BACKGROUND: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is difficult to diagnose. We investigated whether a 3-gene host response signature in blood can distinguish TBM from other brain infections. METHODS: The expression of 3 genes (dual specificity phosphatase 3 [DUSP3], guanylate-binding protein [GBP5], krupple-like factor 2 [KLF2]) was analyzed by RNA sequencing of archived whole blood from 4 cohorts of Vietnamese adults: 281 with TBM, 279 with pulmonary tuberculosis, 50 with other brain infections, and 30 healthy controls. Tuberculosis scores (combined 3-gene expression) were calculated following published methodology and discriminatory performance compared using area under a receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC). RESULTS: GBP5 was upregulated in TBM compared to other brain infections (P < .001), with no difference in DUSP3 and KLF2 expression. The diagnostic performance of GBP5 alone (AUC, 0.74; 95% confidence interval [CI], .67-.81) was slightly better than the 3-gene tuberculosis score (AUC, 0.66; 95% CI, .58-.73) in TBM. Both GBP5 expression and tuberculosis score were higher in participants with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; P < .001), with good diagnostic performance of GBP5 alone (AUC, 0.86; 95% CI, .80-.93). CONCLUSIONS: The 3-gene host signature in whole blood has the ability to discriminate TBM from other brain infections, including in individuals with HIV. Validation in large prospective diagnostic study is now required.

BACKGROUND: Recycling of integrin via endosomal vesicles is critical for the migration of cancer cells, which leads to the metastasis of pancreatic cancer and devastating cancer-related death. So, new diagnostic and therapeutic molecules which target the recycling of endosomal vesicles need to be developed. METHODS: Public databases including TCGA, ICGC, GSE21501, GSE28735, and GENT are analyzed to derive diagnostic and therapeutic targets. To reveal biological roles and underlying mechanisms of molecular targets, various molecular biological experiments were conducted. RESULTS: First, we identified UNC13D's overexpression in patients with pancreatic cancer (n = 824) and its prognostic significance and high hazard ratio (HR) in four independent pancreatic cancer cohorts (TCGA, n = 178, p = 0.014, HR = 3.629; ICGC, n = 91, p = 0.000, HR = 4.362; GSE21501, n = 102, p = 0.002, HR = 2.339; GSE28735, n = 45, p = 0.022, HR = 2.681). Additionally, its expression is associated with the clinicopathological progression of pancreatic cancer. Further biological studies have shown that UNC13D regulates the migration of pancreatic cancer cells by coupling the exocytosis of recycling endosomes with focal adhesion turnover via the regulation of FAK phosphorylation. Immunoprecipitation and immunocytochemistry showed the formation of the RAB11-UNC13D-FAK axis in endosomes during integrin recycling. We observed that UNC13D directly interacted with the FERM domain of FAK and regulated FAK phosphorylation in a calcium-dependent manner. Finally, we found co-expression of UNC13D and FAK showed the poorest survival (TCGA, p = 0.000; ICGC, p = 0.036; GSE28735, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: We highlight that UNC13D, a novel prognostic factor, promotes pancreatic cancer progression by coupling integrin recycling with focal adhesion turnover via the RAB11-UNC13D-FAK axis for the migration of pancreatic cancer cells.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is characterized by an impaired epidermal barrier, which could be associated with sensitization to food allergens (FAs) and/or inhaled allergens and contribute to the severity of AD. However, no clinical guidance has been established for evaluations of food sensitization (FS) in AD patients. This study investigated how AD severity and epidermal barrier impairment are associated with FS and factors that can predict FS in children with AD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 children (12-60 months) diagnosed with AD. AD severity was determined using the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index. FS was evaluated by measuring serum-specific IgE antibodies against 31 FAs using an immunoblotting method. Epidermal barrier impairment was assessed by measuring transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) levels. RESULTS: 90% of participants were sensitized to at least one tested FA, with cow's milk, egg white, beef, almond, egg yolk, and peanut being the most common. Children with moderate-severe AD had lower SCH levels than those with mild AD. Children with AD who were sensitized to >10 FAs had significantly higher TEWL and lower SCH levels, compared with those sensitized to 1-4 FAs and 5-10 FAs. The SCORAD score and SCH level in lesional skin provided moderately predictive value for sensitization to FAs in children with AD. CONCLUSION: FS is common in children with AD and closely associate with AD severity as well as epidermal barrier impairment. Evaluations of FS should be considered for children with moderate to severe AD and/or low SCH levels.

