RESUMEN
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is known to occur in conjunction with other autoimmune disorders including rheumatoid arthritis. We describe herein a patient with long before-onset seronegative rheumatoid arthritis who developed Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism without serologic evidence of thyroglobulin, microsomal and/or anti-TSH receptor antibodies. The occurrence of these autoimmune diseases in individual patients suggests an imbalance in immune function which effects more than one organ system. The predisposition to this spectrum of autoimmune diseases may be genetically determined, with specific HLA haplotypes associated with a variety of autoimmune diseases. The case of this patient provides the demonstration that intrathyroidal lymphocytes in autoimmune thyroid disorders and T-lymphocytes in the synovium are responsible for mediating the glandular destruction in Hashimoto disease and intraarticular lesions in rheumatoid arthritis, since the disorders can exist without evidence of a systemic immune response.

A case of dyslipoproteinaemia of type V in a woman suffering from primary hypothyroidism, florid diabetes mellitus and obesity is reported. The case is commented on in general and as regards possible correlations between the diseases and the dyslipoproteinaemic picture. The various therapeutic treatment employed and results are also reported.

Statistical assessment of laboratory data relating to about 700 cases of lymphopathy of various kinds was used in the elaboration of material to be used in diagnosis in the very early stages of the disease. Diagnostic tables giving a high degree of probability were prepared.

A breakdown of the statistical data for 700 cases of lymphopathy was undertaken to how far each disease picture could be considered as a seperate entity or as part of a sub-class. It was found that two possibilities exist: a) there is a typical sub-class for this nosological category; b) two sub-classes can be formed, one of which covers paranormal situations, while the other includes cases presenting pathological parameter values. In either event, there remains a considerable fringe of atypical cases that cannot be included in any sub-class.

Only seven hundred cases of chordoma approximatively are reported in medical literature from 1850 to date. We now describe two cases recently observed at our Medical Division, one of sacro-coccigeal chordoma and the other developed from clivus of Blumenbach. Their peculiarities are briefly discussed and compared with a rapid revision of the literature on this argument. The results of antiblastic therapy are presented and its opportunity in addition to Roentgenologic and surgical therapy is discussed.

-- A benign form of Albers Schonberg disease (osteopetrosis) is described. The clinical and pathogenetical aspects are discussed and the findings compared with the literature. The diagnosis was made on the basis of radiological findings and histological results of bone biopsy.

The association of lithium carbonate and antiblastic drugs has been studied in 22 patients suffering from tumours to see whether it was able to prevent or attenuate the neutropenising effect and establish whether its protection action on leucocytaemia was not just transitory but was maintained for prolonged treatment also. Patients were submitted to four oncolytic treatment cycles during which administration with LiCO3 was associated with the first and third cycles (LNLN sequence) in 14 patients and with the second and fourth (NLNL sequence) in the other 8. Statistical analysis of the results obtained confirmed that lithium carbonate performs a protective action with respect to antiblastic-induced neutropenia and that the action is long term. The drop in monocytes also seems to diminish after administration of lithium carbonate.
