. The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of textile electrodes for ECG recording as a smart garment. Electrode textile pads and lead wires were sewn to the lining of sportswear and their tolerability to repeated washings were tested up to 150 times. The electrical conductivity of the textile electrode remained functional for up to 50 machine washes. To assess the level of motion artifacts or noise during the daily monitoring of ECG, a single lead ECG with conventional or textile electrodes was recorded during supine rest, seated rest, upright trunk rotation (i.e., twisting), and stepping movement in 66 healthy adults. A Holter system was used for data storage and analysis. ECG patterns of P, QRS, and T waves were comparable between the conventional and textile electrodes. However, the signal-to-artifact-and/or-noise ratio (SAR) during twisting was larger in the textile electrodes than in the conventional electrodes. No skin irritation was seen in the textile electrodes. The single lead textile electrodes embedded in an inner garment were usable for continuous and/or repeated ECG monitoring in daily life except during vigorous trunk movement.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To prevent a future shortage of cardiologists, it is important for female cardiologists to continue working. Gender differences in the professional and private lives of cardiologists, as well as the barriers to work for female cardiologists, were surveyed. METHODS AND RESULTS: In August 2007, a questionnaire was mailed to all 195 faculty members/fellows and 155 alumni of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Nippon Medical School. More female cardiologists were dissatisfied with their job than male cardiologists (34% vs 17%, P<0.005). Women reported greater career limitation by family responsibilities and housework. Men and women both reported that long working hours was the most problematic issue, but significantly more women reported this than men (76% vs 94%, P<0.05). Female cardiologists were more concerned about occupational radiation exposure (88% vs 59%, P<0.01) and wanted opportunities for retraining after childcare leave (100% vs 76%, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The following measures should be taken: (1)establishment of more family-friendly working conditions in hospitals, (2)provision of various work positions that allow more flexibility and predictability for women, (3)establishment of a retraining system, and (4)development of work and research opportunities that are attractive to women. The Japanese Circulation Society is expected to establish a retraining system at certified institutions.

RESUMEN

Infective endocarditis, a serious infection most commonly affecting rheumatic or prosthetic valves, generally occurs after bacteremia. Atopic dermatitis, a very common disease, carries a high prevalence of skin infections, particularly with Staphylococcus aureus. While cutaneous colonization by S. aureus represents an important source of bacteremia, few cases of infective endocarditis arising from the skin lesions of atopic dermatitis have been reported. We describe a patient with recurrent S. aureus prosthetic valve endocarditis developing in this manner.