A novel, rapid, and facile method for one-step sonoelectrochemical synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (UEZ) was introduced in this study. The optimum operating parameters have been selected at a voltage of 7.5 V, KCl concentration of 0.5 M, and the reaction time of 60 min. The as-prepared UEZ were characterized by XRD, SEM, and HRTEM. It was found that the UEZ has a hexagonal wurtzite structure with high crystalline quality, good purity, a size range of 30-100 nm, and good photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. This work provides a facile route for large-scale synthesizing ZnO nanoparticles via anodization.

OBJECTIVE: SEANUTS II Vietnam aims to obtain an in-depth understanding of the nutritional status and nutrient intake of children between 0.5-11.9 years old. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: A multistage cluster systematic random sampling method was implemented in different regions in Vietnam: North Mountainous, Central Highlands, Red River Delta, North Central and Coastal Area, Southeast and Mekong River Delta. PARTICIPANTS: 4001 children between 6 months and 11.9 years of age. RESULTS: Prevalence of stunting and underweight was higher in rural than in urban children, whereas overweight and obese rates were higher in urban areas. 12.0% of the children had anemia and especially children 0.5-1-year-old were affected (38.6%). Low serum retinol was found in 6.2% of children ≥ 4 years old. Prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency was 31.1% while 60.8% had low serum zinc. For nutrient intake, overall, 80.1% of the children did not meet the estimated energy requirements. For calcium intake, ∼60% of the younger children did not meet the RNI while it was 92.6% in children >7 years old. For vitamin D intake, 95.0% of the children did not meet RNI. CONCLUSIONS: SEANUTS II Vietnam indicated that overnutrition was more prevalent than undernutrition in urban areas, while undernutrition was found more in rural areas. The high prevalence of low serum zinc, vitamin D insufficiency and the inadequate intakes of calcium and vitamin D are of concern. Nutrition strategies for Vietnamese children should consider three sides of malnutrition and focus on approaches for the prevention malnutrition.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and practically test high-precision femtosecond laser ablation models for dental hard tissue that are useful for detailed planning of automated laser dental restorative treatment. METHODS: Analytical models are proposed, derived, and demonstrated for practical calculation of ablation rates, ablation efficiency and ablated morphology of human dental enamel and dentin using femtosecond lasers. The models assume an effective optical attenuation coefficient for the irradiated material. To achieve ablation, it is necessary for the local energy density of the attenuated pulse in the hard tissue to surpass a predefined threshold that signifies the minimum energy density required for material ionization. A 1029 nm, 40 W carbide 275 fs laser was used to ablate sliced adult human teeth and generate the data necessary for testing the models. The volume of material removed, and the shape of the ablated channel were measured using optical profilometry. RESULTS: The models fit with the measured ablation efficiency curve against laser fluence for both enamel and dentin, correctly capturing the fluence for optimum ablation and the volume of ablated material per pulse. The detailed shapes of a 400-micrometer wide channel and a single-pulse width channel are accurately predicted using the superposition of the analytical result for a single pulse. CONCLUSIONS: The findings have value for planning automated dental restorative treatment using femtosecond lasers. The measurements and analysis give estimates of the optical properties of enamel and dentin irradiated with an infrared femtosecond laser at above-threshold fluence and the proposed models give insight into the physics of femtosecond laser processing of dental hard tissue.

Background: MicroRNAs (miRs) are emerging targets for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of heart failure (HF). Accumulated evidence showed that microRNA-132 (miR-132) and microRNA-152 (miR-152) play critical roles in the development of multiple pathological processes of the heart. Although their upregulations have been detected in the failing hearts of humans and animal models, little is known about the circulating levels of miR-132 and miR-152 in patients with HF. Methods: Our study was conducted from January 2022 to August 2022 at the Cardiology Department of the University Medical Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. During study period, 36 participants were consecutively enrolled, including 18 HF patients and 18 patients who age and sex matched the non-HF controls. Serum samples of study participants were collected on admission and the expression levels of miR-132 and miR-152 were measured by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The comparative cycle threshold method (ΔCt) was applied to calculate the relative expression of miRs. Results: The miR concentration in HF group was significantly lower than that in the control group. In contrast, the serum levels of miR-132 and miR-152 were significantly higher in HF patients. Further analyses of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed that miR-132 and miR-152 individually had moderate diagnostic potential for HF (with area under curve [AUC] values of 0.713 and 0.698, respectively). A positive correlation between these miRs was also confirmed. Conclusion: Serum miR-132 and miR-152 were upregulated in Vietnamese patients with HF and may serve as candidate biomarkers for diagnostic purposes.

The search for chemical hit material is a lengthy and increasingly expensive drug discovery process. To improve it, ligand-based quantitative structure-activity relationship models have been broadly applied to optimize primary and secondary compound properties. Although these models can be deployed as early as the stage of molecule design, they have a limited applicability domain─if the structures of interest differ substantially from the chemical space on which the model was trained, a reliable prediction will not be possible. Image-informed ligand-based models partly solve this shortcoming by focusing on the phenotype of a cell caused by small molecules, rather than on their structure. While this enables chemical diversity expansion, it limits the application to compounds physically available and imaged. Here, we employ an active learning approach to capitalize on both of these methods' strengths and boost the model performance of a mitochondrial toxicity assay (Glu/Gal). Specifically, we used a phenotypic Cell Painting screen to build a chemistry-independent model and adopted the results as the main factor in selecting compounds for experimental testing. With the additional Glu/Gal annotation for selected compounds we were able to dramatically improve the chemistry-informed ligand-based model with respect to the increased recognition of compounds from a 10% broader chemical space.

The aim of this study is to analyse the changing patterns in the transmission of COVID-19 in relation to changes in Vietnamese governmental policies, based on epidemiological data and policy actions in a large Vietnamese province, Bac Ninh, in 2021. Data on confirmed cases from January to December 2021 were collected, together with policy documents. There were three distinct periods of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bac Ninh province during 2021. During the first period, referred to as the 'Zero-COVID' period (01/04-07/04/2021), there was a low population vaccination rate, with less than 25% of the population receiving its first vaccine dose. Measures implemented during this period focused on domestic movement restrictions, mask mandates, and screening efforts to control the spread of the virus. The subsequent period, referred to as the 'Transition' period (07/05-10/22/2021), witnessed a significant increase in population vaccination coverage, with 80% of the population receiving their first vaccine dose. During this period, several days passed without any reported COVID-19 cases in the community. The local government implemented measures to manage domestic actions and reduce the time spent in quarantine, and encouraged home quarantining for the close contacts of cases with COVID-19. Finally, the 'New-normal' stage (10/23-12/31/2021), during which the population vaccination coverage with a second vaccine dose increased to 70%, and most of the mandates for the prevention and control of COVID-19 were reduced. In conclusion, this study highlights the importance of governmental policies in managing and controlling the transmission of COVID-19 and provides insights for developing realistic and context-specific strategies in similar settings.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted cancer screening and treatment delivery, but COVID-19's impact on tobacco cessation treatment for cancer patients who smoke has not been widely explored. AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted a sequential cross-sectional analysis of data collected from 34 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers participating in NCI's Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I), across three reporting periods: one prior to COVID-19 (January-June 2019) and two during the pandemic (January-June 2020, January-June 2021). Using McNemar's Test of Homogeneity, we assessed changes in services offered and implementation activities over time. RESULTS: The proportion of centers offering remote treatment services increased each year for Quitline referrals (56%, 68%, and 91%; p = .000), telephone counseling (59%, 79%, and 94%; p = .002), and referrals to Smokefree TXT (27%, 47%, and 56%; p = .006). Centers offering video-based counseling increased from 2020 to 2021 (18% to 59%; p = .006), Fewer than 10% of centers reported laying off tobacco treatment staff. Compared to early 2020, in 2021 C3I centers reported improvements in their ability to maintain staff and clinician morale, refer to external treatment services, train providers to deliver tobacco treatment, and modify clinical workflows. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a rapid transition to new telehealth program delivery of tobacco treatment for patients with cancer. C3I cancer centers adjusted rapidly to challenges presented by the pandemic, with improvements reported in staff morale and ability to train providers, refer patients to tobacco treatment, and modify clinical workflows. These factors enabled C3I centers to sustain evidence-based tobacco treatment implementation during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPLICATIONS: This work describes how NCI-designated cancer centers participating in the Cancer Center Cessation Initiative (C3I) adapted to challenges to sustain evidence-based tobacco use treatment programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. This work offers a model for resilience and rapid transition to remote tobacco treatment services delivery and proposes a policy and research agenda for telehealth services as an approach to sustaining evidence-based tobacco treatment programs.

IL(interleukin)-6 is a multifunctional cytokine crucial for immunological, hematopoiesis, inflammation, and bone metabolism. Strikingly, IL-6 has been shown to significantly contribute to the initiation of cytokine storm-an acute systemic inflammatory syndrome in Covid-19 patients. Recent study has showed that blocking the IL-6 signaling pathway with an anti-IL-6 receptor monoclonal antibody (mAb) can reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and enhance patient survival. However, the mAb has several drawbacks, such as high cost, potential immunogenicity, and invasive administration due to the large-molecule protein product. Instead, these issues could be mitigated using small molecule IL-6 inhibitors, but none are currently available. This study aimed to discover IL-6 inhibitors based on the PPI with a novel camelid Fab fragment, namely 68F2, in a crystal protein complex structure (PDB ID: 4ZS7). The pharmacophore models and molecular docking were used to screen compounds from DrugBank databases. The oral bioavailability of the top 24 ligands from the screening was predicted by the SwissAMDE tool. Subsequently, the selected molecules from docking and MD simulation illustrated a promising binding affinity in the formation of stable complexes at the active binding pocket of IL-6. Binding energies using the MM-PBSA technique were applied to the top 4 hit compounds. The result indicated that DB08402 and DB12903 could form strong interactions and build stable protein-ligand complexes with IL-6. These potential compounds may serve as a basis for further developing small molecule IL-6 inhibitors in the future.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dialysis on change of QT interval in pre-dialysis, 1 h after dialysis initiation, and post-dialysis period in patients on maintenance dialysis (MHD). METHODS: An observational prospective study was conducted, including 61 patients, on thrice-weekly MHD ≥3 months, and without acute diseases, at the Nephrology-Dialysis Department of a tertiary hospital in Vietnam. The exclusive criteria were atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, branch block, prolonged QT recorded in medical history, and taking antiarrhythmic drugs lengthening QT interval before entering the study. Twelve-lead electrocardiographs and blood chemistries were done simultaneously before, 1 h after initiation, and after the dialysis session. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with prolonged QT interval increased significantly from 44.3% in pre-dialysis to 77% 1 h after dialysis initiation and 86.9% in post-dialysis session. Immediately after dialysis, the QT and QTc intervals on all 12 leads were significantly longer. Post-dialysis levels of potassium, chloride, magnesium, and urea decreased significantly from 3.97 (0.7), 98.6 (4.7), 1.04 (0.2), and 21.4 (6.1) to 2.78 (0.4), 96.6 (2.5), 0.87 (0.2), and 6.33 (2.8) mmol/L, respectively, whereas the calcium increased significantly from 2.19 (0.2) to 2.57 (0.2) mmol/L. There were significant differences in the potassium level at the dialysis initiation and its speed of reduction between the group without and with prolonged QT interval. CONCLUSIONS: There was an increased risk of prolonged QT interval in MHD patients regardless of the absence of the previous abnormal QT interval. Notably, this risk increased rapidly 1 h after the initiation of dialysis.

BACKGROUND: A combination of enzymes and ultrasound treatment was employed to extract bioactive compounds from cashew nut testa, a by-product of the food industry. The total catechin, flavonoid, and phenolic content of extracts was investigated together with their biological activity. RESULTS: Enzyme and ultrasound-assisted extraction (E-UAE) was performed by incubation with Viscozyme L (20 mL kg-1 of testa powder, v/w) for 60 min before sonication for 40 min. Ultrasound and enzyme-assisted extraction (U-EAE) was carried out using sonication for 40 min before incubation with Viscozyme L (20 mL kg-1 of testa powder) for 60 min. Under appropriate conditions, the total phenolic, flavonoid, catechin, and epigallocatechin gallate content of the extracts from cashew nut testa obtained from a combination method (U-EAE or E-UAE) was significantly higher than that obtained using a single method (EAE or UAE). Extracts of cashew nut testa obtained from E-UAE displayed significantly higher antioxidant and α-amylase inhibitory activity than those from the U-EAE. The E-UAE extract at a concentration of 100 µg mL-1 had a greater impact on the cell viability of MCF-7 after treatment (22% cell viability) than did the doxorubicin (DOX) at 4 µg mL-1 (39% cell viability), and the E-UAE extract at 100 µg mL-1 was considered to be safe for healthy cells because the viability of the bovine aerotic endothelial cells treated with this extract was 91%, which was similar to the DOX treatment. CONCLUSION: The extract of cashew nut testa obtained from E-UAE is valuable and promising for the development of anti-inflammatory therapeutic drugs. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Problem: Like most low- and middle-income countries, Viet Nam has a scarcity of rehabilitation professionals and lacks training programmes that meet international standards. Approach: In 2018, four Vietnamese medical universities, the Université Catholique de Louvain, the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the Humanity & Inclusion charity and World Physiotherapy agreed to collaborate on strengthening pre-service education for physiotherapists in the country. Local setting: Viet Nam has a favourable environment for nurturing rehabilitation services and education: development funds have been available; government investment is increasing; and rehabilitation education has existed for many decades. Relevant changes: The collaboration resulted in the establishment of: (i) a 4-year, competency-based, entry-level curriculum for physiotherapists (bachelor's degree); (ii) opportunities for continuing professional development; (iii) a 2-year master's programme for physiotherapy lecturers and clinical supervisors; and (iv) a national physiotherapy association. In addition, four students were supported in studying for PhD degrees. Strong collaboration and comprehensive and complementary interventions have laid the foundations for sustainable, high-quality, educational programmes for physiotherapists, which will improve access to, and the standard of, rehabilitation services in Viet Nam, thereby leading to better patient outcomes. Lessons learnt: Curricula for entry-level physiotherapy programmes should be competency-based, be actively managed by national educators and meet international standards while being responsive to local priorities. To strengthen the rehabilitation workforce, educators involved in teaching and supervising training programmes should have the skills and knowledge required. A national professional physiotherapy association should be established to provide continuing professional development for physiotherapists and to take part in international collaborations.

BACKGROUND: Malaria elimination by 2030 is an aim of many countries in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, including Vietnam. However, to achieve this goal and accelerate towards malaria elimination, countries need to determine the extent and prevalence of asymptomatic malaria as a potential reservoir for malaria transmission and the intensity of malaria transmission. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of asymptomatic malaria and seropositivity rate in several districts of Gia Lai province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of asymptomatic malaria and serological testing was conducted in 3283 people living at 14 communes across seven districts in Gia Lai province in December 2016 to January 2017. Finger prick capillary blood samples were tested for malaria using rapid diagnostic testing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), as well as detecting antibodies against 3 Plasmodium falciparum and 4 Plasmodium vivax antigens by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Age-seroprevalence curves were fitted using reverse catalytic models with maximum likelihood. RESULTS: The study population was predominantly male (65.9%, 2165/3283), adults (88.7%, 2911/3283) and of a minority ethnicity (72.2%, 2371/3283), with most participants being farmers and outdoor government workers (90.2%, 2960/3283). Using a small volume of blood (≈ 10 µL) the PCR assay revealed that 1.74% (57/3283) of the participants had asymptomatic malaria (P. falciparum 1.07%, P. vivax 0.40%, Plasmodium malariae 0.15% and mixed infections 0.12%). In contrast, the annual malaria prevalence rates for clinical malaria in the communities where the participants lived were 0.12% (108/90,395) in 2016 and 0.22% (201/93,184) in 2017. Seropositivity for at least one P. falciparum or one P. vivax antigen was 38.5% (1257/3262) and 31.1% (1022/3282), respectively. Age-dependent trends in the proportion of seropositive individuals in five of the districts discriminated the three districts with sustained low malaria prevalence from the two districts with higher transmission. CONCLUSIONS: Asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers were found to be substantially more prevalent than clinical cases in seven districts of Gia Lai province, and a third of the population had serological evidence of previous malaria exposure. The findings add knowledge on the extent of asymptomatic malaria and transmission for developing malaria elimination strategies for Vietnam.

Antibiotic resistance has been becoming more and more critical due to bacteria's evolving hydrolysis enzymes. The NDM-1 enzyme could hydrolyze not only carbapenems but also most of ß-lactam's antibiotics and inhibitors. In fact, variant strains could impose a high impact on the resistance of bacteria producing NDM-1. Although previous studies showed the effect of some variants toward antibiotics and inhibitors binding, there has been no research systematically evaluating the effects of alternative one-point mutations on the hydrolysis capacity of NDM-1. This study aims to identify which mutants could increase or decrease the effectiveness of antibiotics and ß-lactamase inhibitors toward bacteria. Firstly, 35 different variants with a high probability of emergence based on the PAM-1 matrix were constructed and then docked with 5 ligands, namely d-captopril, l-captopril, thiorphan, imipenem, and meropenem. The selected complexes underwent molecular dynamics simulation and free energy binding estimation, with the results showing that the substitutions at residues 122 and 124 most influenced the binding ability of NDM-1 toward inhibitors and antibiotics. The H122R mutant decreases the binding ability between d-captopril and NDM-1 and diminishes the effectiveness of this antibiotic toward Enterobacteriaceae. However, the H122R mutant has a contrary impact on thiorphan, which should be tested in vitro and in vivo in further experiments.

Ca Mau and Kien Giang, the two provinces of the Mekong Delta bordering the Gulf of Thailand, are facing major environmental challenges affecting the agriculture and aquaculture sectors upon which many livelihoods in this region depend on. This study maps the suitability of these two provinces for paddy rice cultivation and shrimp farming according to soil characteristics and current and future environmental conditions for variables found to significantly influence the yield of those two sectors, i.e., the level of saltwater intrusion, water availability for rainfed agriculture, and the length of the growing period. Future environmental conditions were simulated using the MIKE 11 hydrodynamic model forced by four hydrodynamic scenarios, each one representing different extents of saltwater intrusion during both the dry and rainy seasons, while also considering the availability of water resources for rainfed agriculture. The suitability zoning was performed using a GIS-based analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach, resulting in the categorisation of the land according to four suitability levels for each sector. The analysis reveals that paddy rice cultivation will become more suitable to Kien Giang province while shrimp farming will be more suitable to Ca Mau province if the simulated future environmental conditions materialise. A suitability analysis is essential for optimal utilisation of the land. The approach presented in this study will inform the regional economic development master plan and provide guidance to other delta regions experiencing severe environmental changes and wishing to consider potential future climatic and sea level changes, and their associated impacts, in their land use planning.

Magnesium batteries, like lithium-ion batteries, with higher abundance and similar efficiency, have drawn great interest for large-scale applications such as electric vehicles, grid energy storage and many more. On the other hand, the use of organic electrode materials allows high energy-performance, metal-free, environmentally friendly, versatile, lightweight, and economically efficient magnesium storage devices. In particular, the structural diversity and the simple activity of organic molecules make redox properties, and hence battery efficiency, easy to monitor. While organic magnesium batteries still in their infancy, this field becomes more and more promising because significant results were reported. To summarize the achievements in studies on organic cathodes for magnesium systems, their synthesis is discussed, combined with electrode design to provide the basis for controlling the electrochemical properties. Moreover, the techniques to synthesize organic materials with high-yield are mentioned. Finally, potential problems and prospects are explored to further improve organic cathodes.

Among all neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most prevalent worldwide, with a huge burden to the society and no efficient AD treatment so far. Continued efforts have been being made towards early and powerful diagnosis of AD, in the hope for a successful set of clinical trials and subsequently AD curative treatment. Towards this aim, detection and quantification of amyloid beta (Aß) peptides in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and other biofluids, which are established and validated biomarkers for AD, have drawn attention of the scientific community and industry over almost two decades. In this work, an overview on our major contributions over 15 years to develop different electrokinetic and microfluidic strategies for Aß peptides detection and quantification is reported. Accordingly, discussions and viewpoints on instrumental and methodological developments for microscale electrophoresis, microfluidic designs and immuno-enrichment / assays on magnetic beads in microchannels for tracing Aß peptides in CSF are given in this review.

In this study, we report a facile and effective approach for large-scale production of nitrogen-doped TiO2nanocrystals (UNTs) by a combination of ultrasonic irradiation and electrochemistry at room temperature using NH4NO3electrolyte as the nitrogen source. The as-prepared UNTs were then characterized by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results indicated that the nitrogen content of UNTs reached 9.3% and bandgap energy of 2.62 eV, thus gave the high photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. The mechanism for the formation of UNTs by ultrasonic-assisted electrochemical approach was also proposed.
